Box Office: February 2007 Archives

It took much longer than anyone thought it would but "Dreamgirls," my favorite musical since "Grease," surpassed the $100 million in domestic grosses on Monday. The film, up for eight Oscars on Sunday, had $1.96 million in ticket sales over the four-day President's Day weekend and that was just enough to nudge it over this industry benchmark.
With Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson heavily favored to win in the supporting categories, my guess is the movie could enjoy a post-Oscar boost at the box office.

Obviously, missing out on a best picture Oscar nomination has slowed its box office momentum some but "Dreamgirls" is still the most successful Hollywood musical since "Chicago." The film, which received 8 Oscar nods (three in the best song category) was the number seven movie at the box office over the weekend earning $4 million. That gives it a domestic total of $92.8 million and the film is a sure-bet to at least crack $100 million.
Meanwhile, I'm heading out for a few hours to cover to Oscar nominees luncheon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. I will have highlights for you later in the afternoon.
