The P-word

When I'm in Bangkok it takes some effort to find a legit-yet-affordable establishment -- outside of the four-star, Western hotels lining Sukhumvit Road -- where I'm guaranteed not to be offered "Happy Finish" or more.

As Foothill Cities picked up on, the council briefly addressed the issue of commercial prostitution in Pasadena.

I wanted to write about the matter, and Pasadena's moratorium-friendly council asking for a breather on issuing permits to new massage parlors. Recent council agendas showed a number of new parlors looking to open for business in the Crown City (of Roses.) Not that it's like the 1980s Pasadena of my youth, when sexual entrepreneurs operated visibly along the length of the boulevard.

But I knew they weren't going to get into a substantive debate on the matter and in hindsight, we made the right call to cover the Central District development issue. Look for something later this week.

The excitement of the Central District debate totally made my friends want to be more involved in Pasadena politics. *rolls eyes* Good job, City Council. Meeting started late at 7:00 or so and agenda item 7.b. (a/k/a The Main Event) wasn't addressed until about 9:30.
Politics is about people, and whether it's the city, the workplace or in the home, our lives are rife with political dynamics. Following the narrative of one City Council meeting is like catching one episode of, say, Arrested Development. It's not going to be very interesting, primarily because a lack of background on the characters and how they feed into each others' function. But more often: disfunction.
Todd, you're such a tease-in the writing.
I agree 100% Todd. Pasadena City Council is a lot Arrested Dev., now that you mention it. So does that mean Steve Madison rides a Segway and shouts "COME ON!" :-)

What might be helpful would be if the meeting was preceded by a 60-second recap/promo that began "Last week on ..."
isn't that kinda maybe could be your job?
