City seeks input on city manager search

Pasadena officials will host a community meeting on Saturday, March 8 at 10 a.m. at City Hall Council Chambers to get input from residents and others in the search for a new city manager. Those who cannot attend the meeting can submit their comments electronically at www.cityofpasadena.net beginning Friday.

The city has hired Bob Murray & Associates to conduct a nationwide search to replace Cynthia Kurtz, who retired last month. Police Chief Barney Melekian is acting as interim city manager.

It makes sense that Melekian would likely want to hold on to the prestigious position, which is currently paying him about $230,000 a year. He has not openly declared his intention to seek the post permanently, but and it is clear that at least some on the council are open to keeping him around -- a provision that would have made the interim city manager ineligible for the permanent position was removed by the council when Melekian was appointed.

Melekian has also made cryptic comments to my predecessor, Todd Ruiz, including the following quote from Todd's  Jan. 4 article:

"One thing people may be surprised to learn is that I have more diverse interests than law enforcement."

He is also taking a doctorate class in public policy at USC. I'm sure it is a useful degree for a police chief, but I doubt many top cops go as far academically... unless they have higher ambitions.

Plus the limited scuttlebutt I'm getting (remember, I'm still new around here) is that Melekian's initial denials to city officials that he was interested in permanently occupying the city manager's position have pretty much evaporated. But I am also hearing that, while Melekian is apparently a candidate, the March 8 meeting is proof that this is a legitimate national search and that the chief's appointment to fill Kurtz's shoes is far from a foregone conclusion.

A final list of candidates for the position is expected by early summer.

Melekian never said he didn't want the job. He's declared he is interested in the permanent position, according to the other Pasadena news sources I saw. Mayor Bogus Bill is pushing this accelerated process to leverage his input and minimize community participation. What ever happened to interview panels of citizens? What ever happened to public process? Remember what happened when the Council hired Phil Hawkey over objections from northwest Pasadena? We got Isaac Richards and years of council mayhem. Council needs to give Melekian a chance in the job before interviewing other candidates. He might just be excellent, folks. I sure haven't heard about Melekian proposing we charge for 911 service like Bogaard's and Larry Wilson's camping pal in Ventura is doing! (Now, why didn't that rate a story in the S-N, since the local birdcage liner seems to cover every other Rick Cole item?) Mike
Thank you so much for the information, Mr. Ortega. Welcome to the blogadena mafia! Sorry, Sharkey. Did you miss the first sentence of Fred's post?
Thanks for the welcome, Miss Havisham. Sharkey, I stand corrected on the fact that Melekian has publicly said he wants to stay as CM. However, I stand by what my sources are telling me and what previous stories have reported: that the chief initially did not show an interest in the permanent city manager position.
Mr. Ortega, welcome to a complex beat with a lot of players and a lot of agendas. I know that you will do it justice! There is a lot of information out there. There was a Pasadena Weekly story a couple of weeks ago that reported Melekian's interest in the position. Aside from that, it sort of sounds like you are taking shots at Melekian and, although this is a blog, you are the journalistic beat reporter for the local print media, not a pure blogger. The process is just getting started, and the public (including me) is going to rely heavily on you for the straight story. News when it is news and an editorial when it is an editorial. Things can get mixed in a blog, but we really need the straight facts from our reporters. I look to Dormitas and Proctor to do the heavy lifting with the critical blogs (and we owe them a debt as residents for what they add to the process and to our democracy). I am sure that you are careful with sources as they become sources to reporters to further an agenda. For my part as a resident and taxpayer, I personally believe that Melekian should be given the permanent position. I personally feel that he is a strong, open and honest leader and that he will be accountable to a wide base. I look forward to your columns and your blogs. We have deep roots in this community and we all want the best for it! Blog on!
It's time for a big change for Pasadena. We need someone who is familiar with Pasadena - it's issues and what it needs to have those issues dealt with. Now is not the time to hire an outsider. If Melikian does a good job during the interim and he wants the job - he should be given that opportunity.
Welcome and good luck. Pasadena's blogosphere is a tough tank to swim in. Did I read that press notice right and the meeting on the 8th is the ONLY chance community members will have to comment? What happened to "Community participation will be a permanent part of achieving a greater city?" Or maybe they don't want to achieve a greater city? D.
