SATURDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK ...
Monrovia 21, San Marino 7
Give San Marino a lot of credit, they gave the Mid-Valley Division's top-ranked Wildcats all they could handle. The Wildcats coaches felt fortunate to walk away with a two-touchdown victory, especially considering that the Titans failed to punch it in from a yard out early in the third quarter. The Wildcats running game left a lot to be desired, with Davis and Sparks failing to combine for a 100-yards. But David Potts had his best game of the season, and they can thank him for pulling it out.
Is it Halloween, or the infamous BigMLover in disguise?

A healthy Broadnax is a dangerous Broadnax

Temple City 31, La Canada 28
What more do you want, Broadnax carried 42 times for 205 yards and three touchdowns, and Peterson finished with 181 yards and three touchdowns. But the game ball goes to Rams coach Mike Mooney, who made a gutsy call.
With the Rams clinging to a 17-14 lead after the Spartans had built momentum by rallying from a 14-0 deficit, the Rams faced fourth-and-nine on the Spartans' 33 with 9:41 left. After burning two timeouts, Mooney put the game in QB Riley Saxons hands, and he delivered again, just like he did against South Pasadena. Saxon threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Andy Hebblethwaite - who was sandwiched between two defenders - for a touchdown and a 24-14 lead that proved to be the difference.
Get ready folks, the Rio Hondo League championship game is on.
Temple City (7-1, 3-0) at Monrovia (7-1, 3-0) next Friday for the big prize.
Click below for Friday night game.
Temple City 31, La Canada 28 (That's how you execute a game-plan)
Muir 21, Crescenta Valley 18 (Why was this game so close?)
Pasadena 38, Glendale 6 (Only local team left that can stop Burroughs)
St. Francis 37, Alemany 7 (I dunno folks, I think they have to go back to No. 1)
Bell Gardens 16, Alhambra 6 (There goes another Almont League title)
Arroyo 27, Rosemead 23 (Panthers still can't be Knights on the road)
Burroughs 28, Arcadia 13 (Apaches rally comes up short)
Schurr 31, San Gabriel 0 (Matadors have all but thrown in the towel)
Montebello 35, Keppel 0 (What did you expect?)
Gabrielino 21, El Monte 15 (Finally, yours truly called this one)

New York, Monrovia and Temple City have had their share of exciting games, but they have also lost big to TC before! It is by no mean a One Way Street! This game will be decided by who wants it most and that comes down to playing mistake free, executing plays and knocking the opponents on their behind. As they say the Proof is in The Pudding, we will surely know tonight who has the bragging rights. Good luck to both Sides!
those were the days Observantcat, that the soccer programs could hardly register any athletes, funny how things change!
It's funny you mention the 70's, That was when Monrovia was at it's best, We just played in the 3A division and TC played in the 2a Division, We used to make fun of Duarte for Losing to TC all of the time. Back then I played Pop Warner football during Monrovias first year having a team. Our first game was against TC pee wees, Jr. Midgets and Bantams, We swept TC and That was an indication for the high school not to want to schedual any upper division games against Monrovia, They were satisfied playing Duarte, Rosemead, and others that were mostly give-me's at the time. I think that had Monrovia not gone through such a tramatic coaching change back then we could have beaten anyone from 77 through79. Those were the years we had super fast athletes, and fielded an all state track team.
Philly B,that's where I cut my teeth, playing against the likes of Lawrance McCutcheon and such!
Al clegg i believe. trust im not callin out the eastern league crazyqube, i just know thats a really big game out that way. i have alot of friends that are from east LA and they went to those schools. and their was a special on the game on FSN so i know alittle bit about it
i believe thats when my old principle was the head coach over at temple city and then left to take on the coaching at monrovia i believe, but please dont quote me on it, because im going off memory of old yearbooks
That was before Monrovia joined their league.
Don't worry Philly Cheese they will be there sporting their Green and Gold!
You calling out the Eastern League in City, good stuff. The resurgance of the Temple City Rams should hold out for the next years to come and we can look forward to a good match up each year. In the 70's they were the dominating team in the valley with a few CIF titles under thier belt.
Just out of curiosity, hows the crowd attendance for temple city when it comes to away games. i hope its better than la canada or better than arcadia fans after the halftime show. i want everyone from temple city and monrovia to be their so everyone can see this game. i guess you can say i want this game to be like garifeld and roosevelt. i know it wont be like the turkey tussle but something close like that
Philly is right..I grew up in TC and talking mess was never a problem for TC dudes.
Philly is right..I grew up in TC and talking mess was never a problem for TC dudes.
Reed is a sick athlete and Mooney found every way possible to get him the ball. I don't blame him. He had to.
Can you imagine if Akil Harris had been in that situation? I'm not sure if any of you have ever seen Akil hit, but it was something pretty scary. Anyway, in a Temple City system Akil would have been a ferocious saftey, returned a bunch of kicks and punts for touchdowns and carried the load on offense. That's what All-Americans do in those situations.
This is getting exciting. TC is definitely the dirtiest player this Monrovia guy has ever played against. They CERTAINLY were not as witty as some of the teams I went up against later, but they were the worst cheapshotters. Typical bullies. I love kicking the crap out of bullies. Because once you punch them in the mouth they start crying. Then you can really go to work.
yeah observant but its not going down like that they have broadnax and we have davis, sparks, thompson, rufus, sherick thomas. and on top of that gonzales is really developing as a real good receiver that runs good routes and has very god hands. he doesnt light up the stats but he makes catches where it counts. i'll say he will be the x-factor because im sure mooney will put 8 or 9 guys in the box which leaves gonzales one on one. if he has a good night then. it will be a long night for t.c.
Okay observant, since you put it that way.
Ok....Fred, thats like saying I like Fred(the sports writer) But dont compare him to Mike Sondheim (LA times writer) I think your great and If you worked for the LA times they would think you were great too. If Davis was on TC he would be a clone of Reed. With the Blocking and the whole game surrounding his presence I think a lot of teams would have to worry, Including Monrovia.
Tcguy u act as if temple city is a bunch of good samritans and that their good sports...... get out here wit that tc talks as much as we do. of course they dont have the courage to say it to our face but trust they talk. when did sparks ever go to north field talkin trash. im sure sparks was provoked by those uppity temple city fans. they think their so above us. i remeber during desmond reed era my best friends mom is alumi and she told me all the things they were saying back then so i know for a fact TC can do some talking themselves. dont think for one minute that i believe you fans are angels becuase ur not....your rams. we will see who comes up on top friday night.
Honestly observantcat, i wouldnt compare davis to reed. but i would compare peterson to reed, just because they both have that breakaway speed not saying that davis slow because he's not. Temple city will bear wittness to that on friday but i just think their style of running is a bit different to compare the two backs
Observant, I love James Davis, but that's a lot comparing him to Desmond Reed.
Hey TC Guy
Did Mooney make him an offer?...
Well yeah, you guys are right, there was 'hype' for La Salle, but most of you were rooting for TC when that week came up, so whether or not it was hype, we all had are expectations for TC to win that one, but hey, we probably needed that loss, although I was more hoping for our guys to lose to Alhambra/Rosemead, La Salle was a surprise. And if you want to point fingers about what side is popping off about this and that...you let Sparks know that you don't come into North Field, on TC's side, talking Trash about us on Friday night, I'm sure Garrison didn't teach that one right Philly B? We'll see at the end of night who comes out on top.
Observantcat,
the funny thing is that desmond played every position that night against monrovia and t.c. still lost i believe 42-28. so if t.c wants to even think about an upset in which i doubt that will happen saxon and broadnax better both play their AAA game friday night because its going down
For the TC guy....I will guarantee you that Monrovia will come to play. If they play their A game It will be a long night for TC...If they play their B game you might come close but still wont win.....and since I dont see anyone on the Monrovia sideline suffering any injuries after the SM game they might just take everything out on TC. It's guys like you that make Monrovia want to prove their superiority. I had a conversation with your Best runningback ever at TC and we laughed about the game that he played at Monrovia. He said the coach wanted him to play every position that night and he was just dead tired after the game. He said he felt like a chicken with his head cut off. This year we have Two A player Backs and roughly 3 B player backs for TC to Contend with and not to mention a AA Quarterback. When you think of Desmond reed, think James Davis....that should get you in the mood for friday night.
How great is the Temple City vs. Monrovia game going to be. Real players, real coaches who respect their parents, real game plans that make sense. I wish I could be there for sure, but duty calls and I have to go to the Burroughs vs. Pasadena game. Please keep us posted with the happs.
Can anyone smell that smell. I smell Lavelle Peterson going for 400 yards this Thursday at John Muir High School against Blair.
Just having some fun.
I hope all the games live up to the hype and everyone stays healthy for the last week of the season.
Good luck to Temple City and Monrovia. I'm picking Monrovia just because of "one" still sore ankle on Temple City.
BigA its more like little a. you lose just face it. i mean you had the refs on your side(yes i attended the game) stop cryin. u probably didnt stay after halftime anyways. that was so sad. i mean they treat that band like last years USC f.y.i. in the band world their really not that good. i can name schools for days just as big and better musicality than arcadia but this is a prep sports blog so i wont go there but know that i can.
Tcguy,
i played under garrison, we are all taught to speak with the scoreboard as well, so dont try to make monrovia look like a bunch of thugs like arcadia tries to do or make us look like show boaters just because we have more team speed then tc. know ones makin predictions but know it will be the best game of the year. oh yeah last year the game was at your house and this year its at ours, and everyone will see this game because its homecoming night and everyone will see monrovia is the real deal. i mean when was the last time t.c. beat us at our house. please tell me. because it seems like who ever has homefield wins league not ever time but most of the time. not sure bout the 04 team but i think we took it that year i dont remember that one but i remember all the games played at t.c we lose so. we'll see on friday night
thank you, BigA its more like little a. stop your wining you lose with the refs on your team( yes i attended the game) after halftime was sad when it came to the crowd
No chip, Fan...
Just the crumbs of the crumbled... peskily throwing themselves on the shoulder of my jersey.
And save the accolades for Saturday morning... we haven't earned anything, yet...
BigMlover, I see you still have a chip on your shoulder.
Congrats in advance for beating TC, only if you guys played the way you did during your non-league schedule.
Monrovia 34- TC 14
Open up the air game.
TCguy
There was plenty of TC hype with TC supporters poppin off until La Salle burst your bubble, you complete joke.
Just like 10 years ago when TC was 8-0 and ranked #1 in the West. They came into Monrovia and got dismantled by our backup quarterback and a bunch of hungry juniors and a couple key sophomores.
Big A...
Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda... If you were at the Monrovia-Arcadia game you were one of the twenty who remained after the band finished its halftime show... embarrassing... M-town filled the stands... Arcadia is more interested in its award-winning band.
The Cats WON that game... your crybabyin' only shows your inability to see superior talent. Try again next year... until then do your best to keep the season respectable.
-------------------------------------
TC Guy...
I'm not sure what "hype" you speak of... Monrovia-Temple City is the game we all have been waiting for. I said it before, I'll say it again... the Monrovia-TC game is the best intraleague rivalry in the valley. This year's game is eerily familar... almost every time these two teams face, the league title is on the line. Good luck, TC.
irwin maddox,
it was an 11-8 sp lead at half time not san gabriel 20-0. are you crazy?
Philly B...did u even watch the Arcadia vs. Monrovia game? Did u not notice the fumble on the one yard line by Arcadia which should have resulted in the touchdown. Ponce missed a wide open tight end on the 2 yard line which should have also been a touchdown. It should have been 21-7 Arcadia going into halftime. That would have resulted in Monrovia passing the ball which is their weakness. I must admit..James Davis is awesome though. He is a tough kid and VERY talented.
i wish i could be in two places at once....La Salle/Mary Star and TC/Monrovia.
its clear that in order to make the playoffs you have to earn it in league i dont think that to many coaches are going to be concerned about how many carries their running backs are getting if they are trying to get into the playoffs. now any smart coach is going to get the ball into their playmakers hands however they can. now you can use formation or personnel groupings to be creative but the bottom line is to get the ball into your playmakers hands as often as you can. now if that means lining up in i formation and running the same play over and over to do it then thats what u do.
Look, I'm real tired of all you M-Town fans, speak the hype (like always) and it'll end just like last year. TC and M-Town have weapons, but who wants it more? I've played with Mooney, and we were taught to speak with the scoreboard and not with our mouthes. Go Wildcats...Go TC, either way, it's going to be fun and especially memorable.
Paul,
Sometimes a great coach realizes that he must give the ball to the same guy every time. The creativity can come through finding different ways to do make it work, since the opposition likely knows who is ultimately getting the ball.
Steve Belichick is Bill's father. Steve is a long-time assistant coach at the Naval academy. He is revered as one of the best scouts and football minds ever.
Alright uh, I think this "San Gaybriel" is being cursed for that whole transfer mess with two guys from Gabrielino?????
Walnut W 20-14 (huge upset)
South Pas L 20-25 (blew 20-0 lead @ half)
Eagle Rock L 8-40 (got crushed)
TC L 6-18 (wow they actually got that close to TC wow)
San Marino L 12-35 (SM is legit)
Bell Gardens L 6-28
Alhambra L 33-46 (strongest game yet for Mats)
Schurr L 0-31 (as expected)
Mr.Sandwich, doesnt Ganesha HS have the same problem as well?
=============
why is keppel sooo bad? is it possibly the coaching?
or that schools not meant to have good athtletes?
Posted by: mrsandwhich | October 28, 2006 12:03 AM
Belichick (any relation to the coach?)
It's not "great" coaching because even my mother would make the same call and she knows little about football. Better coaching (in my opinion)---become a little less predictable aka more creative) and preserve your running back for the playoffs by running him 25% less often.
if that player produces and your team wins i dont see how its not
LancerVideo
Sometimes the reference is strictly personal and the sender is directing commentary to a specific individual as was the case with the reference to my son "Trevor" who plays for RH Prep. It wasn't blog-worthy (is that a new word?) to expand beyond that reference and include everyone.
I would like to bring up a point regarding the athlete of the week nominations. I think the nomination should be for an extraordinary accomplishment or effort. I will not compare my son to Broadnax or Peterson but an 8 yard average per carry is the same whether the back carries for 20 carries or 40 carries--granted 40 carries is a little taxing! And another thing. Is it really "great coaching" when 80 or 90% of your offensive plays go to the same individual?
I don't know what Kyle Delahooke did this weekend other than kick a winning field goal for Maranatha however he usually plays both sides of the ball and kicks and punts. That's a complete effort. I'm sure some of these guys, including Potts could play both sides of the ball pretty well, but could they add kicking and punting to their repetoire as well?
i meant san marino and la canada for the coin toss. and my pick is san marino to really give it to south pas. sometimes i dont preview before i post.
anonymous,
I have to give it up to san marino on taking out south pas. i mean the way they hung with monrovia(whether they played their 'A' game or san marino give it all they got aginst the number 1 team in the division) i cant see them losing to a team that was shutout by la canada and only put up 30pts. against blair. they play a real physical defense which is saying alot because i felt before league san marino didnt really play anyone tough. i guess you can say i underestimated that team. I give props to D.R. Moreland and that ball club. they came to play last thursday night. I feel that i should come to the famous coin toss at the end of the season between san marino and south pas. because we can only send two teams in the "Really Horrible league."
New York, he was a 2 time All American.
unfortunately Jimenez is a senior this year new york and only has a couple of teams left to mistreat. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to the trip to Mary Star's Daniel's Field where some more punishment is sure to take place.
Folks, this is a great blog. I have a suggestion to make it even better. Please don't assume that us readers know what you are talking about when you post. References to player's first names only, with no school attached, like the post talking about "Trevor", or someone nominating an athlete of the week without mentioning his school, only makes it more difficult to follow. It happens the most when someone is answering a previous post, but having to scroll up every time to find the previous post is time wasting.
So please mention the school and last name.
Did I mention that this is a great blog for area football fans?
8's,
Does he have any elibility left? By the way he mistreated TC it sounds like he'd be a good fit. I'm sure we could find him a spot!
Crazy,
That is exactly how his brother played. Do you know him? How did he do at Georgetown?
So who is going to win this week between the bitter rivalry of South Pasadena vs. San Marino? Can SP still squeak in a playoff berth?
New York, yes Tommy is his younger brother and one of the unsung heroes on the line. He is a no nonsense gritty hard hitting player. His play on both sides of the line is exemplary. In regards to the M O Line, no doubt they have the talent and are well coached. However, Monrovia did spend the whole night running away from Augi's brother, just as much of the competition has. Good luck on Friday night. Both teams have the ability to score points.
Will the TC or M D answer the call? That will be the difference.
I was a bit shocked of the final score of the monrovia-san marino game. we have the talent and speed, and we should of lit up the scoreboard. But i still say that the league will be between monrovia/t.c. Remember while evryone is complaining (including myself)about the score of the game t.c. didnt kill san marino either. What was the score 30-7???? so we went nine points less and put up only 21points. davis and sparks didnt have spectacular nights. but like new york said when you're number one everybody plays their 'A' game to beat you. USC beared witness to that sadly. If they put santa clara above us at the number 1 spot i could care less less as well as garrison. This weeks game will be the biggest game of the year it has so much implications on of course the obvious league title as well as playoff seedings. Fred dont lose faith in monrovia on overtpowering t.c. yeah its a rivalry game but i feel that if t.c. puts eight in the box like san marino did. then it will be the potts show on friday. the only thing i hope is that monrovia stays focused this week given that it is homecoming week for us. i hated having to play t.c on homecoming night because they could actually beat us. I loved playing blair though because we knew we had that game. there was know way we were going to lose against them on homcoming night.
to all those arcadia fans: Burroughs 28 arcadia 13???? let me guess you guys are gonna say that it wasn't close because. they put up 28 and monrovia put up only 27??????? come on now lets be real, big bad arcadia aint so big and bad without baily. it is what it is.
traxbac, you want to diss everyone for showing allegiance to monrovia, and say that we're hoppin on the band wagon could it be that we all graduated from the high school that you suppossedly hate. Stop the hate yes we didnt blow out san marino...... so what we still won. I mean those arcadians are still saying we barely won when the score was 27-13 so say what you will it doesnt matter but when monrovia is in the semi-finals and la salle(assuming thats your school because ever since we blow them out 52-19 you've been hating on the cats) will probably not get past the first round. STOP THE HATE ONE THE CATS
We all know that football is the money sport in high school athletics but the true test of a schools athletic program is all the sports it participates in. I doubt that any local school can come close to what Maranatha is doing with its fall sports program.
Here are the latest CIF polls
Football: 5th place, and I’m sure going up in the Northeast division
Boys X-Country: 5th place Division IV
Girls X-Country: 2nd place Division IV
Girls Volleyball: 4th place Division IIIA
Can anyone top that????
Fred,
Good reporting. Im glad ur not speculating on anything, and im looking forward to perhaps a blog on the incident on friday?
But also I think everyone would enjoy a look into the other accusations made on this blog...whether they are true or not, because either way it is important.
Im not sure if you will have time and I know its a lot to ask, but im sure everyoen would enjoy reading it.
New York...you just wish he played for M-Town ;)
traxbac,
15 out of 16 teams who make the playoffs end up losing. This year, Monrovia (a one in a million city) has produced a 1 in 16 Mid-Valley playoff team. Coach Moore brought home a title in the spring and Coach Garrison will bring it home this fall.
I don't know where your allegiance stands, but mine is with Monrovia. Always has been, always will be.
Thanks Tom, and it's not as much work as you think. It's fun filtering through all the comments, there's a lot of good information and observations being made. Believe me, it helps me report on the area better.
--------
Concernbfan, I will find out on Monday if any action is being taken following the incident in Friday's game, and give coach Mills a chance to explain what happened. As far as everything else you accused Mills of, I don't want to speculate, it's not fair to him. If there's anything that needs to be reported, it will be. Until then, he has the benefit of the doubt as far as I'm concerned.
New York,
You are absolutely correct, the firm of Sparks, Davis and Potts do need a VERY athletic line. The cats are good and will not lose a game until the playoffs. Unfortunately, that will not leave any time to recover. Sorry M, BigM, little-bitty m, and all the other Ms and bandwagoners.
Hey, not to change the subject but I think it’s time we all give Fred a Big THANK YOU for giving us all a venue to support, complain, ask questions and what ever else. I’m sure this guy has nothing better to do with his time than to keep watch on what goes on here. I went to the Whittier Daily News, Prep Section blog site today and it doesn’t compare to what’s going on here. We all need to let our fellow teammates, parents, coaches and other know that there’s a place to go to and find out what other people are saying about our local high school athletic programs.
Fred,
It sounds like we need some investigative reporting.
everything i said is true ! and i wish people would not cover up things ! that is why we are having problems with so, many kids in sports now. admitting the truth is the first step in solving the problem. fred , i have no reson to lie. and i went to p.h.s , i want to see them do good ! the coaching staff is a bad influence , talk to some of the kids and parents mills will only lie to you. go ask the school news paper. there is some problems that need to be fixed and i just dont understand that the only thing people worry about on here is how there school is playing and who is better than the other school. we have to make sure we have coache's that set good example's for the kids point blank. kevin mills is not it.
Crazy,
Does Tommy have an older brother who plaid d-line at Loyola?
You're right, some of us have strapped helmuts on and coached those who have strapped helmuts on beyond high school.
Some of us take o-line play very seriously.
Riddle me this, and I'm sure it will be settled this Friday when Monrovia plays TC, why is there no mention of Monrovia High School's line play? Potts would not convert all his third downs without protection. Davis does not shred Arcadia and La Salle without big holes.
So before Augi jumps on and talks about his younger brother as the best downlineman in the division, just remember which line is athletic enough to make Davis, Potts, and Sparks look good.
Fred,
Some time ago you were looking for topics? How about the role of club teams for various sports? Does club competition make some high school competition less significant?
the tc offensive line may be a large one but i have to give it to the arcadia offensive line though being undersized like their 5,11 left tackle and 5,9 left guard if you watch them they are all athletic and football smart you can tell they are well coached
New York you are right, we are all amateurs here, which is what makes this fun. However, there are some of us that have strapped our helmets on beyond the high school level and can ascertain from observations. Albeit some of us, including yours truly are fans of one team or another which creates a definite bias. That makes for good intentioned trash talk.
Fred, the best O line in the area is up the hill from TC at La Salle HS. They dominated both sides of the TC line. You may not have seen the game, but I did. A shout out to: Matt Mendoza, ever improving center, the guards; Tommy Quigley and Bill Preston and the tackles Casey Hilland and the most dominant O lineman in the Division Alex Jimenez. Give credit also to Coach Desmond for an off season weight program has has these boys fit and strong!
Thanks NY
Great stuff for parents and grandparents. Typical RH Prep game. Dominant defense coupled with a well-balanced, evenly distributed, offensive attack. Good to have Galvan back.
That Maranatha game sounds like it was a real roller coaster. You just had to know that Delahooke's foot would figure prominently at some point this season. Looks like the stage is set for an exciting close in the Alpha league.
My Vote for the player of the week is that freshman from SF i told you he was going to have an impact Fred can you quote me on that please? If SF plays the same way from here on out no one is gonna beat them.
How can anybody judge who has the best offensive line? There are too many intangibles that are inherent of such a unique group of people. Certainly none of the amatures on this blog can grade them out with the respect that it deserves.
Paul,
Congratulations on Trevor's big game. He got some well deserved ink from the Star News.
kevan walker mvp against burroughs
joe wiggans mvp vs arcadia
two very gifted players and will go D1 easily ((walker is only a junior))
good luck to both the rest of the season
unbelievable game at Brentwood Saturday afternoon. Maranatha came out flat at the start of both halfs, but dug deep and when the faithful thought it was over they came to life and pulled it out. For us that were there it was truly an amazing win, and the OT was sweet - Kyle Delahooke kick was the highlight of the game.
Fred, I hate to disagree regarding O Lines. The best O Line in the Division is in Pasadena: Tommy Quigley, Casey Hilland, Bill Preston, Matt Mendoza and the best O lineman in the Division Alex Jimenez. They are from La Salle!
Arcadia played tough against Burroughs. If they didn't have the turnovers they might have won. They ought to give the big soph fullback the ball . He ran over people last year as a freshman. Arcadia does not seem to know how to use a fullback in their offense.
TomS, all I know is there was a bench clearing brawl near the end of the game and it was cancelled. On Monday, I'll make some phone calls and see what happened.
------
Congrats to Maranatha, the end of the year is looking like we'll have the Prep and Alpha decided on the final Friday.
WOW:::
Maranatha 31 - 28 over Brentwood!!!!!!!!!!! in over time. wish I was able to be there. Now if Whittier Christian can get by Brentwood we have the game of the San Gabriel Valley in two weeks. Fred, now you've got to believe in Maranatha. Not just as a nine hole golf course but as a contending football team. GO MINUTEMEN
Wow Fred, Yes those are some pretty harsh remarks from concern4fbfans but I still want to know. What happened at the PHS vs Glendale game? Will the events that happened come out? As a graduate from PHS in the 70’s, I’ll hold off on the actual year, wow I’m old, I’d like to know. If the fight started from the PHS side there should be repercussions that should throw some players off the team. Fighting can not be condoned. Let us find out what really happened.
Bud Man, I can answer that, Temple City has the best offensive line in the RHL, and arguably the second best in the area behind St. Francis.
Those who just read Concern4bfans allegations, remember, we don't know that any of it is true, and I don't know all the circumstances that happened on Friday. I won't comment further until I've talked to coach Mills myself.
I'll allow posts that criticize coaches, but if they start getting too personal, that's when it stops!
Fred: I have a good question for next week?
Who has the best Offensive Line in the Rio Hondo League? Especially with the two power houses T.C. and Monrovia meeting next week.
first , i would like to tell
crencenta valley's x-football
coach eberhart what a wonderful job he did with the kids and it is sad
when you take time out of your schedule for 14 years and you get idiots that think they know every little thing. people , we have to keep a good coach ! on the other hand , pasadena high school should fire the whole coaching staff !! especially coach kevin mills !!!! 2 fights
with glendale and burbank. what are they teaching the kids ? how did mills get the job anyway ? after all that stuff that happend at blair with his i dont have to listen to anybody attitude. he has did alot of bad things while coaching at P.H.S this year.
1. locked 2 students in locker room & let them fight ! one of them got his jaw broke !
2. put's kids back down on J.V from the varsity for 3 or more games if they miss anything when it come's to being on his team. with or without a valid excuse.
3. show's extream favortism for people he can control !
4. tell's the whole team to fight if any opponet does something dirty on the feild.
5. was put in P.H.S news paper for using the schools money for
un-counted things.
6. has the worst mouth you could ever hear when mad at a
concern parent.
i could go on & on but, why is he still there at P.H.S ? i hate to see the turkey tussle if he is still the coach ! he has no class & he is making all the schools in pasadena look bad. how many people on here think kevin mills should be fired OR quit coaching football period ?
i think crencenta valley's former head coach eberhart should get the job at P.H.S
let's vote !!!
eberhart for head football coach at pasadena high scool :
1 vote !
If Monrovia can throw the ball and catch the ball then Burroughs vs Monrovia might be a close one, but Burbank would easily defeat Monrovia.
Props to Arcadia for a well coached game against Burroughs.
Congrats to Star-News' Andrew Campa!! He was the only man (1 out of 4) to predict ARROYO over rosemead at B.L Bergstrom Stadium.. GOOD JOB CAMPA! He also knew that rosemead cannot beat the Knights at ARROYO..not since 1990!
The whole situation going on at PHS is really unfortunate. Fights, kids leaving, coaches in trouble, etc., etc. etc. Look, everyone knows Mills is an excessively cocky and aggresive guy who has no business coaching on any level. Don't forget what happened at Blair before he left. If these guys are fighting with schools like Burbank and Glendale what do you think those idiot coaches are going to do when it comes to playing Muir.
All right, so what's the details on the fight that stopped the Glendale vs PHS game with 1:38 in the forth quarter? Anyone there?
BruinEagle
That's what im hoping for :].
That San Gabriels losing streak would bring them in with low spirits that Keppel would be able to squeak in a game.
crossing my fingers.
-----
And thanks SB, that was a nice explanation.
Ok, I seen both teams play. Monrovia Fans, Observant Cat, bigMlover, and New York... Monrovia would beat Burroughs in a close one. I am very firm on this. I am giving credit where credit is due.
Burroughs isn't a great team. It was Arcadia's game to win, but committed too many turnovers.
People tell me, what's wrong with Pasadena? Isn't this the second fight of the year. Mills shouldn't be allowed to coach anymore if he can't control his kids. It makes me sick to my stomach.
And, I hope the Pasadena coach staff reads this.
Poor Glendale, they get beat on every week, then Pasadena has to kick them when they are down. NO CLASS at all.
Read this from the St. Francis game story. Can you believe a freshman leading the Knights? Pretty impressive stuff.
-----
St. Francis High School used an opportunistic defense and 14-year-old freshman receiver Dietrich Riley to defeat visiting Alemany High, 37-7, Friday night at Friedman Field in the first Mission league game for both teams.
Riley, who finished with three catches for 108 yards, caught touchdown passes of 45 and 40 yards on the first two catches of his varsity career to break open a scoreless game in the second quarter for the Golden Knights (6-2, 1-0) .
"You know Dietrich Riley is a guy that could have been playing for us all year," St. Francis head coach Jim Bonds said. "His mother and father thought it would be best to for him to get acclimated to the school, academics, and play some freshman football. I was thinking by playoffs we'd get a chance to bring him up."
But last week, when starting receiver Kevin Garcia was lost for the season to a broken ankle, the coaching staff talked to his mother and the proper forms were filled with the CIF-Southern Section office.
Riley was cleared to play ahead of schedule and produced against the Indians (4-4, 0-1).
"We knew he was an athlete and we knew he could play, but he surprised even our coaching staff," Bonds said.
---------
Whoa, I don't want to start sensationalizing a 14-year-old, but when is the last time someone that young got it done on this level?
BruinEagle, your distaste for San Gabriel is why Gabrielino and the Mats should be playing every year. That's no paper rivalry. There's a genuine dislike between the two schools, and what better way to slug it out than on a football field.
We're two weeks away, but any thoughts on who's going to win the Turkey Tussle? This is PHS' best chance this decade. It's hard to imagine they've only won one Tussle in the last 20-years.
Congrats to Gabrielino for getting their first home victory ever. Making the playoffs should be their next goal. Also, just want to thank SG for keeping the losing streak alive. Nothing is better than waking up in the morning and looking at the Friday Night scores with another San Gaybriel loss. I love it! Now even their game against Keppel seems unclear.
SB, nice post. In basketball, coaches Hung Duong and Minnie Caluag do a wonderful job with the boys and girls basketball teams. They're always one of the best coached teams in the area, and manage to win despite being outsized by most of their opponents.
Mr Sandwich,
First of all Keppel is saddled with poor demographics (athleticly speaking)since Gabrielino opened up and changed that district's boundary lines.
It does not help that most of Keppel's student body's parents or even themselves were born outside of the US. That does make it difficult to compete in sports like baseball and football, however, they (Keppel) tend do well in the league in basketball, golf, tennis, and badmiton.
My guess is that overall, Keppel's students tend not to be quite a big as some of the neighboring schools. Also Keppel's enrollment is close to 1000 fewer students than Alhambra High School, and they are in the same district.
The fact that Jimmy Riggio moved to Colorado (he could not pass up a job offer professionally, as he did a good job in making the program compete much better) was not a plus for the football program.
In my opinion, Keepel would be a much better fit in the Mission Valley League demographically and enrollment wise.
At least their students perform quite well on SATs, ACTs, and AP classes compared to the rest of their league's schools. I give the Keppel players a lot of credit for going out there every week and they DO wear ther team sweatshirts and lettermen's jackets to school.
The last place team in the league Observant? It was the league opener. Anyway, it was the most impressive win this week. That Alemany team you quickly dismissed nearly knocked off Loyola.
-----
Muir, now that's another story. Why they couldn't blow them out at home is a mystery.
------
Urworstknigtmare, you called it. I know that loss to SElm is really stinging now
All I want for Christmas is to beat rosemead!!! We did, 27-23. YES! Thank you Singiser! The true Knight fans never ever lost faith in you. YOU ARE THE KING! Protecting the house (B.L.Bergstrom Stadium) from the evil panthers since 1990...All-time series record is now 29-18-1 in favor of ARROYO... next year will be win #30..GO KNIGHTS GO!
Come on Fred, so you are saying that St. Francis after defeating the last place team in their league deserve to go to number 1?....Where are your scrupples. Ok..Monrovia had a week off and won by only 14 could have been worse, you were there. But we scored 33 points in the first quarter against the worst team in our league Blair...and we get's no LOVE??...I guess we will just have to beat the second best team in our league for you to give us total respect.....see you at the TC game.......Oh by the way were are all of the Athletes over at Muir? I guess they are waiting to play Arcadia for 3rd place in the pacific.
why is keppel sooo bad? is it possibly the coaching?
or that schools not meant to have good athtletes?
Hey Robledo! What did I tell you? ARROYO punts the panthers 27-23! Now we gotta have rosemead beat SEM for the three-way tie. GO KNIGHTS GO!
the burroughs arcadia game was a great one..burroughs scored on a fumble return for a td and a 10 yard run by wiggans early in the 1st. Then later Ponce hooked up with Walker for a long td but missed the PAT and it was 14-6. Arcaidia hung tough through the 1st half and gave up one more td goin into half 21-6. But the 2nd half arcadia came out to play football...finally. They were shuttuing burroughs down defensively and ill tell you if Kevan Walker isn't the best receiver in the area i dont know who is. He makes some catches i have never seen at the high school level. He easily was the life and spark of the apaches tonight but they couldnt finish in the long run. the game was 21-13 for a very long time and wiggans broke one with about 3 minutes to ice the game.
Apaches are a good football team but need to wrap up and make plays. They have playmakers and the coach needs to get them the ball more. I say they make the playoffs and if practice goes well these next couple weeks...they should make some noise. Congrats Burroughs

I knew sooner or later BigM, one of my upset specials would cash in.
Fred...
Good job on the Gab v El Monte prediction... you got me (and the experts at CalPreps) on that one.
congratulations st. francis!
what a wonderful homecoming game. dismantling alemany, the team that help loyola in check until the 4th qtr.
I suppose all of the mathmeticians out there would expect La Canada to destroy Muir based on the common opponents, but you all would conveniently overlook the parity of the Burroughs score and M-Town score against Arcadia...football is a great game and should never take into account scores against common opponents. Do you think the Patriots cared about margin of victory before they beat the Rams in the superbowl or Ohio State over Miami and so on and so forth...
Too bad CV didn't pull the upset. We could have had the Pacific title outright.
Temple City 31, LC 28
That score seems to be final from on the prep scoreboard.
Monrovia vs. San Marino is an overlooked rivalry. Furthermore, when you are number one, everybody tends to play their best game against you. In 1992, Monrovia was 0-5 in RHL and San Marino went on to the CIF Finals. San Marino was lucky to escape Monrovia when they played. In 1993, Monrovia was 3-7 and 0-5 while Temple City was 9-1 and 4-1, but with about two minutes left in the game and down 14-7, Monrovia drove about 95 yards (help me out on the numbers BigM) with Damon Griffin capping the drive with a circus catch for a touchdown. Then, we went for 2 and the win and barely missed it.
Remember, even the dominant 2002 team only beat San Marino 26-2 at our house and it was a very close score at half time.
My point, is that the better TEAMS win the close games, even if the heavy underdog plays outside themselves and has their best game.
One more thing, let's not get caught up in how other teams may or may not beat up on somebody else. Through all of this deductive reasoning, some numbskull could say: Monrovia over Arcadia by 14, Monrovia over San Marino by 14, Temple City over San Marino by 23, therefore TC would beat Monrovia by 9 and would beat Arcadia by 23, but wait...I don't think HSBC or BigA would agree with that last part.
the score is Lavelle 14 Broadnax 17 3rd quarter....hang in there La Canada
The live-update scoreboard on the Pasadena Star-News has shown Temple City 14, La Canada 0 in the 1st Quarter for over a half-hour now.
I'm guessing the 1st Quarter would have ended by now?
I missed Monrovia's first series of downs. But from that point on all I saw was Davis and Potts trying to go off tackle to the short side of the field. Potts was the X factor of this game and he really deserves the Game Ball. I sat with his Dad throughout the night and talk about his maturity as a Quarterback. By the way I was talking to Baldwin Parks running back who is related to someone on the Monrovia team and he said that he started to move-in with his aunt and Play for the cats at the start of this season. The guys over in baldwin park treated him like a steppchild (broke into his car, spray painted it, he said that he was seconds from just up and moving out here, most of his friends live out this way.)
If Burroughs blows it and loses to Arcadia and Burbank, the Burroughs coach will feel the heat big time. He's been whining about the Foothill League for years. Moving to the Pacific League probably saved his job.
Frenzy? Burbank will beat Burroughs and it's all cleared up.
Burroughs can be beaten through the air.
I hope Arcadia has enough to upset Burroughs tonight. I got the feeling talking to their coach last week that after beating Muir, they had one final big obstacle against rival Burbank. The Apaches might be able to sneak up on them and send the Pacific into a frenzy.
The Frontier League teams might have some home field advantages come playoff time, but I can't see any of them rolling into Temple City and winning a playoff game.
If it helps-I believe that La Salle would battle Santa Clara to win the Frontier League and they would beat Village Christian. I haven't seen LAB this year.
The Mid-Valley division is really difficult to read... Obviously we know about Monrovia, Temple City, La Canada, and South Pasadena, all ranked in the top ten. (And San Marino may even be a player) But who is going to come out of that league? We also know about Cantwell, (listed as others) which is horrible and will finish third in the Camino Real League and not make the playoffs. From the Camino Real we know that La Salle continues to get better every week after a horrible start, and that Verbum Dei has unmatchable team speed, either of the teams can do damage in the playoffs. The part that we don't know is how legit the Fronteir (Santa Clara, Bishop Diego, and Fillmore) and Olympic (Village and Valley Christian, and LAB) leagues are... The Mid-Valley Division playoffs are going to be very interesting
The fence is where you should be, Fred. That game (M v TC) is the most competitive intraleague rivalry in the Valley.
Big M, San Marino's No. 11 is 5-8 junior, Will Barbour, James Barbour's younger brother
A couple final thoughts from last night's Monrovia-San Marino game. I have new respect for David Potts. He might not put up the best numbers, but from a pure potential standpoint, he's a legit Div. I recruit. The 6-foot-4 frame, athletic ability and his throwing power are tops in the area. Now, I think St. Francis' Luke Collis is the most polished, but I can understand why there was a Utah State scout last night looking at Potts and James Davis.
------
Also, Sean Kelley is a wonderful kid. I talked to him at halftime, and he said he's been invited to the Harvard-Yale game for a recruiting visit. He's also considering San Diego State and UC Davis. He also couldn't understand all the fuss about him on the blog. I walked away thinking what a humble young man.
--------
Lastly, Monrovia lost some of its luster last night. They're not as dominant as I thought they were. You can credit San Marino for some of that, but the Wildcats should have been able to overpower them, but they simply couldn't get it done. After thinking they would handle T.C. easily next week, I'm back on the fence.
If Johnson catches those balls... the final is 42-7.
O-cat...
You missed a lot of plays if you think the Cats were conservative... hell, they opened the game with a reverse! The coaches tried to get Davis on the perimeter all night... even placing him out in the slot to receive quick hitch routes... the Titans had him spyed throughout the game.
The Titans had 8 in the box consistently last night... and it hurt us trying to establish a running attack. Thank heavens David Potts was ready to play! His conversions of 3rd-longs were what the doctor ordered!
...and whoever #11 is on San Marino, the LCB... he deserves a game ball! He single-handedly saved three TDs by continuously flicking the ball away from Daro Johnson in the endzone.
TO Big M....and the rest of the Cat Fans.... have you notice a bit of conservatism by the offensive coordinator or is it just me?...Monrovia did'nt try and use the wide side of the field all night against San Marino. Being a former running back I think that is why San Marino waw able to contain and predict Monrovias every offensive move. Monrovia has more speed than the average team but will not be able to show it trying to play Muscle ball. We need to have plays that are ment to get the defense mis-directed and that will open up the weekside. It looked like Garrison and his staff said lets just run at them and see what happens. I am really happy for David Potts and the game that he played. His confidence will put him right up there with all of the top recruits from this area. What do you think Fred?..
I forgot to mention I love the coaches at San Marino and they will build a great program that will compete for a leauge title soon.
As far as Monrovia's game last night good teams win those games and Monrovia's a good team, a very good team.
Congratulations to all the winners on Thursday. Having seen Monrovia play, I think they are not all that fast. They are fast compared to but not super fast. There cover DB's are average. SM had the perfect combination of a QB that can deliver a pass and WR's that run nice routes, which will always be a danger to the 'Cats. Plus there d-line is only about a B-. They can definitely be exploited through the air if you have skill at the necessary positions.
GlouCoach...
I don't know what Muir would have done... but, more importantly, I don't know whether San Marino would have treated the game differently. They always play us tightly... not necessarily by the score, but with their aggression and preparedness.
Kudos to SM for a good defensive gameplan... they still lost by two TDs.
Great to see South Pas pull it out. This definately was a trap game in my mind. I'm very impressed by the San Marino score, but not suprised. Those kids always play scrappy and rarely lay down. BIG GAMES next week. SP VS. SM and TC vs. Monrovia.
BigM you think Muir would have made that game against San Marino that close?
Fred as far as that Ref, pretty much he wants attention for himself, and that's the only way to get attention as a Ref is to do something outrageous like that. Dumb, but they have egos too I guess.
For those interested, there is audio of coach Garrison and D.R. Moreland on the Star-News website. Nice reaction from both coaches following the game.
BigM, the polls aren't just for discussion. CIF places a great deal of emphasis on them for seeding purposes. But you're right, they play it off anyway. As long as Monrovia keeps winning, they'll stay No. 1, regardless of what Burbank stated.
Doesn't the number 2 seeded team typically get the Friday night semi-final game while the number 1 seed plays Saturday, at a disadvantage to the winner of the Friday night game?
I didnt get the chance to go to the game tonight... but Im glad to hear our boys pulled it off and I hear that Potts had a career night.. Does anybody have his stats by any chance?...
I didnt get the chance to go to the game tonight... but Im glad to hear our boys pulled it off and I hear that Potts had a career night.. Does anybody have his stats by any chance?...
Santa Clara can have it... there is no BCS standings determining Monrovia's place in the final game.
The polls are for discussion purposes only.
Looks like Santa Clara takes over #1 in the Mid-Valley.
Remember what I was saying last week when the ref threw an unsportsmanlike flag against Muir for a player improperly wearing his belt at a crucial time in the game...
Well, that same white-capped ref did it again. In the Monrovia game on a fourth-and-one near the 50 with the Wildcats leading 14-0, he threw an unsportsmanlike flag on Monrovia for a player who failed to have his tailbone pad on. I guess rules are rules, but geez, why do they always pick crucial points of the game to make their point.
SO im gonna give my boys in sp a chance...
if they can pull out a win over san marino, monrovia will probalby be 4-0.. leaving the division like this
Monrovia 4-0
TC 3-1
LC 2-2
SP 2-2
San Marino 1-3
Blair 0-4
what are the chances of monrovia resting some starters against SP? While sp is playing for its play off life, homecoming night...
We will see if them SP boys have what it takes to win out and possibly slip in front of LC...
Hey Anonymous...
If you pick a name, people can respond to you... get it?
Monrovia - 21
San Marino - 7
Titans did a fine job defensively... routinely winning first and second downs. Potts was impressive in his return... I don't ever remember him converting as many 3rd downs as he did tonight.
Davis and Sparks had pedestrian numbers... but they both found the endzone in the 2nd quarter. There weren't a lot of possessions tonight... the primary reason for the low scoring output.
SM's offense played feisty... they had two big plays that were the result of poor one-on-one tackling. Neither of them were enough to put points on the board. The Titans finally scored in the 4th... but the Cats responded with a TD on their next possession.
The score was close... but the outcome was never in doubt.
Bit of a surprise by the score of the Monrovia game 21-7 but I feel that San Marino might have exposed some minor weaknesses.
Sluggish start to the game by the boys of South Pasadena, but they caught fire and showed passion overcoming a tough performance by the Blair Vikings
the score is wrong m-town won 21-7
Well, could SM be smelling teh upset of the year?...glad to see SP is back in the win column, even if it was ugly.
I think there is a panic underway at Monrovia. 14-0 at the half San Marino?
Sounds like Blair is better than I gave them credit. Six turnovers and only lose by 17...
Final score from South Pasadena- Blair 13, South Pasadena 30.
After a sluggish first quarter in which the Vikings (2-6, 0-3) jumped on the board first on a Devin Fuller 29-yard run, the Tigers finally responded.
Tigers running back Joshua Parrish opened up a 30-0 Tigers run with a 17-yard touchdown run. Throw in a couple of Michael Flynn (it was his 18th birthday tonight) TD passes and the Tigers (6-2, 1-2) rolled in the second half.
While Blair was in it midway through the third quarter, the Vikings could not overcome six turnovers. South Pas coach Ed Smith called it an ugly win, but I don't think he'll give this one back.
