SATURDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK, Week 1
I know the Times ranked Oaks Christian No. 6 in the southland, but after seeing them run out to a 57-0 halftime lead on Muir, I'm at a loss for words. Jimmy Clausen is absolutely unbelievable, and with 12 other Div. I scholarship players around him, this IS the best team in Southern California. And they'll prove it next week against St. Bonaventure....Okay, other games of note.
St. Francis blanked Arcadia in what reporter Andrew Campa said could have been much worse. QB Luke Collis was real impressive. For Temple City to score 35 points in a 35-14 win over Arroyo is very impressive. You knew the Rams could play defense, but 35 points???? Look out Monrovia. And speaking of Monrovia, they turned a 7-6 deficit into a 42-12 rout...As for shockers, didn't ever think South Pasadena would beat San Gabriel or that Gabrielino could defeat San Marino after stinking it up a week earlier...
But of course, we want to know what you think??? Click for the scores
Dominguez 69, Pasadena 0
Temple City 35, Arroyo 14
Oaks Christian 60, Muir 6
Los Altos 49, Rosemead 0
South Pasadena 25, San Gabriel 20
St. Francis 24, Arcadia 0
Gabrielino 9, San Marino 7
Monrovia 42, Duarte 12
Workman 13, Keppel 6
Bosco Tech 33, Salesian 14
La Canada 14, Crescenta Valley 8
Rio Hondo Prep 14, Bakersfield Christian 7
Alhambra 53, Glendale 0, from Friday

Clay is Bruce's older brother... and played 19 seasons at OLB for the Cleveland Browns. High pain threshold must run in the family.
I only know MV's staff from afar... but they produce quality players at every position... enough said.
I think you mean the '94 Bloomington squad, but I get the point.
Is Clay Matthews related to Bruce? Now Bruce was a beast. He redefined durability.
How would you compare OC's coaching staff to Mission Viejo's?
Isn't it a joke that OC is in last year's Division 9? Last year they were in what is now the Mid-Valley division... Covina had better buckle up their chin straps.
Rosemead getting crushed 49-0 (42-0 @ halftime) comes as no surprise (minus Deon Sumler, etc.)....
Pasadena ran into a GRANITE wall...'nuff said...
Arroyo: no surprise facing Broadnax; and being -Salmon -Leon..... the Knights' offense must step up huge come MVL to capture crown
Gabrielino: as written in the Star News clip just posted--- beware of the FG.
Beware of Fabian Gutierrez.

Concur! Watch them get CRUSHED by Alhambra --- Brown + Babb....
Okay, just talked to Wheeler and Peterson is fine. He tweaked his knee and probably could have played, but Wheeler didn't want to take a chance...
Poor John M, he really has no chance. From what I understand, Peterson suffered a knee injury late in the first quarter and didn't return, which is why he only had 11 carries for 39 yards...I'll let you guys know his status for this week when I find out...
Hey John H...
What happened to the steak talk? Fred and I will be waiting at Ruth's Chris on the second Friday in November.
NY...
Sorry for the delay... Oaks Chr is the best football team I have seen since the '95 Bloomington team. Everytime they touched the ball, special things happened:
A. Clausen's throws were always to an open receiver. He released as soon as he hit the last step in his drop. BTW - His numbers, as gawdy as they were, could have been much better... he was pulled with 3 minutes left in the FIRST half!
B. Tyler, the running back, was very fast and extremely physical. I especially liked the way he attacked the blitzing LB at the line of scrimmage.
C. The O and D lines were fit and very athletic. There wasn't one sloppy belly on the field or on the sideline. They came off the ball with flat backs and routinely finished their blocks with authority. The D-line twisted inside every snap and systematically throttled the offense of Muir.
I was very impressed with this team... but don't forget, ex-NFLers Clay Matthews and Wendell Tyler are assistants and have their boys on the team.
BTW - Seven seniors already have verbal commitments to D-Ia schools... with more to follow on Signing Day!
Big M, did Muir really shut down OC's run game. You were there. I have no doubt that Muir is one of the better teams in the area and will do well in their league and division. They simply ran into a buzz saw. However, when I read that a team was winning 57-0 at the half and pulled all its key guys early, I have trouble beleiving that any part of their game was lacking.
Okay as impressive as O.C was against Muir our local team was the polar opposite. As usual execution was terrible throughout the game especially in the first half. Numerous penalties hurt Muir which is nothing new to the program. Of note delay of game, off sides, how about roughing the extra point kicker three or four times. No discipline from Muir as usual. What is sad to see is the talent has steadily dropped off in recent years. Also a lack of size and depth continues to hurt us. But where is the local talent going? I hear amongst Muir followers in the stands that kids are transferring out of the district or being recruited away to the private schools. How sad that our once powerhouse teams that produced numerous players to D1's and the NFL are resembling a average h.s team. Prediction:Muir record this year sadly 6-4

Said it once and i'll say it again, San Gaybriel is overrated. Don't be surprised if more of the same occurs in the following weeks. Coach better spend more time working on his "much improved" defense. HA! 25 from South Pas. Give me a break. Congrat's to GHS for their first win of the season. Go Eagles!!!
Gabrielino never gets enough credit. Lopez and long time assistant Steve Swanson do a great job! Oaks Christian University...have any of you seen that campus????
Another tidbit! Head Coach Bill Redell (OCHS)attended San Marino and was the CIF player of the year... ('55 or '56) Good guy and great football team!
muir shut oaks running game down. and the refs said, they have never seen a high school team play like that ever. and that they(oaks) should be playing college teams. so, all other teams watch out for muir and remember when i told you #24 phillip morrow was a monster ! look how many tackles he had on oaks.
I watched the TC/Arroyo game and even though I am biased, I could not figure out whether TC was that good or Arroyo was that bad. In the end, I think it was just that TC was in the zone, and Arroyo is not yet ready to play a full game. They will get better as the year progresses. TC will probably be either #1 or #2 in RHL. Looks like the TC/Monrovia game will be the one to determine the top RHL spot.
Wow...Oaks Christian is impressive. To score 57 points against a team as athletic as Muir puts them into a whole different category. Maybe they should be playing APU and the other local colleges instead. As for the So Pas score, it's great to see the hard work coaches Smith and Hertel do on special teams pay off. In addition, an opportunistic defense that had a great game plan nullified the high flying Matador passing attack. Go Tigers! and maybe they can put a wrinkle in the traditional Rio Hondo power structure.
I am surprised by Arcadia too but after watching the game. St Francis controlled the line up front and destroyed Arcadia's O-line. St. Francis is the team to beat in the SGV. Watch out.
1)The Monrovia score is no surprise.
2) However, the Arcadia score definitely surprises me, especially given all the hype they have gotten. I know BigM recently suggested that St. Francy is among the elite, but dang...I guess so.
3)The Muir game was very lopsided, sadly so. I was beside myself afer reading Fred's previe. It was very strange to learn that Muir's coach hoped to play a ball control game...It is scary to think of how explosive Oaks Christain must be if MUIR hoped to play ball control. Fred, do you think the '86 Muir team was 54 points better than today's Muir team?
4) It's great to see South Pas serve notice.
5) Congrats to Moooney and TC. You guys not only bounced back from a tough loss last week in the scrimmage, you guys also beat a quality Arroyo team and stuck it out.
San Gabriel had an ugly outing as they shot themselves on the foot all night. Commiting four turnovers and numerous offensive holding penalties. It started to seem like a blowout in the first quarter,San Gabriel dominated offensively and defensively. Held the tigers to only 60 yards total offense in the first half. The Tigers took advantage of every turnover and scored easily while SG was down on the error.
