Heartthrobs: June 2007 Archives

Christian Bale has THE most handsome face in the history of movies. What's more, he's a wonderful actor and has been since making his debut as a kid in such films as "Empire of the Sun" and "Newsies" to the grown up movies I like him so much in including "American Psycho," "The Prestige" and "Batman Begins." I thought "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" was kind of a snooze but you do get to see quite a bit of his derriere! Even more in his favor: he played gay in the bizarre but intriguing "Velvet Goldmine." This week, Bale showed up at the premiere of his latest movie, "Rescue Dawn" which dares to go up against "Transformers" over the July 4 weekend.

I admit, I lifted that headline from Towleroad.com. It was so good, I could not improve upon it so didn't even try. Anywho, my postings this morning have been so political that I'm breaking the pattern with some lovely pictures of the oh-so-buff Mark Wahlberg going through airport security.

I'm just crazy about Brad Pitt these days. I think it's all those pics of him with his kids...just makes him even sexier. Snagged these pics off of JustJared.com of Brad filming another commercial in Prague, Czech Republic, for Japanese cell phone company Softbank, as directed by Wong Kar Wai (My Blueberry Nights). Bbillboards of Brad will be all over Japan soon enough with commercials hitting the tubes over there shortly thereafter. As for Americans, we'll have to catch it on YouTube.

Got an invite to an advance screening of "Transformers" for later this week and rsvp'd yes. But I did so half-heartedly since if wasn't really on my radar in terms of movies I'm really excited about seeing this summer, not like say, the next "Harry Potter." But then I realized one of the stars of the film is the dashing Josh Duhamel, one of the most handsome leading men in TV ("Las Vegas") who, thankfully, has not been overexposed despite his high-profile relationship with the singer Fergie. Kennethinthe212 has posted some of the picture of Josh that appear in the new issue of Best Life Magazine. All I can say it, "Bring on 'Transformers'!"

It's nice to see that some bro-mances go the distance. I mean, I haven't seen McConaughey and Armstrong together in ages. But childhood buds Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are as close as ever as they vacation in Hawaii with their respective wives and daughters.
On the one hand, I think it's too bad these guys can't do a little surfing (from pics, they both seem to suck at it) without the paprazzi recording their every wipe-out. But on the other hand, the images of them together are just so sweet.

I just love Rafael Nadal in white, don't you? Such a nice contrast to his dark, tanned muscular arms and legs. I also like that he's wearing the shorter shorts instead of the capri pants during this grass-court exhibition he played (and lost) to fellow Spanish hunk Carlos Moya who is his sometimes doubles partner and close friend. I urge you to read Deuce! for my Wimbledon predictions. On the MEN'S side, I see good things for Andy Roddick although Roger Federer is the favorite while I predict Serena Williams will dominate the WOMEN'S field.
Wimbledon starts on Monday and tennis fans around the world just can't wait!

US Navy Lt Andy Baldwin gets his morning coffee fix Thursday in Oahu, Hawaii. He's wearing a shirt, which is aa pity since he and Matthew McConaughey usually have the same taste in shirts...NOT WEARING ONE! JustJared.com reports that Andy served as a volunteer on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Watch for his guest appearance on the show, which is set to air on September 23. Andy seems to be embracing the limelight which is nice because he is a man I do not mind seeing...a lot!

After more than a week of virtually no comments posted to Out In Hollywood, I am reverting back to the old policy of not having to register to leave a post! I'll just deal with the spammers another way because I miss hearing from you all. So let's get writing again! My friend Henry was watching some classic tennis matches from the 80s recently and bemoaned the fact that the male tennis stars no longer wear those tight short shorts that looked so good on Pat Cash, Boris Becker and especially Stefan Edberg (pictured above). Edberg had the best legs in the game (Henry prefered Boris) and I just gotta figure if he wore the clothes of today, we would not have been treated to such beauty as we watched the beautiful blonde Swede serve and volley his way to two Wimbledons, two U.S. Opens and two Austrialian Opens. But all is not lost. In some of the photos below, you can see that while the guys are covering up their legs these days with those long shorts, they have been showing their biceps in recent years with these sleeveless shirts that are worn Rafael Nadal, Carlos Moya, Lleyton Hewitt and others. Below is American Michael Russel who is seen playing in Nottingham on Tuesday. He lost to Tim Henman but hey, nice guns.

Thanks to AfterElton.com, I have some highlights from an attitude the beautiful and talented John Barrowman gave to Attitudes magazine a few months ago.
On realizing he was gay: "I knew I was gay when was I eight years old and found some magazine my brother had, like Hustler or something, and I just kept looking at the men and not the women. From then on when I heard the kids say "Faggot" I knew that I was one of those."

His first crush: "My first crush was on my best friend Mike Molina. We used to do everything together. I'd spend the afternoon doing sports with him, then I'd go and play Barbie dolls with my friend Laura. ...I remember copping a peek at him but I would never have dreamed of making a move on him."

His first boyfriend: "I didn't have a boyfriend until I was in London and in the show "Matador." His name was Paco Perez-Arevelo and he played the front of the bull. [Laughs] And he was who I lost my virginity to also. ... One day I got call from my dresser John saying that Marilyn, my girlfriend from America, was waiting at the theatre for me and to be aware if Paco was with me. I panicked and didn't know what to do. I went to Stefanie Powers...and I asked her advice, so she was the first person I ever actually came out to. She said, "Honey, if you want I'll cover for you. You can say you're having an affair with me if you have to, but you also have the option of being a man and telling her the truth." So that's what I did."

I know I posted a picture of them just yesterday but it's so nice to see Matt Damon and Ben Affleck hanging out together, these best buds who triumphed with "Good Will Hunting" almost 10 years ago. They are both now married men with children and a lot has happened between then and now. Ben went big budget in "Pearl Harbor," "The Sum of All Fears" and "Daredevil" and had that whole JLo era while Matt has mixed the "Ocean's" and "Bourne" franchises with artsy fare like "Gerry" and dramatic roles in "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and "The Departed." He also dated Winona Ryder and Minnie Driver along the way.
But what has never changed is their friendship...and their hotness!

I'm obviously not going to quibble with People Magazine selecting Matthew McConaughey as its hottest bachelor and featuring him shirtless and splashing in the water on its cover. I blogged about the inclusion in the issue of such hotties as Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Evans, Ryan Reynolds, Gerard Butler and Maksim Chmerkovskiy - all of whom I have posted pics of over the months.
But here's my issue with People Magazine: If you can proudly display Lance Bass on your cover with the headline "I'm Gay," why can't you include him and other single gay celebrities prominantly in the bachelor issue? T.R. Knight is single and every bit as cute as Zach Braff who you DO feature. I'm not sure if Robert Gant is single but surely he is more handsome than a lot of the guys featured. What about Kyan from "Queer Eye" or Nate Berkis? John Amaechi? J.P. Calderon?
I'm wondering, did the magazine even TRY to be inclusive?
The gayest they get, from what I can see, is including aa driver's license sized picture ofout actor Rex Lee ("Entourage") amid 19 other pictures of other men under the headline "Funny Guys Tell Us Their Funniest Words." For the record, Rex's word is "Shrimp."
Umm, OK.
Now there are a few actors in the magazine who have been widely-rumored to be gay and I understand that People would not out them (that's the job of Perez Hilton and, apparently, Out Magazine) but why even include them when it is clear they are playing the PR game.
Anyway, the best People could do was include some actors who have at least played gay at one time or another in their career: Hugh Grant ("Maurice"), Ryan Carnes ("Desperate Housewives," "Eating Out"), Jason Ritter ("Happy Endings"), Ryan Phillippe ("One Life to Live"), Jesse Bradford ("Heights"), Gael Garcia Bernal ("Bad Education"), Joseph Fiennes ("Running With Scissors"), Michael Vartan ("The Next Best Thing"), John Stamos ("Wedding Wars"), Braff ("The Broken Hearts Club") and, of course, Gyllenhaal in "Brokeback Mountain."
This is 2007, famous gay men are all around and many are single. They are hot bachelors. People magazine, take a cue from MTV and start getting REAL!

The original Hollywood bro-mance is back on! Matt Damon and Ben Affleck spent some time together in Hawaii over the weekend. But there were others along: their wives and daughters! The Oscar-winning friends (the won for co-writing "Good Will Hunting") have stayed close and both are experiencing good times professionally. Matt is riding high with "Ocean's 13" and has "the Bourne Ultimatum" out in August while Ben ended his string of poorly-received films with raves for his performance in "Hollywoodland."
Good guys...

I was gabbing with my pal Trevor on the phone tonight as I surfed my favorite sites looking to see if there was anything I wanted to share with the readers of "Out In Hollywood." One of my regular stops is Kennethinthe212.com which always has lotsa goodies. I came upon these pics that Kenneth had posted of Brady Quinn. "Trevor! Are you online? You gotta go to this site!" I guess Trevor doesn't watch much football. He's like "Brady who?" But he could see why I admire him so. (For his football ability, of course! Sheesh!)

How better than to start your Monday morning with this image of Jake Gyllenhaal, the talented actor who seems to get better all the time. Of course, we love him for his Oscar-nominated performance in "Brokeback Mountain," but also for how he handles all the attention that continues to come his way with such grace. He seems to have been raised right...

And you thought pasta was the tastiest dish in Italy? Not today! The beautiful man that is Eric Bana is in Rome (he's doing a photo call here outside the St. Regis Hotel) promoting his poker flick "Lucky Loser" which absolutely tanked in the U.S. His co-star, Drew Barrymore, didn't bother making the trip but I think Eric radiates enough star power for the two of them!

Not only does Chris Evans have a big movie coming out on Friday, "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" (he is pictured above w/castmates at the premiere this week), but TODAY is his 26th birthday! What better excuses do we need to post a little gallery of pictures of the handsome young movie star who is an Out In Hollywood favorite? In the photo below, this is Chris in a scene from the new movie. Although his agent advised him not to do anymore shirtless photo shoots because he's afraid his beefcake client will be typecast as a beefcake movie star, there's not much he can do when a movie role calls for Chris to remove that pesky shirt. So let's see, opening this weekend are "Fantastic Four" and "Nancy Drew"... which movie will Greg be seeing??? Hello? Buying my tickets to "Fantastic" now!

The magazine writes: cue the bongos for the guy who has always marched to his own beat. Wild at heart and irresistibly earthy, this sunning, surfing and running man has evolved into Hollywood's (and bachelordom's) fittest survivor.
At 37, Matthew McConaughey – who says he only needs "friends and family" to keep him happy and that he avoids "false drama" at all costs – opens up about his bachelor-pad-on-wheels and the qualities he looks for in a woman.
So why does he rarely wear a shirt? ""I love warm weather and summertime. What better way to enjoy it than at..."

What a day it's been.
Watched the French Open at 6 a.m. then I flew into a nasty rage and fired all my servants. That meant I had to spend the day doing laundry, recycling and on and on. But now I'm on my way to an LA Pride-related event for a group called LifeWorks and former NBA player John Amaechi and Ellen Pompeo of "Grey's Anatomy" will be there! (I'll let ya know if she says anything about Isaiah getting SACKED!) Hope to blog about it all tomorrow between the French Open and the parade and the Tony Awards. Meanwhile, here are some pics of Chris Evans in Italy for the premiere of "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" that I found on JustJared.com. What a weekend coming up!!! LA Gay Pride and the French Open finals on Saturday and Sunday and the Tony Awards Sunday night! It's enough to make me weep with joy. And so is this new pic of Matthew McConaughey!!!

OK, we can officially stop feeling bad for Jennifer Aniston now. It could not have been easy to have former hubby Brad Pitt leave her for Angelina Jolie. Vince Vaughn filled the void for awhile and their movie together, 'The Break-Up" was a huge hit. But now we learn that Jennifer's new boyfriend is this man: model Paul Sculfor! I can only quote Barbra Streisand in this situation: "Hello gorgeous!"

I'm sure Antonio Banderas is a very nice man but...I HATE HIM! He's straight and married to Melanie Griffin and yet he gets to be in the middle a Rafael Nadal and Carlos Moya hunk sandwich!
It. Is. No. Fair. Rafael even took his short of during the encouinter which only adds to my bitter envy. Rafael and Carlos are very close friends as they are from the same city in Spain. But on Wednesday, they were rivals as they squared off in the quarterfinals of the French Open where Rafa has never lost and Carlos last won in 1998 when he was just 20.

I'm as bad a Jimmy Kimmel! There's a running joke on that late night show where Kimmel apologizes to Matt Damon for running out of time and not being able to bring him out just before signing off. Well yesterday, I posted pix of Damon's "Ocean's 13" co-stars Brad Pitt and George Clooney getting their handprints and footprints in the famed cement of Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood without a mere of Matt! Ironically, Grauman's is right across the street from the studio where Kimmel's show is filmed!

It seems like just about anybody can get a piece of sidewalk on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. I mean, wacky Britney Spears has one and so do the bizarre Olsen (bag lady) sisters. But the cement in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre, that's reserved for real superstars and Tuesday morning, two of the biggest left their mark joining such legends as John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Elizabeth Taylor and scores of others. I didn't go to the event, I confess, but it did affect my day: my commute to work takes me right by Grauman's and there were traffic jams every which way. I'd prefer being stuck in a jam for George and Brad than for Britney any day!

American male supermodel, fitness model and actor, Rusty Joiner is the new face for the non-prescription pain relievers family, Excedrin. Rusty, who have graced the covers of hundreds of fitness magazine covers, is the hunkiest headache remedy I've ever seen.

In his Excedrin TV commercial, which aired heavily in recent months during "Desperate Housewives" I noticed, is for the new Excedrin 'Back & Body.' Rusty is in nothing but shorts and runs through the chaotic city and unpredictable forest looking all sweaty and wet and, well, magnificant!

He got his start in movies as a youngster in such films as "Loverboy" and "Can't Buy Me Love" in the late 80s. But Patrick Dempsey's greatest success has been on television on "Grey's Anatomy." But he is wise to try and regain that movie stardom while he is hot and is currently filming the romantic comedy "Made of Honor" where he is asked to be the man of honor for his close female friend with whom he really is in love. Sounds like "My Best Friend's Wedding" but with the genders reversed. The film is scheduled for release next year. Meanwhile, Dempsey's recent film with Hilary Swank, "Freedom Writers," is just out on DVD and this Christmas, he has a role in the promising Disney flick "Enchanted" which I've seen a chunk of and I predict will be a big holiday hit.

I think I'm a little brain dead lately. I was watching "The View" last Friday when the gals were talking about the speculation regarding Hugh Jackman's sexuality. I heard the whole thing but didn't write any of it down and didn't think to blog about it. But others did and so I bring this item to you several days late with my apologies for not being more on the ball.
The discussion stemmed from a conversation about when a man is far better looking than his wife, there is speculation that she must be his "beard." After all, we know an ugly toad like Donald Trump can get a pretty wife because he's got all that money.

Joy: He wasn't "doing" the boy from Oz. He was playing in it. This is making Hugh Jackman's life more miserable.
Barbara: He was playing the role of Peter...Peter Allen who was gay. So people thought he must be gay because he was...[Deborra-Lee Furness is] very good looking and it's a very good marriage.

Barbara can be such a suck up sometimes! How does she know if the marriage is good or that Jackman is not actually with his male business partner as is often speculated about?
