Dreier, Bush in agreement 93.6 percent of the time

| | Comments (5) |

There are quite a few folks out there who have interest in the Dreier/Warner race that I wrote about last week. I've received a few emails, some critical, about the race, and about our coverage of Dreier in general. The irony of the emails, is that the thing some people feel angry about is that we have not given serious coverage to opponents of Dreier- which is exactly what the intent of the Warner article was in the first place.

Two other emails/calls of interest: first from the Courage Campaign, a local progressive activist group that did an admirable job last winter of pushing for county voters to get their primary ballots counted in the double-bubble debacle. They cite Congressional Quarterly voting data that indicates that Dreier voted with Bush 93.6 percent of the time, and do a summary of the votes they consider most offensive here (quick rundown: the list includes votes against renewable power, a vote against the GI Bill that would increase educational benefits to veterans, the Terry Schiavo vote, and most of the Iraq war votes).

The call of interest came from Ted Brown, the Libertarian party candidate who is also a candidate for Dreier's seat. He pointed out, rightfully, that he should be included in articles about the seat. So to give him some (limited) exposure until the next article on the race, I offered to do an online interview to run on this blog later this week. Stay tuned.

Please do a real article in the newspaper, with real reporting and issues. One that educates the votes on Dreier and Warner; who they are as people and where they stand on the issue. Gave us the voter their backgrounds so that we can be educated when we go to the polls. That is the role of a newspaper since the time of our founding fathers.

Good point, Thomas but I think that's exactly what Dan is doing. If you check out that link you can see that, on the issues, David Dreier votes almost every time with George W. Bush and, I would argue, against the values and interests of his district. Raising the minimum wage? AGAINST Expanding education benefits for returning veterans? AGAINST Holding oil companies accountable for price gouging at the pump? AGAINST Extending unemployment benefits for up to 13 weeks for those hardest hit by the economic downturn? AGAINST Who is he representing in Congress, his district or George W. Bush?

Dan: It's great to see the paper starting to cover the real David Dreier. He somehow manages to pass himself off as a "moderate" when in fact he's a closet conservative. As the Courage ad and website point out, David Dreier has voted with Bush nearly all the time. His constituents need to hold him accountable for his votes. Thanks for the coverage. I hope there's more since Dreier is so careful not to allow for real interactions (he goes for staged, controlled engagement). Rick.

The problem with David Drier is that he's made himself just plain comfortable in Washington and we've become too comfortable with him. The people he represents too often haven't bothered to really look into what Drier has been up to in his 28 years in Congress. People are shocked when they find out that Drier voted against Veterans' rights and voted with Bush the vast, vast majority of the time. Its like Drier is the crazy uncle that lives down the basement left up to his own devices. The family thinks he's harmless, until they realize he's been down there burying bodies all these years. Unfortunately for Drier, the bodies are starting to turn up. I guess that's the beauty of David Drier, the more you dig, the more you find. Now all that's left is to have his shortchanged and misinformed constituents on the evening news saying with sad expressions, "He always seemed like such a nice, quiet guy, who would have known?"

David Dreier is just like Bush, really good at winning races, really bad at governing. The Star News completely contradicted themselves by saying this is Dreier's first serious challenge, and later say Warner will not be a serious threat. No one has ever run this kind of campaign against Dreier. Challengers have almost beat Dreier with no recourses. This time Dreier will not be able to bail out his indicted friends. He has to fight for his life. Sure Warner could use a million to match Dreier's war chest. I think the 100's of thousands he has worked hard for will be plenty to tell people about the truth. David Dreier is a crooked, hypocrite of a fraud. A vote for him is a vote for more Bushite politics. I have had enough. The 100 declined to state and Republican voters I call a day agree as well. David Dreier does not represent American business, he supports billionaire over seas thugs. TIME to turn him out to pasture to play with his lobbyists. VOTE Russ Warner
