Neat blog layout! Very easy on the eyes.. i like the colors you picked out

Kudos to you! This is a really good blog here and I love your style of writing. How did you get so good at blogging?

Really liked this post. I'll be linking back to this from my own homepage.

This is like my fifth time stopping over your homepage. I always fond of the content and the way you write. Very smooth and informative at the same time .

Why isn't Kevin Hess, Arcadia, DE/TE listed in the Area's Top Defensive Performers?

I think he is a game changer. Someone who the coaches need to game plan against or around. Ask any of the Pacific League's offensive linemen which defensive player they wouldn't want to go up against again. Fred have you seen him in person?

I honestly believe he and Darryl Carter are the game changers in this area on the D-Line.

With that being said...
#54 at Muir is a fine LB and Lance Mitchell is a man amongst boys. If Youngblood gets healthy Muir will get far in the playoffs because their D is HARD!

Right on TC Guy. We have top talent in the SGV, it is great to be "true to your school", but there is not enough said about respecting one another. Respect!!

I think it's time to name Lavelle Peterson Athlete of the Decade after the San Marino game. He just went about business setting records all over this league.

Good luck to everyone in the playoffs especially the Rio Hondo teams.

Lavell was AOTW in the Daily News for his 257 yards in the first quarter last Thursday and his 384 yards in 12 carries along with six touchdowns. He only played one play in the second half so he did this playing part time.

Jim M said:

Dwight has coaches at Temple City that are smart enough to understand football is played on a ten yard field. If you believe in your running back and believe he can get three yards a carry you can give him the ball 46 times a game and come up with a game plan that works.

Lets do the math. A running back that can get 3 yards a carry, give him the ball four times and he gets 12 yards and a first down. It keeps your offense on the field and the wepoons for the other team on defense and getting tired all the time. The big plays will come with this type of thinking.

Last time I check the ball isn't that heavy so it's a brilliant stradegy and it's quite simple.

If you don't believe in your running back you will get baited into working on your passing game or other things to prove you are a true offensive coach, but it's not a winning stradegy, but you may feel good about yourself because you tried every thing, but you played on a 100 yard field and not a 10 yard field. If you coach the kids right you should be able to get three yards every time you touch the ball.

Teams have 5-7 big plays a night and the rest of the time they are working on first downs so why not work your offense toward the goal of getting first downs? It really is simple.

We will see.

Dwight came up big in the biggest game of the year thanks to hard work and smart coaching and deserves the AOTW award.

This is hard for me not to pick Lavelle when he averaged 30 yards a carry and 6 touchdowns along with 384 yards rushing, but I know how papers go and if you've made it once you probably won't make it again.

Fred,

I think Burbank can steal one from PHS at home this season if their second match is at Burbank.
Referring to basketball here.

FredJ said:

BigA, the Muir-Arcadia game was on the top of page two. That story gets the most coverage after the two stories on page one.
TC-Monrovia was page one for obvious reasons, they were playing for a league championship. St. Francis also was on page one because they're our top-rated team, and playing for a Mission League title too.
The Muir-Arcadia game, I think most would agree, comes next.

BigA said:

Fred,

I am just curious...how come there wasn't any coverage on the Arcadia - Muir game. That was one of the best high school games I had ever seen. TRIPLE OVERTIME! Muir vs. Arcadia is always a great game but I was surprised there was no coverage. (I know TC vs Monrovia was going on) Just out of curiousity. Thanks Fred

burbanksports said:

PHS doesn't need to worry about the Burbank & Burroughs basketball teams.

KM said:

Tough for us to cover that one KM. The Muir-PHS game is that night, and the Rio Hondo Leaue is playing too. But sure is nice having the Burbank teams in the Pacific. How good are their boys basketball teams, will they be able to hang with PHS?

burbanksports said:

Fred, how about covering Burbank's victory this Thursday night after all we'll be helping Muir. Send Andrew and we can talk about PHS volleyball.

KM said:

Fred,

Will there be any coverage of this weeks Burbank vs Burroughs game?

Anonymous: Man I hate to do this but you’ve got to be out of your mind. I turn 54 this week and the way Marshall has been playing this season I could single handily beat them.
You’re saying a Campbell Hall player be the Star News player of the week. Last time I looked there’re not even in the San Gabriel Valley area besides you’re talking about a 3 and 6 and a 0 and 9 teams. Sorry to say but this isn’t even a consideration

Fred - I do appreciate all that you do with a small staff, however - the continual comments about Friday night being the big high school night is getting old - some schools (like Maranatha) for the time being play on Saturday and those games are just as important to the players, students and families as the games are to the schools with lights who play on Friday. I am so glad that La Salle got their lights, hopefully Maranatha is next and then we can maybe get the press that the bigger schools do. As far as RHP-Poly being the "big" small school game - and I agree that it is a big game - go RHP - Maranatha is playing on FRIDAY NIGHT - in a game of equal importance. Thanks too - for having folks out in the field - like Rick Mathauser - who faithfully cover the Saturday and away games.

I dont really get involved with the blogs but I have a son on the Monrovia freshman football team and I was at the big showdown between us and TC and that Broadnax kid shocked alotta people including me. I personally dont think the monrovia defense came to play. But I still give Broadnax his credit he is a talented young man and he deserves the player of the week.

But he was not the only one that supprised me that night. I think the QB Potts played one of his best games this season and its funny how I said that after the last couple games. He is clearly getting better and I also think he is the most UNDERRATED QB in this area. He doesnt get alot of respect that he should. On fridays lost to TC he kind of resemble Vince Young with the runs he had. He played his heart out! And the way Davis and Sparks are playin right now look for the QB to lead this team to the Championship game in this div.

OH AND CONGRADULATIONS TO COACH MOONEY AND HIS TEAM!

Fred,

No worries, you, along with all the other prep editors and correspondents, are doing a great job.

FredJ said:

For others who wonder why there is an Azusa Pacific story, or Citrus College football game in the Star-News -- we have a small staff, it's as simple as that. For those who don't know, we have one staff that puts out the Tribune, Star-News and Whittier Daily News in the same night. Our staff of editors do an incredible job getting out the paper under trying circumstances. And realize, we only have one full-time prep editor at each paper, along with a part-time correspondent. For the Area Colleges, we have one full-time writer covering all three zones. We don't always have the manpower to cover three different area college games each week. So, sometimes, you might see an APU or Pasadena City College story in all three newspapers. We wish we had the resources to cover every school the way it deserves, but understand, we do the best we can under the circumstances.

FredJ said:

Don't worry Griff, the PHS-Muir box score didn't make deadline because it went to triple overtime. Some things are beyond our control. On the F-Prep-Poly game, you have to understand that Friday nights are the big high school nights. On Saturday, we push the area colleges, plus have UCLA and USC football to deal with. We also don't have many full-time writers on Saturday, including myself, working unless it's an extremely important game that we can't miss. Plus, the real small school game is next Friday, when Poly goes to RH Prep. That will be our game of the week, so have patience.

Griff said:

I don't know about player of the week, but as for Pasadena Local High School Football Coverage of the Week, it's not the Star-News. Let's see...the line score for the Arcadia-Muir game, by all accounts from eyewitnesses a great triple-overtime game, doesn't show up until Sunday. And Flintridge Prep-Poly, one of Pasadena's longest rivalries, doesn't even get a string reporter, just two inches of copy probably from a coach's phone call. Yet Azusa-Pacific soccer and Citrus College football get big stories above the fold in Sunday's paper. Please put the Pasadena back in the Pasadena Star-News.

It is a very mutual relationship. I'm sure TC's o-line appreciates Dwight's running style. It makes their jobs easier and more enjoyable. I love seeing that chemistry, even from the dark side...haha!

grandpoobah said:

Dwight's the Prince of the City for this weekend's performance.
But he knows that O-line is the reason for TC's success the last two years.
Another well coached and played game by the Rams.

TcGuy said:

oka okay New York , you got me there, this one goes to Dwight.

rampride said:

i give it to temple city's whole offense everybody got in the action. Broadnax (of course he is the star),Riley saxon (was gold last night),the recievers andy hebs and matmoreno (i love moreno but it was mostly hebs last night) the o-line of brian soumakian, dan yang zhou, nick fry, cary smith and brian ly (best o-line in the mid-valley by far) to the full backs williams do and kyle o-malley

most people dont know this but riley saxon is the own that makes a lot of the play calls he tells mooney waht he thinks will work than he runs the play.

i love saxon but Dwight looked like desmond out there i dont care if he only ways 170 he will still dip on you and roll your but or jump over abd out sprint you give him the player of the week

New York said:

TCGuy,
I like to praise linemen as much as anybody, but I also know that true linemen do not need public praise. Mooney and the rest of TCHS clearly praise those guys enough. Sadly, linemen at a lot of other schools are an afterthought, and it shows. Mooney is a lineman dressed up as a runningback, and the result of the game proved it.

Also, not just anybody could run behind TC's offensive line. If Dwight had not played last night, TC would not have won that game. Dwight is the obvious choice. Dwight was the Emmit Smith of the night, so to speak.

TcGuy said:

Forget Dwight....give it the O-line, haha if thats even possible. They really are the unsung heroes...but I think just for this week, "Athletes Of the Week," those big guys need lovin' too.

BigMLover said:

How could you even consider anyone but Broadnax... a career night in a Championship game!

... and his postgame quotes were nothing but class... he gets my nod.

New York said:

Dwight Broadnax.
For a little guy, he puts his shoulders down and churns his feet. Mooney's plodding, methodical offense was turned into a firwork show by this kid. He was either grinding out yards, or breaking long runs. Dwight all the way this week.
