Pro-Prop. 8 is leading in fundraising and in the polls...

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,prop8.jpgThis is discouraging news to say the least:

A just-released research poll conducted by Lake Research Partners shows the yes side on anti-gay marriage Prop. 8 initiative leading by four percentage points. Currently, 47% of voters support the banning of gay marriage in California, while 43% would vote against a ban, the poll says.

It seems pretty clear why the proposition is gaining support: the no side is being completely out-funded and the TV commercial, which seems to be running on a loop, has been quite effective. It features San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom telling a crowd that same-sex marriage is here same-sex marriage was allowed by the state supreme court, that gay marriages are coming "whether you like it or not."

The fundraising looks like this: ProtectMarriage.com has taken in $25.4 million through September 30 this year and the main No on 8 committee reported $15.8 million in donations.

Geoff Kors, the executive director of Equality California and a member of the No on 8 executive committee, told a conference call full of LGBT reporters Tuesday: "We are going to lose this...if we don't raise the money we need to compete on the airwaves."

I know this has been said before, but I think it needs to be repeated- where are the gays with money on this? There are supposedly a lot of gay men and lesbians who are in possession of a lot of capital. Where are they? That there is any monetary difference at all tells me they don't care. It's really that simple. Nothing speaks louder than money. Nothing. Their silence with their money is deafening. I have a hard time believing that they care when we are being outspent by 10 million dollars on this. I know a lot of people must worry about their careers, and therefore can't call people out. I know I am worried for the same reasons. But this is sad. It reminds me too much of the excuses that we as a community (or lack there of) for those who don't come out although everyone knows they are gay. There is an inherit selfishness to it that I don't think we should accept. In many ways, we are a reflection of our greater society that acts the same way, and, then, we wonder why things remain the same.

One thought on being outspent. Maybe there are lot more Evangelical Christians than there are gay people?
