Atually a better QB than Ainsworth, with a rocket arm!
Nathaniel Jacquet DHS
Is Darryl related to Ernice???
Darryl Carter of St. Francis High School. He is one of the hardest working kids in football, offense and defense. You yourself said he was a leader.
I'll bet the Roledator (Kimmee) can also kick field goals.
The Freshman female golfer from LaSalle. Voted MVP for the league
Suppose that a great kicker were to impact his games more than any of the QB's or RB's around. Obviously, a selection of that magnitude would not be made in isolation.
Burbank, call her by name. She is .... The Roledator
Thoughts on Kickers: It's a rational conclusion, one that I believe we could all make, that great teams all have great kickers; especially at the high school level. Sean Kelly has been putting up fantastic numbers and deserves all the accolades he gets. However, I cannot agree that a kicker should ever get player of the year. While his effects (a kicker) are felt throughout the game, i.e. forcing a team to drive 80 yards, the abilitiy to open up the offensive coordinators playbook because of a guarenteed 3 points in the red zone, or even the punting game. But, in no way does a great kicker effect the game more than a great QB, RB, or even and especially an O-Linemen.
Please, I'm not disrespecting Mr. Kelly. He's great, one of the best kickers around. But please stop the Player of the Year jokes.
Fred...player of the year is coming from PHS volleyball!
BigM you should be in P.R., your convincing me to make Kelley the player of the year.
O-Cat...
Seth Lewis was the kicker who made that long game-winner against D.Bar... he went on to kick for Cal Poly SLO.
Adam Summerell played Safety for the Cats at the same time. He earned a baseball scholarship to USC... and is now on the Orange Bowl Cmte in Miami.
--------------------------
Jim M...
The NFL kicks off from the 30... not the 35. Wayne Nunnley (SD Chargers RBs coach and Monrovia alumnus) says that Sean Kelley could kick right now in the NFL. You may want to stop the kicker talk... but the fact is that Sean is way ahead of the field in position-specific ability... that includes Willie and Lavelle. Their numbers are not comparable on the national scene.
I wont go as far as to call it an upset, but seeing the TC La Salle game, makes me wonder if any of the La Canada put a helmet on the man in from of them with a different color jersey, TC could have a real bad night. They may be big, but they sure are slow....putt, putt, putt....and most of them play both ways. Where's the gatorade?
Good looking out BM....You are absolutely right.
sorry that was 3 words...
On the kicker comments, 2 words - Kyle Delahooke, Maranatha.
Observant, I like your point, but I think you referenced two different people.
Seth Lewis kicked the field goal against Diamond Bar while Adam Summerall played baseball. I beleive that is correct. BigM would know.
Sean Kelley could still put it into the end zone, just as Michael Scott was able to from beyond the 35. Monrovia has had a great kicking tradition during the past 14 years. Ben Mendoza deserves a lot of credit for that as well.
Jim, if you were facing Peterson, would you honestly prefer to try to pin him into the 20 on a kickoff and risk having him return it all the way, or would you prefer to make his team beat you down field on offense for 80 yards?
Tom S. my post was two part. I wanted to give credit to the AOTW as well as talk about kickers.
Now if were talking about the kicking game that's a different story. I fully understand how important it is to work on that part of the game of football.
I would much rather have a kick off type kicker who specialized in on side kicks where our team could recover 60% of the kicks than a kicker who could kick the ball in the end zone if I had a stud defense.
I for one hate seeing the ball sail into the end zone even once during a high school football game.
College they kick off from the 35 and so does the NFL.
The rest of the team plays on a 100 yard field like the college and pro guys why not have high school kickers kick from the 35?
Enough about the kickers.
What is the upset special of the week?
Anyone?
Jim, I think Sean Kelly played a vital role in the La Canada Game. Not allowing any run backs for your great runner Peterson. That is something most people overlook in the bigger scheme of things. It would be like a running back always getting the ball to the 50yd line on the kick-off returns. Defense is sometimes the best offense. Especially when you can contribute from fifty yards out and score. We had another great kicker that went on to play baseball for USC who scored a last second field goal against Diamond Bar wheras that was Diamond Bars only loss in two years they were the Division 2 Champions. I could'nt hurt to have that as your secret weapon, especially in the post season.
Jim: Mark Love is a running back who's posting some big numbers. 110 points scored and 1,016 yards rushing so far. I think you confusing him with our star kicker Kyle Delahooke.
What was the name of the last great kicker in this area that went on to star in college and in the NFL, CFL,WFL or any other league for that matter?
Educate me on the kicker thing.
I'm not being mean I really want to know.
Congrats to Mark Love my hats off to him. However you guys have got to stop with the kicker thing. Kicker's are part of a team and I get that, but keep it real. If you ever want to see how great kickers are when it comes to being at athletic just watch them when they line up for a PAT or Field Goal and the snap is muffed and all hell breaks lose and they make every effort not to touch the ball. It's actually pretty funny but never AOTW. I'm sorry about the way I feel and I'm sure all kickers are great guys, but I can't give the Rodeo clowns the buckle for best bull rider. It just doesn't make any sense to me. Not to say I don't have a special place for kickers in my heart.
Thanks Fred and all who voted for Mark Love - a deserving Athlete of the Week and a great leader on the field and off, looking forward to the Brentwood game this week.
No disrespect Jim...I read some of your blogs and you made even the hardest of the Monrovia group take notice to Lavelle Peterson. But Football is an 11 man game and every part of that 11 has it's strengths and weaksness. Sean has never displayed any weakness at his position and the players respect him for that. He will have just as good a chance playing on Sat. and even Sundays as Lavelle if he stays with his program and he's a 3.9 student as well, Wayne Nunnely who happens to be a Monrovia Grad is now the Defensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers took one look at Sean and told me that this kid could play in the NFL right now.
Jim M...
I have never knocked Lavelle... in football or in the classroom. Why bash a kicker? Do you have an axe to grind? Did the kicker in school go out with your girl?
The fact is Sean AND Lavelle are excellent choices. By my promotion of Sean, I am trying to educate the WSGV fans of a national talent that they may have never heard of... Lavelle, deservedly, gets weekly pub.
Jim, I respect you and what you do for Lavelle... don't make me change my mind because of a juvenile attitude toward kickers.
Jim,
I read that article. I think I'm pretty certain where your loyalty lies, whether or not you are voting with your brain.
A kicker as AOTW I hope that never happens. Kicker of the week I can understand, but come on 33 carriers (a new La Canada record), 354 yards rushing (a new La Canada record). Did I mention he is the only running back in the State to do that this year so far?
Pleaes if a kicker had to run through the La Canada line with the ball he would wet his pants.
Sorry I'm still voting with my brian instead of my school loyalty.
Observant, you're name is defenitely appropriate. I've seen Kelly play once, and Mr. Automatic is just that. We'll see him on Saturdays on ESPN, probably Sunday's too.
Say BigM..I think that Sean has Much bigger respect coming in his future than waiting to become star news player of the week. He is in a class of his own. I think he has been the reason Monrovia has had more sucess on defense this year. No one will start past the 20 after a Monrovia kick off. Try running down the field for Eighty yards being chased by guys much faster than yourself, Ask Lavelle Peterson. I makes for a more confident defense throughout the game. Keep in mind that his fans love him and thats really all that matters. Who cares what his favorite song is, or whether or not he eats cheeseburgers or sweetpotatoe pie?....He's a great Kicker and anyone who has had to play against him knows that.
You mean the Kimmee Roeleder girls volleyball team. But even the Roledator won't be enough to lead them to a title.
as far as Kelley goes, look at his stats, most in nation made. look at the number attempted. And I believe Jose Camerana made 56 and 58 yard field goals last year, and NOT against shoddy teams like blair where he has all the time in the world to kick it. Camarena made i think five 50+ yard field goals last season, so kelley deserved the recognition he got two or 3 weeks ago, but aside form that, give someone who desevres it the player of the week
The Pasadena Girl's Volleyball team. The SGV's best hope for a CIF title.
Matt Moreno TCHS. Excellent receiver and provides many PAT's. A key point in the RAMS offense.
I can't believe that I'm the only one speaking of Sean Kelley...
Can someone give me a reason why a kid who LEADS THE NATION in anything, isn't an automatic?
Eric Willm - Arcadia...
168 yards receiving 3 TD's
A bunch of tackles on D...
from the men's side:
i think Luke Collis should definately be a athlete of the week and also an athlete of the year contender because of the impressive numbers he's been putting up despite the losses to Crespi and Bishop.
on the women's side:
i think that Julie Herrera and Sam Orlandini of FSHA should both be considered as well because of their consistent and impressive play.
How do you get approved by the site owner to comment....Thanks
one more thing...Monrovia made a conscious effort to run away from Jimenez all night long (like 75 % of running plays)...we ran right by Arnold a number of times thanks to Jimenez. Thanks for making the great point Big M. M-Town's squad is pretty sick, I'll give you that. But head to head is the way to decide...and Jimenez punished Arnold.
Crazyqube is right on, I was at the Monrovia/LS game. Jimenez was still playing TE that game, he stonewalled Arnold's pass rush and dominated him on run plays. One in particular where he blew Arnold about eight yards off the ball and then flatbacked him. Arnold looked like he was out of his league, and although I could see he's a tough kid and decent player, against Jimenez he was DEFINITELY out of his league.
I think you are a bit out of touch with reality. I don't know if you can spell PANCAKE, but if you like I will send you a copy of the footage!
crazyqube / trkcoach...
No offense to Jimenez, but Albert Arnold is the best DL I've seen this year... luckily they went head-to-head (the best way to compare lineman). Arnold dominated the LOS in the Monrovia/LaSalle game (as he routinely does). He leads his team in tackles... on the same defense that held heralded RB Lavelle Peterson to 0 TDs. How many DL can make that claim?
Jim M...
Is Peterson's record a La Canada record? RHL record? CIF-SS record? I'm not being a smartass... I didn't realize his performance was record-breaking.
Lavelle is good... hell, he's carrying LC by himself... but Sean Kelley's FGs lead the nation... and his 55 yder Friday night was one of the most amazing things I've seen on a high school field. I don't remember when/if anyone in the Valley ever did that.
With respect to Peterson, Sean is the AOW. His nation-leading stats cannot be ignored.
He is an Ivy League-quality student... and a D1a-quality kicker... what a dilemma (sarc.).
La Salle's season was changed completely by an offensive switch of positions by Alex Jimenez from TE to tackle. Most of the yards that the running backs have gained since then have been through his hole, not to mention that the qb has adequate time to throw. Can an OL guy who is also a monster on d-line be the player of the week. He would get my vote. No flashy stats just good hard playing and he's the saviour of season for L S football.
Check the stats from the Temple City game forward when the change was made. The offense and production of the running backs improved greatly after that. In the Verb game he was superb.
You guys make the decision-making so tough. But I love this new weekly thread because those players who don't make it to print, are at least acknowledged by all of you.
Look is simple, new record of 354 rushing yards on 33 carries and three touchdowns by Lavelle Peterson. If you have someone better I will vote for them. This week is the biggest no brainer yet. A 5 and 1 South Pasadena team comes into LaCanada last Friday and Lavelle left players all over the field with his cleet marks on their chest.
Thats almost 11 yards a carry and they other two touchdowns that LaCanada scored you had 11 South Pasadena guys jumping on Lavelle as the Quarterback ran a boot untouched and another play was a 43 yard reverse where 11 defenders were trying to get to Lavelle.
Simple it's Lavelle Peterson this week.
The La Salle vs. Verb performance was a gritty performance, by the whole team! But just bto clear things up the game winning touchdown run in by Nathan Bury came off Alex Jimenez's block, who knocked Akeem Ayers 3 yards into the end zone and the dfensive play denying Verb their 4th down conversion to end the drive and the game that was again Alex Jimenez #70. There may be a lot of debate who is the best running back in this highly competitive division, but there is no question who is the Division's No.1 Offensive and Defensive lineman? It is: Alex Jimenez. Just ask Verb, TC, Momrovia, Cantwell, Oaks Christian, Ontario Christian, etc...
Eric Willm of Arcadia skilled on offense and defense.
ERic Willm of Arcadia scilled on offense and defense.
trkcoach53 -
Mark Love consistently post great numbers, not just against Campbell Hall, his only low point - RHP, let's give the small schools, and their players credit when the opportunity presents itself.
Im a monrovia fan, but once again peterson gets my vote on this one, i mean monrovia was expected to put up 50pts. on blair not 24 but 50 becuase our offense is so explosive . but the way peterson destroyed south pas i mean come on..... you gotta give it to the kid
No disrespect to Maranatha athlete Mark Love, but Campbell Hall is 1 - 6. I think nearly everyone that has played them had a big game.
Bury and Peterson played against quality Mid-Valley opponents, at least it seems so based on the records.
Mark Love - Maranatha. 99 yard run for TD last Friday against Campbell Hall, totals for the day, 221 yards and 4 TD's on 15 carries.
Regarding Lavelle Peterson, he had 33 carries 350 yds. and 3 touchdowns. He accounted for 86% of his teams 405 yds. on offense. My support for Bury as player of the week would be that the Verb v LS game was a more closely contested game. The yards were hard earned. Both players had great games.
According to Max Preps stats. Nathan Bury of La Salle had 26 carries with 203 yds.(7.80 per carry), 3 receptions for 33 yds. and 3 TD's.
I am a true Monrovia Fan, but I give credit where credit is due. I Like the style of Lavelle Peterson, very few running backs can do what he is asked to do. Without a good passing QB he makes the game a living hell for the defenses. He reminds me of some of the good running backs at Monrovia High...(James DeCuir, Obie Graves, Paul Hewitt...etc...Just strong and quick. No disrespect to LaSalle but I would'nt even mention his name in the same breath with your running back Nathan Bury. I was at both Monrovia games and Nathan Bury was much slower and way less likely to break away to score. Peterson will have a field day against TC....So La Canada Linemen, Lay down some blocks and your night will be a piece of CAKE!
I've seen every La Salle game so far, Nate Bury would be averaging 2 yards a carry without Jimenez
Nathan Bury... 192 yds. 3 TDS against a fast D.. he was dragging these guys..
lavelles got nothing on him.. id take bury any day
lavelle for sure.
he destroyed us single handedly, and i played against the TC defense, he will destroy them too.
trust.
Bruin Eagle
It's called athlete of the week, so we just focus on the past week's performance. And he had 160-something yards against Monrovia (too lazy to look it up right now), and they play Temple City this week.
Yeah, what did Lavelle do against Monrovia or TC?
Anybody have a good idea for an online question?
Lancer Double
I have been getting rave reviews about Jimenez. I was talking to a guy today who said he was the difference maker in the Verbum Dei game.
------
BigM, you got me on that one.
------
Hmmm, nobody has mentioned Lavelle Peterson. All he did was run for 360-something yards against one of the top teams in the division.
------
"but there are several others chasing him..."
I have news for you, Fred... the whole NATION is chasing Sean Kelley.
Eric Willm tds many tackles and only a junior he is some what of a sleeper but he is breaking out
Nate bury
Arcadia's junior Eric Willm had a breakout game with 138 yrds rec. and 3 tds and on defence he had 16 tackles...i believe it was all in the first half
Alex Jimenez from La Salle, this guy is under everyone's radar but La Salle has moved him from TE to Right Tackle and has run for 500 yards on the ground the last two weeks, 80-90% of plays off his rear end. Not to mention the havoc he's wreaking in on defense as an end. If you haven't seen LS this year, come check this guy out he's absolutely bruising people and it's been the key for La Salle's win streak.
Hey Pasadena Guy:
You beat me to it. Yes, Mark Love. Beside this weeks stats against Campbell Hall he leads the Alpha league in scoring with 110 points so far and 2nd in rushing with 1,016 yards.
So shout it out, Mark Love for Athletic of the Week
Mark Love from Maranatha. 15 carries for 227 yards! 4 TD's, one of them a run for 99 yards. Come on, give the small school's some love Freddy!
Bloggers, this isn't just a football question. If anyone has suggestions for girls athletes of the week, we want them too.
Big M, you're right about Kelley, but there are several others chasing him for kicker of the year honors.
Neil Favor at St. Francis, and Chandler Blevins of South Pas are jsut a couple.
eric wilm arcadia
. . he took the load off of walker and stepped up and showed that arcadia isnt just a one receiver team. well deserved breakout game for him
Sean Kelley - PK (Monrovia)
FGs - 2 for 3, long 55 (only miss was for 57)
XP - 6 for 6
According to MaxPreps, Sean leads the NATION in FGs made (10) after 7 games.
He needs more recognition... or is there a NATIONAL leader I don't know about at one of the other Valley schools?
