Colorado Boulevard trees back on the agenda
The issue just isn't going to die- the council agreed yesterday, at the behest of Chris Holden to consider a moratorium on removing trees throughout the city- including the section of Colorado Boulevard between Los Robles and Lake. (see update below)
Of course, that won't include the multiple trees that have already been taken out in the area. Accusations were flying at Monday's meeting about the manner of their removal- they were taken out Thursday night-Friday morning, a tactic some charged was to hide the removal from the public.
I will say, whatever motive they may have had in doing it at night, I did get a call from Martin Pastucha, the public works director on Thursday evening, telling me the city was going to take some down that night. The purpose, he said (on a message) was to avoid the traffic problems that would result from doing them during the day.
Unfortunately, I was out from work sick most of Thursday and all of Friday and didn't get the message until Monday.
Whatever happens, it is amazing how much energy this issues has consumed for the city- I still don't know what solution the council can possibly work out that will please everybody, and it seems like they've already considered every option.... except possibly the idea of removing the trees and putting in something better than the shadeless combination of ginkgo and palm trees (how about some native trees?). That, however, seems to me like a solution that will please nobody.
UPDATE: Turns out I was given bad information from the city... the moratorium WILL NOT include the trees on Colorado. They are scheduled to be cut down this week.
