Paul's Political Pasadena Mix

| | Comments (10) |

Former Councilman Paul Little wasn't his usual jocular self after last night's meeting of the Pasadena City Council.

"Put that back," he said after I'd picked up one of his mixed CDs to look at. Said he didn't have time to comment on its contents. Gosh, one would think I was a RIAA enforcer.

One thing pols and their staffers don't seem to get: Telling a reporter they can't have something is the best way to guarantee they will. Especially something distributed to elected officials during a public meeting.

Scholars will puzzle over the significance of the 20 tracks Paul selected -- at least for a few minutes. Below I've listed the track titles and the ostensibly corresponding topics/themes he printed on the CD label. (More below the fold)

I've made zero effort to match them up, although some are obvious.

Got some of the artists wrong, Todd. It's the Donna's doing Bad Reputation and Clifton Chenier's version of Man Smart, Woman Smarter. (I wanted to use Harry Belafonte, but didn't have that version... ) Lawyers, Guns and Money is the Wallflowers cover of Warren Zevon's great classic... I only havethe live verson by Zevon on an albumand couldn't transfer it to digital. (Wasn't worth investing in that technology to get the cd absolutely the way I would have wanted... ) FYI - the songs all came from cd's I've actually bought (Except for the alternate version of Apolitical Blues by Lowell George and Bonnie Raitt that was too good to not use... My son sent that one to me, I think). Also, just out of curiosity, how did your story in the S-N begin again? Oh, that's right... And you left off some of the issues / topics listed, like Y2K, electricity, elections, city management (Man Smart, Woman Smarter.. get it?), New Year, gadflies, development, traffic, etc. I will admit some of the songs are are a bit "on the nose" but hey... lots cover more than one topic. I've enjoyed working with you. Thanks for everything. It's been fun. pl

And it's Brother John not by Wild Tchoupitoulas (Magnolias?) but by the Meters / Neville Brothers, which are all different incarnations, basically, of the same bunch of New Orleans family members.
