Game Over. Lavelle Peterson. 32 carriers and 354 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Jim Mulligan said:

Cat: Good points and well taken. I've given up on wanting what is best for Lavelle as far as his coaching in high school goes. All I can do is make him the best he can be off the field and make sure he is in the best shape he can be in to compete in the RHL.

If La Canada threw a middle screen I think I would soil my shorts. They run the same 4 run plays over and over againg. I think the offensive play bood has 10 total plays.

It's not very hard to see the talent La Canada has, it's just a shame they can't get a game plan that makes sense.

It's God's will so we will let it be and go from there.

Good luck to the Cats the rest of the way. I thought it was a class act for your head coach Steve to allow me on the Monrovia sideline during the game when my own head coach Rich Wheeler won't allow me to be on our home sideline for any game.

Steve's a class act and I wish him and the Cats the best of luck the rest of the way.

JIMBO

Say Jimbo, I am a Monrovia Fan, But I like Lavelle's style. His only setback tonight was he had to contend with guys with his build and guys with his speed running after him. I think he should run over the rest of the RHL. The QB Job has a lot of issues as well. Maybe the Coach should let Peterson Play QB and see what happens. TC did when Reed was there, He scored 5 TD's Against a better Monrovia Defense at the time in a loosing cause. James Davis was not on his game that night but when he is I would give him the edge over any Back in the RHL. Monrovia's coach had to settle the score with his disciplinary actions against some of the players in the first half of the game. If you recall #2 Sean Sparks was not in the Back field giving the starting job to one of the Linebackers, AJ Taylor. And Potts favorite target #8 is sidelined with an injury, When all is said and done Hopefully they will all be back for the Finally. Who Knows Maybe La Canada and Monrovia will meet at the Big Game. I still see you guys killing the rest of the RHL, simply because of LaVelle, Just dont let him get Injured. His Running style is prone to injury either on himself or someone trying to tackle him.

Jimbo said:

Even thogh La Canada got out coached, out played and out scored tonight against Monrovia the best player on the field was Lavelle Peterson who had 193 yards on 22 carries.

I just wanted to give some props to the La Salle Football team who has taken their lumps this season, but put together a great game on Sat. to come out on top over undefeated and highly regarded Temple City. La Salle is the best 1-5 team around, and now is poised to reak some havoc in the Camino Real League, starting with undefeated Cantwell on Friday night.

FredJ said:

Lavelle will probably rush for 120-150 against the Cats, and he might add a couple touchdowns. But the Cats are going to score at will. I think Jim's prediction will be close to the final outcome.

BigMLover said:

Jim...

I agree that the Cats will win this week... but, LC has given them fits since Lavelle has been there. The game will be close... and Peterson will get his numbers.

It should be a great night of football in Monrovia Friday night.

Jim Mulligan said:

Lavelle Peterson had 197 rushing yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns. He accounted for 90% of his teams total offense in a losing effort.

Prediction Monrovia 35 La Canada 13.

What about Mark Love from Maranatha?

Damien fan said:

Mark Mendrun is the best player. He means the most to his team and is probably the best leader as well. He has a rifle arm , runs for TD and scrambles exceptionally well. He's being recruited by Boise State. Damien clearly has the best player in the valley and should be compared to all the greats that have been mentioned.

A strong running game actually helps the passing game.

Arcadia has also played 4 games.

Potts does remind me of Vince Young a little as well. Whats even funnier is how Ponce "slightly" resembles Matt Leinart. Not that night but the two weeks since that game he has been playing as well as anyone in the West SGV including Collis.

I'm still sticking to my guns with Robison at Arcadia for MVP but I think as a passer Ponce beats out Potts.

Johnson said:

I think the talk between Nick Ponce and David Potts is great!. I think both QBs have a strong arm. But in talent wise I will have to go with David Potts, he has shown alot more than jus a drop back QB. His ability to escape preasure and get out the pocket reminds me alot of Vince Young. and as for the statistics go..

David Potts - 38 - 72 for 625 yards .528 comp percentage and 5 games played

Nick Ponce - 35 - 60 for 566 yards .583 comp percent. and only 3 games played

Arcadia threw the ball 60 times in 3 games and Monrovia threw only 72 times in 5 games!

My point is this: Monrovia does not throw the ball as much as Arcadia because of the high-quality RB in James Davis. But if they were to throw it more often I think Potts would be atleast in the top 10 QBs in SoCal.

POTTS FOR HEISMAN!!

Mike Honcho said:

Peterson is the best back in the area since Gary Beck and the Blair pair. All teams key on him, putting 8 in the box and he still averages over 10 yards as carry. Not to mention he already has returned 3 kickoffs and punt returns for TDs and has had 3 TDs and about another 150 yards called back due to penalties.

jheurkins said:

Lavelle Peterson

Every team concentrates on Peterson with their defensive schemes and he still excels. If La Canada had a little more depth, there is no telling how many yards and touchdowns he would get.

Jim Mulligan said:

All I can say is thank God the sports writers get out and see the games and the kids that play in them. It makes me feel better knowing the coaches from Monrovia and Temple City give Lavelle more respect than the boys who comment in these blogs.

Lavelle Peterson's last two games include 9 touchdowns and over 525 yards rushing on 47 carries with an average over 11 yards a carry. It is amazing that you guys still can't give him any love.

All his ever done in his football career is win. Heck, he even help the hapless La Canada Gladiator Jr. All American Midget team win it's first Conference Championship in their 35 years of being.

That team won every game by 35 points or more and never scored a point in the forth quarter.

I guess the kids who work hard and play even harder and keep their mouth shut and always give all the credit for their sucess to anyone but themseleves is really not the kids you want to back now a days.

Shame, becaues this kid is a flat out stud who actually cares about everyone else first.

By the end of the year you all will learn how to appreicate him and his talents because if he stays healthy he is going to leave a mark. He is as nice off the field as he is vicious on the field.

And lets face it the game of football is played a one speed and thats vicious.

Player of the year - either Davis or Potts,
and if you had a most improved based on the past year of play, from what i have seen now I think Mike Flynn has improved the most because if you look at last years games he didn't really throw well or wasn't a huge threat to run but now he is making things happen

Face in the Crowd,
I have seen Nick Ponce play. He has spread the ball around to other receivers, not just Walker. He has natural QB movements that would fit any college program. Tall Kid with a live arm.

Potts is a great player but even better person and has stuck it out with the Monrovia program. Most kids would have transferred. He shows alot of character.

As of right now.

Potts for Heisman.

Dont count out David Potts, the 6'5 210 pound QB for Monrovia. I think this kid can go to any school around here and get the startin pos. (with the exception of St. Francis)

Dont you think if Monrovia didnt have a 2 talented runningbacks Potts would have over 1,000 yrds right now?? And not to down-grade Nick Ponce but, if Kevin Walker wasnt on that team i dont think he would be as good as everyone say he is.

Potts has had young recievers his whole HS carrer and to throw for over 1,500 yrds the last two seasons I think that says alot about his character and his selfishness. He's a great team player.

MY VOTE IS FOR POTTS!

GO CATS!

Without having seen every one of the players on this list this year, right now I would definitely say JJ Davis.

Why? Because he is electrifying. I have seen him twice so far this year perform runs that were truly next level material. He is a very patient runner with some great moves, drive and escapability that make him hard to bring to a stop, and he also has that extra gear when it counts. And he does it on both sides of the football too. Let's not forget that Davis is a pretty talented defensive back.

As Fred himself has stated, David Potts really has matured tremendously over his previous 2 years' performances. But at the end of the day, Davis makes the plays that you remember game in and game out.

All players on this list are deserving of attention and any one could turn out to be the best. When you say "Heisman" I think of a guy who deliverse in big games. I'll reserve final judgment for the end of the season once I've personally seen them all perform. But my eawrly money is on James Davis.

what about kris robison, arcadia?

rb, wr, pr, kr, cb extraordinaire. have you seen this guy play? he's too smooth. "k-smooth"

As far as running Backs are concerned Davis gets my vote, just ask the teams he's played against. He is just a winner, plain and simple. His running speaks for itself. He almost single handedley beat the West Covina team in the second half of that ball game. I think that garrison needs to give him more first half touchs because in the second half of ballgames he is just a monster. He reminds me of Walter Payton, He runs with extreme confidence and he is very strong in the leg dept. I think he has what all the other backs on this page lack, not putting any of them down but when you see him play you will get the message. Having Sparks as his counterpart makes him just that much more confident, It's like having twins who can play at a much higher level than the compettion. Sparks would start for any other team in the Rio Hondo league and have around 700-800 yrds by now. My vote for Best running Back is Davis.

JOSH PARISH.

If so pas had half the o-line of tc or monrovia he would be there. 3 of parishs touchdowns have been brought back because of penalties, mainly from the o-line. The o-line is young having just one returning starter but still parish deserves some credit.

TCscout said:

This should come as no surprise, but I think that David Potts has shown so much more maturity in this his senior year at MHS. Just last year He could have just given up this game, he had more interceptions than touch Downs. And for those Monrovia Haters that is what was prinmarily the reason for the down side of the last two years. But this year he is very poised and very confident, He has included his running game in his arsenal of offense. From a scale of 1-10 I would certainly give him at least a 9. His size and speed and arm strength will get him into a division 1 college and from what I was told his grades will help him stay there. I myself wondered if his maturity would ever come about because kids his age loose confidence but he has made a 360 degree turnaround in his game and with that combination he makes his other teamates shine with their productivity. Potts for Heisman.
