David Dreier opening up attacks on his opponent

| | Comments (12) |

Last week, I blogged about Dreier's congressional opponent, Russ Warner, and noted that he might make a decent showing against Dreier in the race. Apparently the congressman has similar concerns: in the last week, the Republican Congressional Committee has honed in on the race and has opened an attack on Warner. Click here to see a scanned version of a mailer that is being sent around the 26th District.

The flier basically goes after Warner for not always paying his taxes on time, and for having his corporation's state license suspended this year. I just spoke with Warner for an upcoming article: he says the license is now active again, and was suspended briefly for late payment of a $30 annual fee. I plan to make calls to confirm this for an article that will run this weekend.

Warner, meanwhile, has been attacking Dreier on his web site, narrowing in on his overseas travel with taxpayer and campaign money. As seen on the left, a feature on his site calls the congressman "Frequent Flyer Dreier," seeking to paint him as liquor-swilling, money-grubber who lives to go on congressional junkets. They've done some thorough work adding up Dreier's travel funds, but if you look at what they've come up with, it really isn't that much: $114,000 over 27 years. It sounds big at first, but listed individual trips show Dreier spending a couple of hundred to just over $1,000 per trip.

I'm all for holding politicians accountable for wasting money on travel, but unlike our state and local legislators, members of congress have legitimate reasons to go overseas.... in fact, it would concern me if they never left the country. That, of course, is not to say that congress members don't waste money on needless travel. The devil is all in the details.

I mentioned in the last blog post that the Warner campaign ran a poll that put Dreier's lead at 49 percent to 37 percent, and showed that the lead dramatically narrows if voters hear a description of Warner's background. This week, the Dreier campaign released a poll that shows Dreier up 50 percent to 33 percent. Your guess is as good as mine for which one is more accurate. Stay tuned for more this weekend.

Dreier's travel can be nothing more than an aside and a diversion in this campaign. It is politics as usual to talk about and it is evident that both campaigns, Dreier's and Warner's, are campaigning in a business as usual style. In the coming years this just won't do as the looming economic mess the United States is facing will go further than can be imagined at this point towards compelling voters to become more educated and more involved. One day soon not answering the real questions that matter will be the most direct route to a lost race. When comparing Warner to Dreier what voters have to ask themselves is if they want to re-elect a guy who has been comfortably ensconced in his office for going on 30 years. Do they want to maintain the status quo in electing Dreier who votes with President Bush more than 90% of the time? Are they still comfortable with Republican policies which include deregulating everything under the sun, which is largely responsible for our current economic woes and can be traced to legislation Phil Gramm authored, David Dreier supported, and President Clinton ultimnately signed late in 1999 which tore away many restrictions and demotivated agencies from providing oversight to our financial community? When the government is essentially paying to bail-out Fannie, Freddie, Bear-Stearns and Lehman through our pension accounts, it may be time for some change. Dreier has the most ridiculously gerrymandered district there could ever be, which helped him gain his seat to begin with. The idea in the district is that the people who live in the hills tend to be more affluent and so, less interested in anyone other than themselves. Hence, they vote republican, buying into all the "deregulation is better, lower taxes, trickle down, privatize," claptrap. Personally I have a feeling more of these people than ever are going to recognize that a strong federal government is the protector of the people and can and should be an effective, efficient and accountable employer, (instead of the hobgoblin of $700 toilet seats.) In an election cycle which will be marked by change, I recommend sticking with that theme and changing our representative. Then we should follow that with a hawkish attitude toward Mr. Warner.

Well put, MJ. For those who just want the bottom line, Dreier is a party politician who represents the interests that keep him from finding a real job year after year. It's time for a change. Vote Warner.

I was able to quickly check the business license on the secretary of state website: http://kepler.sos.ca.gov/corpdata/ShowAllList?QueryCorpNumber=C1466449 and apparently Dreier is right. Warner's business license is suspended. If he's trying to cover that up - which is obviously easily public record since I found it - what else is he hiding?

Matt- I have seen that, but I talked with the Tax Franchise Board, and they say it is actually not suspended anymore.

I can tell you as a business man that the California Franchise Tax Board uses the Business License as a weapon to make you bend to their view of the tax code. That is one of issues with doing business in California a overly complex tax code and budget that is not balanced. That is why I'm voting for Russ Warner because he understand what it is like to work and grow a business. David Dreier has never had a job and flies around the world on my tax dollar. Dreier is not alone on these trip around the world, he takes his chief of staff who is also his husband. If the Dreier's chief of staff was a woman the press would be reporting it.

HAHAHA!!! I read the flier, if that all Drier has on Russ Warner, Warner should win in a land slide, but because we have "Safe" districts it's an uphill battle for Warner. Drier is a typical career politican, and I wonder what he would do AFTER he is done... Work with the lobby crowd? What really gets to me is he got elected right after college and never held a real job... People wake up and enough with this "experience" and "partisan" stuff. I can't vote in the election but I hope Drier is fired in November. Good Luck Mr. Warner

I have to bring this up...After reading the flier again I can't help to laugh. Shows that Russ is one of us. But Drier would hit him on "taxes," something I'm sure ALL voters have issues with. I'll be honest, I have seen my taxes one time to realize that I over looked a few times not paying $1,000 here, $250 there, and one year $2,000, but I paid them off as soon as the FTB told me they placed a lien on my property. On top of that, what's wrong running a business from home? I do it? This mailer only shows Drier out of touch with the community.

Dreier has been a Bush enabler who backed the administration almost 100%. He's one of those guys who knows what side his bread is buttered on. In other words, a Republican party hack who only votes the party line. Who wants this guy around? Time for a change.

I also like how Dreier hits Warner on taxes when he "forgot" to include $263,000 in stock profits in his filing LAST YEAR. He probably knew that the market would tank and no one would be the wiser after his stock lost value. I bet we could find much more dirt on Dreier's family business.
