Protest over China's human rights record on tap for City Council meeting
Perhaps we all thought this particular Pasadena political battle had passed, but apparently not. A year after the extended scuffle over whether to allow groups affiliated with the Chinese government to submit a float in the Rose Bowl parade, human rights groups are showing up to protest China's failure to live up to the U.N.'s Declaration of Human Rights. They will be protesting in front of city hall and later speaking at the meeting.
The U.N.'s declaration was offered up a year ago by the City Council as an alternative to a statement singling out the Chinese government as a violator of human rights, which would have caused great offense to groups dealing with the city, as well as officials' in Pasadena's sister city in China. Council members Chris Holden and Jacque Robinson pushed for a more specific statement but were voted down by the rest of the Council.
This week is the 60th annual anniversary of the declaration.
