Congressmen Dreier and Miller to illegal immigrants: LEAVE

| | Comments (6) |

One way to ensure that your immigration legislation will never pass in a Democratic-majority congress is to give it a extremely provocative name. Thus, Rep. David Dreier, R-San Dimas, and Inland Empire-based Rep. Gary Miller, R-Brea, have introduced the LOOPHOLE ELIMINATION AND VERIFICATION ENFORCEMENT ACT, an umbrella immigration measure that does everything from fund an increase of border patrol officers to punishing cities that issue business licenses to companies that employ illegal immigrants.

The proposed law, which is very extensive, does have some reasonable provisions in it. But without offering any carrots to go along with the stick, it is doubtful it would get any support from the other side of the aisle even if it were not called the LEAVE act.

Election year grand standing. It is a safe pander to the republican base to start whacking the illegal immigrant PiƱata. How about steep fines for employers who knowingly employ illegal aliens? Oh wait the chamber of commerce usually doesn't like that one.
I am repulsed by any legislation against immigrants. We have laws and a process already in place. Some of those laws are unreasonable and should be challenged. People from other countries coming here should be treated with respect and compassion. They have a tough enough time with all of the hatred they have to face from the citizenry, as it is. It's horrifying that we are so unwelcoming.

in hard economic times, the last people here always get the brunt of anger and fear. If I am losing my job...it can't be the GOP jerk-off I elected in between watching NASCAR races, nope it must be all those immigrants.

I support laws against people who commit crimes - like illegally crossing the borders. It's a crime and bleeding hearts don't want to admit that part.

It is indeed a crime. So is shoplifting and mass murder. There is a legitimate argument about degree and severity. Illegals are not the cause of all our problems and realistically we can not ship them all home. So what do we do now? Like it or not any solution will require a buy in from the "criminals", any program that is too draconian will keep them underground, as that is what they are used to it is their status quo. Like it or not they are participants in the game and they will have to be induced to cooperate in any solution. So do we fix this thing or just punish people who happen to look different and talk funny?

> Who said punishing people who look different/ talk funny? I don't care if you speak perfect English and look like Larry Bird - if you're in this country illegally, it bothers me. I don't know - something about somebody just wandering into our country on their own free will so they can "work"...what if they want to come to our country and, I don't know, take flight training classes and try to do 9/11 all over again? You gotta be careful in the world we live in now.
