Turkey Tussle at PCC? No, it's staying at Rose Bowl, at least for now
BREAKING NEWS
Before last night's Monrovia-Temple City game, Pasadena co-athletic director Bob Beran spoke to me about the possibility of next week's Turkey Tussle between Muir and Pasadena being moved to Pasadena City College on Thursday instead of playing in the Rose Bowl, where they have played every year since the 1950s.
Beran said they will discuss the possibility of moving the game at Monday's Pasadena City Council meeting, so I suggest that PHS and Muir folks storm down there and voice their opinions.
What a tragedy if they take this game away from the kids. They would be spoiling the best tradition this side of the Garfield-Roosevelt game. To those on the City Council, PLEASE DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN.

CITY COUNCIL UPDATE
a pre-Tussle scuffle over financing the expensive event was settled Monday night by the City Council, which voted to increase its support of the annual showdown between Muir and PHS to at least $39,000.
Translation: The City stepped up. Now it's up to the PUSD and both schools to continue to work with the City to make sure this game continues for years to come.
The game is on, Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Apple, trackpads, are your mice dying?
Rumors from my sources say Japan starts selling iPhone4 now and each pcs is 30,000 HKD (because telco in JP is 43 months of contract).
It wasn't just the expected first generation bugs, or the odd name.
The only thing that hurts the eBook reading feature is that Apple plans to charge $14 to &15 for eBooks which is more expensive compared to what Amazon.com charges (which is $9.99 or less for most digital books).
The difference between the two being that the iPad has a much larger view area.
There may be a possibility that iPad will boost multimedia application functions aside from its versatility to justify the high price so you get more value from your investment.
Now you can leave your friend's dog alone, grab your iPad and go out. This new toy attracts so much attention, so I guarantee that you would be surprise how popular you are! But you have to get iPad right now, who knows how quickly the novelty will wear off!
But I don't see Apple purposely making a product that directly competes with their iPhone and iPod cash cows.

Interesting homepage. Can I give you a suggestion? I think you've got something good in this post. But what if you added a couple links to a page that relates to what you're point of view?
thay can't move the tussle that would break tradition
that also so would not be fair to the players who look foward to playing their for those who has not played in a turkey tussle wouldn't understand
Moving the Turkey Tussle
from the Rose Bowl to
Jackie Robinson PCC field
is an excellent idea !!
We just cant wait to leave
the ugly ass ROSE BOWL
and the ugly nasty event staff security there and the way they treats us there
the ROSE BOWL wants us out anyway since thier cash cow the UCLA BRUNS play there and we are just in the way of pasadena raking in the high big money !!!
Pasaden wants the turkey tussle to go away and die!!
they jacked up our muir drum section this year and prevented our photographers and video people from entering with the marching drumm section
they keep ROPE-ing us into smaller tighter more narrow space inside that huge rose bowl like treats us we are INMMATES in jail or prison !!
the sky high food and drinks and only one stand ,
the security trears us all like prisoners
To hell with it move to PCC !!
I can not wait to get away from the ROSE BOWL !!!
they can go to HELL
we look foward to PCC which would be a breath of fresh air
Bigboy,
I don't know why you're hating - especially when I gave props to the 'Tussle and both John Muir and HS.
Oh well.
make me
Bigboy....please just stop talking....=]
Is that al you can come up with? Nice one i couldnt think of it myself. So let me get this straight you guys almost lost to CV? When SF beat them 39-6? Thats right SF sucks.
that goes to u too patrick
o by the way sf fan f^ck st. francis u guys suck @22
lol.. i meant to say there was less people than i expected, i mean if they were all moved to a smaller stadium then it might appear to have a whole buncha people.. but all that matters to is that i was there, i saw, i felt the the famous feeling that evry player that has been there felt and i banged me a dog. hehehe b uck a f ulldog =D
i played in the tussle last year.. i expected less people than i expected. so moving to pcc should be considered.
I'm an SF grad, have friends that graduated from Muir and HS.
Granted, attedance at the 'Tussle has dropped from its heyday.
However, tradition is just THAT. It would be an absolute injustice to move the game out of the Rose Bowl.
there is no way anyone is gonna touch on the rose parade so everyone just forget about that. i wont say that tyhis turkey tussle is just another game because its not but that parade has way too much pull for it to be moved anywhere. im really stalemate about the whole thing i want the tradition to continue but pcc has a nice field now....... i still cant choose a side i wanna be one quite yet
I also think that if the tussle is going to be held at PCC then the Rose Parade should come down Lincoln how about that
I think that tussle should be held at the rose bowl because if its held at PCC there will be alot of friction what I mean by friction is fighting and alot of it.
SF Fan - Apologies to you and especially your kids, in the heat of the moment you say (or type) things without sometimes thinking, typing (or saying) somethings that are wrong and irrelavant..All htat matters now is that the Tussle is on.....
Get'em Dawgs- First of all that was an extremly ignorant comment you made about St. Francis. Personally i find alot more tradition at that school than PHS. I support the Pasadena public schools, i have kids that go to SF but does that make them spoiled? NO!!!! PHS and Muir is always a fun game to watch and i enjoy it but to come out and make a comment about SF when you dont know what your talking about is unreal.
Also i watched a SF game in the 70's at the collesium and they had 60,000 people there. Do you think that maby they can have ways of advertising the game for maby the Rich Spoiled kids from private schools and others that dont about this game? The Rose bowl would make more money.
Memo to Pasadena:
LET THEM PLAY!
LET THEM PLAY1
LET THEM PLAY1
Does anyone know if the Turkey Tussle was ever not held at the Rose Bowl for any reasons? So far, nobody I've talked to can recall a time it wasn't played there since the series started in 1954.
During the Turkey Tussle heyday, I heard around 25,000 to 30, 000 attended the game.
the rose bowl holds about 92,000+ has that number ever been approached in the history of the turkey tussle?
dang, 92,000 for a h.s. football game would be freakin sweet!!
phashon, if for some reason the kids dont play at the rose bowl, best believe they'll never cancel the rose parade whether you were being sarcastic or not. thats like canceling the super bowl.
Stang Fan,
Can Pcc handle a game like turkey tussle???? i guess u havent been to pcc lately. they finished the new parking structure which is 5 levels plus thiers parking outside the structure im sure pcc can handle. but i still understand the tradition of keeping it at the rose bowl.
There will be a story on the front page of Tuesday's Star-News with outcome and reaction of tonight's board meeting. From what I gathered, the game will be at the Rose Bowl on Thursday.
However, future Turkey Tussle's might be in jeopardy, and of course, it's about who's going to pay the stadium costs. The city is tired of forking out the bill. The Rose Bowl doesn't charge the school's rent, but GM Darryl Dunn said it costs about $40,000 to pay for the lights, security, concessions, field repair, etc, which the city has to figure out how to pay.
Much love to the youngman playing at RHP, do well and make your peeps proud,as for knightmare MY APOLOGIES since you are from Arroyo H.S. and not SF. But you must understand how much this games means to the students, alumni and people of Pasadena. And much love to Stang Fan, just three words BEAT JOHN MUIR!!!!
There are so many reasons this shouldn't happen it's hard to list them all, but I'll try.
1. Tradition, tradition, tradition. I'm sorry, but the only thing the Roosevelt/Garfield rivalry has on the Muir/PHS rivalry is years and, ironically, crowd energy due to the concentration of so many people in such a small place. Whenever I run into people from throughout the country and we discuss high school football I tell them about the Tussle and playing in the Bowl, they are simply astonished and envious.
2. PCC? Can PCC realistically handle a game of that size? From parking, to security, to which team gets to sit on the home side, etc., etc., etc. You thought the consession line was long at the Oaks Christian game?
3. The kids. This is what they grow up dreaming of their entire youth careers. They've heard stories, they've been to the games, they know the history. Are you simply going to snatch that away?
4. UCLA? Look, this isn't the first time this has happened before, the field will be just fine. It's not like it is going to rain or anything, matter of fact it's going to be hot and dry as hell this week.
5. Why are we just hearing about this now? I know it may seem a bit much but MANY people fly from out of state just to come to this game. Many families who have sons, grandsons, and nephews playing in this game travel from afar just to see their relative play football in the Rose Bowl.
6. Where is this coming from anyway? Whose idea was this, is there more to the story than just the UCLA angle.
Bottom line you take away the Rose Bowl from the game and the actual game doesn't change. However, the history, the tradition, the fun, the stories, and that unique quality that seperates the Tussle from all of the other rivalry games is gone. And for what? To save some money? I personally don't think it will happen, but hey stranger things have happened.
And Knightmare I know you are not from SF, but rather Arroyo (don't be too hard on "Get'em Dawgs" after all he is a Dog), but bro you really sound like a hater. We should be grateful for having the chance to play in the Bowl, and trust me most of us are, but that doesn't mean we should just say "well thanks for the memories, time to go to PCC." I know it may be hard for some outsiders to understand how and why this is sooooooooooo important to this community, especially since this is "just high school football." But the reality is that this game means a lot to a lot of people and the Rose Bowl is our high school football heaven every 2nd week of November. As we would sometines say at Muir, "I can 'smell' the Tussle coming."
KEEP THE TUSSLE AT THE BOWL!!!
By the way, there is a documentary being made on this very game, and from what I understand the trailer that has been played at the schools is simply amazing.
Phashon & Get'em Dawgs--
You guys kidding? Of course it's about money! I'm sure it feels downright criminal that anyone would ever consider moving the Turkey Tussle from the Rose Bowl--like play the Super Bowl in Mexico (well sorta). I'm not a white suiter from the T of R or a Pasadena councilperson so I will speculate that the use of the Rose Bowl is well out of reach for anybody but big $$$$. It no longer feels like it's ours.
As for Holden....he's lobbying for a Pro team and to keep his position on the council or RBOC. I think he turned his back on many of his constituents years ago.
Dawg--
You one of my former neighbors? Not just that but a card carrying member of the Raider Nation? Nobody understands us but we know football. Yes it would be a travesty to have this game elsewhere but this is not MORE important than the rivalry itself. In fact, should the game be played at PCC, it might end up being one of those memories guys refer to in years to come...."I played in the Tussle at PCC that went two overtimes in '06." By the way Get'em Dawgs, my son is from Altadena and woulda been a dawg but he's playin' for RH Prep in Arcadia--send some love our way.
first off im a full believer in tradition and having been to a turkey tussle. it is a great rivalry even though muir has dominated for the most part. but its a real big turn out. But i do agree with phason about this game having alot of african american players in this game. Yeah the fans can be a bit rouwdy but theirs so much security their. things really dont get too much out of hand. On the other hand PCC is now a wonderful facility to have a game and im sure the turn out will be better than the a regular pcc football game lol. So i guess u can say im not sure if it should be moved to PCC or not. I understand if they dont have the money than they dont have the money to have the game at the rose bowl. If thats the case then its real sad. I just think its something thats real cool to have for the community of pasadena.
This make total sense. Political people taking away from the pure enjoyment of the kids, teachers, parents and community. Yeah, that seems to be a fitting quality of a lot of our elected representitives.
Look for Ashton in the audiance because I think we're being PUNK'D.
Jim M.
Knightmare - Let me set you straight, I work Monday thru Friday and live paycheck to paycheck. I grew up on Summit Ave in Pasadena, one of the WORST area's of the "Rose City" I've attended the Tussle almost every year since 1977, I don't have a "high horse" to get off of. What I do have is love for my Alma Mater, the radition and the LOYALTY to PHS.
Knightmare? St. Francis H.S. football fan? talk about SPOILED!! You support a PRIVATE school that most of us "high horse" Working people wish we could send our kids to. I suggest you watch who you call "spoiled" and refer to being on thier "High Horse" Look in the mirror or as we used to say" People in glass houses, shouldn't throw rocks"....And since you did'nt go to MUIR or PHS, SHUT UP and go watch ST. Frances of Assi or what ever! Oh I am a season ticket holder for the Raiders and I would LOVE to have a team in the L.A. area, as I get tired of DRIVING (not flying) to Oakland to support my NFL TEAM!
I agree that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, however not if their opinion is a racist or racially suggested opinion such as phashons. Aram's blog once said that this is not the place to categorize schools, players, coaches, alumni, parents, or mascots by their skin color, so in this sense Arams is on a different level than yours because he does not allow it... you should not allow this mishap to take away from the game...
just move the game to sunday at
1:00pm
I have to say that I am disapointed that they are trying to move this game to PCC. I've played at PCC and it's nice but am I going to tell my kids about that one day....NO
Going to South Pas I always envied PHS and Muir players because they got to play in the Rose Bowl every year. It's probably a huge motivation to play for both those teams in the first place. Let them play. Please tell me that the Rose Bowl doesn't have enough people to prep the field for UCLA's game on Saturday. If you move the game this year, it's going to be hard to get it back.
Knightmare, you have a great enthusiasm for football and your beloved Knights. I'm sure if you attended Muir or PHS, you would feel differently about having your greatest tradition taken away.
My solution for the future would be if there is a problem with UCLA playing the same weekend as the Turkey Tussle, then move the Turkey Tussle date up a week, or a week that UCLA isn't playing. If it means playing the Turkey Tussle in Week Eight or Nine to save the tradition, then do it. But don't move it to PCC. Playing in the Rose Bowl is for the players and the alumni. It doesn't matter which week they play it, as long as they play it.
Knightmare, Phashon is entitled to his opinion and what he believes. I don't think race has anything to to with it, or at least I hope it doesn't. But he's entitled to his opinion, just as you're entitled to yours.
TO: phashon,
you are flat out ignorant to think that being white or yellow or black or red has anything to do with it. The Rose Bowl does not care about the color of skin that buys the ticket... they just want to fill the seats.. plain and simple. They only see one color: GREEN! If the tussle does not fill the seats, then they cannot keep the tussle at the Rose Bowl! It shows what kind of a person you are because you were the first to play the race card..
And to Fred Robledo: I cant believe you even allowed this post to begin with!
T0: Get'em Dawgs,
You are right that I did not go to either of the tussle schools.. but it seems like less and less are going to that game anyways so whats your point? Its obvious that you are one of those spoiled and priveledged people from pasadena when you said, and I quote: "I DON"T NEED TO BE "THANKFUL". I bet your the kind that wanted to keep the NFL out of the Rose Bowl too, while everyone around you (the rest of the SAN GABRIEL VALLEY) is begging for a local pro team to follow. Who do you think you are that playing in the Rose Bowl is a right? It is not! It is a priveledge! So get off your high horse and just be thankful to play the game at all.. who cares where it is? as long as it is.
Fred-I agree with your point of view. I was just curious about the Garfield-Roosevelt history. I seem to recall them screwing with the tradition of that game and it had a negative effect for the schools and their fans.
Burbank, it shouldn't matter if the Garfield-Roosevelt game was moved around. This is about Muir-PHS and the Turkey Tussle in the Rose Bowl, where it always has been. This is what makes going to Muir and PHS special. I'm already sour on the city for not doing enough to improve the athletic facilities for its four public high schools. You watch, every high school in southern california will have a new synthetic field before they even consider it for Blair, Marshall, Muir or PHS. The school district and city need to look at ways to improve their high school athletic facilities, and embrace the great sports traditions and sports figures that hail from this area. Instead, they're looking to to get rid of a tradition that every high school player in the country would love to be part of.
phason - Do you really think this is a race issue? come on - Do any of us think it's about UCLA playing there 2 days later? come on -the kids from Muir and PHS deserve to continue the tradition, it is a great game and needs to stay at the Rose Bowl - and as Fred said - it better not be about money.
Wow, Aram chips in. Problem with Aram's comment is he hasn't been to a Turkey Tussle the last five years that I've covered the game, so what does he know about the attendance figures. There have been between 6,000 to 10,000 each of the five years. No, it hasn't been surpported like its heyday, but there are still thousands of alumni who show up to this game. Sorry you don't have a tradition like this on the Eastside Aram.
I'm all for tradition and back in my RHL days, I would envy Muir and PHS and even watch the Turkey Tussle if possible.
Fred- hasn't the Garfield-Roosevelt game been moved around a few times to different venues?
if the kids cant play in the rose bowl ! cancel the rose parade too ! but , they wont do that. if it was two all white schools playing this would not even come up ! but , because both teams have the majority of african americans on the teams it is a problem.
Wake up, it's just high school football people.
ur worst knightmare & burbanksports:
Did either of you attend PHS or Muir? Becuse if you did then you would know of the PRIDE and TRADITION of the Turkey Tussle! As long as my family and I pay taxes in Pasadena, and our kids attend school in Pasadena I DON"T NEED TO BE "THANKFUL" for what we're getting right now, and we don't need to add the Burbank or Glendale schools to OUR TRADITION! ( go start your own!)As for Bob Beran, I don't know where in the hell you came from, but I suggest you take your sorry A$%, and your idea and head for the border....Yeah I'm PISSED OFF! Both PHS and John Muir student bodies should pack the city council meeting, bring the JMHS Alumni Drum Corp, and wake those fools up. We look forward to seeing our kids play in the Turkey Tussle, the kids, many families divided support both schools. And for God sake if the issue is money, then shame on the PUSD,the city of Pasadena and the Rose Bowl, what happened to helping the community? is the city & Rose Bowl too busy trying to get a NFL team? what about your own schools? and students? AND LOCAL TAXPAYERS? I Suggest Mr. Chris Holden (PHS ALUMNI) get off his butt and do something about this..
That's the problem, NY. Who goes to the game still? I know they get a good crowd, but lets not kid ourselves, attendance for that game has dropped annually. If you're going to complain, then please actually be one of the people who goes every year. I kept telling Fred this day was coming. Having said that, it sounds like attendance isn't the main issue, it's UCLA playing in a less meaningful game two days later.
bro, you hit it on the nose New York, i totally agree with you.
It is BS. I'm sure the Rose Bowl was built with Pasadena and state taxpayer money. I'm sure if somebody looks close enough, they could find a clause that says the Rose Bowl is to be used by high school teams for some minimum time during the year. At the very least, the PAC-10 should step up and throw the city and local teams a bone to keep the tradition alive. That being said, the citizens should show up and fill the stadium to show support for it.
We can even make it a triple-header and add Hoover v Glendale. Call it the Bob Hope Airport/Pacific League Turkey Tussle.
If it's a money thing and since we're in the Pacific League, how about a doubleheader? Burbank v Burroughs and PHS v Muir?
We share an airport in common-why not the Rose Bowl?
Face it.. times are changing. This game should be played at PCC because the Rose Bowl is too big. Pasadena and Muir should appreciate what they had for so long and be thankful for what they are getting right now.. lets not be spoiled or selfish, the stadium at PCC is perfectly appropriate for this rivalry.
I just spoke to one of our city editors, and it is true, the game might be moved to Pasadena City College. Apparently, with UCLA playing on Saturday, the city is worried about the shape of the field, or the condition it might be in afterward.
If this happens, and let me preface by saying "IF" it does, the people who vote on it should be ashamed of themselves for spoiling one of Pasadena's greatest traditions.
There have been many times during the Turkey Tussle that they played on Thursday because of a Saturday UCLA game. Why now? And please, it better not be about money.
This game always lifts spirits and brings the community closer together.
There better be some good explanations this week.
I don't know all the reasons, I just found out last night. I have heard that it is getting expensive to host the game there, and that proceeds don't even cover the security. But I'm not certain. Don't worry, we'll stay on top of this. But probably won't know more until Monday, unless a blogger with inside info can tell us what's going on.
Being a graduate of PHS, I remember well the night games in the RB against the Mustangs. After missing a whole bunch of Turkey Tussles, I finally went back to see one on a Saturday afternoon, which I understand was due to the threat of violence between fans. The fans of the teams were separated in the East and West sides, with no interaction between them. Chris McAlister and Townes were playing for the Bulldogs, and a great player for Muir, sorry I can't remember his name, but all three went to play in the Pac 10, right?
I was glad to see the game moved back to night a few years ago.
I finally saw the PCC stadium this year with Muir and Oaks Christian, and it is a beautiful facility. Most schools would kill to play in a great facility like that. But there is a tradition in the RB.
Fred, you could elaborate the reasons for the proposed move if you want valuable feedback. Is it financial, or something else?
Like you said Fred!...since the 1950s, let the teams play at the Rose Bowl. That's just not right
What the hell... if the citizens of Pasadena try real hard, they can get the Rose Bowl game moved to PCC as well.
