In the past 33 years, only 15 women had ever been ranked number one in the world in tennis, Hall of fame names like Steffi Graf, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova and Monica Seles. But on Thursday, Ana Ivanovic guaranteed herself membership in that select club by advancing to the French Open final for the second year running. She replaces Maria Sharapova atop the rankings.

Since 1975, when computer rankings were first established, players who have had the longest runs at the top of five years or more are Graf, Navratilova and Evert while Seles, Martina Hingis and Lindsay Davenport each spent 2-3 years as number one. Both Venus Williams and Serena Williams along with the recently-retired Justine Henin were top-ranked for at least a year or more with shorter runs at the top for Jennifer Capriati, Maria Sharapova, Amelie Mauresmo, Kim Clisters, Tracy Austin, Aranxta Sanchez Vicario and Evonne Goolagong.
