710 legal tussle still possible

| | Comments (2) |

Late yesterday while working on the 710 tunnel story I got wind of the fact that the city is quite serious about legal challenges to the freeway project. This only gets minimum play in the story, because the city discussed the legal possibilities in a closed session meeting and the Council was quite tight-lipped about it. Here is what I did write:

Mayor Philip Putnam said that his vote was about getting the best deal for South Pasadena, not supporting the project. In fact, in a closed-session item at Monday's meeting, the City Council met with their attorneys to talk about possible legal action against the tunnel project.

Putnam told me to "stay-tuned" over the next couple of weeks, so we may hear some more about this yet. Whatever happens, it is clear that South Pasadena wants to be a player in this project, whether that means obstructing it with legal challenges, or trying to get some concessions from the legislature.

Seems to me they are playing it pretty smart- get what they can out of legislation that has a strong chance of passing while examining the possibility of legal challenges.

Let's get this right, now some in South Pasadena want to spend another $14 million dollars of local City general fund money on lawyers to stop the 710 tunnel compromise that doesn't destroy the City of South Pasadena? It seems like an awful lot of South Pasadena residents are getting pretty tired of spending City money to fight a battle they've already won?

What is going to happen to all the residents that live along the East side of the 210 Westbound freeway between the 210 & 134 Junction and Lincoln Ave off ramp. We have been suffering with all the noise due to the lack of a sound wall that has been approved by the state, but has not started due to budget cuts. Furthermore, we all live with an incredible amount of ground vibration that is transfered from these 18 wheelers loaded to capacity pouncing on this poorly constructed highway. After many calls to Cal Trans and their subsequent confirmation that this stretch of the freeway does indeed require great attention. They did approve a small bandaid and grinded and pumped up several slabs that proved to be a futile attempt to reduce the ground vibration. We need attention before extension of the 710 through La Canada.
