Gay Marriage: July 2008 Archives
Congratulations to San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. The handsome gay marriage proponent tied the knot with actress/producer Jennifer Siebel on Saturday night. She has a recurring role on the NBC series "Life"
People.com reports that the guests at the wedding included Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and her husband Paul, former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, former eBay president Jeff Skoll, Sex and the City star Jason Lewis and Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page.
This is very encouraging: Californians are likely to support same-sex marriage in the coming November election, suggests to an opinion poll released Friday. November is still a long ways away but I hope with all my heart that these numbers hold up on election day.
The Wall Street Journal writes: According to the Field Poll, 51% of California voters surveyed said they would oppose Proposition 8, a ballot measure that would amend the state constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman, thus banning same-sex marriage. Forty-one percent of voters surveyed said they would vote "yes" on the measure, according to the statewide survey that was completed this week.
Those results are nearly identical to findings of a Field Poll in May that found 51% of Californian voters surveyed approved of allowing gay couples to marry, while 42% disapproved.
In May, California's Supreme Court struck down a ban on same-sex marriage as unconstitutional, allowing gay marriages to become legal starting June 17. Opposition groups put an initiative banning same-sex marriage on the November ballot. The measure would need a simple majority to become law.
The San Francisco Bay Area showed the strongest opposition to Prop. 8, with 67% of voters surveyed there opposing the proposition and 26% supporting it, according to the new survey. Los Angeles County voters also opposed the measure, 51% to 41%.
This bombshell is being reported on EW.com's The Ausiello Files: Producers of the very funny CBS sitcom "The New Adventures of Old Christine" are taking advantage of California's new gay marriage law by marrying off leading lady Julia Louis Dreyfuss to another woman. And not just any woman -- Wanda Sykes'' Barb!
Ausiello does not provide any more info (I don't think either character is a lesbian!) and writes: "What? Why? When? Where? All good questions. And in time, I will answer them. But for now, just take a moment to relish the thought of Christine and Barb vowing to love, honor and obey each other for the rest of their lives!"
Jason Warner and deMarco DeCiccio, the openly gay, inspirational/spiritual pop music duo known as Jason & deMarco, are getting married.
Here's what Jason wrote on thei MySpace page:
deMarco Proposed Tonight - and I said Yes!!! Tonight was perhaps one of the most special nights of my life.
deMarco proposed over a beautiful candlelight dinner tonight as we near our 7th year anniversary this Friday. We've been waiting for gay marriage to be legal, and in CA, it now is.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!

It's no surprise but still makes me sick.
The Advocate.com is exclusively reporting that John McCain has officially changed his position on California's marriage amendment from neutral to endorsing the efforts to prohibit gay marriage.
This is according to a statement by the Log Cabin Republicans who, I would think, gotta feel pretty crummy about a gay Republican today.. There had been a statement released last week froim the pro ballot measure group that McCain was now with them. Log Cabin folks released a statement today "Late last week, the group pushing California's anti-marriage constitutional amendment released an email from a McCain staffer saying the Senator backed the amendment. We now have confirmation that this represents the Senator's view."
Log Cabin Republican President Patrick Sammon said in a statement: "Unfortunately, his position on this amendment hurts gay and lesbian families. We obviously disagree with Senator McCain on this issue and do not believe he should have interjected himself into this state issue," Sammon said in the release. "Backing California's ban sends the wrong signal to the independents who will decide this election because it creates the impression that he's pandering to social conservative leaders."
