Free screening of Harvey Milk documentary tonight...
With the Gus Van Sant-directed "Milk" opening next month, it's a perfect time to revisit the Oscar-winning documentary "The Life and Times of Harvey Milk."
Tonight, the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center's Young Professionals Council presents a special free screening of the documentary at the Center's Renberg Theatre at 8 p.m.
The screening serves as a prelude to the Center's 37th Anniversary Gala and Auction, at which Van Sant will receive the Center's Board of Directors Award. Van Sant's new biographical film about the San Francisco gay rights pioneer, "Milk," will open in limited release on November 26.
"The Times of Harvey Milk" provides historical footage and personal reminiscences about this remarkable man. Directed by Rob Epstein, the film documents the rise of Harvey Milk from neighborhood activist to the first openly gay member of the city's Board of Supervisors, becoming in the process a symbol of gay political achievement. Culminating in the still shocking assassination of Milk and Mayor George Moscone at San Francisco's City Hall,
