Palin as VP: local reaction article under way

| | Comments (9) |

I'm doing the "local-reaction-to" article, where we contact local figures to react to national news, and as expected, GOP members are echoing GOP talking points about Alaska governor and VP pick Sarah Palin, such as:

1) she is a "hockey mom"- you know, like a soccer mom, but in Alaska, they play hockey, so.....

2) her short tenure as governor and lack of national experience means very little, because she actually has more experience than Barack Obama, and she is a quick learner.

3) this is a historical moment for the GOP, and for the nation.

However, I have to say, everyone I have talked to is genuinely very excited about the pick. I've spoken with these sources enough to tell the difference between them echoing GOP talking points as strategy, and when they are genuinely excited to make the case for something. They are very excited about Palin.

Democrats, of course, will be echoing the opposite talking points: her short tenure as governor, her lack of foreign-policy experience, and an inconvenient ethics investigation that we will all be hearing a lot about soon.

UPDATE: To frive the point home, while out for lunch, I got a phone message, an unsolicited call from a local female GOP committee chair who gushed about Palin for so long that the abrasive Star News phone system cut her off. She as forced to call back to get me her contact info, but in that call she got back on the subject of Palin and got real close to getting cut off again. I don't know if this will ultimately be that great a pick for the GOP or not, but the local GOP certainly think it will be.

It's a brilliant selection on McCain's part. Of course, Obama's campaign has already come out with a statement attempting to belittle her accomplishments and diminish her record, while at the same time insulting small-town America. That's a dumb stunt that will come back to haunt them.

Oil & ethics - two 'inconvenient truths' for the Republican party. She has an ongoing ethics investigation (as do her state's senators), and the Republicans think she's 'brilliant.?' And she's a (faint) heart-beat away from the presidency??? NO THANX! Just remember, the Republicans are masters at 'uniformity,' towing the party line and all saying the same thing (but often doing something quite different, I might add). The Democrats are stressing unity, not uniformity - big difference and bigger challenge. Don't confuse the Republican's 'fall in line' mentality with 'brilliance.' Picking a woman as a VP choice is really just a cynical move by the Republicans, aimed solely at getting votes, otherwise they would have picked a qualified woman - there are several (a few) in their party with real credentials of qualification. They're the party that killed the "equal pay for equal work" legislation with their tired, old mantra of 'bad for business' - this proves they deep-down do NOT think women as equals, but means to their end - win the election at all costs. In the spirit of disclosure, I am a Democrat, but, "some of my best friends (and family) are Republicans." I was born & raised, and lived in Pasadena most of my life, but currently live in Santa Monica. No, I'm not rich (not even by Obama's standards).
Keep babbling, Mr. Salazar. You and your "candidate for change" aren't bringing anything new to the table on the issue of Governor Palin. Just bratty rhetoric.

PCC- You've got to admit that this will make it difficult for McCain to go after Obama on the experience issue. I also don't think this will garner much excitement among Hillary supporters. However, I do think this gets the GOP base more motivated to volunteer for McCain.

I predict that a number of Hillary supporters will jump ship. Two reasons: the obvious one (Obama snubbed Hillary in their eyes); and the far-left feminists and commentators are showing monumental disrespect toward the second female VP candidate in history, and it's undeserved. They did the same thing to Condi Rice. This long-time personal friend of the Clintons became evil incarnate as soon as she became the first African-American female to be appointed as Secretary of State. What the feminists and Black Democratic leadership should have celebrated as a historic victory, they crapped on it instead. They should all be ashamed.
That previous comment from "anonymous" was from me (PCC). Don't know why it came up that way.
Did you know early this am someone started re-writing her wikipedia page--way padded, downplaying or deleting any negative. The editors of wiki have put a restriction on any further alteration--like they had to do for GW's page.

I'm like the national GOP is picking candidates based on Proctor's Hotness Scale (tm).
