SHOULD WE INCLUDE LOYOLA IN STAR-NEWS AREA COVERAGE?
CUBS TRADITION

I have received several emails and phone calls over the last several years about including Loyola in our coverage because its roster is filled with players from our area.
How true is this? If there are Loyola fans who visit our website or this blog, I want to hear from you. And to our faithful bloggers, should we invite them in?
As always, I need your input.

I don't understand why you people are trash talking Loyola so much! I'm not even a fan but I have to admit they are way better than our local teams.
No way Fred. Let the Cubs stay in their den in the Times and Daily News. They get enough coverage as it is on high school sports highlights.
Well Fred I think you got your answer, forget Loyola unless their playing a WSGV team and expand your coverage to adjoining league teams. Sounds like the people have spoken.
Good solution, Fred.
Thanks for the posts, this helps a lot. I think what I'm going to do with Loyola is keep an eye out for certain area players to feature and include their scores on this blog with the rest of Saturday Morning Quarterback. I think our San Gabriel Valley teams deserve the ink in the paper as far as game coverage, and when Loyola plays a local team, like St. Francis next year, we can certainly play it up then.
What do you think?
Oh great...now we have to hear from another Cub team that can't win the big one..."Ah one, and ah two, and ah three..."
Next year you will be covering Loyola for a game because Loyola Plays St. Francis. Thats going to be the game of the year for sure. bringing back the old rivalry. SF is looking for revenge on what Loyola did to SF's school last year.
My family lives in the SGV and I have a son who attends Loyola. I enjoy your coverage of the Local teams. It would be great if you all would be able to give us an update on their program from time to time.
Settle down there, KING...
I love the Cats as much as anyone, and we play good football... but so do others. Calling Loyola out and questioning the manner in which they play is laughable... you were right, "Loyola stays in LA, and we'll keep to the SGV".
Let's keep our precious print space to the local teams of the valley... regardless of where its inhabitants might play.
Loyola is in LA, not SGV. It is simple geography, but maybe you are all to stupid to read a map. Loyola stays in LA, and we'll keep to the SGV. Because at Monrovia, not only do we get a quality education, but we play football like men and not like pansys, as the before mentioned Loyola.
Loyola plays some games at Glendale HS, and also play teams that St. Francis plays, so maybe talk about them but don't include in the rankings.
Yes Loyola is is a downdown L.A. team, But I think you should cover them. They just don't have a few athletes from the WSGV, They have a lot. Their home games are also played at Glendale High School. I'm not even a Loyola fan, but I do believe in covering good football
Loyola is the most favored son of football and academics for many. They have regular coverage from many media outlets. Cover the WSGV schools and the schools that affect it, such as Verbum Dei in Santa Fe or other schools in the Almont, Alpha, Santa Fe or Prep Leagues.
To all.
I think most of you have it right. We have a hard enough time covering all our teams in the San Gabriel Valley. I would like to branch out and include more Mission Valley, Almont and Prep League coverage before covering teams out of the WSGV area.
And this will always be the main home for the Rio Hondo and Pacific Leagues.
Don't waste the ink on covering Loyola.
Who cares if kids from the western San Gabriel Valley attend there? Nobody forced them to go to Loyola and if they feel they need coverage... well, too bad!
It's a downtown school, not an SGV school. Tell them to look for coverage in the Downtown Los Angeles News. That's the local paper for their area.
Besides, it's somewhat of a zero-sum game. It's not as if there's endless room in the pages of the Star-News. If you're going to add coverage of a school in downtown Los Angeles, what coverage of schools in the Pasadena area are you going to cut back on?
The cubs have a wonderful program and play with a lot of courage. I would vote to cover them.
Jim M.
Realist,
I think everybody knows that PCC is the best team in the area... Loyola has a great program, but they are similar to a JC in that they draw from such a huge area.
With respect to HS football, Monrovia, SF and Muir are the best teams in the West SGV. Loyola is not even close in proximity or in enrollment limitations.
Fred, if we include Loyola it should not be in comparison to local teams. It should be relative to Mater Dei, LB Poly, and Oaks Christian, three teams not in our Valley.
I would have to agree with SB and suggest that rather than giving Loyola additional ink, why not allow some of the "other" schools (i.e. the prep, alpha, or almont league) get some press. Just a thought.
Find it funny that the Mission Valley League teams, which are a concern for many WSGV residents, was virtually being ignored, is considering Loyola who has little connection with this area.
I would rather have more coverage of the non area Almont teams, Webb and Chadwick from the Prep League (since Flintridge Prep, Pasadena Poly and Rio Hondo Prep are local schools), schools in Maranatha's and Marshall's League, some of schools in Duarte's League, or even the Burbank and Glendale schools (since they play with Muir, PHS, and Arcadia) make a lot better sense than Loyola.
I concur with some of the other posts about Loyola getting enough love on the local HS football scene.
FB Realist: From what I understand, Loyola use to be included in our coverage on a small scale. We didn't make a huge effort to cover all their games, but we covered some of the big ones, especially when they played Muir.
Fred, I have to say no. Loyola gets enough coverage as it is. They are a big time program so they get exposure in the Times and occasionally get games on FSN. The reason I love this blog and this paper is because no one else covers the Rio Hondo League. Everyone covers Loyola, Mater Dei, LB Poly. Just because the kids live in SGV doesn't mean anything. Go to a school in the SGV if you want press from the Pasadena Star News.
Loyola draws people from all over Los Angeles County. Plenty of their student-atheletes live in the South Bay, the San Fernando Valley and even a few from the Antelope Valley.
With that being said, Loyola isn't located in the WSGV. Local student-athletes attending WSGV schools should be the sole focus, IMHO.
Fred,
I for one would welcome coverage of Loyola even though I think the L.A. Daily News gives them plenty of ink.
I think at times, we on this blog become a little myopic. We think that Muir or Monrovia or St. Francis are the best team in the area. If Loyola was a Star-News team I don't think there would be any debate. Besides, I would welcome some D-I football for a change.
Not to rip Monrovia or Muir, but these teams play three of four decent schools a year. Just go over to Maxpreps and check out Loyola's schedule. That's a real schedule. There are no Blairs or Hoovers on that schedule.
Plus, didn't your paper once cover Loyola?
There are definitley guys from the WSGV who attend and play for Loyola, probably more common when one of the parents works downtown.
I have mixed feelings about including their coverage, though. On one hand, the school has some local guys. On the other hand, Loyola is downtown. Maybe I'll catch a game next time I have an early dinner at The Pantry...
