STAR-NEWS SUPER 20 MID-SEASON REPORT

GOLDEN BOYS

TOP FIVE SNEAK PREVIEW
1. St. Francis - 5-0 (No doubt about this. Knights have
played toughest schedule and remain undefeated).
2. Muir - 4-1 (Now that QB Lance Mitchell is growing into
his new position, the Mustangs are thriving).
3. Monrovia - 4-1 (I know it's a great year in the RHL,
but the Wildcats are head and shoulders above the rest).
4. Arcadia - 2-3 (I don't care what their record looks like,
they would beat everyone below on this list).
5. South Pasadena - 5-0 (They will get a chance to prove
they deserve lofty ranking Friday against Temple City).
Click below for No. 6-20

6. Temple City - 4-1 (With a healthy
Dwight Broadnax they should be second best in RHL).
7. Pasadena - 3-2 (The best Bulldogs team this decade may
still not be good enough to make the playoffs).
8. La Canada - 3-2 (Peterson can't do it all, but he might
have too).
9. San Marino - 4-1 (Hard to believe Titans have come this
far in a year. Compare scores and they're legit).
10. Rio Hondo Prep - 4-0 (I don't care what division
they're in. The Kares are the most fundamentally sound
team in the area).
11. Bosco Tech - 3-2 (Much improved from last year, but Friday's 38-7 loss to Cantwell was a step back).
12. Rosemead - 1-4 (After beating Orange, they should be
Mission Valley League favorites).
13. La Salle - 1-5 (Win over Mid-Valley's top-ranked
Temple City Rams has many still shaking their heads).
14. Alhambra - 2-3 (Once again, injuries depleting a once
highly touted team. But rumor has it that RB Anthony Brown
might be back on Thursday).
15. San Gabriel - 1-4 (Mats are missing Alfred Varela more
than they thought they would).
16. Blair - 2-3 (Prediction: As much as they have improved,
will still go 0-5 in RHL)
17. Pasadena Poly - 3-1 (Only team with a chance of beating
Rio Hondo Prep in Prep League).
18. Maranatha - 4-1 (37-0 loss to RHP will sting for a
long time).
19. Gabrielino - 1-4 (The only team that can boast about
beating San Marino).
20. Flintridge Prep - 2-2 (Two laps behind RHPrep, and a
lap behind Pas Poly).

Like most business people, I want every aspect of my business to be perfect. I know that this goal is unachievable, but it is nevertheless what I strive to achieve.

Dreamin. I love blogging. You all express your feelings the right way, because they are your feeling, focus on your blog it is great.

I am extremely impressed with your writing skills and also with the layout on your blog. Is this a paid theme or did you customize it yourself? Either way keep up the nice quality writing, it's rare to see a nice blog like this one these days.. :)

Maybe someone can clarify something for me. I'm just not getting it!

I absolutely agree while using first commentator, so it truly is not a fake. But I heard a lot of various opinion on this topic.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.

hoover and glendale to rio hondo and monrovia temple city over to the pacific. man that would be so tight because it wouldn't be as predictable as the league is now and will always be. yeah the league picked up alot of whens but when league play showed up it was pretty predictable. i knew if broadnax played in that game T.C. would not lose cbecause u would have to put so many men in the box it leaves your passing game so open. thats why Saxon was lookin like "Joe Montana" supposedly. so league will be as follows monrovia temple city and then south pas. the way its almost always been. playoffs this year will be interesting and unpredictable i still pick monrovia to go far in the playoffs but there could possibly be some other teams to go far too and then there might be rematches of league play in the playoffs. i cant wait

GloucesterCoach said:

Fred you want to move Muir and Arcadia to the Rio Hondo League?
I don't think teams like South Pas, San Marino, and Blair could handle that type of competition every year. It would be great for Water Polo, but basketball and baseball would be pretty tough. South Pas does compete with Arcadia in Track every year but I don't think they could handle Muir.
Having an 8 team league would also mean that all the teams wouldn't be able to play each other every year. You would still have arguements about whether Monrovia would beat Muir in a rotating schedule system. For what its worth, I would pick Monrovia over Muir this year as well. I think we'll be able to have a read when Arcadia plays Muir.
If you moved Hoover and Glendale over to the Rio Hondo, it would make a pretty weak league. La Canada would be favored to win league every year. The change would make the Pacific League amazing and leave the Rio Hondo league in dust.
I'm all about tradition and keeping the Rio Hondo League as it is. This year has been amazing thus far for the Rio Hondo League. So why change a good thing?

Burbank is accustomed to losing, usually going winless in the Foothill league. They probably get shivers down their spines at the mention of Santa Clarita.

Monrovia has done well in recent years against Burbank.

Big M, you know why I used Calpreps predictions, to spark debate, nothing more. It's a viable resource for information, not picking winners.
Question: Have you watched Muir play this season? Both teams have one quality win, Muir's over Burbank and Monrovia's over Arcadia. For me, the Burbank win was more impressive, even if it was in double-overtime. That team comes from the Foothill League and has done very well against Pacific League teams in recent years. But we'll never know. I hope both teams go on and win championships, and we can keep talking about this in December.
TC and Monrovia in the Pacific? I would like that. Or better, Arcadia, Monrovia and Muir in the Rio Hondo League to form an eight-team league. They could move Blair to the Alpha.
Don't get mad Vikings fans, just a thought.

BigMLover said:

Fred...

We could solve this argument my inserting Monrovia and TC into the Pacific... Glendale and Hoover need to go!

BigMLover said:

The common opponent argument drives me crazy... due to the age (read immaturity) of the common teenager, high school football suffers from a bad case of unpredictability. It's bad enough trying to compare two teams that aren't going to play... but when you add a common, third-party opponent to the argument, the unreliability increases to a factor of 10.

As far as the Burbank game goes, it took Muir 2 OTs to win by one... at home. Hardly a statement game. And their wins (Franklin, Jefferson, and Hoover) have a total of 2 wins amongst them.

Com' on, Fred. If you didn't think CalPreps was a viable resource, you wouldn't have included their input on the Predictions thread... right?

Philly B. said:

look fred i am tired of people sayin that it was a close lost. arcadia shut it down in the fourth quarter we got an interception basically on the one yard line. kevin hess would have not made a difference think how bad they got whomped on by burbank. that is a good team but they dont have speed like monrovia call it bias but it is what it is. but i will agree with you when it comes to Muir playin Monrovia. MOnrovia has team speed and all but they dont have enough to keep up with muir by far. that team has so much speed they could give some to blair and they would be real good. blair would whoop on monrovia. the cats would make adjustments and make a comeback in the second half but muir would be too much for them

FredJ said:

BigM, I respect your opinions on this blog, but you're not giving Muir enough credit. Do you know how good that Burbank team is that they beat? That Burbank team crushed Arcadia 42-14, and the Apaches had Kevin Hess in that game, a luxury they didn't have against Monrovia in a close loss.
And for the record, my name isn't BigMLover or Observant Cat and I didn't go to high school in the West San Gabriel Valley, so that does make me an impartial observer. I like both teams, but if I had to pick one, I'd take Muir.
And if you're going to use a Calpreps prediction for an argument, go ahead and print Calpreps' WSGV top ten so we can all laugh at it again..

BigMLover said:

Fred...

You give too much credit to Muir. I realize that they lost to one of the best teams in the history on HS football... but who have they beat?.. a bunch of City Section also-rans. They are about to get handled in the Pacific... and this talk about Monrovia v Muir, I agree with with O-Cat.

But, let's seek the prediction of a non-biased, third party...

According to CalPreps:

Monrovia - 21
Muir - 13

FredJ said:

For everyone here, I can't wait for the Temple City-South Pasadena game. I like both coaches, both programs and I think there's going to be a thrilling finish.
I would have never picked South Pas over T.C., three weeks ago, but I'm going with them now. Broadnax will probably start, but he hasn't practiced much the last two weeks. The Tigers are getting the Rams at the right time, and at home, have a huge chance of pulling it off.

FredJ said:

Observant Cat, with all due respect to Monrovia, Oaks Christian would be up 50-0 at haltime against them. And yes, Clausen and Tyler would be resting in the second half in their street clothes. Anyone would saw what Oaks Christian did St. Bonaventure would agree.

loyal tiger said:

Im done blogging untill Saturday morning. When we beat TC.

If we beat TC look for a 4-0 4-0 matchup with SP vs Monrovia for the League Championship.

HSBFAN who thinks SP will win 2 games in RHL, your crazy. Im not saying we would beat arcadia, havent seen them play cant comment, but I am saying that La Canada is a one man team in Lavelle, Blair is doing great but still not there, and San Marino will no doubt be a tough game but I think we will manage.

TC with a weak Broadnax, I say the first hit Parish lays on him he is done.

Parish has already taken out a more than a few players this season (See Hoover running back and Alhambra quarterback)

Monrovia 4-0 at South Pasadena 4-0 11/9/06, mark your calendars kids.

Observantcat said:

Remember Stang Fan that Oaks Christian Had that score in the first half of the game. As far as their coach was concern he might as well give his second and third string running backs a chance to play. That would'nt have happened to Monrovia, with James Davis and Sean Sparks they would have needed to keep their whole arsenal of players the entire game to hold them from scoring. I'm not saying Muir is not good, they just aren't as good as you may want them to be. I think most on this site would agree. Youngblood is good But pound for pound Sparks or Davis are both better, imagine that haveing two youngbloods in the backfield at the same time. Keep on being a Mustand Fan and I will stay a Wildcat Fan. I just think this year's team has all the weapons and would embarrass Muir.

Philly B. said:

first off. james Davis is da best back in the area by far i mean the only reason youngblood has da yards is because he's not sharing the touches like james is with sean. I agree with hsfbfan. there should be no comparison of sopas and arcadia. i mean im not saying so.pas is garbage but.... they beat an alhambra team that everyone from the RHL. got a piece of that played them. you see they're a good team but they will never be considered before monrovia or T.C. yes so.pas got monrovia a few years back but this team is almost like the team of '02. not as strong defensively but da offense is there.

hsfbfan said:

I can't believe bloggers are comparing arcadia to SPAS. Arcadia is much better that SPAS. Arcadia looked bad last week because of self-destructing mistakes. They actually had burbank in 3rd and long situations every time but completely blew coverage
for a score everytime. They only had one rushing touchdown. The burbank QB had one of the best nights any QB could have. Every pass was on the money, like throwing a ball into the ocean. I believe they could have beaten any school in the southland that night except OAks Christian .... they looked pissed off after Muir beat them in double OT.
Also, Arcadia lost all-purpose back, Kris Robison, who averages over 300+ yards per game (all purpose) 3 minutes into the game, which hurt. He beat everyone on a kickoff return and was going to score but he pulled up and went out of bounds with a ankle injury. The apaches did not recover after that.

But please don't mention SPAS and Arcadia in the same sentence. SPAS will win 2 games in the RHL this year. Mark my words... I seen them play this year & they are not that good a step above hoover and glendale.

Stang Fan said:

Observantcat, you seemed to have made an honest mistake, it's ok though I'll fix it for you: MUIR-38 monrovia-10. There, that's much better. NO, don't thank me, I know it was an honest mistake, it happens all the time. By the way the formerly top-ranked team in the state (St. Bonnies) apparently "layed" down for Oaks Christian too, huh?

BTW, as an obviously biased fan I believe that Muir could definitely beat St. Francis, however St. Francis deserves to be on top right now due to their tougher schedule and lack of a loss.

Oh, and Willie Youngblood is the best back in the area, PERIOD!!!

sry that was for observant cat

loyal tiger have u completely lost ur mind!!?? South Pas 38 Arcadia 6!!??? Monrovia 38 Muir 10!!!??? Muir would beat any team in the Mid Valley Division. Lets not forget their only loss is to OAKS CHRISTIAN!!! Many may say that South Pas can prove themselves against TC this friday, but what happens when they play Monrovia??? Are u guna make another bright pick??? South Pas 45 Monrovia 0???? 11/9/06 South Pas vs Monrovia, final score Cats 40 Tigers 12

Tennessee Tiger said:

I think the real keys to SoPas proving themselves this week will be the offensive play of Michael Flynn and Connor Berry. TC will control the clock. SP has to move the ball quickly and score on every possession to counter that. SoPas will win if Flynn gets going and Parrish's biggest stats are on the defensive side of the ball (tackles for loss, breaking up plays, etc.) This game should boost those passing stats for SP. I remember in 2003, SP had a great gameplan at TC, their biggest nemesis that night was the pouring rain. Sp's passing game behind Alex Christ never got established due to dropped balls and a slippery field. TC was able to control the clock and push the ball down SP's throat, not allowing them to strike quickly because of the weather. Watch the Sp passing game this week, and the home atmosphere as these will be key to a big win.

Tennessee Tiger said:

Well, Observant Cat, I would jump all over Fred for placing the 2-3 Apaches above SoPas, but we have a BIG game this Friday (and I don't want to eat ALL of my words come Saturday morning). TC with Broadnax is going to be a challenge. The only way we beat Alhambra is because of all the turnovers. The same will have to be true for SP to beat TC as Braodnax will have close to 200 yards rushing. If, however, SP does manage to get by TC with some Color Day magic(annual 1st home league game tradition at SP), they should jump Arcadia, as Arcadia looked pretty bad last week. Go Tigers!!! but this week will be tough...

Observantcat said:

I think Arcadia is starting to Look like the Notre Dame of High school football. So what they have a beautiful Field, They dont have the Talent to match. I am now turning to the South Pasadena Fans and saying YELL at FRED...He's doing it again. Monrovia Vs. Muir?...Monrovia 38 Muir 10
Ditto with Arcadia Vs. South Pasadena South Pas 38 Arcadia 6..Maybe. You're loosing again Fred. A couple of simple Adjustments and you will be right back in the mix. Rio Hondo league Power. Their are other interesting games to be considered as well. (La Salle over Rosmead?....I think so. Rosemead cant stop the pass and LaSalle cant stop passing, Ask TC.
