Gay Olympic Gold Medalist Matthew Mitcham finally lands a sponsorship...
I'm really happy that Olympic Gold Medalist Matthew Mitcham has landed hmself a major commercial endorsement with Telstra, Australia's largest telecommunications company.
But the fact that it comes SIX MONTHS after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games is what is so infuriating. It's just a reminder of the homophobia in our society and is a cold slap in the face. That he was the only openly gay athlete competing in the Olympic Games is significant enough because it shows such courage. Then to compete at such a high level and achieve an improbable victory is all the more amazing.
Amanda Johnston-Pell, executive director of brands and marketing communications for the company, said in a statement: "Matthew's performance at the Olympics last year was sensational, and he demonstrated all the characteristics that we look for in our ambassadors -- confidence, passion, and excellence in his sport. Matthew is a positive role model for all Australians, and we look forward to working with him as his diving career progresses."

What awesome news!
I haven't known how to take the lack of sponsorships. On the one hand, it's not like every Olympian - even those who win medals - become rich off sponsorships and endorsements. Far from it.
On the other hand, Mitcham's story involves so many stirring elements - only recently returned to the sport after a break, genuine sportsmanlike attitude, gold medal comeback after an initially dismal performance, first Australian diver to win gold in something like 84 years - that it's been shocking he hasn't received even a minor sponsorship.
So this is great news, and hopefully the first of many for the young man.
