Marathon cancelled

| | Comments (19) |

I've just returned from a morning jaunt around Pasadena..... no, not a 26 mile jaunt. Just the hell-as-long-as-I'm-up-anyway-might-as-well-bike-around jaunt. Why was I up? My promised 4:00 a.m. email did not come. Nor was there any update on the website. Would that have been too much to ask?

So I got up and started biking over, with my girlfriend (who was doing the 5k, having signed up too late for the half-marathon). Two minutes in, we came across a sign saying it was canceled.

Lots of people were pulling up to Pasadena Community College, only to be turned away. Several overheard conversations indicated a lot of people had no idea there was a possibility of it being canceled. What a fiasco! I'm glad I live 1.5 miles from the starting line, instead of being from out of town.

At least I got to see a nice sunrise and got the first Europane pastries of the day.

Some notes:

-What next? Rescheduling? Will there be a new marathon? Presumably , they will actually update the website at some point. I believe we have a reporter on this story today. If not, someone will definitely be on it tomorrow.

-Do I get my money back?

-Overheard from a pack of bikers: "Well what do we do now?" Reply: "Let's head up to Mount Wilson." No idea if they really intended to do it.

-Around 7:00 marathon participants began running through the Lake/Colorado Avenue.....I guess, like us, they figured they might as well since they were awake anyway.

-It will be interesting to hear why they decided to schedule this marathon in November. It is pretty late in fire season, but still a date that had a chance of having smoke inhalation problems.

-Several PCC security guards I spoke with were pretty unhappy to hear that there was no website notification of the cancellation.... must have been a long morning for them telling the same story again and again.

UPDATE: It appears that based on comments on this blog that some people who signed up for the newsletter list did get email notification this morning. I signed up last night, which apparently was too late. I wish it hadn't been as maybe I could have saved some other people some hassle by updating this blog. I still think the website should have been updated at 4:00. Here is the email (reproduced from comments section):

We regret to inform you that we have been compelled to cancel today's Kaiser Permanente Pasadena Marathon as a result of the significant wildfires in the Los Angeles area and resulting unsafe air quality. Pasadena Forward's decision was made in consultation with the Kaiser Permanente Medical Team and the City of Pasadena. Please know that it was extremely difficult to arrive at this decision, and we know that this is a disappointing outcome for all of us who have worked so hard for this inaugural event. However, the only appropriate response to this emergent situation, given that the safety and well-being of our participants is at the forefront of our concerns, was to cancel. Over the next several days, we will hold discussions to determine appropriate next steps. Once concrete plans have been developed, updates will be posted at www.pasadenamarathon.org. All registered participants will also be notified via email of all important updates. Thank you for your support and patience as we work through this challenge. We hope you are safe and well. I received email last night around 8 pm stating there was a possibility it would be canceled, and then as promised, received email at 4:05 am confirming the race was canceled and that they would provide updates on next steps in the next few days. With that I went back to sleep.. I have also seen updates on the local news tickers this morning on cbs and nbc. I think the organizers were in a tough position, so let's give them the benefit of the doubt. Sounds like some folks didn't get the email or didn't check email last night. Hopefully, they can reschedule soon.

Kudos to the Star-News for being up on this story. I turned to you guys this morning for current information on the race, and learned from comments on your blog that the race had been cancelled. I didn't receive my own email from race organizers until 5:30 this morning, and the pasadenamarathon.org website, as you note, STILL has no announcement of any kind (as of 8am). Pitiful. Important to keep in mind, though, that our frustrations pale in comparison with real tragedy, the losses of those whose lives are touched more directly by the fires...

We also decided to go ahead and ride over (some of our team members had received the email and let us know). FYI, we ran into Mayor Bogaard on his bike and he said that the organizers had consulted with Kaiser, the police, etc. and that there was no question that it should be cancelled. It is a shame, and a huge disappointment for everyone. But Richard, you are absolutely right - this is nothing compared to what others are going through right now. Let's all keep them in our prayers this morning...

I received an e-mail at 3:58 (and also received an e-mail last night about a possible cancellation) but I first learned about it from my sister (evacuated from her home in Yorba Linda) who called me at 4:20 because she saw an announcement on KCAL. I agree that they should have updated the website but, as someone else said, we need to put this in perspective. I just hope they reschedule it soon.

I think my big point of confusion was that the website promised an email. If I had not been expecting one, I might have gone to more lengths to find the info. If I had checked my own blog, for example, my commenters would have let me know it was being canceled :) Still, it was fun to be up early and seeing people wandering around on the streets. Re: the fire, according to weather forecasts the winds are supposed to die down this afternoon, so hopefully the damage does not get too much worse before it gets better.

I received an email last night and one at 4:00 a.m. this morning. Let's not be so quick to criticize.

What a poor attitude. Too bad the fires that have destroyed so much, with injuries and possible deaths, caused you such grief. Perhaps if you had not waited until the night before the event to sign up you might have been more informed. I received the notice last night at 8:00 and at 3:57 this morning, as did others in our training group. Pitiful? The only thing pitiful here is the attitude of some people. Poor reflection on the Star News.
I expected it 2 B cancelled. Will it be rescheduled? It may depend on the number of participants who re sign up & the state of the economy. Dan, you didn't lose any sleep by gettin up early. You got the great EuroPane Bakery pastries fresh outta de oven! That was an even better reason to awaken early.

True enough, L.O. I'm disappointed it was canceled, but it was a fun morning.

Those who signed up timely received proper and timely notifications from the race organizers. However they missed updating the webpage, which would have helped many others. Living in Orange County, it was painfully apparent from the smoke and ash here on Saturday afternoon that the race would need to be canceled due to health concerns. Additionally, all the emergency personnel who were to work the race were no doubt needed for more pressing duties. They are the real heroes, working overtime to keep order and fight the blazes. In lieu of the race, they are today's winners.

I received an email regarding possible cancellation and heard that it was cancelled on the news around 1:00 AM. Even it had not been cancelled, I would have hoped you would have taken your lungs into consideration. Staff resources for this event are probably tapped for the fires and most importantly, volunteers have family and friends that are affected by the fires. Did you sign up for the marathon news email notification???

We traveled here for the event, incurring transportation and hotel costs. We are still able to keep this in perspective. They canceled the race for good reason, not because they just didn't feel like it. We got the email just fine and several on line running forums published it at 4 am. Grow up.

I received the urgent event update at 7:43PM Saturday night stating possible cancellation notification at 4AM. At exactly 4AM, the email for cancellation arrived at my yahoo inbox. One possible oversight is that when I checked the main website at 5:11AM, it still did not show the cancellation and that's where some people were looking for the info. However, the organizers have been working very hard and I believe they did the best they could under the situation.
Kudos go out to Pasadena Forward (Pasadena Marathon organizers) for keeping in consideration the health of 8,000 participants. Not to mention, several of Pasadena’s Bravest (Firefighters) are assigned and committed to strike teams on many of the blazes that continue to threaten our neighbors, friends and families. They are the ones that provide us (runners) with first aid, IV’s (when we get extremely dehydrated) and other emergency medical services during the course of the race. They had one choice: save life and property or treat marathon participants. Emergency Personnel…one more thing to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. GM FireRunners.com

To be clear, everyone, I am not trying to be excessively critical here- most of what I wrote above (except for the update) was before I realized other people got an email update. For some reason, I did not get it... I suspect because I did not sign up for the newsletter until last night. It did finally come at 10 or so this morning for me. Also, I am not criticizing anyone for canceling the marathon- that was clearly the right decision. Just would have been nice to see it on the website this morning.

I received my e-mail at 3:57 am and called several friends to let them know the race was cancelled. I think the marathon staff handled this situation very well. I would have been one of those runners coming in around 11:30 am and the smoke was pretty bad already.

Gosh, I cannot believe some people are complaining that the marathon was cancelled. Common sense would tell you the air quality would be such that it would endanger the participants. I applaud the committee for cancelling/postponing it. Granted, people perhaps traveled far & wide to participate, but no one can predict the fires OR the catastrophic nature of the ones that hit the L.A. area. It is disappointing, of course, but absolutely the right decision. I don't even live in L.A. & knew where to look for a possible cancellation! You just need to be proactive in an emergency situation such as this. God bless the people who have lost their homes, possessions, etc. There will always be another race....

I belive it's Pasadena CITY Collge. How hard is it for you to check the name of the school when you apparently were there in the morning. Otherwise, good post about the marathon. How unfortunate.

I think everyone is assuming that the fires have caused poor air quality everywhere. The National Weather Service maps showed dangerous levels of smoke in fire areas as well as areas downwind, but the Pasadena area was fine. I was at the college and had an unobscured view of the moon and stars. Smoke? What smoke? Did anyone do air quality measurements before canceling the events? I doubt it. If emergency personnel were needed elsewhere, sure, cancel the marathon. At least be honest and objective about this.
