Whoopi will be hosting the Tonys...

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,whoopi.jpgWhoopi Goldberg, so perfect as the moderator on "The View," seems to have done it all in showbiz. She's an Oscar winner ("Ghost"), she's headlined big box office hits ("Sister Act") and a classic ("The Color Purple"), headlined on Broadway ("Ma Rainey's Black Bottom") had her own talk show, sitcom and radio show, and hosted everything from the Academy Awards to the Grammys to Comic Relief.

But she has never hosted the Tony Awards. Until now.

Whoopi will emcee the 2008 telecast of Broadway's big night, after two years in which the award ceremony had no single host. In 2005 Hugh Jackman served as host for the third year in a row. A large group of presenters and performers served as collective hosts in 2006 and 2007. Other multiple-year hosts have included Rosie O'Donnell who did three years in a row in the 90s and Angela Lansbury.

CBS will broadcast the Tonys live from Radio City Music Hall on June 15. Nominations will be announced Tuesday.

Van Hansis gets Emmy nomination for "As the World Turns"

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,nuke2.jpg
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,hansis.jpgI'm watching "The View" (Elisabeth Hasselbeck is beyond irritating today but Whoopi controls her better than Rosie could) and they are announcing the Daytime Emmy nominations. Van Hansis walked out to announce the outstanding young actress contenders and when he was finished, it was announced that he had been nominated for outstanding young male actor. I have raved about his skillful performance as gay teen Luke . He makes us believe in Luke and care about him no matter how outrageous the storylines and no matter how many months pass without him kissing his boyfriend.

Also nominated in the talk show categories: Ellen DeGeneres nominated as host and her show got a nod as did "The View" and its five co-hosts - even Hasselbeck.

One last Oscar post...

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ddlkiss.jpg
The week began on such a high with all the Oscar hoopla and ended quite emotionally with layoffs in my newsrooms and having to abruptly say goodbye to 22 people. So, I want to make my final post of the day a collection of happy memories from the Academy Awards. Here are most of the other Oscar-related posts from this week in case ya missed some of them:

Academy Awards: Greg's red carpet snapshots...

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,greg.jpg
I gotta say, this was the most fun that I've ever had at the Academy Awards. It was just one of those years that was filled with good vibes. good interviews and a lot of excitement. It's days like this that make me so grateful for what I do and to be able to have the opportunities to have a front row seat to some of these big Hollywood events. I am so not over it! I wanted to share with you some of the snapshots I took while on the red carpet. Some aren't the best because I was juggling a tape recorder, cell phone and camera kinda all at once.

Gay Emmy moments...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagayemmy.jpgOK, the Emmys are probably never gonna be as gay at the Tonys where all kinds of gay men and women have been known to thank their spouses on stage and have often given them a nice kiss on the lips. But last night's Emmy Awards had more gay to them than usual starting with the presence of out Emmy nominees T.R. Knight (seen here helping hunky co-star Eric Dane with his tie) and Neil Patrick Harris who walked the red carpet with his cute boyfriend, actor David Burtka.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaemmygay.jpgWhat a difference a year makes for these two. Each lost in the supporting actor category (Knight for drama, Harris for comedy) but both are winners to me! They have shown that not only can out gay men convincingly play straight characters on television, they can get nominated for an Emmy for it!
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaellen.jpgAnd then there was the front-row presence of nominee and presenter Ellen DeGeneres who cuddled with her beautiful girlfriend Portia de Rossi for all the world to see. They got a lot of camera time on the FOX telecast despite Ellen's loss in the variety performance category to Tony Bennett.

God bless Tina Fey. In her very funny acceptance speech for outstanding comedy winner "30 Rock," she thanked the families of people who work on the show by expressing gratitude to the "parents, children, spouses and gay partners" of all of them.
This came after a clip of the show included this line from the "SNL" alum: "...just because I think that gay guys should be allowed to adopt kids ... doesn't mean I don't love America".

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarob.jpg
Other gay moments: Oscar-nominated "Chicago" director Rob Marshall (pictured, right) won another Emmy, this time for directing the NBC special "Tony Bennett: American Legend."

*********

The Office's "Gay Witch Hunt" episode won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Writer Greg Daniels won the trophy and gave a nursery-rhyme-like speech: "I'm not the little red hen that baked the bread by themselves. I asked, 'Who will wrtie this script with me?' And the duck, the pig and the cat - that would be Mike Schur, Jen Celotta and Paul Lieberstein, all said, "We will."

*********

Ryan Seacrest. So many. I guess the most prominent one would have been when the comedically-challenged Emmy host walked out during the middle of the show wearing a costume from "The Tudors" and said: "You know, this looked a lot less gay on the rack."
Then he says he wants to keep it.

Emmy Awards: Mingling at my first Governor's Ball...[Updated]

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagovernors.jpg
Got into my very first post-Emmy Governor's Ball tonight. It was easy to get to: you just walk down the hall from the press tent and into the ball. But I had to go back to the parking structure at USC first to drop off my laptop so I wouldn't look like a nerd blogger at this fancy party.
So, got there and ordered a diet coke then began to circle the room, looking for stars like Lucy Ricardo in an episode of "I Love Lucy." I quickly realize that there are many more non-stars here than stars. So this is gonna take some work. It's not easy to circle the room when teams of food servers keep marching out of the kitchen with scarily focused precision. In other words, get in their path at your own peril.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacross.jpg
OK! My first sightings. Sitting at a table in the middle of the room are Marcia Cross and her hubby and across from them are Patricia Heaton and Kelsey Grammer. Alright, I'm cookin now. There goes Conchata Ferrell, making her way to the ladies room. I sure wish she had won for "Two and a Half Men." I was rooting for her.
Meanwhile, Brad Garrett is sitting with a table of folks I don't recognize and is eating his dinner. I don't know what they served since I was just a mingler, not an official guest. I know it was meat (filet mignon?) and a potato and it all looked really fancy - Food Network fancy.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaemmysbetty.jpg
OK, jackpot. This is the "Ugly Betty" table, or tables, and I see Eric Mabius kissing someone's Emmy. America Ferrera is nowhere to be seen so I assume Mabius is smooching the Emmy won by Richard Shepard for directing the "Betty" pilot. Also spot Michael Urie and the kid who plays Justin whose real name escapes me at this late hour. And Ana Ortiz is there too, looking lovely.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabennett.jpg
Tony Bennett has just been introduced and he's gonna sing! i make my way to the center of the room. This, I gotta see...and hear. He does three numbers including "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" and is in incredible form. Is he 81 now? Amazing."
Back to star sightings: I see Thomas Haden Church arrive, Emmy in hand and he is standing with the gang from "Broken Trail" including fellow winner Robert Duvall. Then this was cool: I'm plotting my next move when I tiurn around and essentially am face-to-face with Al Gore, the former vice president of the U.S. and an Emmy winner tonight. I say, "Congratulations Mr. Gore." He smiles, says "Thank you" and we shake hands. I'm kinda giddy for a few seconds then spot LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa who is just being surrounded by all these people - mostly women. He seemed to be trying to make his way out of the room was constantly being stopped, asked to pose for pictures etc.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaemmy.jpg
I decide to make one last circle around the party before heading out. i spot Glenn Close standing at a table talking to people, including Edward Asner. At another table, I see Ben Vereen talking to his "Roots" co-star Leslie Uggams.
I didn't see Sally Field at the ball but on my way in, I did see her walking out of a press tent with her son and before I knew it, I said to her: "Great speech!" She paused for a moment, looked over her shoulder and said: "Thank you!" Then she walked into the night...

Emmy Awards: My favorite red carpet couples...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagayemmys.jpg

Emmy Awards: best of Greg's live blog...

I live-blogged last night from backstage at the Emmys...the winners were coming backstage to be interviewed and I also had a headset on so I could watch the show and comment on whatever was most interesting at that moment.
Here is just a sample of some of my observations...

Am I watching "American Idol" right now?
Nope, it's the Emmys and Ryan Seacrest is up there naming all the past hosts like Carson, Conan, Ellen etc. "Sure, they were hilarious, if that's what you're into. But would any of them shown up four hours early to host the Emmy pre-show."
Now he's mingling with the crowd, and says to Teri Hatcher, who he allegedly dated for about five minutes: "Hello Teri..." She looks mortified. I would too if I had dated Ryan Seacrest!
(Ouch! Was that my out loud voice?)

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaemmybennett.jpgChristina is the anti-Britney in duet with Tony Bennett...
There have been all kinds of rumors for days that Britney Spears was going to appear on the Emmy telecast to apologize for her horrendous performance at the VMAs a week ago. I doubt it will happen because, well, it's a stupid idea!
Meanwhile, we see the way things could have gone for Spears in the performance tonight of her former "Mickey Mouse Club" cast member Christina Aguilera who was lovely and in wonderful voice in a duet of "Steppin' Out (With My Baby)" with the amazing Tony Bennett.
It's called being a professional.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagore.jpgAl Gore wins an Emmy!
He couldn't win the presidency (at least the electoral votes) but Al Gore is on a winning streak this year. The documentary he starred in, "an Inconvenient Truth," won the Oscar this year and now his TV venture, Current: An Interaction Television Network, just won an Emmy!
"We're trying to open up the television medium," Gore said.
As he left the stage, he shouted: "More to come! Current.com next month!"
The man has learned how to get his message across...

Al Gore is backstage while Sally Field wins onstage...
BREAKING NEWS: Al Gore just told us that he isn't running for president and congratulated the Academy for going green this year.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasally.jpgOK, back to the show: Sally Field has just won the Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a drama series for "Brothers & Sisters." She plays Nora Walker on the ABC show, the mother of five adult children, including a son sent to serve in Iraq. Field was giving a terrific speech about motherswhen that damned orchestra ruined her flow. But she collected herself to finish strong: "Let's face it, if mothers ruled the world, there wouldn't be any goddamed wars in the first place!"
This is Field's third Emmy. Backstage, the actress is told by a reporter that her anti-war comment at the end of her acceptance speech would get a lot of attention.
"Oh well," was her reply. "I've been there before....I don't care."
Then a reporter wanted to know what she thought of FOX bleeping out the "goddamed wars" part of her remarks. [on the West Coast, the completely cut away from Field, even the video. It was so chicken - total censorship]
Field: "Oh well. If they bleep it, I'll say it somewhere else."
The actress added: "I said what I wanted to say. I wanted to pay homage to the mothers of the world and let their work be seen and valued. i seriously think if mothers ruled the world, we wouldnt be sending out children off to be slaughtered."
Of being on "Brothers & Sisters" as Nora Walker, she said: "I'm very fortunate and grateful to have Nora Walker in my life, all the Walkers. I wanted to say something about the mothers who wait for the military children to come home. That's the heart iof Nora Walker's character this year. I don't see this kind of character examined: what is it like to be a woman in her 60s? It certainly is a blessing and a great opptortunity for me to explore myself as an actor at his time in my life."

Memorable lines from Elaine Stritch and Brad Garrett...
I love Elaine Stritch, showbiz legend. She won the Emmy last weekend for her guest role on "30 Rock" and presented with Stanley Tucci. But as she struggled with the teleprompter she confessed: "I'm not faking this. I really don't know what the hell I'm doing!"
Brought the house down.
As for Brad Garrett, his humor was more controversial.
He complimented co-presenter and "Til Death" co-star Joley Fisher on her revealing dress then said, as he towered over his much-shorter partner: "You should see it from up here! Note to self: 'Buy milk.' I think you just made Charlie Sheen's 'to do' list."
The camera panned to Sheen. He was not laughing.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaroots.jpgBackstage with the cast of "Roots"
They came back here and I had to know, what did they think of this year's crop of nominees in the miniseries category?
Ben Vereen turned the question around and said to me: "What do YOU think?"
I didn't say. Thankfully, they had taken the mic away from me by then.
They paid tribute to Alex Haley who wrote "Roots" based on his own family history.
This is what I found sad: while Mischa Barton works in film after film, the great Cicely Tyson told us: "I'm looking for a job! I feel like Bette Davis who put an ad in the newspaper...do you remember that? I'm presently unemployed - for most of my career I've been unemployed."
She laughed when she said that. But this great actress, an Emmy winner and former Oscar nominee, still looks great and has that incredible voice.
Somebody hire this woman!

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahelen-mirren-emmys-2007-56.jpgHelen Mirren has just left the press room with her second Emmy in two years - this time for "Prime Suspect." She also won the Oscar this year and she'll take it all: "Other years, I've sat out there and not won so I'm very familiar with that feeling as well." Miiren was asked if she has m et Queen Elizabeth yet, who she played in "The Queen" and won the Oscar for. the answer is no. The Queen had invited Mirren to the White House State Dinner this year but the actress was busy filming the sequel to "National Treasure." "It's embarrassing. I felt mortified and very, very bad about it but there was nothing I could do."

Meanwhile, Robert Duvall is sitting about five feet from me right now - waiting to face the press - and has placed his two Emmys on the ground. I feel like crawling over there, picking one up and sprinting to the men's room and making a pretend speech. C'mon, you know you all have wanted to do that.

Join me backstage at The Emmys...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaemmy.jpg
I'm not exactly inside the Shrine Auditorium right now, I'm in this giant tent adjacent to it. A giant tent without tip-top air conditioning so I''m schvitzing here in my tuxedo. So hey, I'm starting to live blog on the Daily News' On the Red Carpet site so you can follow the night's activities from that site. I won't be posting from Out In Hollywood any more today.
Tomorrow, I'll have a best-of-the-Emmy-blog post on this site in case you miss tonight's blow-by-blow action.

Greg's Emmy picks...

Ever since I won an office Oscar pool about 10 years ago, I've felt like I have a knack for picking award show winners. Nevermind that I have never won another pool. I remain an award handicapping expert...in my own mind.
Here are my picks in most of the major categories at tonight's Emmy Awards, who I WANT to win and who will LIKELY win:

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaemmy.jpgDrama Series:
My pick: "Grey's Anatomy"
Will win: "Sopranos"
It's the last season of the mob drama. Still, "Heroes" could cause an upset.

Lead Actor, Drama Series:
My pick: Denis Leary ("Rescue Me"
Will win: James Gandolfini ("The Sopranos")
Gandolfini has won three times already and I see a fourth Emmy as a send-off. But Hugh Laurie could just as easily win for "House" while former winners James Spader and Kiefer Sutherland will miss out this time. Personally, I think Leary is absolutely superb in "Rescue."

Lead Actress, Drama Series:
My pick: Sally Field ("Brothers & Sisters")
Will win: Kyra Sedgwick ("The Closer")
If either of these women won, I'll be very happy. Sedgwick carries her show while Field is the glue that holds her together. Very different performances but both stellar. Edie Falco could be part of an Emmy sweep for "Sopranos" but she already has three Emmys for her role and the competition is very strong.

Supporting Actor, Drama Series:
My pick: T.R. Knight ("Grey's Anatomy")
Will win: Michael Imperioli ("The Sopranos")
It'll be part of a "Sopranos" semi-sweep. If William Shatner wins again, i might have to vomit backstage but if Knight wins, I'll do a little jig.

Supporting Actress, Drama Series:
My pick: Rachel Griffiths ("Brothers & Sisters")
Will win: Rachel Griffiths ("Brothers & Sisters")
She is the class of the field and had some wonderfully emotional scenes. Three "Grey's Anatomy" stars should cancel each other out with Chandra Wilson having the best chance of breaking out. I don't see Aida Turturro as part of the "Sopranos" semi-sweep.

Comedy Series:
My pick: "Ugly Betty"
Will win: "Ugly Betty"
It's a high-quality category with "Entourage," "The Office," "30 Rock" and "Two and a Half Men" as competition. But "Betty" stood above the rest in its debut season.

Lead Actor, Comedy Series:
My Pick: Charlie Sheen
Will win: Alec Baldwin
I think Sheen is overlooked because his role is so low-key. But, he is terrific on "Two and a Half Men" and deserving of an Emmy win. Baldwin won the Golden Globe and the SAG Award so the only question is if voters will be turned off by the well-publicized troubles in his private life. If that's the case, Steve Carell will win.

Lead Actress, Comedy Series:
My pick: America Ferrera
Will win: America Ferrera
Easiest category to call.

Supporting Actor, Comedy Series:
My picki: Neil Patrick Harris
Will win: Neil Patrick Harris
I just feel like it's his year in every way and he is clearly the best thing about "How I Met Your Mother."

Supporting Actress, Comedy Series:
My pick: Conchata Ferrell
Will win: Jaime Pressly
Personally, I can't watch "My Name is Earl" mainly because of Jason Lee's mustache (silly, I know). But Pressly seems to be the one to beat even though Vanessa Williams is the most deserving for "Ugly Betty." But my sentimental pick is Conchata Ferrell who is an absolute riot on "Two and a Half Men" and elevates any TV show or movie that she's in.

Miniseries or movie:
My pick: "Broken Trail"
Will win: "Broken Trail"
This seems like a sure-thing.

Lead Actress, Miniseries or Movie:
My pick: Helen Mirren
Will win: Helen Mirren
Mirren is still the queen of voters hearts and should take home the Emmy in this category for the second year in a row. The fact that Debra Messing is even nominated for the fluff "The Starter Wife" shows that Mirren's only real competition will be two-time Emmy winner Gena Rowlands.

Lead Actor, Miniseries or Movie:
My pick: Robert Duvall
Will win" Robert Duvall
Tough competition but my gut tells me the Oscar winner will prevail for "Broken Trail" over fellow nominees Jim Broadbent, William H. Macy, Matthew Perry and Tom Selleck.

Reality-Competition Category:
My pick: Amazing Race
Will win: Amazing Race
This show is the most ambitious of all the nominees including ratings giants "American Idol" and "Dancing With the Stars." It's so superbly edited and brilliantly paced that each week, you really feel you have gone on an adventure. It should win yet another Emmy in this category.

Variety, Music or Comedy Series:
My pick: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart"
Will win: "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart"
Sorry Letterman, Conan and even Bill Maher, Stewart had another kick-ass year.

Performance - Variety of Music Program:
My pick: Jon Stewart
Will win: Jon Stewart
See above.

Reminder: I will be live-blogging from backstage at the Emmys today beginning at around 3 p.m. Go to On the Red Carpet.

My chat w/Lisa Rinna about her new Emmy gig...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarinna.jpgNo, I didn't ask her about her famous lips so I don't know if they are from Mother Nature or from Dr. 90210.
But Lisa Rinna and I did talk about her gig as co-host of TV Guide Channel's pre-Emmy show on which she is teamed with the charismatic Joey Fatone. Both had their profiles boosted by their stints as contestsnts on ABC's "Dancing With The Stars."
This is the pair that replaces red carpet legend Joan Rivers and her tag-along daughter, Melissa Rivers. I think Joan Rivers is a riot and so does Rinna, that's why she won't even try to emulate her.
"No one can touch Joan Rivers — a comedic genius — and I won't even try," Rinna tells me. "There is only one Joan Rivers, and she created this whole format."

You can read our entire interview in the LA.COM section of the Daily News!

Deborah Gibson rooting for Neil Patrick Harris at Emmys...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagibson.jpgIt's been four years since Deborah Gibson co-starred with Neil Patrick Harris in the Broadway production of "Cabaret." But the teen pop princess turned stage star still feels warmly toward the "How I Met Your Mother Star" who is up for the outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series Emmy on Sunday.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaharris.jpgWe gabbed last night at the Los Angeles Confidential magazine party and she told me how proud she is of the way NPH came out publicly came out last fall.
"I was really happy about that. I think his nomination proves that it doesn't pigeon-hole you like it may have in the past. He plays a womanizer on his show and he's nominated. So, good for him - he's made it all work. He's been able to be candid about who he is personally and still thrive professionally so that's a good message to send out."
Gibson also had plenty to say about the current situation with such young stars like Britney Spears whose train-wreck of a career hit a new low on Sunday with a disastrous performance at the VMAs in Las Vegas...

2007 Kennedy Center honoree: Miss Diana Ross!

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadianaross.jpg
Love this! The 2007 Kennedy Center honorees were announced today and it is thrilling to see that among the recipients of one of the most prestigious awards our country can bestow upon an artist will be Diana Ross. This is a singing legend who has never even won a Grammy (c'mon, Milli Vanilli won a Grammy) or really properly gotten her due for what has been an extraordnary 45 years-plus career.
All the hits with the Supremes like "Can't Hurry Love," "Reflections," "I Hear a Symphony," "Stop! In the Name of Love," "You Can't Hurry Love," "Love Child," and "Someday We'll Be Together" then all the solo smashes: "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "Touch Me in the Morning," "Love Hangover," "Do You Know Where You're Going To," "Upside Down," "I'm Coming Out," "Endless Love" and dance faves "Chain Reaction," "The Boss," and Ross' remake of "I Will Survive."
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaross.jpg
Add to that the soundtracks from her films "Lady Sings the Blues" and the "Wiz" (I'm not gonna even mention 'Double Platinum") and you have a singular career.
It's ironic that I came across this sight on the Kennethinthe212.com site since a few weeks ago, Kenneth and I were sharing with each other our love for Diana Ross and experiences at her concerts over the years.
Silly things like the WMAs might get more attention, but the Kennedy Center Honors are a big deal. The honors recognize a lifetime of contributions to American culture through the performing arts. Ross will be honored along with pianist Leon Fleisher, actor Steve Martin, singer Brian Wilson and film director Martin Scorsese.
"With their extraordinary talent, creativity and perseverance, the five 2007 honorees have transformed the way we, as Americans, see, hear and feel the performing arts," Kennedy Center Chairman Stephen A. Schwarzman said Tuesday in announcing the honorees. "We will forever be thankful for the great gift they have shared with us."
The Kennedy Center honors will be recorded and broadcast Dec. 26 for the 30th consecutive year on CBS as a two-hour prime-time special.

Emmy fever has begun...

aaaaaaagriffin.jpg
After watching the U.S. Open final, I had to rush over to a party on Sunset Blvd. honoring this year's Emmy-nominated producers. Gabbed with all kinds of folks and will post my conversations with T.R. Knight, Judith Light and Rex Lee, among others, tomorrow. For now, I'm playing catch up with some of the winners from last night's Creative Arts Emmy Awards at the Shine Auditorium. Among the winners were Kathy Griffin (above) whose "My Life on the D-List" show won Outstanding Reality Program. How cool is that? I think this means Kathy might actually have moved up to the C-List.
aaaaaaajudith1.jpg
The lovely Judith Light. She was nominated for outstanding guest actress in a comedy for "Ugly Betty." Next year, she will be ineligible in the category because she has been made a series regular! Judith, who has a role in the film "Ira & Abby" out on Friday, lost out to Elaine Stritch (below) but was serene as could be when I saw her on Sunday. She does have two Emmy Awards for "One Life To Live." You know those 55 (or whatever!) Emmy nominations Susan Lucci received? Light won two of those.
aaaaaastritch.jpg
If Light had to lose, at least it was to a real showbiz legend. Elaine Stritch, whose "Here's to the Ladies Who Lunch" from "Company" should be heard by everyone at least once in their life, won an Emmy for her guest role on "30 Rock." She won an Emmy a few years ago for her ome-woman show as well as a Tony. She may be in her 80s, but the kid's still got it!
aaaaaaajeansmart.jpgaaaaaadixie1.jpg
Jean Smart (left) was nominated for "24" while Dixie Carter was up for her delicious stint on "Desperate Housewives." Neither won (Smart has two Emmys already) but both of these former "Designing Women" dazzled in red. I have to say, I think it was criminal that Dixie was never even nominated for her role as Julia Sugarbaker on "Women." It's one of the great roles on one of the greatest shows in TV history.
aaaaaaaneil.jpg
...and finally, the dashing Neil Patrick Harris, up for best supporting actor at next Sunday's regular Emmys, was at the Creative Arts show as a presenter...

A hosting job that is NOT going to Ryan Seacrest...

aaajoey.jpgA source tells me that joining Lisa Rinna on the red carpet for the TV Guide Channel Emmy pre-show will be...Joey Fatone! Ryan, as you already know, is hosting the ceremony, the E! pre-show, checking tickets at the door, vacuuming the red carpet, working as a seat filler AND making deserts for the Governor's Ball.
This leaves a gig open for Joey who has been red-hot since his runner-up finish on "Dancing With the Stars" last spring.
Joey is hosting the hit NBC prime-time game show "The Singing Bee" and has proven himself to be quite a charmer. Rinna, I can take or leave. Joey is a ham, but in a fun way. Rinna is a ham, but in an irritating way.
So, this is the team that replaces Joan and Mellissa Rivers. The still very funny Joan, as always, is as busy as ever. Mellissa, however, isn't.

Why Ryan Seacrest got picked to host the Emmys...

aaaryannnnnnn.jpg
I'm still a bit uninspired by the choice of Ryan Seacrest to host the Emmys. Just such a blah choice. Was flipping through my Daily Variety and Seacrest explained his philosophy on hosting the Sept. 16 kudofest: "I don't feel I need to do a song and dance and 15 minutes of jokes. The way I'm looking at the whole show, it's about elevating on their night, as opposed to making it my night...I'm not going to pretend to be something I'm not. I plan to honor and class of the Emmy."
Greg's two cents: That sounds BORING. But wise since Seacrest can't sing, can't dance, and can't tell jokes. He's basically a robo-host and will actually be doing double duty that night hosting E! channel's red carpet pre-show. Is there NO ONE else in Holllywood who can host these things?
Says Emmy show executive producer Ken Ehrlich: "There's a real likeability factor with Ryan, as well as an ability to deal with a live, hopefully unpredictable series of events. I will feel very confident knowing up there in a live situation."

OK, so you will be confident. But will you be entertained?

August 20, 2007

Why Ryan Seacrest as Emmys host?

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaseacrest.jpgI admit it, I've been kind of a bitch today. It's part sleep-deprivation and part being annoyed with a lot of stuff going on in the world right now!
OK, so Ryan Seacrest in gonna host the Emmy Awards. WHY? FOX already gets monster ratings for "American Idol" so Ryan does not need the exposure. Sure he's cute in that meterosexual way, but between "Idol," "E! News Daily," and his radio show, Seacrest is already over-exposed. But more than that, he's just not that interesting/. His humor does not seem to come from an authentic place and he is merely a professional host. I'd think the Emmys would work better either without a host or with a comic. Conan O'Brien and Ellen DeGeneres have both done well in the past and there are plenty of other funny people on the planet who can enhance the telecast.
Ryan Seacrest?
Why????

GLAAD Awards will now be open to gay media...

This is a good decision. With gay media such as Logo and Here! making major breaktroughs, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has decided to include gay media in its annual awards which recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and the issues that affect their lives.
But those awards had been limited to mainstream print and broadcast organizations and the exclusion of LGBT media had led to some increasingly bitter feelings. Now all media can compete in the existing categories.
glaaad.jpg“With the expansion of cable channels and niche programming, LGBT created and consumed media is more readily available than ever before,” stated GLAAD President Neil Giuliano. (pictured below with Ang Lee) “Our Board has decided to incorporate LGBT media submissions into the existing competitive categories. We welcome the opportunity for LGBT media to submit their journalism and programming for consideration.”
In the 1990s, the GLAAD Media Awards had specific LGBT media categories. Due to a lack of submissions and a tension arising from the LGBT media that did not want to be judged and evaluated by GLAAD, the categories were eliminated in 2000.

The four dates and venues for the 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards taking place in 2008 were also announced. The first event will be held in New York at the Marriott Marquis on Monday, March 17, 2008. The Los Angeles event will return for the seventh consecutive year to the Kodak Theatre on Saturday, April 26. The San Francisco event will be held on Saturday, May 10 at the San Francisco Marriott. For the third consecutive year, GLAAD's event honoring LGBT images in Spanish-language media will be held in South Florida on Saturday, April 12 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

Neil Patrick Harris on his Emmy nod...

I'm fried from Outfest closing night but will have all the highllights and a review of the film "Kiss the Bride" in a bit. Meanwhile, I came across this via AfterElton.com: the site Hollywood.com caught up with Neil Patrick Harris last week on the day of his Emmy nomination for "How I Met Your Mother" on which he plays the womanizing Barney.
neilph2.jpgHere are some highlights of that conversation:
Hollywood.com: Where were you when you heard about your nomination?
Neil Patrick Harris: I was dead asleep in bed. I decided that any kind of buildup that I brought to it would only crush my dreams if things weren't positive, so I just decided to sleep in. Then I got a great call in the morning and then the calls kept coming in and I jumped in a car and went and did a bunch of interviews.

HW: Who was the first call?
NPH: My great friend James Carpinello, who broke his foot doing Xanadu and wasn't able to open the show, called me. He was watching them live.

HW: ...Alyson Hannigan screamed into your phone?
NPH: She was very excited and very sweet. She's such a wonderful girl. And Josh [Radnor] and Jason [Segel] both called and they were super happy too. I gotta say, the nomination is really nice, but nicer was all the people that texted and called me. All my friends called to say wonderful things. That was nicer than any of it.

Isaiah Washington on T.R. Knight's Emmy nod: "He finally got the attention he deserved"

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaisaiah.jpgIt seems that a different Isaiah Washington showed up to talk to "Access Hollywood" yesterday than the one who appeared on "Larry King Live" a few weeks back disparaging his former "Grey's Anatomy" co-star T.R. Knight and essentially blaming him for everything and himsefl for nothing.
Knight was nominated for an Emmy award for best supporting actor yesterday. Washington said he did not submit his name for consideration: "I didn’t want the pain of being nominated and losing."
Washington told Billy Bush: "T.R. Knight is a good actor. He has been a wonderful actor from day one. T.R. Knight, congratulations. He finally got the attention he deserved. Whether or not it serves any particular agenda that he’s nominated now, to make a point, I can’t speak on that. That’s theoretical. I don’t know, but good for him."
Agenda? Yeah, today an Emmy nominatiion, tomorrow world domination. Go T.R. Knight!

Greg's Emmy recap...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabetty.jpg
Yay T.R., Neil, Ellen and Ian - four openly gay performers who got Emmy nominations Thursday morning. But sitting there in the Television Academy theater veeeeery early this morning to watch Kyra Sedgwick and Jon Cryer announce the nominations, I felt a lot of excitement about some of the other nominees - shows that are gay-friendly and performers who are gay faves.
First off: the sensational "Ugly Betty," which has gay characters and a transgender character, got a well-deserved 11 nominations. They include a best actress nod for America Fererra who I'd say is the front-runner, in addition to the first Latina ever nominated in this category. The only other cast member nominated - in the supporting category -was Vanessa Williams for her delicious work as Wilhelmina Slater.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalight.jpgIn the guest actress category: the year of Judith Light continues! Judith was nominated for her role as Claire Meade. Next year she will have to compete in the best supporting actress category because she is now a regular cast member. Congrats Judith!!! Among Judith's competition is Salma Hayak, nominated as guest actress for the same show.
i'm rooting for Judith in this category but I'm also thrilled to see Dixie Carter also nominated for her turn as the evil Gloria Hodges on "Desperate Housewives." Dixie, one of the great ladies in showbiz, never got nominated in the seven seasons she spent playing the on and only Julia Sugarbaker on "Designing Women." She was criminally overlooked as was most of the cast except for Delta Burke who got two nods throughout the show's run.
Hooray for Judith and Dixie! To make the category even more interesting: the great Elaine Stritch is nominated for her appearance on "30 Rock."
Dixie's former "Designing" co-star Jean Smart, already a two-time Emmy winner for "Frasier," is nominated yet again in the guest actress-drama category for "24."
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasally.jpgOK, on to "Brothers & Sisters." Hooray for Sally Field! She nabbed one of the six spots in the best actress in a drama series category for her consistently wonderful work as Nora Walker in the ABC drama. It marks her seventh Emmy nomination overall. She has won twice [not to mention those two Oscars}. I'd love to see Sally win but I think Kyra Sedgwick should take it for "The Closer." She carries that show and is the reason it's the highest-rated drama in the history of standard cable. Rachel Griffiths, who plays Field's daughter on "Brothers & Sister," earned a well-deserved best supporting actress nomination.

Also of gay interest: "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" nominated again for Outstanding Reality Program, "Project Runway" up for Outstanding Reality Competition, and the "Gay Witch Hunt" episode of "The Office" was nominated for Outstanding Writing
And finally, even though I didn't love "The Starter Wife," I liked parts of it and I like that there was a prominent gay character. Debra Messing, a past Emmy winner for "Will & Grace," was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a miniseries and the series itself was nominated.
Next year, all we need is a nomination for Matthew Rhys for "Brothers & Sisters" and Rex Lee in "Entourage" and I'll be as happy as a clam at high tide.

T.R. Knight, NPH and Ellen among LGBT performers with Emmy nods...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatr.jpgIsn't this great?
All the garbage T.R. Knight has had to put up with off-camera this year. He's kept his grace and kept working and on Thursday, he was nominated for an Emmy Award for best supporting actor in a drama series for his role as George O'Malley in "Grey's Anatomy." Since I just spoke to him the other night at Outfest, I'm feeling really excited for him. It was among the 10 nominations for the hit ABC show. He was the only male cast member to receive a nomination. On the female side: Chandra Wilson, Sandra Oh and Katherine Heigl all received supporting actress nods.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaneil.jpgMeanwhile, the mega-talented Neil Patrick Harris was the only member of the ensemble cast of the CBS comedy "How I Met Your Mother" to get an Emmy nomination. He was nominated in the best supporting actor category for his hilarious performance as the womanizing Barney.
It's clear that Emmy voters believe openly gay actors can convincingly play straight on screen. Let's see it it spills onto the big screen so some of these closeted movie stars will feel comfortable enough to come out!
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaellen.jpgAnd then there is that crazy gal, that fun, dancing, glorious Ellen DeGeneres. She already has an Emmy for her old ABC sitcom and a truckload of daytime Emmys for her talk show and on Thursday, she was nominated for her turn as host of the Academy Awards. I also don't want to forget the great Ian McKellen, nominated for guest actor in a comedy series for an appearance on "Extras."

Congrats to all! I hope they win!

Andy, Serena and James Blake clean up well for ESPYs...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaespn.jpg
Andy Roddick and Serena Williams look like they have recovered from their disappointing Wimbledons where each was among the favorites to win the title. Andy has the hardcourt season coming up where he always excells and Serena is probably just as happy that her sister Venus won the tournament. Meanwhile there's James Blake who it seems will never be a grand slam champion. But he sure is handsome as heck!
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaespn1.jpg
WHAT is Serena pointing at??? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaespn.jpg
Eye candy heaven...I sure wish I had gone to the ESPYs...

The two Jennifers unite for classic "Dreamgirls" duet...

aaaaaaaaaaaadream.jpgAnd speaking of the BET Awards, there is much buzz today over the unbelievable duet of "And I'm Tellin' You, I'm Not Going" by Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson and Tony winner Jennifer Holliday who originated the role of Effie on Broadway 25 years ago. Holliday had complained loudly that she felt snubbed by those involved in the making of the "Dreamgirls" movie ih which Hudson played Effie. But the two divas were aq dynamic duo and gave each other plenty of room to soar. Hudson introduced Holliday as "my Dreamgirl, a true Dreamgirl." I came away feeling that the performances were so different that each has carved out their own piece of history. We don't have to engage in a silly "who is better game." They are both...SENSATIONAL!
It was a great night for Hudson who also picked up awards for best movie actress and best newcomer.
aaaaaaaaaaaabet.jpg

Diana Ross feted at the BET Awards...

aaaaaaaaaaaaross.jpg
I love the way Diana Ross' five children always show up for mom. I watched a Barbara Walters Mother's Day interview with them 3-4 years ago and the family bond seems quite genuine. So even if Diana doesn't sell as many records as she used to, she's still a great star and better still, she's a great mom.
Ross was honored for her stellar career of 45-plus years at last night's BET Awards...and she's still going strong! Here's my thought: It's time for the Grammys and the Kennedy Center Honors to start thinking long and hard about honoring this music legend with their lifetime achievement kudos.
She deserves that and more...

Ellen wins Emmy and pays tribute to Rosie...

ellen.jpgHappy Saturday... I'm in Palm Springs for a getaway weekend at La Dolce Vita Resort working on the tan and trying to get some reading done! But the blog beckons because I just found out that Ellen DeGeneres won the Emmy last night for Outstanding Talk Show host...again. Can't complain really because Ellen rocks. But was rooting for the ladies of "The View" who have never won because it would have been a tribute to Rosie O'Donnell's provocative year on the show.
Ellen was generous to Rosie during her acceptance speech, she told the audience that O'Donnell should have won: "I liked what she did. This was the year she should have won. I wanted to acknowledge Rosie because she has done a lot. ... I don't know who should replace her, but I don't think it should be Paris Hilton. That would not work," she said.
According to TMZ.com, retiring "Price is Right" host Bob Barker also gave props to Rosie and said he thought she'd be a great replacement for him. "There's no doubt in my mind she could do the show. Now, whether they want a lady host, I don't know."
A lady host? Bob really is 83 years old...

Tony Awards ratings are low...

aaaaaaaaaafantasia.jpg
Sheesh. i realize they aren't as intelligent or inspiring as say, the MTV Movie Awards, but Sunday night's Tony Awards telecast was a gem and yet they suffered their lowest ratings since 1992 despite such a spectacular year at the box office for Broadway. Even a show-stopping performance from Fantasia didn't druim of interest. Hmmmmmmmm. Maybe that other Tony, as in Soprano, did this Tony in. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the three-hour CBS telecast averaged 6.2 million viewers. Last year's show had 6.4 million viewers.
aaaaaaaaatonyss.jpgThe Tony Awards dropped steadily from 7.2 million at 8 p.m. to 6.4 million at 9 p.m., when it competed against "The Sopranos" conclusion on HBO and the tipoff of the NBA finals. It fell to 5.3 million viewers at 10:30 p.m., when the major awards were being handed out.
How could you not watch the last friggen half hour of a terrific show? That's when David Hyde Pierce and Christine Ebersole won their Tonys for their respective musicals.
Well, it was a no-brainer for me. The Tonys rank above the NBA and a mobster family any time!

Greg's Tony Award recap...

aaaaaaaaaabernadette.jpg
I love the Tony Awards because 1) I love the theater and 2) They are soooooooo gay!!!
The camera pans to the nominees and many of the men have their partners looking at them lovingly - the way Nancy used to look at Ronnie. Take that Republicans!
redcarpet36.jpgredcarpet28.jpgredcarpet19.jpg
What a night! A gay man (David Hyde Pierce) wins best actor in a musical, divas and gay icons Patti LuPone, Bernadette Peters and Harvey Fierstein are among the presenters, Cynthia Nixon and her girlfriend get tons of camera time, Neil Patrick Harris presents and Mark Indelicante, the fashion-loving nephew from "Ugly Betty," introduced a number from "Mary Poppins."
redcarpet44.jpgredcarpet41.jpgredcarpet59.jpg
In addition, straight but gay-friendly hunks Taye Diggs, Patrick Wilson and Harry Connick Jr. are also presenters as is my favorite aging pop star Donny Osmond. And this is the night that "American Idol" winner Fantasia cemented her status as Broadway's newest star after belting out one helluva number from "The Color Purple" in which she currently stars.
549407.jpgFAVORITE SPEECH: Julie White, best actress in a drama ("The Little Dog Laughed") beat, among others, past winners Angela Lansbury, Vanessa Redgrave and Swoosie Kurtz. "Oh my goodness, you Tony voters, what a buncha wacky kids...I can't feel my hands! Is that a bad thing?" She played the "hideous agent" of a closeted actor who she is discouraging from coming out. "My agents have never been hideous to me," she said, "to my face!"
FAVORITE FUNNY LINE: Presenter Zach Braff, who introduced a number from best musical winner "Spring Awakenings" said: "I'm tired of hiding who i am. My name is Zach Braff and I love musical theater."
FAVORITE INSPIRATIONAL LINE: Best actor in a drama winner Frank Langella ("Frost/Nixon") who said of actors competing for the Tony: "The struggle, the striving for success, that's a race you can't lose."
redcarpet49.jpgPERFECT CHOICE: The evening started off perfectly with four-time Tony winner Angela Lansbury, who is back on Broadway for the first time in ages and a 2007 nominee for "Deuce," opening the show. She recalled how this was the 40th year the awards have had a full televised broadcast and recalled hosting back in 1967 when she and her "Mame" co-star Bea Arthur sang "Bosom Buddies" from the show that won them both Tonys.
NEIL PATRICK HARRIS and Christina Applegate were the evening's first presenters. NPH is charming and funny and, I think, would have made a terrific host! They did not have a host this year and it was fine but surely someone could have filled Hugh Jackman's shoes! Billy Crudup wins the first award for featured actor in a play ("The Coast of Utopia") and all I can think of is "How could he have left Mary Louise Parker for Claire Danes when she was seven months pregnant with their son?" I mean, it's none of my business and it is time to move on and yet still, I judge.
gallagher_l.jpgThen this adorable kid named John Gallagher Jr.(right), just 22 years old, wins for featured actor in a musical for "Spring Awakenings" and i didn't recognize him with his normal hair. In the show, he's got a real wacky do which you saw later in the telecast and that I saw when he performed on "Regis & Kelly" a few days ago.
aaaaaaaaaaaudra.jpg
Among the other things I enjoyed on the telecast was Audra MacDonald's performance from "110 in the Sun." She was so good that it's no wonder she has already won four Tonys. She didn't win a fifth tonight because she was beaten in the best actress in a musical category by Christine Ebersole who won for "Grey Gardens."
07tonys-live-ebersole.jpgIt was the mega-talented Eberlose's second Tony win and she also performed magnificantly on the show. She said in her speech: "I left Hollywood when they told me I was over the hill. Now I'm standing here with this most distinguished award for what I consider to be the role of a lifetime..I'm over the hill in the role of a lifetime, This is so encouraging."
Hollywood's loss is Broadway's gain.

David Hyde Pierce wins his first Tony Award!

aaaaaaaaaahyde1.jpgWow! David Hyde Pierce has had quite a week. First he publicly acknowledges that he is a gay man (surprising few but still, it is nice) and on Sunday, he won the Tony Award for best actor in a musical for "Curtains."
He performed earlier in the telecast and was so damned good that I was sure he'd win until I heard Raul Esparza sing "Being Alive" from "Company." But David won and was thankful for being in a show "where a character actor could be the lead character" and he also thanked "my partner Brian - it's 24 years of listening to your damn notes - that's why I'm up here tonight."
Making it al even more perfect was that his Tony was presented by oh-so-out Harvey Fierstein and the ageless, gorgeous Bernadette Peters.
I will blog about the rest of the Tonys in a separate post...just wanted to acknowledge the latest high-profile actor to come out on this night of his great triumph!
Keep reading for some of his comments backstage as reported by Broadway.com...

Equal time for MTV Award kisses...

aaaaaaaamtv.jpg
Hey, I posted the pics of Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen going at it at the MTV Movie Awards last night so here's equal time for the girls: essica Biel gets really close and personal backstage with Sarah Silverman. But, sorry guys and girls, they don't actually lock lips - much to the everlasting disappointment of straight men and lesbians everywhere!

Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen win best kiss at MTV Awards...

talladegakiss.jpg
I already know that it's really cool to see two guys kiss and so does the MTV Awards it seems. For the second straight year, the award for "best movie kiss" went to two males: Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen who memorably locked lips in "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby." On Sunday night's show, they re-enacted the scene and even took it a step further...rolling around on the floor! Last year, the award went to Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger for their sexy smooches in "Brokeback Mountain." Only Jake was present then to pick up the award so there was no chance for a re-enactment...
talladegakiss4.jpg
Ioan-Gruffudd-mtv-movie-awa.jpgHere are "Fantastic Four" co-stars Chris Evans and Ioan Gruffudd who have a sequel out later this summer. I'm stating the obvious but is Chris Evans not the most adorable man alive? I remember the first thing I saw him in: "Cellular." I thought he was terrific in that movie, co-starring Kim Basinger. And I'm glad to see that his stardom has grown since then since that means we get to see lots and lots of him!

The Alma Awards vs. the CCNMA banquet...

eva-longoria-dress-changes.jpg
sara-ramirez-2007-alma-awar.jpgWell, Eva Longoria of "Desperate Housewives" hosted last night's Alma Awards in Los Angeles and had more costume changes than Cher! What a diva. Longoria is gorgeous and wears clothes well as evidenced by this photo album from JustJared.com. But personally, I'd probably prefer a woman like the lovely Sara Ramirez of "Grey's Anatomy" who's character of Callie is married to T.R. Knight's George on the show. Ramirez is a wonderous talent who won the Tony Award for best featured actress in a musical for "Spamalot" a few years back.
But, of course, I REALLY prefer Rodrigo Santoro of "Lost" and the film "300." He is a beauty!!!
Rodrigo-Santoro-2007-ALMA-a.jpg

MEANWHILE, not all the Latinos in LA were at the Alma Awards last night. Some of us, like me and my LA Daily News colleagues, were at the Biltmore Hotel downtown for the California Chicano News Media Association Scholarship dinner. Here are some pics of my work buds and I at this very worthwhile event that supports aspiring journalists...

Add Harry Connick Jr. to list of Tony presenters...

aaaaaaaaconnick1.jpgaaaaaaaaconnick2.jpg
I'm not sure if I've ever mentioned this before but my dream man is Harry Connick Jr. He is a wonderful singer, a good actor, and just oh-so damned handsome. Those lips, those eyes, that hair. I know he's a happily married man with kids so this is just a fun little fantasy. Don't you HATE when you make a comment about how hot someone is and someone says: "He's STRAIGHT!" or "He's MARRIED!"
Oh really? Because I'm sure otherwise I'd have a chance to date him...DUH.
aaaaaaaaconnick.jpgOK, so why am I bringing up Harry anyway? It's because he's going to be a presenter on the Tony Awards next month! He starred in "The Pajama Game" last season and was utterly terrific when he performed on the show. The lad really learned to dance!
The annual awards honoring the best of the Broadway season enjoyed a rise in TV viewership last year when the three-hour program was the most watched Tonys since 2003.
In addition to dreamy Harry, other well-known names on tap to present are out actor Neil Patrick Harris, not out actor Kevin Spacey, formerly out actress Anne Heche, as well as a trio of Broadway legends: Angela Lansbury, Audra McDonald, Bernadette Peters who have 10 Tonys between them!
I. Can't. Wait.

T.R. Knight and Cynthia Nixon host the Obie Awards...

aaaaaaaobie.jpg
The 52nd Annual Village Voice Obie Awards, a major honor in the Off-Broadway community, were presented Monday 21 at New York University's Jack H. Skirball Center for the Performing Arts and were hosted by out actors
Cynthia Nixon and T.R. Knight. While Nixon is best known to audiences as the sardonic Miranda from "Sex and the City," she is also a respected stage actress who won the Tony Award last year for "The Rabbit Hole."
The Village Voice gives out the annual Obie awards, which honor Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway shows with recipients chosen by a panel without the complication of selecting or announcing nominees. Presenters included 2007 Tony nomineee Angela Lansbury, Camryn Manheim, Michael Cerveris, Terrence McNally, Stephanie March, Liev Schreiber, William Ivey Long and Tony winner Anika Noni Rose who co-starred in the big screen version of "Dreamgirls."

Rosie to skip the Emmys...

300px-TheViewCurrent 2.jpgIn its 10 years on the air, "The View" has never taken home the Emmy for outstanding hosts. Nine nominations, nine losses. But with Rosie O'Donnell along for the ride this year, there is the thought that she, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Joy Behar and Barbara Walters could finally take home Emmy gold. So Rosie, who has about a month left on the show before she departs, says this morning that one of her kids has a "school thing" and so she will not be attending then she says: "If this show does win best host, the credit goes to Barbara Walters for hiring me."
Joy Behar, recognizing a slight when she hears one says: "What? We couldn't have won before you?"
Walters, trying to be diplomatic, said: "This has been an interesting year."
Then Joy shares her thoughts on why they have never won best host: "There's always one of us to hate." So if they win this year, maybe it's not because of Rosie but "maybe they just hated someone previous to us."
Hmmmmmmm. I know she doesn't mean Meredith Viera, who has a roomful of Emmys of her own for other shows, or Debbie Matenapolis who was more annoying on the show than hate-inducing, or Lisa Ling who was a nice addition the three years she was there. So, Joy must be referring to...
STAR JONES REYNOLDS!
Sheesh..I oughta be a detective.

Gay-themed "The Little Dog Laughed" among the Tony nominees...

aaaaaadog.jpg
"The Little Dog Laughed" starring Tom Everett Scott as a closeted Hollywood actor and Johnny Galecki as his rent boy, received a Tony Award nomination Tuesday for best play. Also nominated in the category are: "The Coast of Utopia," "Frost/Nixon," "The Little Dog Laughed," and "Radio Golf."
Nominated for Best Musical are "Curtains." "Grey Gardens." "Mary Poppins," and "Spring Awakening."

Among the more familiar names in the acting categories are four-time Emmy winner Angela Lansbury nominated for her Broadway comeback in "Deuce." To win a fifth Tony, she'll have to beat, among others, fellow past Tony winners Vanessa Redgrave and Swoosie Kurtz. David Hyde Pierce, multiple Emmy winner for TV's "Frasier," is up for best actor in a musical ("Curtains") while the best actress in a musical category has such heavyweights as four-time Tony winner Audra McDonald ("100 in the Shade") and past Tony winner Christine Ebersole ("Grey Gardens").

Also nominated: movie stars Billy Crudup and Ethan Hawke are among those competing in the featured actor in a play category.

MTV Movie Awards have some gay-friendly nominations...

aaaaakiss.jpg
The MTV Awards are obviously not to be taken seriously but they sure are fun! The nominations have just come out and I am pleased to see that "Little Miss Sunshine" which has Steve Carell portraying a gay man, is up for best movie. It competes with the hunk-filled "300," "Blades of Glory," "Borat," and "Pirates of the Caribbean 2." I love that in the best kiss category, the lip-lock between Will Ferrell & Sacha Baron Cohen nominated for "Talladega Nights." If they win, they follow last year's victory by Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger for "Brokeback Mountain."
aaaaablunt.jpg
And check out the best performance nominees (no gender categories here): Both Jennifer Hudson AND Beyonce Knowles for "Dreamgirls," the dreamy Gerard Butler in "300," Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley in "Pirates 2," and Will Smith in "The Pursuit of Happyness."
Will Smith's son and "Happyness" co-star, Jaden Smith, was nominated in the breakthrough performance category but will have a hard time veating out the delicious Emily Blunt in "The Devil Wears Prada" (pictured above in all her wicked glory) and "Abigail Breslin ("Little Miss Sunshine," among others including Justin Timberlake in "Alpha Dog."
.aaaaadevil.jpgMeanwhile, the fabulous Meryl Streep got a nod in the best villain category for "Prada" and should be a shoo-in! Also on the gay-ish front, "Hairspray" is among the films nominated in the "best summer movie that you haven't seen yet" category.

Isaiah Washington to Emmy: I'm not for your consideration...

aaaawashington.jpg
Embattled "Grey's Anatomy" co-star Isaiah Washington has decided not to submit himself for supporting actor consideration at this year's Emmys, Daily Variety reports.
Perhaps this should come as no surprise since Washington has gotten more attention at awards shows this year for his off-screen behavior. At the Golden Globe Awards in January, he stated to the worldwide press that he had not called out co-star T.R. Knight a "f****t." This reignited a storm that began last fall when he had an on-set scuffle with Patrick Dempsey and used the F-bomb, refering to Knight.
At the NAACP Awards this year, Washington won the best actor award and was given a standing ovation that some observers - including me - found innappropriate. In contrast, Knight received a memorable, thunderous standiing ovation at Saturday night's GLAAD Awards for coming out and handlinbg Washington's erratic behavior with grace and dignity.
The entire cast of "Grey's Anatomy" is submitted in the supporting category except for Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey who compete as leads.

A night of nights for T.R. Knight...

4-STAGE-Knight.jpg
At Saturday night's VIP dinner following the GLAAD Awards ceremony, I doubt that T.R. Knight had the chance to even get a bite of his meal. He was surrounded by well-wishers about 3-5 people deep at all times who wanted to congratulate him or snap a photo with him. And I was one of them! "I'm just happy to be invited," T.R. told me. Not only was he invited - and his show nominated in the best individual episode category - but T.R. was the talk of the evening. When he walked out to open the show, the standing ovation was so long and heartfelt, you could see him standing there just taking in what must have been a surreal experience for an actor who came out under some duress only last fall. He issued a statement acknowledging that he is gay after T.R.'s "Grey's Anatomy" co-star Isaiah Washington refered to him as a f****t during an on-set squirmish with Patrick Dempsey.
The awards show circuit had been a real roller coaster for T.R. in 2007 but maybe that moment, and that kind of incredible support from the audience at the Kodak Theatre, made it somehow worth it. It was at the Golden Globe Awards in January where Washington caused a scene backstage while being interviewed with his castmates by announcing: "I did not call T.R. a f****t!" Mortifying. At the SAG Awards a few weeks later, T.R. looked miserable. But after his appearance on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show, he seems to have found his footing and to be more comfortable in the spotlight as an out gay man. He gave such passionate speech Saturday that it seemed to me and others that an activist has been born!
aaaatr1.jpg

GLAAD Awards still only for mainstream media...

5-WINGS-Ugly-Betty.jpgIt was interesting to not only attend the GLAAD Awards Saturday night, but to also pop into several parties and panels at the three-day Q-MeCon - the 2nd Annual Queer Media & Entertainment Conference over the weekend. The GLAAD Awards are given to mainstream media [like best comedy series winner "Ugly Betty" pictured above) for positive portrayals and coverage of the LGBT community and do not have competitive categories for shows that are produced on such exclusively-gay media as MTV's Logo channel or the here! network or magazines like The Advocate or Out.
Gay media outlets, led my here! and Logo, want to be included in competitive categories and have become increasingly vocal about it. The two gay networks received a special award at last year's ceremony but this year, the network's performers and executives seemed to have stayed away from the event.
19-BANNER-Harris-Smulders.jpgI asked GLAAD President Neil Giuliano (pictured with Neil Patrick Harris and Cobie Smulders) about the policy Saturday night and asked him if things might be changed before next year's awards.
"I don't know yet," Neil said. "The GLAAD board of directors makes those decisions. The GLAAD organization actually did give awards to the gay media in the 90s and in 1999, after the gay media said, 'Who is GLAAD to be telling us which is good, better or best?' they stopped doing those. So now we have broadcast media saying we'd like to be included and the GLAAD board will probably look at that issue and talk about that issue. The challenge is that we don't lobby and don't try and influence the LGBT broadcast media outlets because that's their mission: they do fair, accurate and inclusive programming. That's what they're there for. We don't monitor them or work with them but we do certainly recognize them."
On the closing night reception of Q-MeCon, here! founder Paul Colichman gave a passionate speech about the role of gay media in society right now: "If we don't have our own media images, then we are all screwed....There has never been a more important time in history [for LGBT media] than right now, there's a little crack in the door. Are we going to trust GLAAD to do it? I don't think so. If we can't even acknowledge ourselves, how do we expect anyone else to?"

I'm sure we haven't heard the last of this!

GLAAD Awards...show highlights....

aaaaalec.jpgALEC MAPA: ROCK STAR: This guy, this brilliant guy, walks out after Martina Navratilova leaves the stage and introduces himself as Sandra Oh. Then he corrects himself: 'It's me, Alec Mapa, America's Gaysian sweetheart!" He wanted everyone to know that no, he is NOT Rex Lee: "I'm not on 'Entourage' all right? I know we all look alike but make a fricken effort!"
On his "Desperate Housewives co-star Eva Longoria: "She has more gay men working on her than George Michael in a public bathroom!" Then he adds to anyone who is offended: 'Don't boo me cuz you know you're going to tell that at the office on Monday." Mapa gave that audience a little insight into what it's like on the set of "Desperate Housewives": "It's like a circuit party with craft services! It's a REALLY gay set." Then he takes on the president: 'George Bush is going down faster than a fat kid on a corn dog!" "Don't you miss the days when presidents just screwed interns insteads of entire civilizations?"

aaaajake1.jpgJAKE'S REQUEST: There were those who got standing ovation then there are those the crowd simply went wild over. Jake Gyllenhaal fits into the latter category. The claps, the whistles, the screams. He was the evening's rock star. When the noise went on perhaps a little too long (he was, after all, there to present to his "The Good Girl" co-star Jennifer Aniston), the ever=charming Jake said to the crowd: "Settle down. Settle down. Settle down cowboys...[then there was a chorus of female shrieks so he added]...and cowgirls apparently."
Gyllenhaal, star of "Brokeback Mountain" then said: "People say actors are brave for taking on certain roles. I say no. What's truly brave is picking out what to wear in front of this crowd!"

aaaaglaadjen.jpgANISTON'S FRIENDS: She gave Gyllenhaal a very long and heartfelt hug then they did a little slowdance on stage. "This is quite a room," she said. "I don't know Jake, maybe we need to rethink things!" Aniston noted how just a few months ago on the same Kodak Theater stage on Oacar night, "Melissa Etheridge gets up on this stage and kisses and thanks her wife in front of 40 million people." "I've been lucky to have great friends; gay, straight, anywhere in between...you can leave THAT up to your own imagination!"
aaaajen.jpg

BEN'S REGRETS: Ben Affleck was introduced as "Academy Award winner Ben Affleck" when he strolled out to present the outstanding wide release movie award. He mentioned to the audience that the Oscar he won was for the screenplay he wrote with best friend Matrt Damon for "Good will Hunting." "It strikes me as unfortunate that we live in a time when it was easier for Matt and I to win an Oscar than it was for us to get married." Affleck then joked that it was probably for the best since it wouldn't have worked out anyway...

aaaaglaadmartina.jpgMARTINA THE COMIC: After an incredibly moving film recapping her playing career and activism followed by a thunderous standing ovationj, Martina Navratilova took to the stage and said: "That video! Those hairstyles! Sonjaya's got nothing on me! ...[But] at least I can play tennis!" Navratilova told the crowd that while her career as a tennis champion may be over [she retired last fall one month shy of her 50th birthday], "Being a champion for gay and lesbian rights is something I will never retire from until we do have full equality and that day will come." Martina said that when she came out in 1981, "It was pretty lonely" but things were better by the time she helped lead the 1993 March on Washington and when she things about where the LGBT equal rights movement is today, she said: "We have come a long, long way."

aaaaknight.jpgSTANDING OVATION SCORECARD: Coming out publicly can sometimes bring people to their feet...or not. When T.R. Knight opened the show, he walked out on stage to a heart-felt and sustained standing ovation. It was one of the evening's nicest moments. A short time later, Neil Patrick Harris took the stage, got warm applause, but no rear-ends left their seats. He noticed: "Oh sure, you stand for T.R." The crowd roared. When John Amaechi strolled out, the audience sprung to its feet again. Lance Bass follows him a bit later to present to Martina, audience stays glued to its seat.

Red Carpet encounters at the GLAAD Awards...

aaaabass.jpg
aaaaglaaadlance.jpgA CLOSE CALL: So Lance Bass is doing a bunch of red carpet interviews tonight before heading into the Kodak Theater at the GLAAD Awards where he presented Martina Navratilova with a special award.
He's locked into a long interview with some cable outlet when, several yards away, flashbulbs start going off. It's Bass' ex-boyfriend, Reichen Lemkuhl and his new boyfriend, Ryan Berry. Lance may not have been aware that they were there initially because he stayed planted doing this endless interview as Reichen and boyfriend inch closer and closer to him. Bass never looks in his direction. I'm standing with a cameraman from Fox 11 and we're just waiting for the moment. It never came. Bass' publicist, who had earlier promised us an interview, whisked him away saying, "He'll be back."
Fox 11 dude looks at me and says: "No way he's coming back."
And he didn't.

aaaaglaadneil.jpgNEIL GLAAD TO BE THERE: "How I Met Your Mother Star" Neil Patrick Harris seemed very at ease as he did interviews on the red carpet. When he got to me he said: "It's enjoyable. This is my first GLAAD Awards and everybody's really nice and it's representing good positivity so I'm all for that."I asked him if being out publicly has changed his life much. "Oh, not at all. But I was never really skulking around so it's all kind of interesting."
I told Neil that there was a lot of interest in how he would be when he subbed for Regis Philbin for two days last month because it was the first time he would be appearing on a show as himself since he publicly acknowledged his sexuality last fall. "I looooooooved it," he said of the two-day gig. "I've been doing talk shows since I was 14 years old, I'm pretty well-versed with that sort of format. It was fun to be on the other side of the couch and be asking the questions, it's a different kind of style. I'd love to host a show or host a game show, that's right up my alley. I'd love to be Ed Sullivan someday."

024_1A.JPGMEETING KEVIN: Knock me over with a feather. I met Mathew Rhys (Don't we look cute together? Take THAT Scotty!). When he started talking to me, I had to stop and laugh. I said, "I've never heard you talk with the accent! I've never heard your real voice." The Welsh actor, who does a superb American accent as Kevin, cracked up. We collected ourselves and I asked him what he thinks of all the attention and affection that has been aimed toward his character of Kevin: "I'm extremelyhappy about that and, you know, an enormous part of that is the writing. I'm so lucky. They bring the character to the table and I'm just lucky enough to day the words. It's very intelligent and sensitive and mature writing."
Rhys told me that his newest relationship on the show, which is with the brother of Rob Lowe's character, "gets off to a rocky start at the moment so [Kevin] is hoping there's brighter days ahead for them."
He knows that a lot of people are still mourning his break-up with Scotty (Luke MacFarlane). "Scotty. Scotty. Scotty. He is an adorable character but Kevin has to mature and recognize a winner when he has one in his hands."
020_5A.JPGMathew walked the red carpet with co-stars Ron Rifkin and Patricia Wettig and the three of them were having a ball. That must be a fun set. i asked Ron hos thoughts on Matthew/Kevin: 'I love him. The fact that I love hom has nothing to do with the fact that he's gay [Matthew is straight, the character of Kevin is Gay]. Don't I love you?" Rifkin said to Rhys before giving him a kiss on the lips. It was like he was his real uncle.
Whettig, who won three Emmy Awards when she was on "thirtysomething," is also having a greattime on the show: "It's such a great ensemble with all these great people who like to come to work and do these great scenes. It's great. Fantastic."
So, I ask, are her and Sally Field's character of Nora or Rachel Griffith's character of Sarah ever gonna have a big, knock-out, drag-out catfight like Alexis and Krystal did on "Dynasty"?
Wetting: "Funny you should mention that. I don't think I can tell but something is coming up right in that vein. You'll see. I can't tell you what it is!"
Then a serious question for Mr. Rhys: who is a better kisser? Scotty or Chad (Jason Lewis)?
"It's like choosing between a Porche and a Mercedes. But Jason Lewis has very soft lips."

aaaaglaadjason.jpgKEVIN'S EX SPEAKS: Jason Lewis, whose character of Chad dumped Kevin in last Sunday's episode, was being whisked by but I called out to him and he came over for one question. "It better be a good one though," he kidded. I asked what he thought of his story arc as a closeted soap star who in the end, decides to come out: "I think the writing on it was fantastic because, although it was about a character coming out, I think it was universal in that it was about anybody who doesn't understand themselves and kind of destruction they do to their lives."

KEVIN'S BROTHER SPEAKS: Gabbed with Dave Annable, the adorable actor who plays Just9n Walker on "Brothers & Sisters." He's proud of his character's journey from self-destructive addict to recovering, productive member of society. "Our show is portraying a gay character just like everybody else. He's got real relationship issues, rea problems and flaws and great atrributes."

KEVIN IS NEIL'S FAVE: I asked GLAAD President Neil Guiliano who his favorite gay character on television is. His answer revealed excellent taste: "My favorite is Kevin on 'Brothers & Sisters.' I think [Matthew Rhys] has done a great job, it's just a wonderful portrayal. He's so real and authentic."
Does he want Kevin to get back with Scotty? "Uh, noooo. Chad's good but there could be someone else good coming down the road too."

aaaaculture.jpgSEEING THE BOYS: Since I had written a cover story for "Frontiers" about them and their movie "Boy Culture," it was a nice little reunion with Derrick Magyar, Darryl Stephens and Jonathon Trent and a real treat to mee the film's director Q. Allan Brocka! (Brocka blogged about the evening and it's terrific). I asked them what it's been like to be on all these magazines in connection with their well-received film. "It's been incredible," Magyar said. "We're really proud of the film and to be recognized. It's amazing. i kind of felt like we had made a really kind of special film. I didn't really know what was going to happen with it - I try not to think about those things - but I hoped for the best."
Said Trent: "I'm a Gemini so i'm mixed. Part of me is really shy about [the attention], ashamed of it in a way. Then the other side is a narcisist and an egomaniac who wants more and more and more. So there's a real duality there. But you know I'm really happy for the attention. I hope that any attention that I can get will help the film.
Darryl Stephens has been on plenty of magazine covers as the star of "Noah's Arc" but he is excited to be playing a character in "Boy Culture" so different from his television alter-ego. "People kind of assume that I am the character I'm playing on television so it's nice to be able to show them that I'm an actor playing characters, I can do other things. We're all very proud of the film."

HELLO UP THERE: It was great to see John Amaechi who remembered our lunch from a few months back. I asked him how life has been for him since: "It's still craxy, but good. I'm getting used to it. I'm certainly fitting into this and I'm enjoying it. It's been a blast, it really has."

aaaaloni.jpgLONI LOVEFEST: Readers of "Out In Hollywood" already know that I loved the series "NoTORIous" mostly because of Loni Anderson's hilarious portrayal of Tori Spelling's self-absorbed mom on the show. When I saw this still-gorgeous actress, I had to tell her how hard she made me laugh.
"It was so much fun! Tori was so darling and she was so open and I got to be whatever I wanted." I asked Loni, star of the classic "WKRP in Cincinatti," what we will seeing her in next: 'Hopefully something will come along. I seem to do a series every couple of years."

LIFE'S A BEACHES: Garry Marshall may be best known for creating "Happy Days" and "LaVerne & Shirley" but what I had forgotten is that he directed the gay fave "Beaches" starring Bette Midler who he is planning to make another film with. I asked Garry if he was aware of how much the gays love that 1988 movie which also starred Barbara Hershey. "Well, it's a heartfelt movie and when Bette sings 'Wind Beneath My Wings,' I think everybody cries. It played across the board but you know what they said: 'If you cried in 'Beaches,' then you could be gay.' It' still going strong [on DVD]. Bette still talks about it, still sings the song."

aaaakoz1.jpgKOZ I SAID SO: There's Dave Koz! Looking so dapper. It was so good to see him and we joked about how my friend, Trevor Daley, and I were heading up the Dave Koz fan club. "I've been here many times but I've never presented so this is a very special night for me," said Dave who added that since he came out publicly a few years ago, "Everything got better."

My night at "The Billies" [Updated]

aaaaking.jpg
After covering the Oscars, Grammys, Emmys etc., you think you pretty much have had your award show highs for the year. But I ended up having mine last night at The Billies! Who knew?
aaabillie.jpgWhat an incredible evening put on by the Women's Sports Foundation and it was very exciting to be around all these sports legends. It was a privledge I will never forget. Since I was seated in the back, I was able to stand and dance to Elton John's 10-song set with my new friend Kennette Coffman. We boogied to "Bennie and the Jets," "Tiny Dances," "Rocket Man," "Philadelphia Freedom" and others. Since Elton wrote "Philadelphia Freedom" for Billie Jean, his close friend of more than three decades, it was particularly touching when during the song, they briefly showed a split-screen of him singing and Billie Jean watching from the audience.
aaaaelton3.jpg"She's an amazing woman," Elton said of BJK. "She has the same energy and ambition that she had when she first came to England [to play Wimbledon in 1962] as Billie Jean Moffit. I really admire that in a person....She's one of the most motivational people I've ever met, one of the truest and loyalist people I've ever met."
aaaabillieszz.jpgAs Elton sang, assorted sports legends would congregate in back of us. Cheryl Miller, Nancy Lieberman and Ann Meyers-Drysdale were huddling and giggling a few feet away from me after they presented an award, swimmer Diana Nyad and Olympic gymnast Dominique Dawes stopped by to gab with my seatmate Tuti B. Scott, a member of the foundation's staff. During "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me," 1994 Wimbldeon Champion Conchita Martinez walked by and I gave her a thumbs up.
aaaabaseball1.jpgI was seated at the table next to Dorothy Herrill-Doyle (pictured, right) who played on the baseball league that inspired the movie "A League of Their Own." Dorothy played for the Rockford Peaches from 1944-50 and 1952. She said to me, "What a wonderful occasion" and talked about how honored she felt to be a part of the event's parade of champions who took the stage.
The parade included Billie Jean King, Donna de Varona, Lisa Leslie, Lyndsay Davenport, Julie Foudy, Domenique Dawes, Temeka Johnson, Tracy Austin, Amanda Freed, Mary Osbourne, Ann Meyers-Drysdale, Rosie Casals and Susan Enquist, among many others others.
Billie Jean was announced last and she jogged out with the energy of a teenager (she's 63!). She was, as always, in the moment.
"My dream since I was 12 years old is that boys and girls have equal opportunity and we don't," King said to the crowd. "That's why we started the Women's Sports Foundation and that's why we continue today."
The Billies are hosted by the Women's Sports Foundation and recognize media excellence in women's sports and physical activity while simultaneously raising funds. The foundation was founded in 1974 by King and DeVarona was its first president.
aaaadeion1.jpgThe evening was star-studded. Geena Davis, star of "A League of Their Own" charmed the crowd and paid tribute to King because "she bucked centuries of accepted practice" in her fight for equality in sports and society. Other presenters included John Amaechi, Jimmy Connors, Elisabeth Shue, Marilee Matlin, Deion Sanders, Rodney Peete, Davenport, Cheryl Miller and Nancy Leiberman.
But Sharon Stone pretty much stole the show by hosting the live auction.
"I want your money," Stone said, point-blank. "And you're here because you want to give it to me."
She flirted and seduced audience members into spending $300,000 on trips to Wimbledon and the U.S. Open with all kinds of perks. The Wimbledon trip included an invite to Elton's annual ball at his estate and at the U.S. Open, the highest bidder will watch the semis and finals from Billie's Jean's stadium suite!
aaaastone2.jpg"This is the most fantastic evening," Stone told the audience before the auction. "To see all these women athletes come out is just so thrilling...Billie Jean is an inspiration and has changed the way that we can live with the courage and inspiration by which she has lived."
The winners of Billies in each categorywere: Breakthrough and Innovation * "MADE" MTV Networks, series of episodes, Francis Lyons and Robert Yacyshyn 2. Entertainment * "The Heart of the Game" Documentary by Ward Serrill 3. Journalism * "Lady Caliphs" John Fish and John Barr 4. Influential Personality * Ross Greenburg, HBO Sports President.

Ben Affleck added to presenters list at GLAAD Awards...

aaaaffleck.jpgBen Affleck has had his critics over the years, but I'm not one of them. I think he's talented, smart, funny and handsome. I may be ridiculed for this, but I have seen plenty of movies far worse than "Gigli." He's rebounded with "Hollywoodland" and I wish him nothing but success.
So, why am I singing Affleck's praises?
I just read on Planet Gossip that Ben will be a presenter at Saturday's Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards. Affleck's rep told Marc Malkin that Ben will present Outstanding Film—Wide Release. Nominees are Little Miss Sunshine, The Night Listener, Running with Scissors, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and V for Vendetta.

I'm off to see Elton and Billie Jean!!!

aaabillie-elton.jpg
How cool is this? I'm heading home to slip into my tuxedo to attend tonight's award show The Billies at the Beverly Hilton. It's an award show, named after Billie Jean King, where the Women's Sports Foundation (a group Billie Jean founded in the early 70s) recognizes media for their excellence in the positive portrayal of women's sports. In addition the BJK, her good pal Elton John is going to perform. Others expected to attend are Maria Shriver, Sharon Stone and Geena Davis.
Look for my full report tomorrow!

Diane Keaton honored by Film Society of Lincoln Center...

aaakeaton1.jpg
I'll always have a soft spot for Diane Keaton, who was honored Monday in New York by the Film Society of Lincoln Center at its 2007 gala tribute. Sarah Jessica Parker, who co-starrred with Keaton in "The Family Stone" a fewyears back, was present along with Lisa Kudrow (Keaton directed and co-starred with her in 1997's "Hanging Up") and the great Candice Bergen.
When I switched over from covering hard news to entertainment, one of my first magazine freelance assignments was a profile of Miss Keaton. We met for tea at the Beverly Hills Hotel's famed Polo Lounge and gabbed for an hour. I was nervous beforehand but once she arrived, it all disappeared as I asked her about her all about her movies and the three most famous loves of her life: Woody Allen, Warren Beatty and Al Pacino. She even did the line in "Baby Boom" for me that I love so much: "I used to be cute!"
What I really loved about Diane Keaton was her terrific energy which has not seemed to lessen even as she has reached 60. She's still in demand too with the comedy "Mama's Boy" out this summer and the comedy "Because I Said So..." having a solid theatrical run earlier this year.
aaakeaton.jpgKeaton has been a movie star since the early 70s when she made a splash with comic roles in such Woody Allen movies as "Play It Again Sam" and "Love and Death" as well as dramatic roles in "Godfather" and "Godfather II." Then was the Academy Award in 1978 for "Annie Hall" (the same year she starred in "Looking for Mr. Goodbar") and nominations i each decade since: in 1982 for "Reds," in 1996 for "Marvin's Room" and in 2002 for "As Good As It Gets." She has deftly mixed comedies ("Baby Boom," Manhattan Murder Mystery," "First Wives Club" and "Father of the Bride") with dramas ("Shoot the Moon," "Mrs. Soffel," and "Interiors."
Keaton likes to work and even in a so-so film, she elevates things and you are never bored when she is on-screen.

Lucy's kids to accept TV Land Award honor...

Lucille_Ball_320x240.jpgOh, how I love Lucy. So how cool is it that at next Saturday's TV Land Awards, "The Legacy of Laughter Award" will be given to the late Lucille Ball? Her two children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr. will be on hand in Santa Monica to accept the award which will be presented by Carol Burnett, a close family friend.
While "I Love Lucy" is the show that is the classic that lives on and on (thank God!), Miss Ball followed it up with two long-running sitcoms: "The Lucy Show" which ran 1962-68 then "Here's Lucy" which ran from 1968-74. The reason she revamped the show in 1968 and changed her character from Lucy Carmichael to Lucy Carter was simple: she wanted to give the Arnaz children their start in show business.
lucy-dvd.jpgDesi Jr. was a teen idol right off the bat as Craig Carmichael and he was also in a popular band with one of Dean Martin's son (I think it was called Billy, Dino and Desi). He went on to star in various films like "Red Sky at Morning," "Joyride," and "Mr. and Mrs. Bo Jo Jones" and played his father, Desi Arnaz Sr., in the film "The Mambo Kings." He was a gossip magazine fave due to his high-profile romances with Oscar-winners Patty Duke and Liza Minnelli.
luciedpar.jpgBut Desi Jr. has not been as consistently committed to his show business career as his big sister who stayed with her mother's sitcom all six seasons then went on to star on Broadway in "They're Playing Our Song," "Lost n Yonkers," and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" and on London's West End" in "Witches of Eastwick." Lucie also had her own sitcom "The Lucie Arnaz Show" for a season in the mid-80s and co-starred in the films "The Jazz Singer" and "Billy Jack Goes to Washington." She has always worked and clearly inherited her mom's hard-work ethic.
Boith Lucie and Desi Jr. have embraced their parent's legacy and, I think, would have made them proud.

GLAAD Media Awards in LA.: What a line-up!!!

aaalance.jpgaaaNPH.jpg
aaaTR.jpgThe GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles will be held on Saturday, April 14 and I'm really eager to attend even if it means I will have to miss the TVLand Awards which are being held on the same night. Don't these kudofests talk to each other? I missed the Writer's Guild Awards for the first time in five years because the Grammy's were on the same night.
But enough about me.
Shared with you yesterday that Jennifer Aniston would be receiving the Vanguard Award at the ceremony and GLAAD has released other show details including that T.R. Knight, the "Grey's Anatomy" co-star who came out publicly last fall, will open the show to be held once again at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
Martina-Navratilova.jpgSome people are doing a little head-scratching over Aniston getting the Vanguard but maybe there is a lot we don't yet know. But someone we do know a lot about and who deserves every award there is for courage and accomplishment is tennis Legend Martina Navratilova. Martina will be presented with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award by former NSYNC band member Lance Bass who, like Knight, came out publicly last year under a glare of publicity. In addition to Martina, the other prominent out athlete to appear will be former NBA player John Amaechi.
Among the guests scheduled to attend are Neil Patrick Harris, the "How i Met Your Mother" star who also came out publicly last fall to put an end to speculation and pressure from some bloggers. And then there is the fabulous Sarah Paulson of "Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip" who basically came out when she kissed her girlfriend, actress Cherry Jones, on national television after Jones won the Tony Award fior "Doubt."
matthew_rhys_tca.jpgAnd that's just the gay people. Also on the program will be the wonderful Judith Light, "Ugly Betty" star America Ferrera, Katherine Heigl of "Grey's Anatomy" and...(I can hardly stand it!) Matthew Rhys who plays Kevin Walker on "Brothers & Sisters." Rachel Griffiths who plays his sister Sarah and Jason Lewis, who plays his lover Chad, are also on the bill. But I'm most excited to see Matthew and hopefully have a bit of a chat with him on the red carpet!
For the third consecutive year, the GLAAD Media Awards will be televised on Logo, MTV Networks' cable channel for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender viewers and their allies. The Logo airdate forthe GLAAD Media Awards is April 21, 2007.

Jennifer Aniston to receive GLAAD's Vanguard Award...

Jennifer-Aniston-Biography.jpg
Planet Gossip's Marc Malkin reports that Jennifer Aniston has been tapped to receive the Vanguard Award at this year's Los Angeles GLAAD Media Awards on Apr. 14. The award honors a member of the entertainment world who has been significant in promoting gay rights. Past recipients include Cher, Eric McCormack, Antonio Banderas, Liza Minnelli and Charlize Theron.
"She never expected this," Aniston's tells Malkin. "But she's very honored and very happy about it."
I'm not sure what Aniston has done to promote gay rights but once I find out, i will be happy to share it with you. But Malkin did compile a list of his favorite gay moments in Aniston's career:

* In 1998, Aniston costarred in the movie The Object of My Affection as a straight woman who attempts to raise her child with her gay male roommate, played by Paul Rudd.
* Aniston and Winona Ryder enjoyed a girl-on-girl kiss in an episode during the seventh season of Friends, in which Ryder played a former sorority sister who had a longtime crush on Rachel.
* Not only did Aniston appear in Melissa Etheridge's video for the single, "I Want to Be in Love," the out lesbian rocker performed at Aniston's wedding to Brad Pitt.
* She was the first guest on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show.
* Most recently, she had a little kiss (nowhere near the wild makeout that some reports claimed would happen) with Courteney Cox on Dirt, in which Aniston played a rival editor to Cox's Lucy Spiller.

This funny incident is reported in today's New York Magazine Daily Intelligencer column: Cynthia Nixon showed up at last night's GLAAD Media Awards as an out-and-proud lesbian — a big step, given her involuntary outing by gossip columns a few years back — but her showy $50,000 donation to the LGBT cause, announced by GLAAD president Neil Giuliano in front of a capacity crowd at the Marriot Marquis, came as an even bigger surprise. Particularly, as it turns out, to Nixon herself. "I don't know if it was a joke or a case of mistaken identity," she said when we bumped into her later. "I donated $1,000." (This morning we were greeted with a voice message from a GLAAD flack setting the record straight, as it were.)
I'm just glad Nixon didn't pass out or something. After all, she's not getting those "Sex and the City" paychecks anymore and even though she won a Tony Award last year, the theater doesn't pay nearly as good as HBO!

Patti LaBelle to Jennifer Hudson: "I thought you were a bitch!"

aaapatti.jpg
Patti LeBelle has always been a down-to-earth diva and never afraid to have some fun. So when Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson presented LaBelle with a GLAAD Media Award last night in New York, "I didn't know you were this nice," LaBelle told Hudson. "I thought you were a bitch," she joked, noting that she had never met Hudson before their appearance.
There's a nice, detailed account of the first meeting between these two divas from different generations who both have pipes like few others on Keithboykin.com.
aaapatti2.jpgThe "Dreamgirls" star appeared on stage at the very end of the show to present Patti LaBelle with a special achievement award. But the introduction turned into a 15-minute lovefest between Hudson, LaBelle and the audience. And for those who had any doubt about where Jennifer Hudson or Patti LaBelle stood on gay issues, they both made it very clear. They fully support the rights of gays and lesbians, including the right to marry.
What started out as a simple introduction of LaBelle turned into a major production as Oscar-winner Hudson was treated to a standing ovation by the crowd, which included Patti LaBelle herself. Before Hudson could finish her introduction, LaBelle was on her feet again, standing at a front row table as Hudson struggled to read her script from the teleprompter at the back of the room.
Patti walked to the stage and knelt at the foot of the stage for a moment, then climbed the stage and knelt again in front of Hudson, who seemed visibly shocked by the gesture of humility from the R&B diva. LaBelle spent most of her acceptance speech praising Hudson and comparing Hudson to herself. After repeated calls from the audience for the two women to sing, Patti broke out in an a cappella version of "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen," and Hudson joined in.

Scenes from the NAACP Image Awards ...

adane.jpgachamber.jpg
Found some terrific pictures on the JustJared web site from Friday night's NAACP Awards that I wanted to share that include cast members of "Grey's Anatomy" OTHER than Isaiah Washington as well as cast members of "Ugly Betty." The shows took the outstanding drama and outstanding comedy awards, respectively. Vanessa Williams won best supporting actress in a comedy.
abetty.jpgabetty2.jpg

Why a standing ovation for Isaiah?

awash2.jpgI admit, I was surprised and dismayed to watch Isaiah Washington receive a standing ovation at the NAACP Awards Friday night after he won the prize for best actor in a drama for "Grey's Anatomy" which won foiur awards overall. What was lingering in my mind was WHY? Why give him a standing O? For graduating from gayhab? For almost losing his job for spouting a gay slur at hs co-star?
Anyway, Michael Jensen of AfterElton.com also was troubled by this and writes in part:
"I think it’s justifiable to separate out the man’s behavior from his acting skills and to acknowledge those, but what troubles me is that much of the crowd gave him a standing ovation when he accepted the award. Um, what for exactly? Is his Grey’s Anatomy role particularly ground-breaking? Did he have a storyline that was especially significant to African-Americans? If so, I sure haven’t heard that. Or was the crowd responding to something else perhaps?
Like maybe they think Isaiah got treated unfairly for use of the “F” word perhaps? That gay people who felt he got off to easy for tossing about the slur needed to be sent a message to just shut up and get over it? Nice message to send. But, hey, it’s not like homophobia is anymore prevalent in the African-American community or anything.
Imagine the reaction if Michael Richards won a comedy award and received a standing ovation or Mel Gibson won an award from a Catholic group and received the same. How would that not be saying something very ugly to African-Americans or the Jewish community?"

An Oscar fashion recap worth reading...

anic.jpgI love Joan Rivers but I'm not so sure her and Missy are really fashion "experts." And that Cojo dude, as ridiculous as he looks at these affairs, he really should NOT be throwing stones, mmmmkay? Cojo named Nicole Kidman as his "worst dressed" which pretty much destroys his credibility. She was stunning. Give worst dressed to Sally Kirkland for goodness sakes!
Anyway, I found an Oscar fashion recap by Daniel Vosovic, an alum of fashion runway. Check out his BLOG and as an appetizer, I take this opportunity to post his thoughts of the man who I already pegged as best dressed: Leonardo DiCaprio.
aleo1.jpg Writes Daniel: "He, to me, is our generation's “Old Hollywood” in the making. The peak lapel of his Giorgio Armani tux is just right for his size; the dimple in his tie is perfect, and any man under 50 that can pull off slicked back hair so effortlessly without looking like a greaser from The Outsiders is a hottie in my book."

Another five things you didn't know about the Oscars...

E! Online's Planet Gossip columnist Marc Malkin talked to writer Bruce Vilanch and has revealed another the top five things we didn't know about this year's Academy Awards:
ellen_degeners.jpg
5. The Bald Truth About Britney: Ellen DeGeneres, according to Vilanch, wasn't the kind of host to joke about Britney Spears' recent troubles. "I think for a different host, certainly!" Vilanch says. "I think Whoopi [Goldberg] or Billy [Crystal] would do some Britney reference, but that's just not Ellen's style. And there was nobody else who was going to pick up those cudgels and do a Britney joke. Other than the fact that Jack Nicholson looked like her, there was no other point of reference."

4. Sundays at Ellen's: There were 16 writers for the telecast. "On Sunday nights we'd go up to Ellen's house and we'd talk Oscar," Vilanch says. "She had 10 and we had 6 who were working on the rest of the show. And then what happens is you get to the Kodak and it gets collaborative. I've done the show for 16 years. The first time there were two of us writing, but there was no host that year! That was the Snow White year!"

gore_dicaprio.jpg
3. A Carbon-Neutral Party: There was a good reason Al Gore and Leonardo DiCaprio didn't use the term carbon neutral when they announced the Oscars were going green. "When they were explaining it to me, I said, 'I don't know how I can possibly translate any of this into something on a television show like this that won't make everyone [excuse themselves] to go pop a beer,' " Vilanch says. "Can we just find some other way to express this than saying carbon neutral? It sounds like something in a salad dressing."

2. Monkey Business: When Robert Downey Jr. and  Naomi Watts presented Best Visual Effects, Downey cracked wise about his own turbulent past, saying: "Visual effects: They enable us to see aliens, experience other universes, move in slow-motion, or watch spiders climbing high above the city landscape...For me, just a typical weeknight in the mid-'90s." Vilanch says originally they had intended a quip about Watts working with a visual effect like King Kong. "Robert was going to say, 'I know what you mean, because I've had a monkey on my back,' " Vilanch says. "But then we worked it down to what actually was a big laugh for him."

mirren_hanks.jpg
1. (Tie) Thanks, but No Hanks: Tom Hanks (pictured presenting w/Helen Mirren) has declined offers to host the Oscars. "I think Tom would be great," Vilanch says. "He'd be fabulous, but I know he's turned it down a couple of times." George Clooney is another hopeful. "I think they felt around about George," Vilanch says, "but he wasn't interested."

1 . (Tie) Oscar Dave, Dave Oscar: Vilanch says he thinks DeGeneres and last year's host, Jon Stewart, will be asked to return, but more surprisingly, he says Academy honchos wouldn't mind another turn from the infamously panned David Letterman. "They've asked Dave back," Vilanch says. "At one point, he said he wanted to do it again, but then he said he didn't. It's a hard gig, and it's a very short list of people who can do it. If you do a good job, they go, Nice job, and nothing changes. But if you don't do a good job, it will haunt you forever."

Isaiah Washington wins NAACP Award...

25089009.jpg
While he certainly won't be accepting any kudos at this year's GLAAD Awards, Isaiah Washington's calling co-star T.R. Knight a "faggot" on set then denying it publicly did not stand in the way of his taking home the best actor in a drama series NAACP Image Award Friday night. Washington (pictured above at last year's Emmys) seemed far more subdued than the smiling confident man he had been at this year's Golden Globes and People's Choice Awards. He was given a standing ovation and told the audience he felt "extraordinarily privledged" to win the award then started rattling off a looong list of names before the orchestra began to play him off. I was listening to hear if he had anything profound to say, like maybe what he learned in gayhab or about bigortry but no, it was just list reading before he ended with "I'm humbled and honored to be honored by the NAACP."
"Grey's Anatomy" took outstanding drama hours with SAG winner Chandra Wilson named best supporting actress while "Ugly Betty" was named best comedy with Vanessa Williams winning supporting actress.

image0303_03-03-2007_6V9V1F.jpg
CATG12703030150_sp.jpegAnd no surprise here: Oscar winners Jennifer Hudson ("Dreamgirls") and Forest Whitaker ("Last King of Scotland") took home the best supporting actress and best actor prizes and winning best supporting actor was Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou for "Blood Diamond."
The awards were aired live for the first time...

I was also real happy to see Tracey Ellis Ross win the Image award for best actress in a comedy series for "Girlfriends." She looked beautiful in a black gown and said of her seven years on the sitcom: "I could not think of a better job and a better place to grow up and become a woman." It can't be easy to emerge from the shadow of a mother whose name is Diana Ross but Tracey has. And, she loves her mom a lot too: "I'm wearing my mommy's dress!" she said before leaving the stage.
It was cute.

Bruce Vilanch shares Oscar show secrets....

abruce2.jpgI'm getting hooked on Marc Malkin's Planet Gossip blog on E! Online. Marc talked to the terrific Bruce Vilanch who was one of the writers on the Oscar show this year and got some juicy, behind-the-scenes tidbits.
Here is the first half of "10 Things You Don't Know about the Oscars." I'll post the second five things as soon as I see 'em on Planet Gossip:

AELLEN3.jpg10. Fashion Emergency
DeGeneres nixed Vilanch's idea to open the show in an evening gown. "I wanted her to come up from under the stage, posed in this Balenciaga creation all the way up to her neck, and it's just gorgeous," Vilanch says. "And then she moves her hand and...unhooks it and steps out of it—it's actually a sculpture. She's not really in a dress at all. She's in a tuxedo. But she didn't want to do a sneaky entrance. Steve Martin is her role model so she just wanted to be simple and elegant."

adiana_ross_150c.jpg9. Supreme Surprise Diana Ross was invited to take part in the Dreamgirls medley. "But she didn't want to be on the show at all," Vilanch says. "I think she wanted to avoid a show that celebrated Dreamgirls."

adirectors.jpg8. Three Amigos
Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas didn't rehearse their schtick for Best Director until a half hour before going on stage. "We went over it in the greenroom," Vilanch says. "It was wonderful watching them direct each other."

7. The V Word
There was one word that got censored prior to the broadcast. Any guesses? It begins with a V, if that helps. "You couldn't say Volkswagen," Vilanch says. "So, any one of those Little Miss Sunshine references, you had to say minivan. Volkswagen probably wasn't a sponsor, and some other minivan was. I said, 'How about VW?' They said that couldn't go either!"

6. Girls Gone Wild
Vilanch had hoped to get some young—albeit controversial—starlets on the show. When producer Laura Ziskin first proposed having best costumes showcased on real-life models, Vilanch suggested using Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and Tara Reid. "I said, 'Let's get all these girls—the ones you find throwing up in the gutter at Hyde and have them wear these outfits," Vilanch says. "They thought that was cheap. Then I thought maybe you have those four and then Jane Russell. Some fabulous sexpot from the old days who comes out as The Queen."

A prize Portia...

aportia.jpg
I can't believe this oversight on my part: I have not posted ANY pictures of the beautiful Portia de Rossi from Oscar night. She was mighty proud of girlfriend Ellen DeGeneres who was a wonderful hostess. Seen with Ellen and Portia is the gorgeous Jamie Foxx...

Oscar party moments w/Elton and others...

1 2.jpgA few random snaps I wanted to share of Elton John and husband David Furnish at Elton's annual Oscar party which continues to raise millions for his AIDS foundation; Keifer Sutherland at Elton's party looking absolutely HOT, and Tom Cruise with Katie Holmes. Tom seems more humble these days doesn't he? I don't mean it snarky. He's not smiling so crazy big. I like it. I've always liked him as an actor and thought he was the best star around...until things just got too weird a few years back. I like how he's not hiding out, but keeping his head low a little more and focusing on moviemaking...

LGBT filmgoers polled: "Little Miss Sunshine" for best pic!

135319__little_miss_sunshin.jpgThe Academy might have chosen "The Departed" as best picture last night, but "Little Miss Sunshine" was the prefered winner, according to the results of Logo's annual online Queer Year in Film poll. LGBT filmgoers also differed from the Academy voters in choosing Eddie Murphy for best supporting actor. He was upset by Alan Arkin who won for "Sunshine."
022607OscarWinners2_200 2.jpgPoll participants agreed with Academy voters on the winners for Best Director (Martin Scorsese), Lead Actor (Forest Whitaker), Lead Actress (Helen Mirren) and Supporting Actress (Jennifer Hudson).
The poll had been online since mid-February and was released Monday morning. OK, so big deal, right? Well, here's the fun part: Logo also quizzed LGBT filmgoers about the entire year of 2006 in movies and here are their very wise choices:

meryl_streep_in_the_devil_w.jpg* Favorite Comedy – The Devil Wears Prada
* Favorite Action Movie – Casino Royale
* Favorite Serious Drama – Children of Men
* Favorite Scary Movie/Thriller – Saw III
* Sexiest Movie – Shortbus
* Best Gay Indie Film – Adam & Steve
* Best Socially Aware Documentary – An Inconvenient Truth
* Favorite Animated Animal Movie – Happy Feet
* Favorite Guilty Pleasure – Another Gay Movie
* Favorite Gay Filmmaker – Bill Condon (Dreamgirls)

bond_bathers_wideweb__470x3.jpg
* Sexiest Male Movie Star – Daniel Craig (Casino Royale)
* Sexiest Female Movie Star – Michelle Rodriguez (Bloodrayne)
* Favorite Gay Movie Couple – Rachel & Luce (Imagine Me & You)
* Least Favorite Gay Movie Character – Sharon Stone’s bi killer, Basic Instinct 2
* What was the biggest Oscar snub this year? Dreamgirls, not nominated for Best Picture
* Fiercest Female Character – Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), The Devil Wears Prada
* Best Kiss – Borat and his friend’s rear end
* Character Most Likely to Inspire Drag Queens – Any of the women from Dreamgirls
* Most Lesbianish Non-Lesbian Film  - The Descent
* Biggest Disappointment – The DaVinci Code
* Best Action Movie with a Coincidentally Gay Storyline – V for Vendetta
* Character You Most Want to Get Drinks With – James Bond (Daniel Craig)
* Film Most Looking Forward to in 2007 – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

oscar4.jpgGee, drinks with Daniel Craig? Sounds great! Oh look! Anderson Cooper (pictured w/Craig at the Vanity Fair party last night) already got to!. What does Anderson have that I don't have? Oh, that million dollar salary, that wonderful gray hair, those piercing blue eyes, that incredible camera presence...uh, OK, I'm really depressed now. I didn't even SEE Daniel Craig on the red carpet last night, he must've been one of the later arrivals. Maybe next year....

Oscars 2007: Greg's backstage recap...

15 2.jpg022607OscarWinners2_200.jpg
Sorry for the delay in getting this posted. I went to the doctor who informed me I have a sinus infection, not the flu. No wonder I wasn't getting any better! So, let me reflect on Oscar evening backstage. I sipped hot tea all night and hoped that Richard Roeper, sitting right next to me, wouldn't notice that I was a sicko. I must say, he was really a nice guy and I enjoyed chatting with him between awards. Richard was multi-tasking: co-hosting ABC7 pre-show and post-show, writing for the Chicago Sun Times AND for the Ebert & Roeper site. Gee, all I had to do was try and not cough up a phlegm ball up on anyone. Piece a cake.
28112365.jpgFunny thing: People kept calling me! Friends. A buddy Scott calls and says, "Hey, we're on the road. Do you know what radio station is playing the Oscars?" I whispered: "DUDE, I'm BACKSTAGE right now, I can't talk!" (For some reason I still call my straight college friends DUDE). Then my friend Evan texts me to tell me he grew up with one of the winners and to ask him something but I don't read the text until the guy was already out of the interview room.
Anyway, both Richard Roeper and I lament that fact that our predictions of major categories will not be perfect since we both picked Eddie Murphy to win. Richard and I are likethis now. I wouldn't be surprised if we went out and grabbed a few beers after this is over....
I'm sitting across from Stacy Jenel Smith, who does Marilyn Beck's column with her. Just before the show starts, I tell Stacy about how 3 or 4 years ago, I was seated next to Beck at a screening of "The Four Feathers" on the lot of Paramount Pictures and midway through...I FELL ASLEEP! (I wasn't reviewing it!) So Stacy calls Marilyn up and asks her if she remembers. She does and puts her on the phone with me! We had a good laugh. I'm mortified, wondering what Richard thinks (kidding, he didn't seem to care).
Hudson1.jpgSo when Jennifer Hudson wins, it takes another hour or more before she arrives backstage because she had to sing with Beyonce and they were knockouts! When Jennifer did arrive, I stood to ask her a question and thought I'd remind her of how we sat together at the Oscar luncheon. She kinda looked at me blankly like, "Don't know ya." I guess I could have said: "You know, we chit chatted through the meal when you weren't texting your sister, I passed you the butter, I told you the quote on your T-shirt (an Academy gift) was from "Annie Hall" when you looked at it blankly, and told you that Mark's last name was Wahlberg. Remember me NOW?"
But, I digress. Asked her what it felt like to be only the third African American woman to win the supporting actress Oscar (and fourth overall). I had written a story on this but since Eddie Murphy lost, it seems my editors decided that just having TWO black actors win in one night wasn't so noteworthy anymore. After all, it already happened with Denzel and Halle.
022507EddieMurphy320.jpgWhile Celine Dion was singing on the screen and the backstage interview was the foreign film winner who is speaking in German. What is there to do? Gossip with Richard Roeper! He heard that after losing the best supporting actor race to Alan Arkin, Murphjy left! If that's the truth, it's not very gracious of Norbit. After all, remember 10 years ago when poor Lauren Bacall, as much as a front-runner for "The Mirror Has Two Faces" as Murphy was for "Dreamgirls," smiled bravely and clapped after Juliet Binoche won (this pains me to this day) then not only did Bacall stay through the whole show, she went to the Governor's Ball and danced with Kevin Spacey.
12 4.jpgAl Gore and the team behind "An Inconvenient Truth" were just wrapping up their backstage Q&A session and were almost out of the room when Melissa Etheridge's name was called as winner of best original song "I Need to Wake Up" which she wrote for the movie. Gore tip-toed back into the press room to watch Etheridge accept the Oscar. He clapped wildly and smiled ear-to-ear. He clapped again when Etheridge said "caring about the Earth is not red or blue, we are all green."
Anyway, I think that Alan Arkin didn't seem as overjoyed as you would think he might. I'm sure he's damned happy but it did not seem to be an out of body experience. He's been around the block many times and is 70-plus but good grief, when Jessica Tandy, just shy of 80, won her Oscar, she held it up and said: 'I'm on cloud NINE!"
022507MirrenBlanchett200.jpgThe real class act this year has been Helen Mirren. It could have been one of those situations where we would be sick of her since I've been there when she won the Emmy last fall for "Elizabeth I" then the Golden Globes and SAg Awards when she won for BOTH "Elizabeth I" and "The Queen." But ya know what? Helen Mirren is a highly intelligent, witty, sexy and hugely talented person and holds court backstage as good as anyone I've ever seen. She is in the moment, remembers people, is funny and relevant. She even told us what she'd been drinking: a vodka gimlet. I adore Helen Mirren. And Forrest Whitaker, such a class act. He was called away during the backstage interview to be photographed with Mirren, Hudson and Arkin but he insisted on coming back and picking up right where he left off. He's so much more animated backstage, not at all nervous like he gets on stage.
19 2.jpgAnd finally, Martin Scorsese! Was there a happier man in the Kodak Theater? And was there anyone people were happier for? All the major winners were such feel-good stories and people who you could root for. I may have been operating well below-par with this sinus infection thing, but I wouldn't have missed it for the world...and didn't!

Oscars 2007: Greg's red carpet recap...

311xInlineGallery 3.jpgHow embarrassing. I forget that I had committed to doing this Canadian radio show this morning with a cool guy named Shane Fox so when his producer calls, she totally wakes me up and when I get on the air, my voice comes out as a croak. I have this frog the size of Kermit and can't get rid of it the entire 20 minutes or so I'm on the air. But that didn't stop me from sharing my memories of Oscar night.
I'm gonna just get down to the silly, but yet important, stuff: When Jennifer Hudson walked by me, i told her she looked great and she did! How did i know that everyone was going to be saying that her wrap looked like a car fender? It looked good in person. But i look at the pics and yeah, car fender.
headline_1172471492.jpgLeonardo DiCaprio was the most handsome man on the red carpet, in my opinion. His hair slicked back and a nice air about him, he is a real movie star and knows how to act like one and is the best actor of his generation. Nicole Kidman (pictured below w/Meryl Streep), wearing this red dress, was THE standout in my mind. She's like a model on the red carpet but also has this air of grace and dignity. Like DiCaprio, she excudes true movie star quality AND is one of the best actresses of her generation.311xInlineGallery.jpgI thought Jodie Foster looked dazzling as she always does whenever she decides to attend these events and when I asked her who she was rooting for for best director, she smiled and said, "Awww. Martin Scorsese." It was sweet the way she looked when she said it because you knew she had long been rooting for the man who directed her to her first Oscar nomination 30 years ago in "Taxi Driver."
I gabbed with the super handsome Mark McGrath of "Extra" who used to be a rock star with Sugar Ray. He's so nice! He said he's still learning all this Hollywood stuff but I think he's got it nailed. Chatted with Wolfgang Puck for a moment and was about to talk to Joan Rivers when some Academy official said I was not allowed to bve ON the red carpet and ushered me to this spot in the bleachers. Sheesh! Some people are so inflexible...So once at ther bleachers, it got hard to get interviews but I did get to see, up-close, those two cute guys from "Y Tu Mama Tambien," whose names I will have to insert later. One of them was in "Babel" and he's so much smaller than I ever imagined. I coulda put him in my pocket!
311xInlineGallery 2.jpgWill and Jada went by with their son and look so happy all the time. Jada Pinkett Smith is someone who I always want to see on the red carpet. The "Prada" girls, Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway, glided by me too and Emily I think was with Michael Buble who is, I think, her boyfriend. Also saw Dave Koz, looking so dapper, but was unable to get his attention through all the madness. And it IS madness. You'd think these people had never been to the Oscars before. Sheesh!
STILL TO COME: Greg's backstage recap....

Oscars 2007: Ellen and Etheridge give us much to be proud of...

3842038.jpgI'll provide you with some kind of more complete wrap-up of the Academy Awards tomorrow. I'm glad to have made it through a long day while still under the weather. I'm gonna get out of my tux, make a cup of hot tea, and get some sleep. But wanted to share how proud I was of Ellen DeGeneres as the host. she reminded me of Johnny Carson, one of the most successful hosts of the show ever, in that she was pleasant and fun but didn't detract from the proceedings by trying to be too edgy etc. I love how she mingled with nominees in the audience and just was her fun self.
Good job Ellen!
ethridge.jpgAnd a big shout-out to Melissa Etheridge, winner for best original song who beat out three strong entries from "Dreamgirls." "This is the only naked man who will ever be in my bedroom," she said of her Oscar as she stood backstage taking questions. As one of the world's most famous lesbians, she was asked about thanking partner Tammy Lynn Michaels as her wife in her speech and giving her a big kiss before taking the stage.
"She was so important to me, especially with this project," she said of Michaels. "She said, 'Write what you feel.' She saved my life. I was kissing her because that's what you do when you win and Oscar, you kiss your loved one."
As far as anyone raising an eyebrow over such same-sex affection, Etheridge said: "I think the Oscars, it's like a gay holiday. So it's really meaningful that [host] Ellen [DeGeneres] or myself, there's no token gay here. It's a real mix here."

Greg blogs from Academy Awards beginning this afternoon!

Hi all:
I'll be blogging live from the Academy Awards on Sunday on the Daily News On the Red Carpet site. I'll be on the red carpet initially then backstage bringing you little tidbits about whatever I see and hear. Should start posting around 3 p.m. and continue to throughout the ceremony...
Happy Oscars!

p.s. My predictions in the main categories: picture: Little Miss Sunshine, director: Martin Scorsese, actor: Forrest Whittaker; actress: Helen Mirren; supporting actor: Eddie Murphy; supporting actress: Jennifer Hudson.

"Little Miss Sunshine" dominates at Spirit Awards...

2007-02-25T014921Z_01_NOOTR.jpgThe road comedy "Little Miss Sunshine," the gem of 2006, won the top prize at the Spirit Awards on Saturday night and is considered a serious best picture contender at Sunday's Academy Awards. I'm so glad to see that the co-directors, the husband-and-wife team of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (pictured, right), won as well. The were nominated for the DGA prize but somehow passed over for an Oscar nod. But on Oscar morning, they gave interviews to reporters, including me, anyway. And they were funny and so happy for the other Oscar nods. Class acts. Screenwriter Michael Arndt took the Spirit for best first screenplay and Alan Arkin won for his supporting role as a junkie grandfather. Both are up for Oscars as is Abigial Breslin for supporting actress.
The top acting prizes went to Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling and newcomer Shareeka Epps for the drug drama "Half Nelson." Oscar-winner Frances McDormand won a Spirit for her supporting turn in the suburban saga "Friends With Money." (She was superb. Catching this little-seen movie is worth it just for McDormand alone). The screenplay Spirit went to Jason Reitman, the writer/director of the smoking satire "Thank You For Smoking."
"Little Miss Sunshine" and "Half Nelson" led the contenders with five nominations each.

Greg gears up for the Academy Awards...

ared-head3.jpgStopped by the Kodak Theater today to get my picture taken for Academy Awards press credentials. I'm dragging a bit from the flu still so didn't wander like I usually do but I'm told I missed Joan and Melissa Rivers by about an hour and that Mary Hart was the first person to get her pix taken this morning.
Anyway, I'll be blogging live from the Academy Awards on Sunday on the Daily News On the Red Carpet site. I'll be on the red carpet initially then backstage bringing you little tidbits about whatever I see and hear. Should start posting around 1 p.m. and continue to throughout the ceremony...

akabc.jpg...also, this Saturday night (Feb. 25) I will appearing on KABC (790 -AM) radio's Mark Isler Show to talk about the Academy Awards. I'm told my segment begins about 10 p.m. and might last as much as an hour. This marks the third time in recent months that I've appeared with Mark and I am always happy to do so.

BAFTAs: John Barrowman hosts E! pre-show

abarrow1.jpgI've had fun watching some of John Barrowman's co-hosting of the E! pre-show and especially loved when he saw Jake Gyllenhaal follow Daniel Craig down the red carpet and said what any red-blooded gay man was thinking: "Jake Gyllenhaal and Daniel Craig behind us! Hot! Hot! I'll fight you for every one of them [He said to a female fashion expert]. OK, you have one, you have one, I'll have the other.

Here are a few clips. Click HERE to see John's back and forth with co-host Ruby Wax and HERE for a more lengthy clip of him commentating and just being energetic and adorable.

Enjoy!!

British Academy Awards include win for Jennifer Hudson...

ajake2.jpg
abondbafta2.jpgThe BAFTAs had a major hunk factor on Saturday between presenter Jake Gyllenhaal (last year's supporting actor winner for 'Brokeback Mountain') and best actor nominee Daniel Craig, nominated for his studly performance in "Casino Royale" but losing to the amazing Forest Whitaker.
amckellen.jpgAmong the other presenters at the BAFTA awards were the great Sir Ian McKellen who makes gay men everywhere proud. He is a serious actor of stage and screen and an absolute box office megastar with key roles in the "Lord of the Rings" and "X-Men" franchises as well as the 2006 mega-blockbuster "The Da Vinci Code."
With all these award shows, some of the major nominees are racking up some serious air miles! Dame Helen Mirren and Whitaker, winners of the BAFTA best actress and best actor prizes in London, were both present to accept after appearing at the Oscar nominees lunch in Beverly Hills five days earlier. A few days before the Oscar lunch, Mirren was back in London filming so she had to tape her appearance at the Director's Guild Awards where her husband, Taylor Hackford was being honored.
amiirenzz.jpgSo that means Mirren was in LA for the Jan. 28 SAG Awards, then back to the UK for filming...back to LA for the Feb. 5 Oscar lunch then back to the UK for the Feb. 10 BAFTAs. Of course, she will return to LA for the Feb. 25 Academy Awards ceremony where she is the front-runner to win.
Whitaker's schedule was similar except for the extra trip to the UK for filming.
Helen Mirren is 61 years old! How does she did it?Mirren beat out a field identical to the Oscar nods: Dame Judi Dench (Notes on a Scandal), Penelope Cruz (Volver), Kate Winslet (Little Children) and Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada).
aforest2.jpgWhitaker beat out Craig, Leonardo DiCaprio (The Departed), Richard Griffiths (The History Boys) and Peter O'Toole (Venus) for the best actor prize.Anyhow, Jennifer Hudson was in LA for Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy bash on Saturday night where she performed. If she had been in London, she could have accepted her BAFTA Award for best supporting actress in person! She appeared as a presenter on last night's Grammys as well.

Some head-scratching Grammy presenters....

Don't get me wrong, it was a GREAT show - one of the best in many years. But I ask you, what the HELL was Scarlett Johanson, who has never had a record in her brief life, doing presenting the BEST ALBUM award with Don Henley? What an insult to all the great artists and legends who were at the Grammys last night.
ascarlette.jpgWhy not have Joan Baez, who looked amazing and is a legend, present with Henley? That REALLY annoyed me. Apparently she is about to record an album. She asked Henley if he had any advice for her. He said: "No." And he seemed to mean it.
Then you had the strange presence of Al Gore presenting best ROCK album with Queen Latifah. I know he was initially scheduled to present with Mellisa Etheridge who wrote the song for his "An Inconvenient Truth" flick. But there was nothing really clever said to explain the former veep's presence.
And what about the trio who presented Best Country Album? Mandy Moore. OK, fine, she's a singer. LeAnn Rimes. Perfect. She's a singer AND does Country songs. so far so good. Rounding out the threesome? LUKE WILSON? What the? I like Luke Wilson, don't get me wrong. But he has no business presenting Grammys is all I'm saying.
And good God, what the heck was DAVID SPADE doing there? I know it's a CBS telecast. I know Spade has a new sitcom on CBS. But this man has officially started to bug me. He has to 1. Get a haircxut. 2. Get a new schtick.
In a similar gripe, two cast members from CBS' "How I Met Your Mother" sitcom, Alyson Hannigan and Corie Smulders introduced Gnarls Barkley. I don't get it. Were the producers sitting around thinking, "Hmmmmm. Who will introduce Gnarls Barkley? I got it! Alyson Hannigan! She's perfect! No one else will do!"
Similarly, Christina Ricci (hugh? she doesn't even have a CBS sitcom) and Samuel L. Jackson introducing the R&B segment featuring Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie, Chris Brown and an out-of-this-world Christina Aguilera.
I mean, if you're going to have actors presenting, at least have some who have recorded an album. I got one! William Shatner! Oh yeah, wrong network. His "Boston Legal" airs on ABC.

Backstage moments at the Grammys...

ablige.jpg
If there were any of you who were following my live blogging on the On the Red Carpet site last night, I lost all Internet connection backstage at the Grammys and was unable to blog during the lst 40 minutes or so of the show. It was excrutiating! But I cheered up when some of the bigger names began coming into our interview room. I am now officially all about Mary J. Blige. Love, love LOVE her! There was nothing really gay about the Grammys this year but Blige has that survivor thing going on that so many of us can identify with. "This has been an incredible night for me...it has been a personal breakthrough....You just strive to put your back up straight because you're sick of slumping." Great woman and amazing singer....
abennett.jpgTony Bennett, that ageless wonder, spent loads of time with us backstage talking about how he has always strived to make timeless music that would still be listenable 50 years from now. He! has certainly accomplished that. Tony is 80 years old, an amazing 80 years old, and talked about how finding something that you love in life and doing it, keeps you young. He is living proof. He is a living legend who now has 14 Grammys, the first won in the early 60s for "I Left My Heart in San Francisco."
adixie.jpg
And, of course, who isn't thrilled for The Dixie Chicks? For them to win five Grammys including album and record of the year was sweet vindication for the absolutely horrendous backlash they suffered through for daring to speak their minds in the United States of America. We waited an hour for them to come backstage and talk to us - which is partly why I'm so dead-tired today - and I left in frustration about 10:30 p.m. I said to my award show buddy Sandra Barrera: "I'm tired of waiting for the Pixie Stixs!" But here are some backstage comments from other artists on the Chicks win: John Mayer said "it was just almost an instant classic album...They were running from a lot of ghosts."
aludacris1.jpg
I also became a fan of Ludacris who last year, walked by me on the red carpet at the Oscars and I had no idea who he was. At the Grammys, he performed magically and backstage, he told us that he cut off his signature braids because he didn't want to turn 30 next year with cornrows. He also did not hild back when describing what winning a Grammy (his first) for "Release Therapy" meant to him: "Today is pretty much the best day of my life...no words can explain how great I feel right now."
Multiple winners The Red Hot Chili Peppers came backstage and were so friendly and fun. They were ready to take all the questions we had for them - and we had many - but this very annoying woman with an ugly gold lame coat and frazzled hair rushed them off the stage. This woman was a nightmare. I got to the press room about noon. By 1 p.m. she was on my nerves. By 2:30 p.m. I hated her. By the end of the night (10:30 p.m.), I was making a list of various ways to not exactly kill her, but maybe tie her up and stuff her in a closet so she could rethink her attitude...and her hairdo!
achilipeppers.jpgAnyway, one of the Chili Peppers, Chad Smith the drummer, made a face at her behind her back and she saw him. Busted! Most peeps would laugh it off, but gold coat lady was incensed. I was convulsing in laughter. It was so third-grade...and so funny! When Chad walked back into the press room earlier, he looked around and said: "You guys are stuck back here the whole time? Why? Why? Were you bad in college?"

Greg goes to the Grammys...

trophy.jpgThis should be a kick. I've never covered the Grammys before but I'm giving it a go and am about to head out to Staples Center in a bit. Best part: no tuxedo required! This awards season, I've started to feel like an extra in "Happy Feet."
I'll be roaming around inside and outside of Staples Center and the Convention Center where they will be handing out awards starting in the early afternoon, well before the telecast starts on CBS. So click onto Dailynews.com starting around 1 p.m. or so and I'll be writing away on the On the Red Carpet blog LIVE!
A recap of the day will appear either late tonight or early tomorrow on Out In Hollywood...

Dave Koz to entertain at Oscar's Governor's Ball...

At last year's Academy Awards, while I was doing interviews on the red carpet, Wolfgang Puck came by with a tray of his mini chocolate Oscars. He gave me one. I ate it. It was gooooooood. He was showing us some of the food he would be serving to guests after the show at the Governor's Ball.
puck01.jpgMy ticket must have been lost in the mail. Because after the show, the closest I got to the Governors Ball was when I walked by the front doors of the shindig with a laptop computer bag slung over my shoulder. I was going direct from the interview room at the Kodak Theater to a bus shuttle parked on Orange Avenue that took me and other journalists back to the Arclight parking structure.
Real glamorous, huh?
So it is with great envy that I report some of what will happen at this year's bash as reported by my colleague, L.A. Daily News food editor Natalie Haughton, who got a preview this week. The ballroom will be divided into five pavilions and the food will consist of the main buffet, tray-passed appetizers, tapas, sushi and seafood stations - more varieties of food than ever - will be orchestrated for the 13th year by Puck.
Puck and his team will be serving 800 pounds of chicken, 1,200 pounds of lobster, 40 pounds of black truffles and 20 pounds of white truffles. They will be smoking 60 sides of salmon for the must-have traditional Smoked Salmon Oscars With French Farm-Raised Osetra Caviar.
05.Grammys The vent's pastery chef, Sherry Yard, is making 200 two-pound Valrhona organic bittersweet chocolate Oscar statuettes with 24-karat gold dust blown on them to decorate the platters. As is traditional, she's also preparing 3,000 smaller chocolate Oscars for guests to take home.
That's all enough to make me really bitter - especially since I will likely be having an In-N-Out Burger or something. Well, that sounds pretty darn good actually.
But I will miss the opportunity to see saxophonist Dave Koz as the featured entertainment. He's a perfect choice since he just released his new CD of movie theme and I am so proud to have an out and proud gay musician performing for the A-listers.
Dave is ready for his close-up...

More on LeeLee Sobieski's breast in show moment...

015_9A.JPG
Well, it seems that the whole LeeLee Sobieski wardrobe malfunction episode at Saturday night's Directors Guild of America Awards has helped to drive up traffic for Out In Hollywood, which described the incident in detail in the post "The DGAs: from Scorsese's win to Sobieski's wardrobe malfunction."
I thought it would be fun to share a snapshot of the lovely LeeLee and my pal James, who was in town over the weekend and who I took to the event. James, who cover politics in Ohio, is wondering if ALL Hollywood events are this exciting...
p.s. This photo was taken after the wardrobe malfunction onstage. But even in place, the dress looks pretty dangerous!

My lunch with DiCaprio, Wahlberg and Jennifer Hudson...

8.jpg
One really cool thing about the Oscar nominees luncheon is that there is no pecking order when it comes to seating. Nominees are spread out throughout the Beverly Hilton Hotel ballroom which means there is no single table dedicated to "The Departed" or "Babel" etc.
So this is why I found myself sitting right NEXT to Jennifer Hudson at lunch. You know, "Can you pass the butter?" close. She was very nice and remembered our little elevator ride at the SAG awards a few weeks ago when we chatted about the "Dreamgirls" soundtrack.
So that's pretty cool I figure, I'm good. Then a nice couple sits down to the left of me and it is Curtis Hanson and his wife. Curtis is not only an incredible director-screenwriter ("L.A. Confidential" "Wonder Boys") but he is also a member of the Academy's Board of Governors. I tell him how "Wonder Boys" is one of my very favorite films. He could not have been more friendly, full of questions and even stopping Sherry Lansing to introduce her to me as she makes her way to her table. Lansing is glowing and is to receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Oscars.
Several other nominees are at out table including writer Todd Field who wrote "Little Children" and was nominated previously for the terrific "In the Bedroom," and film editing nominee Christopher Rouse ("United 93").
So, our table in pretty top-notch.
013_13A.JPGThen the table right next to us fills up and i realize I am sitting back-to-back with Leonardo DiCaprio. I've seen both "Blood Diamond" and "The Departed" in recent weeks and tell him how good he was in both. I also tell him how moved everyone was by his tribute to Martin Scorsese a few nights earlier at the Directors Guild of America Awards. Mark Wahlberg is also at that table and I congratulate him on his supporting actor nomination.
Even though I have covered the industry for going on eight years, I realize that this is a really singular experience for me and I try and take it all in. But I'm also hungry so I'm not so overcome with awe that I don't dig into an appetizer platter that includes vegetable sushi roll with wasabi caviar, peking duck in mandarin pancake, smoked salmon canape with dill mouse, and (my favorite): Kyoto Beef Roll with cumcumber and jicama. Hey, I don't know what half that stuff is but it was all printed in the program so I am able to inform you in detail. It was TASTY!
19.jpgJennifer (as in Hudson) is with her acting coach but spending a lot of time on her Blackberry. I later find out that it's her sister she's communicating with and they are dealing with their mother who is fretting over what to wear at the Oscars.
As we dig into our artichoke salad, I start my head around and see that sitting at the table next to DiCaprio's but up on another level of the ballroom, is Helen Mirren, looking as lovely as ever. Eddie Murphy is at another nearby table which also includes director James L. Brooks. Scorsese is nearby and Leonardo goes over to give him a hug hello.
Before we are served the main course, all of the nominees are called to the stage for a big group picture. That is fun to watch and it is even more fun when they are then called, one at a time, from the bleachers is reverse alphabetical order to receive their nomination certificate as well as a gift bag that includes an official Oscar sweatshirt as well as a T-shirt, each with a line from one of the best picture winners of years past.
The process takes a long time but I don't mind because Wahlberg got his early and I find that we are standing next to each other at our tables watching the rest of the nominees and clapping wildly. Curtis Hanson had gone to stand with James L. Brooks and Jennifer was still up there so I felt a little abandoned at my table.
When Jennifer gets back to our table, I ask her what line her T-shirt has. She takes it out of the bag and we look: it's Diane Keaton's "La di da" line from "Annie Hall."
At this point, DiCaprio and Wahlberg are about to skip out before the main meal and Jennifer shyly taps Leo on the shoulder to ask if she can get a photo taken with he and Mark. Leo, looking pleasantly surprised, said, "I'd be honored."
I was honored to share this lunch with all of them.

Oscar nominees lunch...the stars arrive!

14.jpgI'm sitting here trying to process my afternoon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, site of the Academy's 26th annual luncheon for Oscar nominees. I got there kinda early to watch the stars walk in and saw Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith nearly cause a riot when they entered the lobby and fans were lined up with cameras. I don't think there is a nicer couple in Hollywood when it comes to fans. They posed for pics, signed things and looked happy and relaxed.
2602.jpgForest Whitaker was also working the line tirelessly as was Penelope Cruz. When Abigail Breslin, the little girl from "Little Miss Sunshine" was giving an autograph, I thought: 'How cute, some star is letting her daughter give a fan an autograph." Duh! I soon realized who it was! Mellissa Ethridge, looking terrific, caused a frenzy and radiated such great energy as she interacted with fans.
2.jpg006_20A.JPG Once the stars made it past the fans and a roomful of photographers, they entered the ballroom with an entrance crammed with superstars, legends and other nominees. When former Academy President and Oscar winner Karl Malden, now into his 90s, made his way to the door, Clint Eastwood quickly walked over to warmly greet him.
012_14A.JPGLeonardo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg chatted against a back wall, out of eyeshot of most people. Djimon Hounsou stood near the entrance with his manager, looking dapper in a dark suit.
Now here's a scary moment for Peter O'Toole. He walks into the ballroom and the first face he see is...ME! Maybe I was the one who was scared. I had not thought he was coming since he missed the SAG Awards last week and the Golden Globe Awards in January. But there he was wearing a tan jacket and looking pleased to be among his peers. Our eyes met and I said: 'Peter O'Toole!" He smiled and said, "Hello." Then I said, "Good luck!"
Real articulate.
20.jpgA few minutes later, I see O'Toole hugging the very funny Bruce Vilanch who is usually on the writing staff for the Oscar telecast. They chat for a long while and at one point, O'Toole is petting Vilanch's trademark mop-top of blonde hair. After they parted, I walked over to Vilanch, who I have met several times in the past and said, "Do you and Peter O'Toole go way back?"
Bruce: "I'm the O'Toole family's pet Jew. I did 'An Evening with Peter O'Toole,' a one-man stage show, so I've known him for over 20 years. Whenever he comes into town, I get petted."
We both laugh. I laugh again when Helen Mirren walks in, with a friend, and is stuck in the middle of the crowd. She says: I don't know where we go here. Perhaps nowhere."
6.jpgAt one point, I stopped and took in my surroundings. Literally within a 10-feet radius of me are Penelope Cruz talking to Guillermo del Toro, Forest Whitaker, Will and Jada, Eddie Murphy and Sherry Lansing. It's surreal, and really terrific fun.
And lunch has not even started yet at this point. Will tell ya all about that in the next post.

DGA Awards: Red carpet encounters and show moments...

9.jpg4 2.jpg
There was some senitment that this year's Directors Guild of America Awards were not as star-studded as in years past. Maybe. But those who did show up were first-rate and some are among the hottest stars in the business. "Ugly Betty" star America Fererra, 2007 Oscar nominees Jennifer Hudson and Alan Arkin, Steve Martin, ABC anchor Charles Gibson, the lovely Maria Bello, 2007 Golden Globe winner Kyra Segdwick, Aaron Eckhart, 2007 SAG winner Chandra Wilson, and "Desperate Housewives" star Felicity Huffman.
Martin_Leonardo.jpg
At the top of the list would have to be Leonardo DiCaprio who has grown from teen actor to 20-something hearthrob to absolute movie superstar in his early 30s. Between his Oscar-nominated performance in "Blood Diamond" and Golden Globe and SAG nominated performance in "The Departed," this is causing people to really take notice that he is becoming the finest actor of his generation. And the respect he showed in honoring Martin Scorsese was so touching. It was about loving film and looking up to a man who had taught him so much. It wasn't about all the silliness that Hollywood and the awards season can so often be about.
5 2.jpgThen you had Hudson, one of the most wonderful a star is born stories in Hollywood history. First movie role results in a Golden Globe Award, a SAG Award and an Oscar nomination. Her performance in "Dreamgirls," especially her show-stopping number "And I'm Tellin You I'm Not Going," is one for the ages. She is still inexperienced at these events and read her tribute to Bill Condon off a sheet of paper instead of a teleprompter and stumbled a few times. But in the end, enough of her warmth and personality came through and she did Condon proud.
Aaron Eckhart, looking more like a big movie star all the time, has been more of a red carpet fixture this year than ever before thanks to his Golden Globe-nominated performance in "Thank You For Smoking." He was on hand Saturday night to present the best documentary prize to Arunas Matelis for "Before Flying Back to the Earth."
3.jpgMatellas and I spoke on the red carpet before the show and he was hopeful that awards recognition would get his film, about children living with leukemia in a pediatric hospital in Lithuania cancer, more widely seen. "It is not a film just about the pain...It's about our destiny, our faith, our friends, our whole lives."
It was great talking to "Babel" director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu who I first met back in 2001 at Miramax's Golden Globes party (Where does the time go?) and he was talking about his "Ameros Perros." Inarritu (pictured at another event) is such a passionate filmmaker and we talked about all of the awards show hoopla he finds himself in the center of, especially after "Babel" took home the best picture-drama prize at the Golden Globes last month. He is up for the Oscar as well.
00720431250.jpg"It's fun, it's overwhelming, it's exhausting, it's everything," he said. "It's a great honor to be nominated with people like Martin Scorsese and Stephen Frears and Clint Eastwood it's already a huge honor for me. I knew this film would take me a lot of time, three years of my life. A liver, a piece of my heart. Film can kill you!"
They may have missed out on an Oscar nomination for "Little Miss Sunshine," but the husband and wife directing team of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris were basking in the glow of the DGA nomination and received a very warm and funny tribute from Steve Carell, one of the stars of their film. On her way into the show, Faris told me: "I'm very honored to be in this group of directors and to be nominated for our first film, it's incredible. It took us five years." She added that she planned to enjoy Oscar night with "Sunshine" up for best picture: 'I'm going to have fun. I have nothing to worry about. Just to be nominated [for best picture] blew our minds."
And before her wardrobe malfunction stole the show, I said hello to LeeLee Sobieski on the red carpet. I had done a magazine profile on her a few years back and she is even more beautiful now. I asked her what she had been up to: 'I've finished six films, one called "88 Minutes" with Al Pacino." (she rattled off a few more titles but was talking so fast I had some trouble transcribing 'em). But I did get this parting line: "I'm having a great time and I'm really excited about tonight!"
And what a night for LeeLee, for everyone.
I can't wait till next year!

DGA Awards: A proud night for gays...

kinseyprea.jpgBill Condon may not have been nominated for an Academy Award for directing the fabulous "Dreamgirls," but he was nominated for the prestigious DGA prize by his peers. He lost, as he predicted to me a few weeks ago, to Martin Scorsese but it was a night where he and other gay directors were prominent.
Jennifer Hudson was on hand to present Condon with his nomination medallion. "I have always believed in standing by those who stand by me," the Oscar nominee said. "I had never stepped foot on a set. He trusted me with one of the greatest roles in theater history and pulled emotions out of me I didn't even know I had." Hudson added that Condon "was the heart, soul and spirit of 'Dreamgirls.'"
When the director himself took the stage, he thanked his early influences Stanley Donen, Vincente Minnelli and George Cukor as well as contemporaries like Michael Mann, Steven Speilberg and Martin Scorsese whose influences can be found in his films. One of the sets from Scorsese's 1977 picture "New York, New York" was actually used in "Dreamgirls."
Condon said he shared the award with the late Michael Bennett who directed the show on Broadway: "He was on my shoulder every day."
mv-marshall.jpgRob Marshall, who won the top DGA prize for directing "Chicago" a few years back, won other DGA award Saturday night, this time for directing a Tony Bennett special for television. "Working on this was a gift for me, I'm telling you...Seeing [Bennett] sing 'I Left My Heart in San Francisco' standing two feet away from me was the thrill of my life."
Paris Barclay already has a full shelf of awards that includes two Emmys, a Peabody award and a DGA award. But on Saturday he was honored for his decades of service to the DGA and among those he thanked were his partner, Christopher and their two sons. "It has been an absolute pleasure because you have done more service to me than I ever have for you."

The DGAs: from Scorsese's win to Sobieski's wardrobe malfunction...

martyLeo_Steven.jpgIt was a heckuva night on Saturday at the star-studded Directors Guild of America Awards where the great Martin Scorsese finally won the prestigious industry prize for "The Departed." He was presented the trophy by Steven Spielberg and said: "It's the first time I've been given this recognition...I didn't think I'd be standing here tonight I can tell you that...I am greatly honored."
Marty271x248.jpgBut just as touching was earlier in the evening when a dashing Leonardo DiCaprio, star of "The Departed" as well as Scorsese's "The Aviator" and "The Gangs of New York" showed such class and respect when presenting his mentor and "teacher" a nomination medallion. (What's cool about the DGAs is that all the five feature film nominees get a big presentation from one of the stars of their film so everyone is a winner on this night). DiCaprio, easily the most handsome man in the room, said he was "foirever changed" by the seven years he has spent working with Scorsese. "He's not just a director, he's an educator."
Scorsese was so clearly moved by DiCaprio's tribute and it was indeed the most heartfelt of the night: "That was beautiful Leo. Thank you. Thank you. My God. That was quite moving."
10.jpg
Besides the Scorsese win, the other most buzzed-about moment of the night was about presenter LeeLee Sobieski who was presenting the daytime television directorial prize. The statuesque beauty walked out wearing a very revealing dress that would make Carmen Electra look like a nun. As she began her presentation, the dress shifted and half of her breast was exposed. She was completely unaware and kept on with her presentation which was filled with seductive lines about each soaps plotline. She went on and on and on. The audience was spellbound. When the ballroom was darkened to show clips of the nominees, Sobieski remained on the stage to prepare to announce the winner. No one told her of her wardrobe malfunction or ran out with some double-stick tape to rescue her. She announed the winner, breast nipple still exposed and was asked to read the absent winner's acceptance speech. She did. It was a long one. She remained projected on all of the big screens in the ballroom. It was like we were all in grade school with the room buzzing and people giggling.
1.jpgHost Carl Reiner, who would remark about all that had gone on, left that one alone. But Maria Bello took the stage in a red dress with a plunging neckline and said to the audience: "Please, dear God someone tell me if my boob falls out. Please, be brave." She then jokingly covered her breasts with both hands for a second before reading the nominations.
7 3.jpgBut the LeeLee fin was not over. Presenter Steve Martin took the stage and said: "Sorry I was a little late. I was backstage trying to convince LeeLee Sobieski that the best way to remove double-sided tape is with saliva."
BIG laugh followed.
I will say this: Sobieski did not let it get her down. After the show, she was strolling around the ballroom lobby looking very lovely (malfunctioned fixed), posed for pictures with fans and appeared to be in a very good mood. I personally wanted to throw a poncho over her or something.
What a night.

SAG Awards...a red carpet recap

These are a compilation of some of my red carpet blogging from last night...Enjoy!!!

Oh, what I've been through. Total techical nightmare that required me to dictate my red carpet ramblings to a very patient Armando Hernandez who I work with. He was great! Now I'm in a dimly lit deadline room (cannot see a bloody thing!) getting ready for this thing to get going!
asag2.jpg
Before leaving the red carpet, in one eyeful, I saw Mary Tyler Moore getting ohotgraphed by te throngs of photogs, Megan Mullally standing nearby beaming. Maybe she didn't want to do that damned talk show anymore anyway! And Julie Andrews is a few feet away from Mary. It's a a "Thoroughly Modern Millie" reunion! All they need is Carol Channing!
Some Grey's Anatomy stars like Sara Ramirez and Katherine Heigl did interviews but Ellen Pompeo just posed for pics as far as I could see and Sandra Oh and Patrick Depmsey sailed by fan and press. T.R. Knight is here tho! Good for him. No sign of Isaiah Washington, he's still in "gayhab."
OK, show is starting!!!

asag5.jpgHere is some of the barely coherent things I dictated to my colleague, Armando Hernandez (no relation) as I stood near the entrance of the red carpet: Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher just walked in, sending the bleacher crowd in to a frenzy. But that was nothing compared to the reception for nominee Jennifer Hudson of "Dreamgirls." Hudson is wearing a vintage plum-colored gown and showing lots of cleavage, she waves to the fans and just missed runnning into Mirren at the ET booth by a fraction of a second...Also causing excitment was super couple Warren Beatty - and his wife Annette Benning, nominee tonight....
Just arriving are Eddie Murphy, Leo DiCaprio, Helen Mirren, all oscar-nominees....Marcia Gay Harden just walked by me, teetering on gold pumps. I hope she doesn't fall when she walks on the red carpet...
asag3.jpg"Ugly Betty" star America Ferrera - who's is looking more like "Gorgeous Betty" in an Emerald-green gown...fans in the bleachers go nuts...Steve Carell and Greg Kinnear just walked by. They were two feet away from me and didn't bother to say hello. They are OFF my Christmas card list!
And some stuff that never even made it onto the blog earlier today: One of the first stars to arrive was Sean Pyfrom of "Desperate Housewives" which was nominated for best comedy enemble. He has gotten so cute! I can say that, he's 20 now. He is with his youngish-looking mother and they hurry over to the TV Guide booth for a live interview with that awful Melissa Rivers. I'm not one to be catty, but her hair looks like it was styled with an egg beater. She asks Sean a buncha dumb question but does not ask why the hell his gay character has been completely merginalized this season.
asag4.jpgI then climb into the bleachers and start gabbing with fans and security people and it's a blast. We see Mariska Hargitay...sooooo beautiful, then we see Shirley Jones and her biggest fan, Marfty Ingles...There's Justn Kirk from "Weeds," Edie Falco from "Sopranos," Eric Nabius from "Ugly Betty."
"I've loved him since 'Welcome to My Dollhouse," one of the bleacher fans tells me.
We all agree that Kyle McLaughlin has amazing hair.

I leave the bleachers and go back to the entrace on the red carpet. Suddenly, there she is: Mary Tyler Moore! She looks sensational. I worship MTM. She must be pushing 70 now...Remember when her and Rhoda used to just eat salad for dinner on their show. They really did need more protein.

A good night for "Grey's Anatomy" at SAG Awards...

greys%20anatomy.JPG
You had to wonder, and I did, what would happen if "Grey's Anatomy" won any awards at the Screen Actiors Guild Awards tonight. I mean, who wasn't thinking about the whole Isaiah Washington debacle which was just two weeks ago?So when Chandra Wilson beat a very competitive field to win outstanding actress in a drama series, she kind of made everyone laugh when she refered to the absent Washington who entered some kind of rehab facility to deal with his issues.
dd_sagchandra03.jpg"First of all, it's about those 10 cast members sitting over there," Wilson said, refering to her castmates, "And the other one in rehab."
I love how Wilson ended her speech: "Just to be able to take this thing home to my girls, in particular, and hold it in front of them and say, 'Look, with this skin and this nose, and this height, and these arms,' you know, 'I'm here!' Thank you Screen Actors Guild for taking me as I am."
It's too bad they didn't let Wilson speak again - or Patrick Dempsey, or T.R. Knight, or Sara Ramirez, or Sandra Oh, or ANYBODY else besides Ellen Pompeo- when the show's cast won for best drama series ensemble.
"We're honored to be in the company of all the felow nominees," she began.
Okay, so far so good. But instead of turning around and mentioning any of the stellar cast members behind her or talking about working through hard times or whatever, she says: "And i think because this category is ensemble, it;s worth mentioning the members of our cast that are not here."
She starts with Kate Walsh, who is actually standing right behind her! She means Kate Burton who hasn't been on the show for awhile now. "Help me...Isaiah Washington...I'm drawing a blank, please help me..."
To quote Katherine Heigl: Pompeo "should not speak in public. Period."

Screen Actors Guild Awards: Post-show encounters...

Just got home from the Shrine Auditorium where I was blogging live on the "On the Red Carpet" blog on DailyNews.com. But "Out In Hollywood" readers get a summary of the night and hopefully, with far fewer typos than in my live blogging where the idea is to post stuff as it happens.
sag_sunshine.jpgSome of my favorite movies of the year did well with the cast of "Little Miss Sunshine" surprising absolutely everyone and winning the best ensemble award over the casts of "Dreamgirls," "Babel," "Bobby" and "the Departed." Just before I left the Shrine for the night, I watched cast members Steve Carell (who played a depressed gay man getting over a break-up in the film), Greg Kinnear (very cute), the adorable Abigail Breslin and Alan Arkin doing an interview with one of the E! anchors around this little table. They looked tired!
dd_sag151mirren03.jpgBefore and during the show you are in such a frenzy and once it's over, I felt kinda goofy in that punch-drunk way. So my colleague Sandra Bererra and I were sitting at a table in the press room when the service elevator opened and there stood Helen Mirren - someone else carrying her two SAG trophies - along with her husband, the director Taylor Hackford. I couldn't help but yell out: "Hey! Congratulations!" And I waved. Helen Mirren, very down to earth, waved back and shouted out "Thank you!" It was a funny moment. But apparently, i wasn't through being a reporter/blogger/fan for the night. Sandra and I pack up our laptops and are about to leave when the damned elevator opens again and damn if there isn't Jennifer Hudson and her group. I'm a madman. I yell out: "Hey! Can we ride down the elevator with Jennifer Hudson?" They say, "Sure!" So Sandra and I nudge our way in and I start gabbing with Effie.
asag9.jpgME: "Do you need to add a room to your house to put all these trophies?"
JENNIFER: [laughs]
SANDRA: Eyes roll back in head.
ME:"I've seen 'Dreamgirls' three times. I love the soundtrack." [Then I actually - oh my God - quietly start singing a few bars of "I'm Tellin You, I'm Not Going." Got caught up in the moment I guess. But Jennifer takes it all in stride.]
JENNIFER: "Do you have the regular CD or the special one with ALL the songs on it?"
ME: "I think I have the regular one." [I now realize I have the special one but I was momentarily blank because Effie was so nice, had her hand on my shoulder, was so sweet.]
JENNIFER: "Get the special one," she says as she is stepping out of the elevator and someone else carries her SAG trophy. "It's got a remix of "I'm Telling You I'm Not Going." Bye!"
ME: "Bye! Have fun tonight!"
SANDRA: You're such a fan."

Golden Globes: Down memory lane with Will Ferrell...

awillFerrell2.jpgSo my colleague and awards show buddy Sandra Bererra and I are waiting outside the Beverly Hilton last night for a shuttle to take us back to our cars that are parked in Century City. We notice that a VERY curly-haired Will Ferrell is standing on the sidewalk with his wife waiting for his limo. I don't really know Will but I used to a little bit. It was back in 1990 or so and we were both part of a class that put on a weekly newscast on public television. I didn't think much of Will then because he was very quiet and seemed to take himself very seriously. But as he got famous on "SNL" about five or six years later, I dug up a VHS tape I had of one of our "Around and About Orange County News" shows and realized that I introduced one of his pieces when I was anchoring the program. It was on the water company or something. I mangled his name too! I had trouble with the W's and the L's. Try saying it fast three times.
I don't know where the heck the tape is now but I dug it out every so often in the 90s to show to friends. So when I saw him last night, I thought it would be fun to remind him of those days. "I'm glad to see you moved on to what you really wanted to do," I told him. He kind of chuckled but seemed really uptight. I can see why. People wanted to taKe his picture, someone else came up and said, "I worked on the crew" of some film or another. Ferrell kept calling for the limo service on the cell phone and clearly could not wait to get the hell outa there.
I guess I picked the wrong time to go down memory lane.

Golden Globe arrivals...

brangelina.jpg
So, I've cut and pasted all of my ramblings from last night before the show started. Forgive the typos, I was going really fast and running all around. I have posted this picture of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie because, let's face it, they are STUNNING and really looked like the biggest movie stars in the world last night...

ajoan2.jpgI've been strolling around seeing what I can see. No stars on the red carpet yet but I spotted some of the TV hosts. The great Joan Rivers and her annoying daughter/sidekick Mellissa Rivers made a grand entrance wearing mermaid-like dresses. (This picture is from last year. I'll find an updated one to sub out later) Joan has a pretty good figure for a 70-something woman. Mellissa was walking behind Joan on their way to the TV Giide booth...forever in her mother's shadow...
...Vanessa Minello just walked by me in the lobby of the hotel. Wow! She's a stunner and I think her boyfriend Nick Lachey came out on the winning end of that Jessica Simpson split. He's upgraded for sure! Spotted Lara Spencer of "The Insider" wearing a red gown, she always looks reliably good but never knockout like Vanessa....Saw some of the infotainment guys including Mark Steines of "Entertainment Tonight" who is so used to these things it's like a day at the park. And there was Mark McGrath in his tuxedo getting ready to go on for "Estra." He's a long ways from his days on Sugar Ray. What a transformation. I'd rather be a rock star tho...Pat O'Brien still looks rail-thin, as I noted last week from the People's Choice Awards. Somebody take this man to In-N-Out Burger before the show! He's gotta keep up his strength!
...I know that Matt Lauer and Al Roker are here from "The Today Shoiw" but they were not in their red carpet booth when I swung by...
That's all for now. Will write more in a bit although I think my access might get more limited.

alopez.jpgI'm not credentiaed to be on the red carpet but from the lobby of the hotel, I have a pretty good view of who is coming and going so far. Zach Braff is the only nominee here so far. When ya show up early like that, EVERYONE interviews you so Zach iks very in-demand right now....There's Josh the intern from "The Tonight Show"! I'll bet he's gonna giggle his way through the night. He's a hoot!...Mark McGrath, I thought was co-hosting the "Extra" pre-show but now Mario Lopez is in the booth playing co-hist with the woman with the really big hair...I mean BIG hair....OK, Nancy O'Dell is walking to her booth. The queen has arrived. She looks regal in a black dress...she looks hot!...And there is the lovely Deborah Norville hosting for "Inside Edition." She looks great, kinda like Felicity Huffman. I chatted with her last year when I was doing the red carpet interviews. I sided with Jane Pauley all those years ago in the "Today Show" flap but now, I feel like Norville was in a no-win.
I'm hungry now. I wonder if they are serving food yet. All the press peeps are getting grumpy back here in the deadline room.

aholloway.jpgIt's getting to be like the "Minority Report" at the hotel. Every time you go into a secure area, they scan your badge and your face pops up on their screen. It's like Tom Cruise's eyeballs in "Minority." So, Alec Baldwin just walked by me in the lobby. He looks very red. I don't know if he is sunburnt or if he is mad at someone. Ya never know...You can tell that "Lost" star Josh Holloway used to be a model. He is perfect in posing for the camera and very gracious and friendly in his interviews. His long flowing hair is perfect and he's got the ideal stubble. Who know rhat sulky Sawyer was such a ham!...I spotted the always friendly James Denton who is one of the more down-to-Earth TV stars around...I'm most excited about seeing Aaron Eckhart, a nominee for "Thank You for Smoking." He's always overlooked but he's here tonight and he looks like a real movie star...David Spade walked past real fast with people around him. I feel like saying to him, "and you are?????"...Peter Horton is here as one of the producers of "Grey's Anatomy" but he'll always be Gary from "Thirtysomething" to me! Remember when he died on the show? My roomate at the time was a wreck over it. He kept saying, "Gary died."
So, they have finally fed us! I may just watch the arrivals on the TV now because the lobby is getting awfully security-heavy.
Back in a bit....

asheridan.jpgI just saw Marty Scorsese! He's gonna win tonight for "The Departed." I know it....Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon are here with one of their kids I think. They are going on 20 years of marriage and seem as tight as ever....Speaking of couples, I spotted Nicollete Sheridan and Michael Bolton getting interviewed. When the HELL are they gonna get married? They've been engaged for about three decades now. Time to get hitched! I also spotted Robert Duvall getting interviewed standing next to Patricia Arquette who is quite beautiful...
avanessa1.jpgI hate to be catty, but Vanessa Williams is here and her hair is huge. It's like Diana Ross on a windy day. It ain't a good thing. I'm a little frightened of that hair. So, I just got hurried along out of the lobby. They leave you alone as long as you keep moving but sheesh, I kept stopping to scribble down a note or two and they busted me!
I'm backstage now and they are inrterviewing Donald Trump! Arrrrrrrg! He is SO overexposed. I'm not sure if he got his hair done or if a squirrell died on his head. Watching on a monitor and eating a piece of cheese now. I see Forrest Whitaker on the monitor looking like a winner...Spielberg is here and oh, there is Jason Lee. I'll bet he wants to shave off that stinkin mustache.
apatricik.jpgMcDreamy is now in the house (sigh). I just spotted Patrick Dempsey. Women and gay men are fainting as he makes his way by. There's nominee Mark Walhberg whose come a long ways from being on a billboard in his underwear.
aleo.jpg Now it's time for the big stars to show up. I see Sean Combs, Justin Timberlake, Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Smith, Naomi Watts. There's Courtney Cox and David Arquette, awe....Cate Blanchett looks stunning. Will Farrell's hair is very big and curly, not unlike the woman from "Extra." OK. Jack Nicholson has just arrived with a really young blonde. I'd think he was a perv buit it's his 16-year-old daughter who is this year's Miss Golden Globe. She is the one who will hand the trophies to the winner.
awill.jpgAs usual, Jada Pinkett Smith is one of the best-dressed women on the red carpet. Emilio Estevez has arrived. He looks three feet tall. Salma Hayek is causing a rukus because she is gorgeous... BRAD and ANGIE!!! They just walked in. They look like perfection. He's all blonde and moviestar like and she is beyond gorgeous. When they are not in Africa, they clean up goooooooood.
Brad is nominated tonight for "Babel" and actually won a Globe ages ago for "12 Monkeys" I think. Jolie, of course, has won a few incluidng one for "Girl...Interrupted."
arenee.jpgaswank.jpgOK, now it's Warren and Annette. Beatty is taking the Cecil B. Demille so we know they are winning something since Annette will likely lose in both her categories. Hillary Swank is here. She's got a flower in her hair. It looks kinds stupid. Joan Rivers is gonna make fun of her as soon as she turns her back.
Beyonce arrives behind Swank, they hug and air kiss. Renee Zellweger was here a minute ago doing her red carpet posing and preening. She's put on a few pounds though, looks better.
Jamie Foxx is here and justgave Sharon Stone a kiss. Sharon looks like an old-fashioned movie star tonight. But why is she hear with Dominick Dunne? I thought she was dating Christian Slater. Those tabloids...
afoxx.jpg
And, even though I didn't see him on the red carpet (did see him backstage), here is a picture of Jamie Foxx arriving because I think he is an absolute fox(x)!!!

Highlights from the Golden Globes...

america1.jpg
I'm kinda wiped out from last night but what a fun time it was. I'm going to cut and paste some of the highlights from the night from the Daily News On the Red Carpet blog which I was contributing to live all night. But if you don't want to scroll through it and re-live it all with me minute-by-minute, here is a truncated version of my very star-studded night from backstage (red carpet sightings in next post!)

Security is intense. I coukdn't even bring a brownie back to the deadline room from the dining room where, I'm not one to name drop, but I was chatting with Harry Smith of the CBS Morning Show. Al Rokker walked by but he was in a big rush. Didn;t even have time to say, "Hey Al, howz the weather." Anyway, i stuck the brownie in my pocket and am snacking on it now.
So...back to the show...
akyra.jpgJeremy Irons won best supporting actor in a TV movie for "Elizabeth I" to go along with the Emmy he won last fall for the role. "This is a nightmare," he says. Says he can't remember anyone's name He is thanking Helen Mirren. Says the movies was ignored in England and didn't get any attention until it was shown in the U.S.
God Bless America...

Best TV Actress drama: KRYA SEDGWICK!!!!! At last. Well-deserved for "The Closer." "It means so much for me. This show has been such an amazing gift....I'm just so grateful for all of it." She thanks "my one and only, my only one, Kevin (Bacon) and my kids."
She's got Kevin Bacon AND a Golden Globe.

astreep1.jpgI'm shameless.
Meryl Streep walked right by me in the interview room after taking questions and I couldn't help but say, "Congratulations." She stopped, turned, smiled and said, "Thank you."
I'd say we had a moment.
Here is some of what Meryl had to say backstage before our little moment:
On being emotional after winning: "I usually have a few drinks before my category comes up - so I was not really settled."
On her speech: "Did I speak for FOUR minutes? I hate people who do that!"
On landing the lead in "Mamma Mia" : "Vocally I'm not afraid but physically, there's a lot of dancing."
On post-show parties: "I hav e a 15 year old with me and I'm going to be watching everything she does."
A suck-up reporter, not me, tells Meryl how young and beautiful she looks. She says: You're so far in the back though!"

ahudson.jpgI was in the interview room when "Babel" won and it was a surreal expeirence. I rushed in and leaned against a wall and noticed that standing three feet away were Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson! I'm wondering what the heck they were doing there as the 'Grey's Anatomy" cast was on stage. Then I notice Eddie Murphy right behind me. He's so small! But he's cool. Very cool. When the producer Larry Marks and director Bill Condon show up, I realize they are there to talk about winning for best picture-musical or comedy.
Jennifer looks a little tired. Beyonce is energized calling it "a beautiful night."

america.jpgNot only has "Ugly Betty" won best comedy series, but its star America Ferrera just won best actress in a comedy series over some heavy-hitters. She was so emotional and natural, choking back tears: "Oh my God! I'm so sorry I'm such a mess right now."
It is lovely to see. she said she is proud "to bring a new face to television...such a beautiful message about beauty being beyond what you see."
She then thanked her her "mommy" who she credits for "everything I've ever accomplished in this life."
Backstage, she said winning "was a very out of body experience...I was amazed to look out and see a roomful of people who I've been so inspired by. To be on that stage and be welcomed by that community...it was really, really wonderful."
She's emotional again and now surrounded backstage by the show's cast including Vanessa Williams with her big Diana Ross hair.
"There are millions and millkions of ugly bettys in our own lives that we love and cherish and we need to stop using that word.," Fererra said. "What we need to be tellihg our future generations is to expore their talents and to explore their intelligence....and truly make this world a better place."

"The Class" has fun at People's Choice...

aclass.jpgI don't think there was any group having more fun last night than the cast of CBS's "The Class" which was named favorite new comedy at the People's Choice Awards. The cast, headed by the adorable Jason Ritter, all seem to genuinely like each other as they did all of their red carpet interviews and picture posing as a group. They also gave each other a chance to talk with no one hogging the spotlight.
ajason2.jpgBut let's face it, Jason is the star and his clowning around backstage reminded me so much of his late father, John Ritter. Anyway, there was a funny moment backstage when Sean Maguire (he plays gay man Kyle Lando on the show) was asked where the absent Christian de la Fuente (who plays his boyfriend Aaron) was. Joked Maguire in his natural British accent: "He's at home with the children where he should be. He's a wonderful man and a wonderful lover!"
My only disappointment was this: where was my favorite character, Perry Pearl? He's the gayest straight man ever and played by the great Sam Harris, an openly gay actor, singer and Broadway star. Sam, we want to see you at these events! You're the best!

A chat w/Shirley Jones

ajones3.jpgCovering the Screen Actors Guild Award nominations this morning, the interview I enjoyed doing the absolute most was chatting on the telephone with surprise nominee Shirley Jones who is beloved for her starring roles in classic musicals "Oklahoma," "The Music Man" and "Carousel." Her dramatic performance in "Hidden Places" got her into exclusive category of best actress in a TV movie or niniseries alongside Helen Miiren and Annette Bening, among others.
I just called information, got her number and rang her up. Husband Marty Ingels answered and was over-the-moon. He is well-known for being quite eccentric but he is his wife's absolute biggest fan and made sure her work was noticed by Hollywood. In addition to the SAG nod, Shirley was also nominated for an Emmy Award last fall.

ajones.jpgDespite her 1960 Oscar win for best supporting actress in "Elmer Gantry," Jones told me she has had trouble breaking free from her wholesome image from her beloved 1970s sitcom``The Partridge Family.''

``It's a nice feeling to know that after all these years, my fellow actors think I have something to say and give to the business,'' she said. ``The hard part for me always was to graduate from Mrs. Patridge to these kinds of roles. It's a big step for producers and directors of today who remember me from the show.''

Her husband Marty believes this is just the beginning for Jones who "will have a second Angela Lansbury kind of career."
Shirley is about as down-to-Earth as they come. She missed the Emmys because she was working (she keeps a full live concert schedule) but hopes to make the SAG ceremony. She is celebrating her nomination today by going to her mountain cabin with her dogs.

ajones2.jpgHere are my thoughts (you knew they were coming): I hope Shirley Jones, who has given us so much wonderful entertainment for so long, gets some really meaty roles as a result of the awards attention she is getting. She is a showbiz survivor, a mother beloeved by her sons and husband, has kept herself out there since the 50s and is still going strong. I hope she goes on forever.

SAG Award nods go to some gay faves

astreep2.jpg
I'm so tired. If I didn't have so much stuff under my desk, I'd probably curl up under it and take a little nap. I had to be at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood by 5:30 a.m. to cover the Screen Actors Guild award nomination. It's a good thing I live close. Woke up at 5:18, said, "Oh shit!" then jumped into the shower, then some clothes then my car and managed to arrive by 5:48 a.m. They let me in anyway for the 6:05 announcements which were aired live. adreamxx.jpgSandra Oh, looking smashing in an Oscar del la Renta knee-length dress, announced the nominations with cute Elijah Wood who was under the weather but kept his promise to be there. Both Oh ("Grey's Anatomy") and Wood ("Bobby") were nominated in the ensemble categories.
To read about all of the nominees, you can click HERE to see it on the Daily News website and see my story. But I'll give you the lowdown here on what I'm personally excited about. For starters: my Effie Jennifer Hudson for "Dreamgirls" in the supporting actress category (Eddie Murphy got a supporting actor nod) then there's the marvelous Meryl Streep who is up for best actress for "The Devil Wears Prada." She won a SAG award maybe three years ago for "Angels in America."
And finally, it's great to see little Abigail Breslin and veteran Alan Arkin nominated for "Little Miss Sunshine" with their relationship one of the best parts of that sweet film.
The entire casts of "Dreamgirls" and "Sunshine" are nominated in the ensemble category including Steve Carell who plays Breslin's gauy uncle in the latter film.
asunny.jpgThe SAG awards go to television projects as well and the real highlight here is the cast of "Ugly Betty" being nominated an America Ferrera getting an individual nomination. It will compete against "Entourage" which has a gay character played by out actor Rex Lee, 'The Office" which has a gay character played by Oscar Martinez, and "Desperate Housewives" which, of course, has kay teen Andrew Van De Kamp (Shawn Pyfrom) who has been criminally underutilized this season.
Out actor T.R. Knight was nominated for best drama ensembvle for playing a straight doctor in "Grey's Anatomy" while the nominated "Deadwood" cast has a lesbian character, Joanie Stubbs, played by Kim Dickens.
Congratulations to all the nominees!

"Dreamgirls" and "Sunshine" get PGA nods....

asunshine3.jpg
Two of my four favorite movies of the year, "Dreamgirls" and "Little Miss Sunshine" received Best Film nominations from the Producers Guild of America Wednesday, a kudofest that offers one of the better previews of Oscar's Best Picture field.
adream2.jpgLast year, four of the five PGA nominees went on to claim a best picture nomination from the Academy. The other nominees are "Babel," "The Departed" and "The Queen."
What a tough year. All are terrific films...
As far as being an indicator of an Oscar victory, the PGA has a .647 average with 11 of its 17 Best Film winners going on to Academy Award glory as Best Picture.

1st Annual Outie Awards (Day Two)

Here are five more winners of Out in Hollywood's first-annual Outie Awards. Tomorrow comes the announcement of this blog's man and woman of the year. i know, I know, the anticipation killing you. But I gotta stretch these things out during a relatively slow news week!

42628_375x375.jpg
MALE MOVIE STAR OF THE YEAR: Daniel Craig! Does this surprise a single reader of this blog? Where has he been all my life? I love this man. (Settle down, I KNOW he's straight, I KNOW I've never met him etc.) Anyway, there are several reasons why I am so enamored with Mr. Craig aside from his very obvious hunkiness. It's not just the body (which is amazing), it's the eyes, the face, how he has a way about him. I'll get to James Bond in a minute because I think Craig's performance as a gay killer in "Infamous" has been criminally overlooked by most critics' groups. He is heartbreaking in the role as one of the killers Truman Capote wrote about in "In Cold Blood" and he shared a jailhouse kiss with the actor playing Capote in the film.
dc20af.jpgThen, there is Bond, James Bond. All the skeptics who said he was too blond, not good looking enough blah, blah, blah. He is, in my opinion, the best Bond yet and that includes Connery, Sean Connery. He was mesmerizing at times, so athletic, charming, sexy, tough, funny and best of all, real. He wasn't a cartoon and he made me a fan of the franchise all over again.

meryl_streep_in_the_devil_w.jpgFEMALE MOVIE STAR OF THE YEAR: Meryl Streep! She didn't play gay this year but she has given gay men everywhere another indelible character to cherish - and some delicious dialogue to re-enact with our friends. That character is magazine editor from hell Miranda Priestly and the movie is "The Devil Wears Prada." As if seeing the movie three times in theaters wasn't enough, I've already seen in on DVD more times than I care to admit. Let's just say I know a lot of the lines, "that's all." As for Meryl, this national treasure, this woman who is the greatest actress of all-time (sorry Katherine Hepburn fans, but she is), she just keeps going and going. And this year as well, she was the best part of "A Prairie Home Companion" which was Robert Altman's final film. She got to sing in that and her scenes with Lily Tomlin were magic. I have this on DVD too.

ColdCase.jpgBEST GAY-THEMED TV EPISODE: The "Forever Blue" episode of the CBS drama "Cold Case." This was an episode that got no real promotion but plenty of reaction - much of it positive. In this "Brokeback Mountain" like same-sex love story, the show's team of present day detectives who work to solve unsolved murder cases, focused on the 1968 murder of a cop named Sean Cooper (Shane Johnson). It first appears that he had been a “dirty? cop on the take from a local drug dealer but it soon become clear that he had been secretly gay and involved in a romantic relationship with his married beat partner Jimmy Bruno (Brian Hallisay, pictured). While "Cold Case" has occasionally had gay-themed episodes - and very good ones - this was notable because it contained a passionate, extended kiss between the two men. Jimmy, in a heartbreaking speech, tells Sean that they are “the lucky ones? because they know true love when most people, gay or straight, never do. The kissing scene was up on YouTube and other sites quickly but ordered down by CBS. Maybe they realize what a nerve they touched and are preparing for a heavily-promoted repeat. We'll see.

alove2.jpgBEST GAY-THEMED MOVIE OF THE YEAR: "A Love to Hide." Set in 1942, this moving and heartbreaking drama is a movie that I recommend every gay person see so you can gain some perspecitve on what incredible lives we have now. Now on DVD, this French-made wartime epic about gay life and love in Nazi-occupied Europe was easily the best movie I saw at last summer's Outfest. In "A Love to Hide," two gay lovers, Philippe (Jeremie Renier) and Jean (Bruno Todeschini), living in Paris hide their love from their families and from the occupying Nazi army. Philippe works with the Resistance while Jean runs his family business, a dry cleaner. When Jean’s childhood sweetheart Sara shows up their door, her family murdered by the Gestapo, they take her in and nurse her back to health, it's still a struggle keeping this ragtag family safe from the Nazis. Jean’s brother is a collaborator and his dad a sympathizer. Tragedy closes in as Jean is accused of being a member of the “third sex? and having an affair with a Nazi officer. It is an important and beautifully-acted film. I cannot recommend it enough or give enough praise to the filmmakers. "A Love to Hide" is released by Picture This! Home Video.

Quinceanera%20-%202%20-%20E.jpg
BEST MOVIE WITH GAY CHARACTERS: "Quinceanera." Winner of both the audience award and the grand jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival, this gem of a movie is set in Echo Park and has been scheduled for DVD release on Jan. 9, 2007. Star Jesse Garcia (pictured above) gives a very natural and believable performance as a gay Latino teen shunned by his family - except for his wonderful octenegarian ucle who takles him in as well as a pregnant 15 year old cousin whose father has disowned her. The gay couple who the uncle rents from in the Echo Park neighborhood seduce Garcia's cxharacter after a party they have at their house on the same property. All is well until one of the men, played by David W. Ross, continues his own affair with the teen. When his partner finds out, he evicts the entire family - including the uncle who has left there for 50 years. This drama, fueled by the racial, class, and sexual tensions of a Latino neighborhood in transition, is damned good. It also stars Emily Rios as the pregnant cousin and Chalo Gonzalez as the wonderful uncle.

1st Annual Outie Awards (Day One)

For the next three days, Out In Hollywood will be handing out the Outies: year-end awards to the best and worst of 2006 as voted on by a jury of three: me, myself and I! OK, so it's not as exciting as next month's Oscar nominations but for the week between Christmas and New Year's, it's SOMETHING!

harris.jpgCLASSIEST COMING OUT EVER: Neil Patrick Harris. The talented television and Broadway star was being pressured by bloggers - mainly the aggressive Perez Hilton - to come out after a publicist mistakenly said that Harris, who had never diuscussed his private life - was NOT gay. To clear matters up, the star of the CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" released the following statement to People.com: “I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love..." Then Harris simply got back to work on his show and also kept his obligations to host a local drama awards gala in L.A. the next week then announced the People's Choice Award nominees after that. He is in a relationship with actor David Burka but they remain low-profile with occassional pictures of them walking their dogs surfacing. This is quite a contrast to the...

lance_bass6.jpgCLUMSIEST COMING OUT OF 06: Sorry Lance Bass, but you struck me as a fading star who had nothing to lose and everything to gain by coming out in the cover of People magazine. I cringed when I read that first interview as Bass described himself and his circle of friends as "Straight Acting Gays" or SAGS. Since then, Bass has not really had anything very profound to say but has certainly been basking in the limelight with boyfriend Reichen Lehmkul at various events around the country. It's the most attention he's received since his days with NSYNC. Lehmkuhl, in discussing how blogger Hilton pushed Bass of the closet by posting photos of the pair wearing each other's clothes on different days, said Bass and Harris had been "lanced." It hasn't caught on. But it is nice to see Bass become more comfortable with being out and about as a gay man and I hope he will eventually have something to say or do some work of note.

2142de59313217e0i3.jpgATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Tennis star Amelie Mauresmo, who has been an openly-gay player on the women's tour for nearly a decade. She may have lost her number one ranking last month to Justine Henin-Hardine, but she beat Justine in the finals of the Australian Open then came from behind to defeat her in the Wimbledon final as well. It was glorious and her speech after the Wimbledon win showed the world just how articulate, charming and thoughtful this beautiful woman is. Winning two of her sports' biggest prizes came after years of talk that Amelie would never live up to her grand potential. But she has done so now and has always remained true to herself along the way. She had a great role model in Martina Navratilova who retired from tennis one month shy of her 50th birthday. And Martina went out a winner as she won the mixed doubles title at the U.S. Open with Bob Bryan.

160_rosie_odonnell2_061221.jpgCOMEBACK OF THE YEAR: Former "Queen of nice" Rosie O'Donnell quit her popular daytime show before she publicly came out and seemed content to do things like raise her four kids with wife Kelli Carpenter O'Donnell, speak out for adoption rights for gay parents and for marriage equality, launch a gay family cruise line, and make the occasional appearance here and there on television or stage. But then came Meredith Viera's departure from "The View" and Barbara Walters' brilliant decision to replace her with the outspoken Rosie (pictured, left, doing her imitation of Donald Trump's combover and face). The show's ratings are up, the hot topics segment often makes news (and gets Rosie in hot water) and Rosie again has a platform to be Rosie - the real Rosie this time, not the Tom Cruise crush Rosie. As a very out lesbian, her presence on this show each day is really helping to change the world and to give a lot of viewers the gay friend they never thought they'd have and really like.

chicagopre.jpgDIRECTOR OF THE YEAR: Bill Condon. "Dreamgirls" is a dream come true and the openly-gay Condon is largely the reason why. He brought this stage show to the screen and made it dazzle. He deserves all credit for directing a newcomer like Jennifer Hudson to such a landmark performance and for allowing Eddie Murphy the opportunity to give the performance of his career. Musicals are always tricky but Condon masterfully pulled this off with his talented cast and crew. What a gift he has given us, a classic musical just like they used to make - one that we'll want to see again and again and again...

Stay tuned for more Outies Thursday and Friday!

Betty Buckley steals the show at Kennedy Center Honors

image2224284.jpg
I happily admit it, I watch the Kennedy Center Honors every year. I love seeing entertainment legends get their due and the talent that comes out to pay tribute is always first-rate.
3688b.jpgI watched an advance screener of the show last night (it will air on CBS on Dec. 26 at 9 p.m.) and I gotta say, the absolute highlight is Betty Buckley belting out "Memory" from "Cats" as part of the tribute to Andrew Lloyd Webber who was honored this year along with Smokey Robinson, Dolly Parton and Steven Spielberg. Buckley's performance was spellbinding, astonishing and absolutely glorious. She was crying. Webber cried. Good God, I cried.
You. Must. See. It.
The mega-talented Buckley, a Tony winner for "Cats," was supposed to play the matriarch on ABC's "Brothers & Sisters" but was replaced by Sally Field after the pilot. I can't see anyone but Sally in the role of Nora Walker but no one but Betty Buckley could have achieved what was achieved on the Kennedy Center stage.
kennedy-center-honors.jpgAs for the other performances, you'll want to see Christine Ebersole's "As If We Never Said Goobdye" and Josh Grobin's "Music of the Night," both part of the Webber tribute. Smokey Robinson, so deserving of this honor, was feted by Aretha Franklin who I love no matter how heavy she gets, how outlandish her clothes or wacky her hair. When it's Aretha, you just sort of have to say, "You are the queen!" She called "Smokey her "oldest and dearest friend" but unfortunately she only sang a bit of "Natural Woman" acapella. The rest of the numbers, including one by the Temptatiions, just seemed a little flat to me - an absolute lover of Motown music.
The Dolly Parton segment, introduced and narrated by a classy Reese Witherspoon, was terrific with performances of several of Parton's songs by Carrie Underwood and a scary looking plastic-surgery-gone-wrong Kenny Rogers ("Islands in the Stream," a lovely "Jolene" by Allison Krauss, a just O.K. "Coat of Many Colors" by Shania Twain and a real to-be-treasured "I Will Always Love You" by Vince Gill. Apparently Jessica Simpson screwed up her performance of "9 to 5" so we don't see it or her which is just as well. She didn't belong on that stage with the caliber of talent assembled on that night.
The Parton segment made you really respect Dolly the artist as a top-notch songwriter and performer. She a lot more than boobs and hair. Her warmth and gratitude from where she was seated in the audience was projected so nicely down to the stage. She loved her tribute - you could tell.
If you're home eating leftover Christmas fudge, watch this show! If not, set the VCR (if you still have one) or TiVo. You'll know what I'm talking about.

Another Globe nod for magic Meryl

Meryl Streep may only have two Oscars (criminal!) but she has had 14 nominations overall. Her record is slightly better at the Golden Globes where she have won five trophies and this morning, received her TWENTY-FIRST nomination for her performance in "The Devil Wears Prada." The first was for 1979's "The Deer Hiunter" and the first win came a year later for "Kramer vs. Kramer."
ameryl3.jpg In between her first and most recent nods, there were wins for "Angels in America," "Adaptation," "Sophie's Choice" and "The French Leuitenant's Woman" and nominations for "The Mancharian Candidate," "The Hours," "One True Thing," "Music of the Heart," "Marvin's Room," "The Bridges of Madison County," "Postcards from the Edge," "Ironweed," "A Cry in the Dark," "Out of Africa," "Silkwood," the comedies "She Devil" and "Death Becomes Her" and the TV movie "First Do No Harm..."

I happen to think Meryl Streep can walk on water and I am grateful to her for all of the performances over the years that have made me laugh and cry. My faves are "Prada," "Postcards," Adaptation" and "One True Thing" which I think was more Oscar-worthy than the uneven performance given by Helen Hunt that year when she won for "As Good as it Gets." I also think Streep shoulda won for "Africa" or "Bridges."

What a body of work.

Golden Globe noms of gay interest...

globes2.jpgFirst of all, I've been up already for nearly five hours. I have just enough adrenaline to make it to maybe noon then I gotta have a nap or I'll go INSANE! Why was I up so early you ask? To cover the Golden Globe Award nominations LIVE from the Beverly Hilton Hotel where we had to be by 4:30 PST. To read my early morning ramblings from there, please click On the Red Carpet, one of the Daily News' sister blogs to Out in Hollywood that I will be contributing to frequently during awards season. I've been obsessed with awards shows since I was a kid: "Mommy, can we watch the Oscars tonight?" So to be getting a front-row seat and backstage pass for all of this is a kick!

dreamgirlspubc.jpgAnywho, some of my personal faves made the cut even though Daniel Craig was not one of them. I was hoping he'd get a supporting actor nod for "Infamous" but didn't happen. That category is overflowing with star power with Brad Pitt (Babel), Ben Affleck (Hollywoodland), Jack Nicholson (The Departed), Mark Whalberg (The Departed) and...Eddie Murphy for "Dreamgirls." I think Eddie will and should win. It's the performance of his career.

So, for this "Dreamgirls" obsessed blogger, I'm happy to see the film get four other nominations including best picture (musical or comedy), best actress in a musical or comedy (Beyonce Knowles), best supporting actress (Jennifer Hudson) and best song (Listen).

aparada.jpgI was hoping "Little Miss Suinshine" would do better buit am thrilled to see the always-terrific Toni Collette nominated for best actress in a comedy or musical and the film itself nominated for best picture - comedy or musical. But Collette will lose to my absolute fave, Meryl Streep, up for her delicious role in "The Devil Wears Prada" whicxh got three nominations overall. In addition to Streep, who already has xx Golden Globe trophies, the movie itself is up for best picture- comedy or drama, and the hilarious Emily Blunt got a well-deserved nod in the supporting actress category. My friend Eddie and I were doing lines from "Prada" in Palm Springs over the weekend and the one that really cracked us up was uttered by Blunt when she is in the hospital after getting hit by a car and says to Anne Hathaway's character (who gets to go to Paris instead of her): "You eat CARBS!"

So, three of my four favorite movies of the year will bve competing against each other for best picture - musical or comedy. I gotta think "Dreamgirls" will beat back "Sunshine" and "Pradea" but all are deserving. My fourth fave, "Casino Royale," got zippo moms. WhatEVER.

apaulson.jpgSo let's talk TV. How about that Sarah Paulson? YES!!! The beautiful and out actress who lights up "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" was nominated for best television supporting actress. Maybe she will win a Globe to put on the mantle alongside to two Tony Awards won by her partner, Cherry Jones. She's up against double nominees Blunt ("Gideon's Daughter) and Collette ("Tsunazmi, The Aftermath") as well as "Grey's Anatomy" star Katherine Heigl. But who do I think should win? There is not a better comic performance on television than the one Elizabeth Perkins turns in each week on ":Weeds."

I know that Hugh Laurie is terrific on "House" but so are the four other nominees for best television actor -drama and all are a lot hotter! (a shallow comment from a sleep-deprived gay man). But c'mon, Patrick Dempsey, Michael C. Hall, Bill Paxton AND Kiefer Sutherland ALL in the same category. That is almost too much handsome man for me. And, they are all wonderfully talented, of course.

Broadcast Critics Award noms include gay faves...

dreamgirls22.jpgI'll be covering the Golden Globe nominations live Thursday morning at 6 a.m. on the Daily News blog "On the Red Carpet" which you can connect to through DailyNews.com. I'll just be letting it fly as the nominees are announced.
Should be fun! The trick is waking up on time.
But until then, I'd like to share my thoughts on the Broadcast Film Critics award nominations announced today because two of my favorite movies all year, "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Dreamgirls" received seven nominations each including a nod for top feature!
asunshine.jpgAlthough Steve Carell's performance as a depressed gay man in "Sunshine" didn't make the cut, the entire cast was nominated for best ensemble, Alan Arkin for supporting actor, Paul Dano for young actor and the amazing Abigail Breslin for young actress. "Sunshine" also was nominated for comedy movie and writer (Michael Arndt).
DevilWearsPradaMerylStreep2.jpgGay fave Meryl Streep received a best actress nod for "The Devil Wears Prada" which, ya gotta know by now is my other favorite movie of 2006 (completing my top four, in no particular order, is "Casino Royale). "Prada" also is competing for comedy movie honors.
I'm also happy to see that Robert Altman's final film, "A Prairie Home Companion" was nominated for best acting ensemble because the cast not only includes Streep but also out performing legend Lily Tomlin as her sister and their scenes together were magic. And good grief, can Meryl sing! Fans of hers have known this ever since we heard her sing "You Don't Know Me" and "Heartbreak Hotel" in "Postcards From the Edge." Is there anything this amazing actress (egregiously overlooked at the Oscars so many times) cannot do?
across.jpgOther gay connections: In the young actor category, Joseph Cross (left) was nominated for his performance as a gay teen in "Running With Scissors," out singing star Melissa Etheridge is nominated for best song for her "I Need to Wake Up" from "An Inconvenient Truth," and foreign language film nominee "Volver" was directed by openly gay director Pedro Almodovar.
As for "Dreamgirls," its gay director Bill Condon received a nod as did Eddie Murphy (supporting actor), Jennifer Hudson (supporting actress), acting ensemble, and original song ("Listen" by Beyonce).

Ribbon of Hope honorees are well-deserving...

yesterday.jpgLast night's Ribbon of Hope Celebration 2006 started off much like many other award events with red carpet intervews, a pre-show VIP party, hellos and hugs. But after settling into my seat at the Television Academy Theater, the heaviness of the reason why we were all there took over. In addition to honoring actress/activist Judith Light, several television projects were recognized as responsible programming that educated and raised public awareness of this devastating epedemic for which there remains no cure - treatement yes, if you can afford it. But no cure.
The HBO film "Yesterday," sanctioned by Nelson Mandela and the Nelson Mandela Foundation, follows the struggles of a young mother who has been diagnosed with AIDS and wants to live long enough to send her daughter to her first day of school. The film is set in South Africa, 10 years after democracy arrived there. "the husband brought AIDS into the family and his reaction was to beat [her] to a pulp," actress CCH Pounder told the hushed audience after a clip of the film. "You really must see this film to understand its impact. This is...programming at its best."
1.jpgActer Peter Gallagher introduced the Cinemax documentary "Orphans of Nkandla" in which directors Brian Weeds and Deborah Shipley travel to the village of Kkandla in rural Zululand, South Africa where boys and girls share a common burden of having one or both of their parents die of AIDS. This leaves the older kids, as young as 12 years old, left to take care of younger siblings. "It breaks your heart," Gallagher said. The hero of the piece is Sister Hedwick, a nun who works at a local hospital whose mission is to locate and assist children from these devastated homesteads.
mccullough.jpg"General Hospital"Shifting the focus to AIDS in America, the long-running daytime drama "General Hospital" was recognized for its continuation of an AIDS storyline surrounding Robin Scorpio (portrayed by Kimberly McCullough, left) was was infected as a teenager by a boyfriend she loved. Robin is the portrait of a survivor who grew up to become a research pathologist but she still faces the everyday struggles of living with HIV. The AIDS storyline this year involves Robin's new love, Dr. Patrick Drake, who is exposed to HIV after cutting his finger while operating on a patient with AIDS. "We made a promise that we weren't going to let this storyline go away," GH writer Karen Harris said when she accepted the award. "Whatever Patrick's results are, we will continue to explore this subject. It is my hope that Robin will continue to live a full and joyous life."
The-L-Word.jpgShowtime's "The L Word" was selected to receive Ribbon of Hope's first honor outside the area of HIV and AIDS for its storyline on breast cancer during its third season. It followed the wrenching journey of Dana Fairbanks (Erin Daniels) from the discovery of a lump to her death from an opportunistic infection contrracted when chemotherapy weakens her immune system. "Lesbians have been virtually unrepresented in the popular culture," said Ilene Chaiken, the series' creator and executive producer. "It's a privledge to be taking part in television that makes a difference."
abc-news-aids-special.jpgShortly before his cancer diagnosis, Peter Jennings started work on a one-hour documentary devoted solely to the issue of AIDS in Black America. Black Americans make up 13 percent of the U.S. population but account for over 50 percent of all new cases of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. That infection rate is eight times the rate of whites. Among women, the numbers are even more shocking—- almost 70 percent of all newly diagnosed HIV-positive women in the United States are black women. Black women are 23 times more likely to be diagnosed with AIDS than white women, with heterosexual contact being the overwhelming method of infection in black America. The hour includes tough interviews with the likes of Jesse Jackson and a very telling interview moment from the 2004 vice presidential debate when moderator Gwen Ifil exposed Dick Cheney's absolute lack of awareness on the subject.
jennings2_200.jpgABC's Terry Moran, who completed the work for Jennings, made some comments on his behalf: "He had a natural confidence that good journalism could make a difference. I know that Peter would be honored by this award - I am as well."
Also honored was the program "Frontline: The Age of AIDS on PBS which on the 25th anniversary of the pandemic, examines why humanity has failed to stop the spread of HIV.

Judith Light feted at Ribbon of Hope Celebration 2006

Just got back from the 10th annual Ribbon of Hope Celebration honoring people in television who have contributed to responsible programming with regards to educating and raising public awareness of AIDS. It was a heart-warming, star-studded night. But I'll write about the dish in another post because this one is reserved for Judith Light, the star who shined the brightest at the Television of Television Arts and Sciences theater Thursday evening.

JudithLight.jpg Judith received the evening's only standing ovation and it was heartfelt and filled with love for a woman who has more than done her share, for decades, in the battle against AIDS. Before the show began, I chatted with the two-time Emmy winner ("One Life to Live") and beloved star of the long-running sitcom "Who's the Boss?" who currently has a recurring role on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."

On how she became an AIDS activist:
"I was always connected to the gay community, I grew up in theater and that's synonymous with the gay community. So all of my good friends who always supported me and were always wonderful to me were out of the gay community. So when AIDS started, I really felt it was important for me to start looking at this and say, 'What a minute. My friends are dying, they need help. Someone's got to be talking about this. This isn't politically correct but i gotta get out there. I did it to support my friends."

AIDS.jpg"You can't live in a country where you tell everybody you're compassionate and you love everybody and then treat the gay community like they don't exist and let them die. You cannot do it. I mean, you're doing it but I'm going to tell you that it's absolutely unconscionable. So I began to see how much homophobia was really layered underneath this AIDS crisis and why people weren't talking about it. You know that if this was a good ol' white boys disease, they would've been on it in a heartbeat. I'm not saying that we shouldn't take care of everybody but the point is, it was purposeful. People may say, 'Oh no, people would never really do that.' But whether it's conscious or unconscious, that was what was happening and I just didn't want to see that happening to people who I knew and loved."

Among the 15 television movies Light has starred in is "the Ryan White Story" and her AIDS-related advocacy includes representing Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS, The Names Project, AIDS Memorial Quilt, Project Angel Food, The Point Foundation, the Trevor Project, and The AIDS Memorial Grove, among others.

On being honored with the Ribbon of Hope:
"It's really kind of amazing. I do the work because it's the work and then somebody comes along and says, 'We want to give this to you.' And I'm here and I'm happy to be here."

Light was presented her award by Bruce Vilanch who called his friend "an incredible humanitarian on so many levels. She is a television icon who has made herself visible from the very beginning for a cause that no one wanted to be associated with. This never got in her way."

Chad Allen, who stars opposite and produces the gay-themed indie film "Save Me" with Light and Robert Gant, also gave a shout out to his friend when he was on stage presenting another award: "Judith Light, thank you. You are like family to me and I'm so proud to say that. I love you."

Daniel Craig gets Indie Spirits Award nod for Infamous

infamous.jpgThis seems to be a big day, week and month for Daniel Craig news and I am only too happy to share all of it with you. The new James Bond has been nominated for a Film Independent's Spirit Award in the best supporting actor category for his fine performance as a cold-blooded killer who happens to be gay in the Truman Capote biopic "Infamous." As a blond and buff Craig dazzles the world as Agent 007, it's nice to see him recognized for this smaller film which has suffered by coming out a year after "Capote," a film with an identical storyline. But the film is solid and Craig's performance as one of the killers Capote writes about in his novel "In Cold Blood" and seems to fall in love with is not to be missed.

carell.jpgLeading the pack in Independent Spirit nominations is one of my favorite films of the year, "Little Miss Sunshine" which earned five nods including best picture. Even though Steve Carrell, who played a suicidal gay man in the film, did ot receive an individual nod, his co-stars Alan Arkin Paul Dano did. Also nominated were co-directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris and screenwriter Michael Arndt. This movie gem about a dysfunctional family on a road trip is out on DVD Dec. 19 with many bonus features ncluding four alternate endings, audio commentaries, music video and more.

Echopark.jpgAnd here is a well-deserved Indie Spirit nomination: up for the John Cassavetes Award, given to the best feature made for less than $500,000 are out filmmakers and real-life couple Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland for "Quniceanera." Their film has several key gay characters and won both the grand jury prize and the audience award at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

Finally, up for the IFC/Acura Someone to Watch Awards, which includes a grant of $50,000 to a new filmmaker, is Richard Wong who directed the terrific "Colma: The Musical" which screened at the Outfest Film Festival in Los Angeles last summer.

Congratulations to all!

A cool night at the American Music Awards...

beyonce2.jpgMy American Music Awards experience was pretty fun. Here is a link to take you to the Daily News blog On Red Carpet site where I was posting last night from backstage along with our music critic Fred Shuster. Best thing abvout the AMAs: no tuxedo required! I'm tired of going to all these kudofests dressed like a penguin.

The red carpet was so funny as I stood in front of two TV gals from the UK who didn't know who ANYONE was. I assume they just filmed EVERYONE and would figure it all out later. But they were quite fun. The reporters from US and People were quite nice despite my making fun of their silly questions. And once I got back to the press tent, there was some yummy pasta that was actually still hot! And you know how I feel about free food.

So, here are my award winners for the night, we'll call them the OUTIES::
BEST SCOOP: Getting Isaiah Washington to come over and chat about the T.R. Knight controversy even as his publicist was having a stroke! Click HERE to read the interview.
amcphee.jpgSTARSTRUCK MOMENT: I've met many stars and am usually Mr. Cool but once in awhile, when I do not expect it, I just get weak in the knees lkind of starstruck. It happened three years ago when I met Jaclyn Smith at the premiere of "Charlie's Angels" and again last night when I turned around and there was the stunning Katherine McPhee. I actually said: "Oh my God! It's YOU!" Real professional, real cool. That's me.
HOT (female division): Beyonce! (flawless), Carrie Underwood (a princess) and Katherine McPhee (looked like a model).

hicks.jpgHOT (male division): Taylor Hicks! (Not kidding! He is not the same man he was on the show. He's slim, good haircut, cool threads), Mario Lopez (could he look bad?), Tyrese Gibson (sexy!) and Jamie Foxx (what. a. fox.)
hilton.jpgANNOYING: Britney Spears (why is she celebrated for leaving her loser second husband, losing baby weight and cutting her hair?) and Paris Hilton (To quote Nancy Reagan: "Who does this dame think she is?").

grobin.jpgcyrus.jpgSWEETEST: Josh Grobin (I just wanted to hug him, then give him a haircut!), the Cheetah Girls (Never heard of 'em but they were a lotta fun) and Billy Ray Cyrus (absolute gentleman. such a proud dad).

After the show ended, I got lost looking for the shuttle outside the Shrine Auditorium that was to take me back to the Coliseum parking lot. I'm not allowed into things like the "Entertainment Tonigfht" tent ot the Dick Clark Hospitality Tent but the press pass dangling around my neck apparently gives me license to wander around outside all these tents. I soon realize this is celeb spying paydirt!
>foxx.jpgThere's Jamie Foxx with his family having a group hug. Carrie Underwood approaches Jamie to say hello. Photos were snapped and they went their separate ways. Suddenly I'm struck in this big crowd but it's OK because I'm standing next to Tyrese Gibson. Wow! I think I'll stand here awhile. And finally, William Shatner and his wife are waiting for a shuttle or a limo (probably a limo, he has TWO shows on ABC now!) And finally, there's Isaiah Washington, walking out in good spirits, along with his wife and his now-relaxed publicist. I leave them alone.

It has been a good night.

My Night at the Emmys...

emmy.jpg
I felt like I was cheating on "Out In Hollywood" but I was blogging for another Daily News site last night at the Emmy Awards: "On the Red Carpet." So check out some of my catty comments about Joan Collins, Barry Manilow and the queen of stupid questions, Nancy O'Dell of "Access Hollywood." Please forgive the typos, I was going a mile a minute. Here is the link to On the Red Carpet.

mariska2.jpg
I'll just add this: I thought Mariska Hargitay looked gorgeous and was the happiest winner backstage. She just had her first baby at 42 and now has her first Emmy. I profiled her for a magazine piece earlier this year and she's one of the most down-to-earth actresses in television. Also, Kiefer Sutherland was very humble and handsome. He just gets better and better. The award for most boooooring backstage interview went ot Jeremy Irons who lamented that there were 90 channels on his TV at the hotel and he couldn't find anything to watch. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Now I can say I've completed the awards cycle for 2006. Worked the Emmy Awards Sunday night in a year that also included either red carpet or backstage stints at the Oscars, Golden Globes, People's Choice, SAG Awards, MTV Movie Awards, GLAAD Awards, the AFI Awards, and the non-televised but star-studded WGA, PGA and DGA awards. It's been a blast!

Heaven at the Emmys: Farrah, Kate and Jaclyn...

angels.jpg

Let's face it, whatever else happened on last night's Emmy's show, gay men everywhere died and went to heaven when Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith and Farrah Fawcett came walking onto that stage, holding hands, to pay tribute to Aaron Spelling. First of all, did they look great or WHAT? Good God!

Kate was stoic and spoke beautifully while neither Farrah or Jaclyn could get through their remarks without tears. I noticed that when the three angels were on stage, the audience was focused completely on them, none of this looking around or looking bored. It was a big deal and it rescued a tribute that had been caught up in the Tori vs. Candy feud.

Only Jaclyn Smith came backstage to greet the press but she was indeed enough, so classy, so gorgeous. She told us about being with the girls again:

cangels_70.jpg
"It's flattering that the show is still talked about 30 years later and I think Aaron Spelling is responsible for that. We do see each other from time to time. It was fun to hold hands and walk out on that stage as though time had stopped. It's 30 years (since the show premierd) so it's kind of awesome...We were sort of like rock stars overnight. There were just the three major networks, no cable, so the show went into so many homes. It was fun to share it with the other girls, that's why Charlie's Angels was a success: the comraderie of the girls. It was about friendship."

Leslie Jordan Wins the Emmy!

leslie_jordan_2.jpg

How great is this? The wonderful Leslie Jordan, best known for his role in the film and stage versions of "Sordid Lives" won an Emmy over the weekend for his hilarious portrayal of Beverley Leslie on "Will & Grace." His flithy rich, bitchy and once comically closeted character graced 12 episodes of the series and is most noteable for his running fued with boozy, pill-popping Karen Walker (Megan Mullally). Unfortunately, in the series finale, the 4-foot, 11-inch Jordan literally blew out of a window to his demise just as he had found happiness with Jack (Sean Hayes).

After receiving the Emmy Jordan said: "I loved working with on "Will & Grace," they trotted me out like an aging show pony."

As the winner of "Guest Actor in a Comedy Series," the openly-gay Jordan will be a presenter, along with "Guest Actress" winner Cloris Leachman, at Sunday night's Emmy telecast. I'll be on the red carpet and hope to flag him down for a quick hello. This time, I won't make the same mistake as at last year's GLAAD Awards when I said, "Of all your roles, I loved the one you did on "Designing Women" as Suzanne's (Delta Burke) crooked accountant, Reggie Mac Dawson." Insert foot in mouth: Jordan didn't play that role, Danny Thomason did.

But he had a great sense of humor about it, said it happened to him all the time. BTW, he and the great Delta Burke, who appeared together this year in LA productions of "Sordid Lives" and "Southern Baptist Sissies," are now touring with "Sissies" through the fall.
