"Tru Loved" in selected theaters starting this weekend...

This wonderful film about being gay in high school and being a straight ally is one of my favorite of the year and I highly recommend you look after the jump to see if it is playing at a theater near you in the coming weeks.

"Tru Loved" was written and directed by Stewart Wade and tells the story of Tru, a sixteen year old uprooted by her lesbian moms from her gay-friendly home in San Francisco and moved to a conservative community in Southern California. Tru's only friend is a closeted football player, and that friendship is jeopardized when she starts the school's first Gay-Straight Alliance.

It bowed in NYC and Chicago yesterday and rolls out in other major cities over the next two weekends. You'll see familiar faces including Jane Lynch, Alec Mapa, Jasmine Guy, Bruce Wilanch, Nichelle Nichols, Alexandra Paul and a very funny Marcia Wallace. But the real treat here is the young cast who play the students especially the title character played by a gifted young actress: Najarra Townsend. She holds the movie together with her character's strong spirit and she is the one who makes you want to be brave and to really care.
