Oh, and I don't think Markham invented the double wing offense. I think my grandpa ran that formation in the Marines during WWII. Also, it has nothing to do with the Wing-T.

The Markham double wing has no T. It is a double-tight, double wing with a sniffer fullback. The linemen are typically foot-to-foot. The offense is predicated on washing down, kicking out, and out-numbering your opponent at the point of attach. Imagine USC's old student body right at left, except out of a different formation and run inside the end rather than outside.

Wing-T typically is based on deception with faking the belly play. There really is no diception with Markam, other than some misdirection. It is down hill and alley football at it's best.

I am, admittedly, a Don Markham fan for somethings. One of those things is realizing that a boring offense can win five CIF title.

In 1994 they set a national scoring record, averaging 64 points per game. They had no choice but to run up the score. They had no subs. Going into the playoffs that year he cut his varsity from 21 down to 19 guys.

Markham, like many successful coaches (including one who recently came public on this blog) clearly realize that there is no shame in a 3 yard gain. Also, eventually those 3 yard gains turn into 60 yard runs.

Wasn't the bloomington the creator of the double wing T offense? If so, what a horrible and boring offense. I remember in the 90's bloomington had no shame whatsoever...they would run up the score into the 70's.

My dreams were real nightmares--we played Edison and Fountain Valley in league play.

you know what that true, we get know love, ever! its cool like i said before. temple city has been inconsistent all year. monrovia started off real strong but started to play bad at the end of the year. personaly due to cocahing that just my opinion. let's not forget we stopped the best running back in the div (most people said all year long) temple city didnt, we play a different kind of football. i have so much fate in duarte coaching staff. that's if we lose it's because there just a better team. but we will win!

If you read all the garbage that gets thrown around here you would think either team could not beat the Westridge girls volleyball team. What an unbelievable game! Sitting in the press box filled with Eagles statisicians, spotters and the announcer, they were ready to declare Brentwood the winner with two minutes left in the third up 20-10, as was I. And then Colin Jones (as PasadenaNative mentioned) had the play of the day recovering a game-changing fumble and taking it back to the 4 yardline.

I'll be honest Maranatha fan, I didn't think you had two comebacks in you. And yet you owned the fourth quarter again, 14-0. Nice of coach Murphy to call me out in front of the all the fans after the game. But that's all in good fun and I guess that's what I get for being a doubter.

Congrats to the team and fans on a great victory. You guys are truly classy and deserving. However, I will refrain from calling Maranatha a Cinderella story because this win was no fluke.

These days I would have to agree Mary Star for football. As far as I'm concerned the Phantoms will always be my arch rival. I think a lot of La Sallians still feel that way since we play them in a variety of other sports still. Our soccer team, for instance just moved into a new league with includes Cathedral.

By the way, Goldenbear-what year did you graduate?

88's, we haven't played cathedral in football for years. i'd say marystar, and some of the RHL teams are our big rivals; marystar's always been a big game with tensions on all sides.

Maybe you missed it, but I believe I was the first person to say that Maranatha would be okay with Schilz at quarterback last Friday night. So that fact wasn't lost on me. Where I think Maranatha is going to have a problem is on defense.

Brentwood's back (Manny Benton) is explosive. If he gets beyond the linebacking core, I'm not sure there is anybody who can track him down. Clash was one of the few athletes on defense who had the speed to catch him. When the teams first met, Benton rushed for 130 yards. But Clash did an excellent job making sure that wasn't 230 yards with some game-saving tackles. The same can be said about the Whittier Christian game. Esteban Camarillo could have gone for 300 yards had Clash not made some great 1-on-1 tackles.

Now if Maranatha's front seven/eight can somehow contain Benton, then the Minutemen have an excellent chance. I spoke to Clash on Tuesday, he has total confidence in Schilz as do I. However, he was somewhat concerned about the defense as was I.

That's why I chose Brentwood. It's nothing personal, it's just my pick. Tom S and others realize I'm not rooting against Maranatha. I would love to cover a rematch against Whittier Christian. I'm actually pretty excited about this game and want to wish Maranatha the best of luck.

Now I know that La Salle just wipes the floor with the Marantha baseball team every year, and basketball is a little more even, but La Salle still has the better team. 1st off, Cal Preps is just a number crunching program. It made the Maranatha over Brentwood projection a few days ago before the Clash – Schilz situation was decided.
It has somewhere around a 75% correct prediction rate. So just like what Campa and Freddy are predicting it doesn’t matter. What matters is what happens on the field tomorrow night. I’m so looking forward to a great game.

One thing that I think the reporters are forgeting about and that Cal Preps appears to understand is that Matt Shilz is the QB that brought them back in the regular season game against Brentwood. Nothing against Alex Clash but Matt must match up real well against Brentwood. This time it will be on a neutral field as well!!

Also regarding the "Basketball only" rivalry that some might feel between the Lancers and Minutemen. Just give it a couple years and not only will their be a rivalry in Football but Baseball as well. I cannot speak for Track and Field but I'm quite sure that the Cross Country Minutemen (guys and girls) would have no problem with the Lancers right now.

Wow, it’s now the eve of the biggest game in the history of Maranatha sports. Sorry cross country and the other teams but football is the money sport in high school athletics.
The QB issue is now settled and Matt Schilz will do just fine and has the experience.

the reason that tc lost was defensively they could not contain the verbum dei run game. tc made mistakes (broadnax fumble on the second series the verb took back for td, falling a sleep on onside kick when behind 21-7, not score at the end of half with ball at the 1 yard line)that hurt them. the kids played hard but just could not overcome the hole they put themselves in.

what about when temple city played la canada and just barly won i think the score was 31-28 are something like that. that temple city team has been very inconsisten. duarte basicly stop la canada in there tracks. just cuz temple city lost dosent mean that duarte will lose. half of the people making these comment never seen duarte are verbum dei play. there just baseing it stricky off the fact that temple city got blown out. no matter what it will not be a blown out like that. verbum dei proably looking over us on to the championship game they better be focused.

Do you think that Temple City's 40 point differential was caused by fear, or simply getting overwhelmed by a healthy Verbum Dei team that is loaded with talent and firing on all cylinders?

Interesting that the reporters go against Calpreps in La Salle's favor, and then go against Cal Preps in Brentwood's favor. I suppose their lack of support for Maranatha should be consistent until the end.

The Friday/Saturday night split gives a huge advantage to the winner of the Friday night game. Think about it. 1) The Friday team gets one extra day of rest and preparation prior to playing the championship. 2) The Friday night winner gets to scout the Saturday game without being distracted with their own game. 3) The Saturday teams may scout the Friday game at the cost of distracting themselves from the game the next day. This becomes even more of an issue when their is significant distance between the schools.

I like that CIF schedules some championship games on Fridays and some on Saturdays, because that let's fans have more of an opportunity to see extra games, but not at the cost of putting one team at the disadvantage.

On Friday and Saturday night games, don't know what the rationale is except it gives all semifinal teams a chance to scout each other. I don't know how big of an advantage it is, but it's great for newspapers. I wish one of our two locals were playing on Saturday instead of Friday so we could give each school its own headlines.

I watched the Falcon for the last 2 years. I've seen the improvement. Coach Crutchfield has done a great job getting them ready for the games infront of them. With this in mind I have to disagree with you smart people. Verbum Dei will lose to the Falcons Saturday night. Why? Because we will not be intimidated like TC was. We will not let anything else but football be in our minds. We will play in that dirt fied without any fear. Bring it on.

probably so that coaches can scout all the games to get the most recent footage; exp. la salle's coaches can go to the verb game (so that if they win) they'll have the most recent footage on verb and duarte, that way they don't have to accept just the mandatory (and possibly bad) film they recieve from the opposing team. it works the same for the other side.

Why does the top bracket typically play Saturday while the bottom bracket plays Friday? That gives the winner of the Friday night game a distinct advantage over the Saturday night winner. Why not have all semi-final games played the same night?

Actually, my daughters have played against the Lady Minutmen in volleyball so I am familiar with the nice, respectful and passionate Maranatha fans.

love reading all the comments, speculations, what if's etc - and I agree - now is not the time to talk about our pre-season schedule - we are in the here and now - and we are happy to be where we are at - Brentwood will be looking for the big upset - considering how we dismantled them at their homecoming (even though we waited until the 4th quarter to do it). I would bet that Murphy and his staff have a game plan that will include getting it started a bit earlier - but whatever they do - you gotta believe that the Minutemen will prevail - Go Minutemen - and oh by the way - we just beat Temple City on the basketball court - oops - thats another blog!

You couldn't ask for a better set up going into the Brentwood contest than the Salesian dismantling. You guys have the personnel no question. While the loss of your starting QB appears troubling you gotta like the fact that your back up is well remembered by Brentwood. Kids don't forget that stuff and Maranatha best not fall behind like they did the first time, a well coached Brentwood team will do better the second time around to protect the lead. Murphy earns big respect with this win.

You cannot compare Bakersifeld Christian to a Monrovia, TC, Verbum Dei, or even an Eagle Rock team. Maranantha may be a great team, now that you have some top notch facilities but please, that is like comparing Amat to La Salle, it is just not the same. But Go Minutemen Friday.

I’m glad you both are picking Brentwood over the Minutemen. I know Campa enjoyed his humble pie and crow after our victory last week. I dont if its the head coach or the play calling or what but there needs to be a change next year cuz we should of done better but we didnt. Yes, burbanksports this is starting to look like the “Maranatha News and the Maranatha Blog� Minuteman Fan, isn’t great to see so many of the Maranatha faithful joining us here. Yes “The Jewel of the Valley� as my friend Finchamp coined a few weeks ago is grabbing the attention of many.
Now, onto the issue at hand. There have been a couple of posts about our preseason schedule. Now is not the time to discuss this. Now is the time to rally around the biggest game Maranatha has ever played. We’re two days away and counting. I’m so excited that I may be at Clark field at 4:30, first one in the stands. We have a huge battle against Brentwood. We won the game this year but look at last years match. We destroyed a talented Salesian team last week with the greatest Maranatha game I’ve ever had the privilege to watch. Murphy must keep the players focused on this weeks match up. As I said before, if we play with the intensity and error free ball we had against Salesian, Brentwood will crumble.
And I’ll sign off with what’s becoming my signature.

Did your last blog include the word amazing? You are most gracious. Maranatha is larger than every school in the Prep League (Poly, RH Prep,Flintridge,Chadwick, Webb, Viewpoint). I'm biased but I respectfully request that you reserve such description to RH Prep with a current enrollment of 44 boys, freshman through senior year.
Every male in the entire student body plays for THE TEAM. No one doesn't suit up. They all practice. Some of them probably shouldn't play and certainly wouldn't make the team at other schools. But they are all part of something, something that is bigger than them. Something that has a rich history, strong following and a bright future. Last night as my son and I left RHP, one of those kids that "shouldn't play" was out coaching some third graders in the Kare Youth League program. Those 3rd graders think the world of this RHP football player, their coach. An unlikely coach if you ever saw one. And at the end of the Varsity game as the Alma Mater draws to a close these kids eagerly hug the sideline as they await their chance to sprint onto the field to congratulate their coach (or console)and snatch an armband and a piece of "history." And 30 years from now that player/coach will be a grown man remembering his "days of glory at RHP." Now that's amazing!

Let me distinguish between those that are wishing you well and offering their support (I am one) and those whose jubilation is gushing out of every pore.

Let me address the jubilant crowd which include my "friends" Minuteman (the original) #2, #3,etc.,The Voice and Tom S (I look forward to meeting you). Style guys, style. Years ago when a Dallas Cowboy receiver scored and danced it up big in the end zone (Billy White Shoes Johnson?)coach Landry scorned him on the sidelines by saying, "son, act like you've been their before!" So I I am offering sage wisdom when I suggest that one temper thy enthusiasm just a skosh and behave as though you have been in this spot before. That you are focused on the present and the task ahead not even so much a thought about the Championship game.

Stay away from the "bring on LaSalle" stuff and wait a few years to even consider scheduling them, after the wind blows all that future talent your way. An HONEST assessment by any of you guys gets only a kicker spot on the All-Area team. That's no disrespect to the other two but the talent in the area in the other spots is deep. And Coach Murphy, he must be terrific. If I didn't know better I'd guess you guys were all brothers of his! Now, using Fred's criteria based primarily on league and playoff performance....I give the advantage to Galagher at LaSalle based on League play and playoffs specifically because coaching plays a key role in turning something around like they did. And if I believe all that I've read on this blog he did it with a QB that is deaf, dumb,blind, and uncoordinated--thankfully we all know better.

Burbanksports they finally drew you out. A couple of call-outs earlier and your graceful support followed. That was too easy.

Actually Burbank, I did know what Bell-Jeff stood for! (surprisingly enough) I played against Bellarmine-Jefferson in both football and basketball in the old Santa Fe League. Got to play against future NCAA Basketball scoring champ Ruben Dougles, he was the real deal!

i been to a few monrovia games this year. i just dont understand why they ever lost? monrovia should have been 14-0 this year. that not good to have 3 losses with a team so stacked. i think they need a new face as head coach. its seem like garrison cant ever get the big one. even tho i didnt go to the last game. james davis had only 12 touches, that not ever close to enough. hey, call me out if you wont but i just call'em like i see'em

It's quickly becoming the Maranatha News and the Maranatha Blog. Amazing that Maranatha has an enrollment of only 600. We have over 700 in each grade level at Burbank and we can't win a playoff game to save our lives.
Maranatha is an impressive story especially in comparison to our other football team in Burbank. Bellarmine Jefferson (bet y'all didn't know what Bell-Jeff was short for
)drives from school to practice in a park on the outfield grass of two baseball diamonds. They are in the same conference as Maranatha, but a world apart. Yet, Bell Jeff was able to lose in the first round of the playoffs just like BHS and JBHS.

While I appreciate the recent coverage by the Star News of Maranatha's very strong year and Playoff run. I beg to differ with you on their schedule. They play in the toughest conference at their level and Rio Hondo and Bakersfield Christian are two very good out of conference opponents.

Bring on La Salle Baby!!! La Salle may be enjoying some success this year but with Maranatha now having 2 years under their belt with the most Desireable campus and Sports facitity in the area, you will indeed see them climb higher and higher every year. La Salle, on the other hand was feeding off of atheletes from schools like Pasadena Christian, Arcadia Christian and San Gabriel Christian before Maranatha had their Campus. Not any more. If an athelete went to any one of those schools, why would they not want to go to Maranatha now.

"Come and watch the falcon swoop down" so EX-FALCON does this statement mean your even gonna pick your falcons for the upset, because whether or not I decide to jump on the band wagon is irrelevent. I personally would like to see the championship game be froma local team and on top of that a public school not a private school. So yeah Im rooting for the falcons to get the upset. Will it happen?????? no comment

Ex-Falcon, just to correct your previous statement, Duarte and Verbum Dei do not play on Friday. They play Saturday Night.

Just responding to the perception that Maranatha played a weaked schedule. Maranatha played Flintridge Prep this year. FP was projected to do alot better during preseason. We played Bakersfield Christian, an established program, which by the way Rio Hondo Prep also scheduled. The Cal School of the Deaf was undefeateded (regular season) last year and went to the D13 playoffs. I wouldn't mind seeing a La Salle - Maranatha match up in following years. I think our schedule was pretty balanced this year. And the Alpha League this year...3 OF THE TEAMS ARE STILL IN IT. WE"RE COMPETITIVE FOLKS! I'm telling you guys, we have pretty good speed for a D13 school! Let's just say that Maranatha caught many folks by surprise...including me.

Minutemen Fan, it all depends on time and location. We have three staff photographers, but one is used for a Whittier Daily News game, one for the Tribune and one for the Star-News. In certain cases where Whittier or Tribune teams are eliminated or playing on a different night, we get an extra photographer.
But I'll tell you what, have your photorapher send me an email with his phone number to fred.robledo@sgvn.com. I'll talk to him and our sports editor to see if this is can happen. No promises, but I'll do what I can.

I admire the passion and support of the Maranatha fans. For several months they have been asking for respect and attention, and their season and playoff run certainly deserve both. However, I would take Maranatha more seriously if they played a tougher schedule. I know the Maranatha faithful like to toss numbers around; their opponents had a combined W-L record of 38-62; seven of their wins were against teams with losing records. When they went against their three opponents with winning records, they were 1-2.

Don't get me wrong, I respect Maranatha. They have almost 600 students (they call themselves a "small school"?), their campus situation has stabalized, they have a beautiful campus in a freeway close location, and I think they now may have the ability to accept more students. They can build upon this season (which is not yet done!!!)and I could see all this coming together for Maranatha to become an athletic power in the future. However, I would respect them more if they did not schedule non-league teams like the California School for the Deaf and Twin Pines (I'll give them respect, they did schedule Rio Hondo Prep).

Something to think about for the future. Toughen your schedule, and that will undoubtedly lead to more press coverage. Good luck in the playoffs.

Fred - if a parent shoots a great photo and the outcome is "newsworthy" will you use it - we have a great photographer that happens to be a parent also - just wondering - also I know in the past there have been photos from more than 1 game in the paper on the same day - how was that accomplished? Don't mean to rag on you - just want to see the kids get there due.

Bishop Diego and La Salle are probably very similiar teams.
The Cardinals don't really have a superstar. They have a pretty good qb (I think he led the league in passing)and if I remember-they have 2 running backs that are equal in talent. When I saw them-their defense looked very tough. I think they have a couple of players who will play in college next year. The Cardinals should have beaten Santa Clara (too many mistakes) and probably lost to Nipomo because it was their first game. To me their most impressive win was against Santa Maria.
I think it will be a great game at La Salle and maybe it would lead to both schools playing each other during the regular season.

Unfortunately for Maranatha fans, we only have one staff photographer to send, and we feel it's best to shoot the local game, which is La Salle at home. We were trying to see if a sister paper was sending a photographer to the Maranatha game, but couldn't find one.
I know this doesn't seem fair, but it's not in any way meant to diminish what Maranatha has done. If Maranatha had a home game and La Salle was in Bishop Diego, we would be shooting the Maranatha game.
If both teams reach the championship next week, again, we'll shoot the team that's home, and if they're both home, it would only be fair to shoot the Maranatha game. But hopefully, if we get to that point, they will allow us an extra photographer.

Didn't they aleady get a color front page spot this past weekend?? Our players have worked hard to get this far...how about a headline with a picture. Thanks!

I agree with these guys too. Bring someone else in who only talks about star-news teams..why don't you do your 2-minute things like your show. Only our teams not tribune teams.

Minutemen fan, I have to agree with you. When you're right, you're right. In a perfect world, we would like to do our own shows, and hopefully we can get to that point. But we're so short-handed, it's tough for our staff to produce multiple webcasts. But we're working on it. I'm sure you would all like to know what Campa has to say too.
By the way, don't say we're not covering Maranatha in the paper, we're given them equal billing like I said we would.

Alex Clash and Matt Kohorst were both La Canada Gladiators. What a great feeder program the Gladiators have become.

While I enjoy the Prep Webcast (when I can see it - lots of trouble last night, but I hung on to hear if Maranatha would get mentioned - they did - at the very end) it needs to focus on the Star News area teams. There is plenty of news worthy athletics happening right here -and while I wish the best to any teams that having gotten this far - focus on the local. The show last night should have been all about Maranatha and La Salle - while I have a lot of respect for Coach Mooney - let's move on - TC and Monrovia are out - focus on who is left - 2 great small private schools who are making history in their little corner of the valley.

Baed on the 2 minute drill and the prep video - Fred and Campa both seem to have little faith in the Minutemen. Both Calpreps and Maxpreps are projecting a 24-23 win for Maranatha - while they both picked Bishop Diego over La Salle (Fred and Campa took La Salle). I guess at this point we wait and see - Good Luck to Daurte and La Salle - may the Minutemen prevail - and may Fred and Campa someday get on the Maranatha bandwagon.

I was wondering if our readers and geez, viewers, were interested in crossover web shows with the Tribune. My concern all along is if it would be a waste of time talking about Trib area teams in the Pas area, and I'm sure it's the same in Trib land. They probably don't care much about our schools. And yeah, the show needs to be shorter, it took forever for me to download.
Obviously, this is new territory for us, so I welcome your suggestions as we move into basketball and soccer season. I was thinking of inidvidual weekly shows interviewing and spotlighting area players and coaches. What do you think? Any other ideas, please chip in.

Here’s my take on the biggest game Maranatha has ever played. The QB issue is major. From what I hear Clash is out but soph Schilz has enough playing time and has proven he can get the job done. He’ll need to stay calm under the pressure and listen to his coach and senior players. After last weeks complete dismantling of Salesian HS this team will be fired up and have the attitude that no one can beat them. I still can’t believe what this team did last Friday. If we play with the intensity that we had against Salesian no Division XIII team can beat us. Brentwood, Whittier Christian or St. Margaret’s, doesn’t matter.
Finchamp, sorry to see you’ll miss our semi final game but hope you’ll make the championship game. We’ll be the host team, I’ll be on the field with the down box and you better stop by and say hi.
And to Prep FB Realist’s remark “They're done after this Friday�. Have you been to a Maranatha game? Do you know what you’re talking about? I’ll supply the mustard you can spread over those words before you eat them Friday night.

from what i heard the first time lasalle played VERB... It was the first time that VErb had all of its star players back on the field soo thats when they had just begun to mesh... lasalle caught them at a lucky time ,... and im sure the outcome will be diffrent if they catch them again
