Blair, South Pasadena, among surprises

| | Comments (22) |

How much difference does a coach make? Marshall beat Blair 40-6 last year, the Vikings finished 0-10, and were blown out in their last five games.
In just one game Tip Sanders, a no-nonsense throwback coach, returns to his alma mater and leads the Vikings to a 28-0 shutout over Marshall on Saturday. My friends, that's coaching, plain and simple.
Another underrated coach is South Pas' Ed Smith. The Tigers have a small roster that resembles more of a Prep League team, but year in and year out, they seem to overachieve. No, not good enough to challenge for the Rio Hondo League title, but good enough for a few surprises, like Friday's 25-20 win over San Gabriel....
Also, who do u like in big games this week, Monrovia-Arcadia and Temple City-Alhambra....For tomorrow's top ten rankings, keep reading and weigh in...

STAR-NEWS FOOTBALL RANKINGS
1. St. Francis (1-0)
2. Monrovia (2-0)
3. Muir (0-1)
4. Arcadia (0-1)
5. Temple City
6. Alhambra (1-0)
7. Rosemead (0-1)
8. La Canada (1-1)
9. South Pasadena (1-0)
10. Pasadena (1-1)

Well, they are up 24 - 7 at halftime against Alhambra...hmm...pretty impressive.

SP beat three schools that don't have winning records. How does that make them good? They struggled against San Gabriel (1-3) and Glendale(0-3).

Man south pasadena does i agree have a small squad! but you know that with this squad i feel they can do big things! i would say with there high powered offense with a great o line and great skiiled man like Joshua Parish and Micheal Flynn they're high calibered. espeacially with there passing game which was not a factor last year at all i believe the tigers are going to fare off very well this year. and there defense high powered as usual. no questions even to be asked about the tigers

South Pasadena does have a small roster... but it seems 2 me that their players have heart. josh parish (fb/lb0 and michael flynn (qb) are 2 exceptional players. They seem 2 have a hard hitting defensive unit who forced 5 turnovers in 2 games... not 2 mention their o-line hasn't let their QB get sacked once in 2 weeks in a row and hasn't turned the ball over once. dont overlook south pasadena this year sanders. i have a feling they r gonna go long this year...

SHUT UP!

Is Coach Smith's offense as predictable as Don Markham's? Markham never fooled anybody.

Ed Smith's offense is so predictable it isn't even funny. Right 34 power, 31 trap and then he throws in 34 power pass or a boot leg pass. Come on now! Once they play someone good then talk to me. Wins over San Gabriel and Hoover don't say much. If you look at South Pas's non-league schedule the only team they play that is decent is Alhambra... By the way, Coach Hertal should be the HC at SP. My prediction is that SP will go 6-4 with them losing to Alhambra, TC, LC and Monrovia.

The linemen who don't get ink probably don't want it anyway. They get praised from the people who matter: their family, coaches and fellow hawgs.

Come on, Fred. Don't let moms on this blog whine that their kids aren't getting enough ink.

Get over it.

Every player, every coach, and every fan knows that there are stars on every team. They tend to yet more attention because they produce more. This doesn't mean that the others are unimportant, just not necessarily news worthy.

And, they are recognized... with a certificate, trophy or letter at the Awards Banquet at the end of the season.

It has been, and always will be that way.

debbie said:

I believe there are 33 players on the south pasadena football team. The coach only seems to talk about 2 players. Its a team effort for all players and they should be recognized in one form or another . So all comments should be made of the team not just 2 players because without the others their is no team.

Hey Tennessee...

If head coaches get the blame when things go bad, they should get most of the credit when times are good... and boy, it looks like times are great on Diamond Ave.

BTW - A second round in CIF isn't exactly "mediore". So Pas made it to the 2nd round in 1997... quite a feat for their talent level.

Tennessee Tiger said:

I whole heartedly agree with Tip Sanders and his approach at Blair. Finally someone with credibility that CARES to spend his time with those kids who desperately need it. As far as the opinion of Coach Smith...I would tend to disagree. I think the true mastermind that gets the most out of the kids is Coach Hertel. If you remember, before he showed up on the SoPas football scene, they were horribly unimaginative and failed to use the skill players they had effectively (remember the mid-late 90's...lot's of talent, mediocre results). Since his help with the QB's and offensive scheming, they have been able to be competitive. I think Smith, by himself, has an understanding of game management and talent assessment, but lacks the ability to maximize the potential of the players he does have. Props to coaches Hertel and Chi!

jojo is right...Arcadia's star defensive player Kevin Hess is out with a foot injury and the other star Kevan Walker came out with some sort of leg injury. That hurt Arcadia badly in the 2nd half of the St. Francis game. (Game could've been different if that kick off return for TD wasn't called back too.)

Questionable call but I guess we'll see if Arcadia can overcome the adversity and beat a very good Monrovia team.

jojo said:

Arcadia is beat up. I believe some of their best players suffered injuries in the first half of the St. Francis game. The game was close in the first but with all of the players out St. Francis blew the game open in the 3rd. But look for Arcadia to bounce back, but not soon.

BigMLover said:

Coach is right about Ed Smith... no one in the RHL does more with less than Ed. With the changing demographics in the SGV, So. Pasadena may be far from their CIF championship days of old, but Ed consistently grooms two or three kids a year to compete and win.

It's the inability to absorb injuries that has led to the eventual downfall of the Tigers.

New York said:

As I said before, teams would be foolish to overlook Blair.

GloucesterCoach said:

It's great to see Coach Smith get some credit after all these years of hard work. He definately is a no non-sense coach but the players always seem to love him. I think we'll see Temple City beat Alhambra this week but I don't know if Monrovia can beat Arcadia. Especially after hearing about Arcadia rolling over TC in that scrimmage, and doing a respectable job against one of the best teams in the area St. Francis. What's up with the Glendale Coach talking about a 10-0 season and getting absolutely smacked down 53-0? You have to think with you head not your heart.

phashon said:

first of all, tip sanders is one of the best coach's of all time. he was my coach in pop warner , he brings out the best in kids and shows no favortism ! he should have been the head coach at P.H.S ! i bet you they would not have lost 69-0. when he had P.H.S JV team they went 10-0 that year and the players won the turkey tussle in 1995 as seniors. then he goes to marshall and look what he did with them ! now he is at blair and got his first win and you guys are hating on him , that sounds like good coaching to me.and i want to tell coach lavell good luck on the season.
second of all, robledo how do you find in your heart to put a team at number ten on the star news roster that should have lost their first game but, the other teams coach made a big mistake. and the teams defense has gave up a 102 points in 2 games. BLAIR should be #10 cause more wins are coming. and just to let everyone know i am a stang to the heart.

RUIZ said:

WELL TIP'S WIN WAS NOT A SURPRISE. HE IS ONE THE BEST COACHES IN PASADENA. THERE IS NO DOUBT IN MY MIND. MARSHALL WAS GOOD AT A POINT AND THAT POINT WAS WHEN TIP WAS COACHING THERE. I SHOULD KNOW I WAS PART OF TEAM. I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT BLAIR WILL HAVE A GREAT SEASON. SO YA SHOULD KEEP AN EYE ON BLAIR.

kingofcali626 said:

i agree with you fred ,tip sanders gets no respect he had that awful Marshall team in 2 cif semis and blowing out Blair every year and he leaves and they still blow out Blair he returns to coach Blair and shuts out Marshall and its because that Marshall is awful not because he can coach give the guy some credit.

coach said:

Thats not coaching, thats blair playing a very awful marshall team plain and simple. And as much as I may not like south pas they are no way under rated. With Flynn and Parrish returning and this being there 3rd year on varsity they will compete with the majority of they're opponents as long as they both stay healthy because if one gets hurt its over.
