St. Francis, Monrovia, still fighting for a playoff spot

| | Comments (62) |

PLAYOFF SCENARIOS
Rio Hondo League
Temple City (8-1, 4-0) is the league champion and top entry.
If Monrovia (7-2, 3-1) defeats South Pasadena (7-2, 2-2), they're in as the No. 2 seed.
If South Pasadena (7-2, 2-2) defeats Monrovia and La Canada (5-4, 2-2) defeats San Marino (5-4, 1-3), there is a three-way tie for second place between Monrovia, South Pasadena and La Canada.
If that happens, a three-way coin flip will determine who finishes second. The odd-team in the coin flip automatically gets the second place entry. The two other teams would then play a 25-yard tiebreaker (just like in college) on Friday to determine the third place entry.
If Monrovia defeats South Pasadena and San Marino defeats La Canada, there would be a three-way tie for third between South Pasadena, La Canada and San Marino. In that scenario, all three teams would show up on Friday for a playoff. A coin flip determines which two teams play the first tiebreaker. The winner of the tiebreaker would then play the odd-team out from the coin flip in another tiebreaker to determine the league's third place entry.
MISSION LEAGUE
Chaminade (2-0) has clinched at least a share of the title and can win it outright against Crespi (0-2).
St. Francis (1-1) will be at St. Paul (1-1) on Friday for second place. The loser has to hope for an at-large berth in the Western Division since only two teams in the four-team Mission League are guaranteed playoff berths.
For other scenarios, click below

PACIFIC LEAGUE
Burroughs (6-0), Burbank (5-1) and Muir (5-1) are in the playoffs, all that is left to determine is the fourth place playoff entry.
Simply, if Arcadia (3-3) defeats Crescenta Valley or if Muir defeats Pasadena (3-3), they're in.
Pasadena needs to defeat Muir and hope that Crescenta Valley defeats Arcadia to earn the fourth playoff spot.
ALMONT LEAGUE
Schurr (4-0), Bell Gardens (3-1) and Alhambra (3-1) all have qualified for the playoffs.
Alhambra can clinch a share of the title with a win over Schurr on Friday.
ALPHA LEAGUE
Maranatha (4-0) has clinched a playoff spot, and will try to win the title outright at Whittier Christian on Friday.
PREP LEAGUE
Rio Hondo Prep (4-0) will host Pasadena Poly (4-0) on Friday for the Prep League championship.
MISSION VALLEY LEAGUE
South El Monte (4-0), Rosemead (3-1) and Arroyo (3-1) all have qualified for the playoffs. Rosemead is playing South El Monte for a share of the league title on Friday.
CAMINO REAL LEAGUE
La Salle (3-0) has clinched the league title.

Since the purpose of business is to satisfy existing desires, or stimulate new ones, if everyone were genuinely happy, there would be no need for business any longer.

Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man wanted to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion.

I've subscribed to your rss feed after reading this piece! Could you publish more on this subject in future posts?

I saw a program regarding that on television yesterday. Thanks for covering it in greater depth

I agree with your thoughts here and I really love your blog! I've bookmarked it so that I can come back & read more in the future.

Fascinating piece, thanks. Would you expand on the first part in a little more detail please?

Can I quote you in my report for school?

You got that right Hdub...one touchdown on a kickoff return and another on a pick to the house. SM's O didn't make it across the 50 more than twice that game.

hdub said:

that la salle loss to san marino was a fluke, we all know that. whats with the cif ranking...cantwell at 10?

Philly B. said:

there's nothin wrong with that because every so often I get it right. now all we have to do is fix the CIF rankings and then we'll be good, because they are off for sure for not ranking la salle

crazyqube said:

Philly Cheese Steak, I don't know what's going on but the last few days I find my self agreeing with you. I see it the same way.

Philly B. said:

yeah it would be great to see the tie breaker go down but hope fully monrovia will beat south pas and la canada handles san marino and then their will be no coin toss flip cali tie breaker or anything like that it will be just the best 3 teams of the RHL to go and get that division title

TcGuy said:

nice, two games at North Field in two days.

FredJ said:

Philly, yeah, they're open to the public. It's a school holiday too, so parking won't be a big deal

Philly b. said:

are those tie-breaker games open to the public or are is just those two or three teams

FredJ said:

I talked to Mooney, and if there are tiebreaking games in the Rio Hondo League, they will be at Temple City on Friday at 10 a.m.

burbanksports said:

qube's right Bishop Diego is in Santa Barbara and Santa Clara is in Oxnard.

Philly B. said:

hey Fred, you gave almost all the scenarios, except what if monrovia beats south pas and la canada beats san marino(which in case these our the two team favorites to win those games) what happens then? is there still a three way tie?

Philly B. said:

Damn dats gonna be a drive if we have to go up there. Santa Clara is pretty far as well no? thats why i was hoping for monrovia to win out the league so we wouldn't have to travel far but looks like we'll only have one home game in the playoffs givin that if we beat south pas and la canada takes care of san marino

crazyqube said:

Philly B, I believe Bishop Diego is in Santa Barbara.

crazyqube said:

Burbanksports, I agree with your comment regarding Eagle Rock.

Philly B. said:

where is Bishop Diego anyways?

Minuteman Fan said:

Finchamp - Marantha plays on Friday night at 7 @ Whittier College - same time as RHP - go Kares and go Minutemen

Eagle Rock has a very good team...only allowed 47 points in 9 games I think. I've seen one of their games, but I'm not sure if they could beat St. Francis, Muir, Monrovia or Temple City.

burbanksports said:

If there's a road trip to take in the playoffs, you want to go to Bishop Diego and play at Santa Barbara CC.

burbanksports said:

Philly B-
Fillmore is 7-1(3-0)
Bishop Diego is 6-3 (2-1)
Fillmore lost to LA Baptist (kind of like TC's loss to LaSalle).
Bishop Diego has victories over Mary Star of the Sea and Santa Maria.
It's just a hunch, but I think Bishop Diego will beat Fillmore.

loyal tiger said:

Titan,

is it at the traditional 7 oclock?

Titan said:

for RHL.....ok this just got cleared up at practice today. if we (SM) win on thursday and SP loses...we play friday at TC with SP and LC. if we lose and SP wins..Monrovia, SP, and LC will play friday at SM.

loyal tiger said:

Fred, have any idea of what time on friday?

Anonymous said:

Im just curious... I know Eagle Rock is not even in any of these leagues and is in the LA City Section, but I know they beat La Salle in the pre-season...could they beat Monrovia and all of the top schools of the San Gabriel Valley? just wondering....

Trojanator said:

Philly B. said:

burbanksports

TcGuy said:

California Tiebreaker...cool, it's named after us.

Don't worry Monrovia you should return to #2 after Bishop Diego upsets Fillmore this week.

burbanksports said:

Congrats to Maranatha.
Lookout Wildcats..the Fillmore Flashes are #2.
Wait...is that Burbank at #10...nah must be a typo.

FredJ said:

Fred,

The "California Tie-Breaker" is the archaic "place the ball at mid-field" and each team has 4 plays and whatever team' side it lands on (closest to their goal) wins. Was last used in local youth ball about five years ago.

In the 1970s, the NFHS's (High School rules)"0 yard tie-braker replaced that in 1977, if I remember correctly, and was used until the last six or seven years when the CIF-Southern Section adopted using this style of tie-breaker, but from the 25 yard-line using NFHS rules.

NCAA's tie-breaker is similar to what is used, but there is no requirement to use only a two point conversion after a TD after the third OT in the systen currently in use as there is in college.

The old "California Tie breaker" was one method to resolve ties, but did not require any team to score which was problematic.

The NFHS's 10 yard tie-breaker, which is the one in the current rule book, seems to be too close to the goalline and scoring is too easy.

The 25 yard tie-breaker seems right to settle tie ball games and the CIF-SS gives each league the option to settle tie games and determine playoff entry by using this system. If a leage has co-champs or even tri-champs, coin flips would normally decide the league placement for playoffs and the tie breaker would be used only to determine entry into the playoffs.

This is in the CIF-SS Blue Book which can be downloaded from their website.

Everyone had something to say, but you are a cool guy, so you won't change. Hey, keep warming up the bench. Because you won't be heard.
Just a helpful word for you.

Minuteman Fan--

You guys are not in Mid Valley--still I love the passion. Is your game against WC on Friday or Saturday? Hope the guys dust off the last performance and win big against WC. Based solely on the Brentwood/WC score there is no way Maranatha should lose.

la salle calm down

keep sleepin on duarte, why everybody still thinks there in control i think you just awaken a sleeping giant called the monrovia wildcats.

Village christian before Maranatha - I don't think so

burbanksports said:

If VCS beats LAB in the Bible Bowl then they might be a #3 or #4.

steve belichick said:

village christian is 7-2 and probably deserves to be represented in that list.

burbanksports said:

How's this for the Mid Valley?
#1 TC
#2 Monrovia
#3 Fillmore
#4 Santa Clara
#5 Bishop Diego
#6 La Salle

Anonymous said:

Anonymous, right, the winner of the St.Paul-St.Francis game finishes second. The loser has to hope for an at-large berth

KM said:

^ That was me.

Anonymous said:

Fred,
I believe St. Francis(1-1) needs to beat St. Paul(1-1) and they'll have guaranteed spot in the playoffs.

FredJ said:

The California tiebreaker is the same tiebreaker used in college football. Both teams line up at the 25-yardline and run their offense until a field goal or touchdown is scored. It's sudden death, if one team scores and the other doesn't, game over.
