The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Sorry for the huge review, but I'm really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it's the right choice for you.

I just have to say, I enjoy reading your article. Maybe you could let me know how I can subscribing with it ? Also just thought I would tell you I found your website through yahoo.

There is obviously a lot to know about this. I think you made some good points in Features also.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

Have you seen the 2010 nfl season schedule yet? It should be an fascinating season this year. Do you have your favorite to win the superbowl yet?

I hope we are not using this blog as a school recruiting tool!!!!

As trackcoach53 said, La Salle has a "well rounded program." That is why we chose it. It has a good mix of kids from public, private, and parochial schools. My only fear is that with its athletic successes, it will start to recruit athletes rather than students, and become a "jock" school. It is perfect the way it is now, with the right balance of arts, academics, service, religion, and sports. I tell people that La Salle enrolls students, and not athletes. I hope that will remain the case until my child graduates (so he can get more playing time!)

In any event, when choosing a school, look at your child, and do what is best for him or her, not because of the athletic program. I do not know about you, but my retirement planning does not include using my child's earnings as a professional athlete to support me in my golden years.

Youth coach,
Wow you are really knowledgable about the SGV - especially for a guy who evaluates football talent for a living. Try Peterson, Broadnax, Davis, Youngblood, Hirschman, Smith, Love,Do,Finchamp and on and on. Your son really racked them up last year - 140 yards total for the ENTIRE SEASON (Peterson and Broadnax have that in a half) - you are right he is the best back in the area - case closed. Now go back to writing fictional articles for the Burbank Leader.

I assume you are with La Salle. My daughter is a 5th grader at Pasadena Christian. While she is a talented gold level soccer player she has received national acclaim for her running and triathlon performances. She has recorded a 5:55 mile at age 10. How does the cross country program at La Salle stack up with Maranatha's?

trkcoach53 said:

Griff,

Regardging private high schools, I reccommend La Salle. A very well-rounded program of academics, service and if you sports, a great sports program.

Most of the sports are in contention each year for league titles and the teams have won at least 5 CIF Division titles in the last 10 years and have gone to finals many other times.

Applications for current 8th graders are due by January 5th so if you are interested you must apply by the deadline. Refer to this site for info: http://www.lasallehs.org/gpage.aspx?p=439

What is the sport of choice for the student?

Goldenknight: to disappoint you once again, I'm neither Wiggan's father, mother, brother, sister, coach, or friend. Second. it's interesting to hear that he would be the 7th best back in the SGV (if he lived there) considering the fact Wiggan went 6-1 and averaged @200+ yrds/game against the teams in the SGV (including ST F. and Muir) Can you please mention the other top six backs. I know Peterson is the number one back in the SGV, which I have never doubted, or denied! but six others! Who? Davis is a great back too! Got to have him up there.

Youth Coach,
Your comment detracting from Peterson's award came out of nowhere, and you cited a kid who is not eligible anyway. Yes, your comments about Wiggan came completely out of nowhere because he was not even mentioned on this thread. For a supposed professional, you disappointingly cited only the La Canada Valley Sun as the proof that Wiggans is better than Peterson. I hope you don't rely on journalist opinion when you submit your professional scouting reports.

It sounds like you have a pretty cool job. I just hope you dig a bit deeper and make the most of it.

I too would recommend you take a look at Maranatha - the academics are strong, student clubs and involvement activities are plentiful, athletic programs work to develop both the body and the mind, and the student's relationship with God is strengthened through all activities. The staff is first rate and the campus is unbelievable - Give John Rouse - Dean of Admissions - a call, you will be glad you did

youth coach,
I read more than the Glendale/Burbank News Press, unlike you and saw your son play when he played against our extremely marginal team - get your facts straight before you try and mislead this blog. You are genius - Wiggins would would be the 7th best back in the SGV, if that, and you said he is "the best back in the area" and you said you get paid to evaluate talent. Exactly how high are you? Also, Wiggans would have at best honorable mention on defense too - he is nowhere near the defensive player Peterson is either. I do agree he is the best player of the 4 teams the Glendale/Burbank NewPress and Burbank Leader (aka - ALL AREA team) actually cover (Glendale, Hoover, Burroughs and Burbank - very tough competition - a collective 6-25 with two 0-10 team) To compare Wiggan to Peterson is such joke it proves you must be related to Wiggans or just not very bright. With your keen eye and insight of being professionally paid to evaluated football talent the Burbank Vikings have come a long way since your involvement - too bad both Peterson and Wiggins have lost their eligibility for Pop Warner football. Go back to blogging on the Glendale/Burbak New Press - no one cares about Burbank here.

youth coach said:

NY: first and foremost I must let NY in on a little secret, my profession is to scout FOOTBALL. THAT IS WHAT I GET PAID FOR! 2nd. Peterson is a great back! but to say that I chimed in from nowhere is untrue. I've been writing since the beginning of the year. I brought WIGGAN into the discussion because HOW many teams from the SGV di d WIGGAN run over (SIX)!!! Yes he had a pretty good line, but you act if the were not oversized or outmatched in a majority of their games.
REAL HSFBFAN: I must start by saying I totally respect where you are coming from. You know what you are talking about, but during my research for my work I have to disagree about your comments. Wiggan also played defense. Wiggan and Peterson are BOTH men amongest boys(body wise and mature young men). And BOTH have a great work ethic in the weight room. But I also have to disagree about the next level. I think that BOTH athletes have bright futures. The Highlights are awesome!( I have seen them)
GOLDENKNIGHT: obviously you dont READ enough or you don't read a wide enough coverage of high school football.

Griff--

One of the most important parts of high school is the individual's ability to extract a positive experience. Anything that produces positive results is a winner. Some kids are well suited to attend a large school and thrive. Others need the attention that may be found at a smaller school. Yet another factor, as far as athletics goes, is whether the child can play at that level. Moreover many kids in 8th grade like the idea of playing more than one sport.

Pasadena Poly provides a rigorous and intense educational experience. Their sports teams are good too. It is expensive, as is Westridge, Flintridge and Mayfield. Don't dismiss any of these schools without a visit. Find about about tuition, aid available and college placement. Maranatha, LaSalle and St. Francis are also quite good--you have to decide if a private, parochial type school is a fit. Ultimately the parental involvement and satisfaction will determine a good outcome.

As for the sports program. Pick an appropriate fit that will allow your child to flourish and most importantly have fun and a positive experience. I'm big on continuity which may be the best measure of a successful program.

Tom S said:

Griff:
If you’re interested in a private Christian College Prep High School then I would recommend you give Maranatha serious consideration.
They have a strong academic program that encourages the students to excel in their studies. They also provide extensive AP and Honors level courses. Students also have many opportunities to build their relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. Community service is also required.
In regards to athletics their sports program is growing into one of the strongest in the Pasadena area. Many past teams have had success with league titles and strong CIF performances and look at this fall’s Cross Country, Volleyball and of course the Football teams accomplishments.
Many great things are happening at our “Jewel of the Valley campus.

Griff said:

First of all, what a great job you do Fred in reporting area high schools with a limited staff and budget. It's clear you do your best to cover everybody in a fair way.
Second, I'm interested in readers' views as to the school(s) in the Pasadena area that provide the best all-around combination of academics and athletics. If you had an 8th grader looking at high school, where would you want him or her to go?

Another thing about the Peterson article is the historical context that Mooney and Tip Sanders placed Peterson in. Peterson is one of the greats.

New York said:

Great call on Coach Mooney. He sets the bar high on character.

I just read the article on Peterson. I have to note one last time what a class act Coach Mooney is and how it would be great if all the high schools had a coach of that quality and integrity.

Fred,
Great call with Hirchman on the All Area team - would have been great to find a way to get Sherman on first or second team. Realize a little tougher to do at QB. Very hard to agrue with the MVP choice or the first team choices. Excellent job.

goldenknight said:

Youth Coach,
Give me a break - the all area team that Wiggan's was all area MVP was basically the Glendale/Burbank News Press, which doesn't even cover La Canada. The Glendale News Press owns the La Canada Valley Sun and share the same sports staff that amazinglying doesn't even independently cover La Canada High School sports. The Valley Sun basically reprints Glendale/ Burbank New Press reports, which again don't cover or write about La Canada High School (why else would a alleged "La Canada paper" have a feature article about a BURBANK (3 cities over) Running Back and have never had an article about the best running back in the history of La Canada). The La Canada Outlook did a 2 full page article on Peterson (gee I wonder why they didn't do one on Wiggans - Oh yeah because it is a LA CANADA PAPER unlike the La Canada Valley Sun (aka Glendale/Burbank News Press with La Canada classifiedes). So don't put forth that a La Canada paper voted for Wiggins (it is a Glendale/Burbank paper). Wiggans, is a hard nose runner, an over achiever with above average raw talent who ran behind a great line with a great supporting cast and would be honorable mention in the SGV All Area team behind Peterson, Broadnax, Davis and Youngblood.

the real hsfbfan said:

Youth Coach,

First and foremost, if you think Wiggan is better than Petersen, you must be a couple of cards short of a full deck.

Ok, I seen Wiggan play. He is basically a hard nose running back that does not know when to quit. He gives you that 2nd, 3rd, and 4th effort that any coach would love. Kind of like the great Mike Vanis that played for Loyola in the mid-90's but went on to walk on at UCLA but did not amount to anything. Wiggan had a great offensive line. Plus, he only went one way this year and that helps alot too. If you look at the trend of some of the SGV greats, they went both ways no matter what. In terms of his talnet level, I don't think he could play at the next level, Div. I that is. There's no doubt youth coach that he is good.
When you talk about Lavelle Petersen, you are talking about someone who is a step above Wiggan, in terms of speed, size, and strength. His offensive line was horrible, too. And, he went both ways. Let's put this way, Lavelle is built like a 25 year old as Wiggan looks like a normal 17-18 year old highschool player. Some coach in the SGV said that he reminds him of Maurice Drews-Jones. He's the best back to come out of the SGV since Desmond Reed. With his type of size, there's no red shirting in his future, he'll make a impact in the NCAA right away. Someone posted Lavelle Petersen's highlights on youtube.com. Just in type La Canada football. You'll be surprised!

New York said:

Youth Coach,

You act as if I said Wiggan is not a great ball player. I think they are both good, but Peterson is better. You are the whiner who chimbed in out of nowhere and attacked Peterson. Why even bring Wiggan into the discussion. He's not in this coverage.

Admittedly, I have not seen as many games I prefer, but I did see a few this year.

Wiggan's offensive line helped him a lot, especially against Muir. Peterson's line left a lot to be desired.

By the way, youth coach, just because you watch the games does not mean that you understand them. The fact that you point to local papers' awards as proof that Wiggan is better than Peterson is laughable.

10-4 on the Yank-Stuff!!! Yeah, Steinbrenner needs to let go of the Yanks and take over Al Davis Raiders.

Go Dodgers!

I coached JV in 2005 and coached the freshmen this season.

Go CATS.

DUDE,
I thought you guys on the west side were gonna start considering ARROYO as part of your coverage area... what happened? No love for the KNGIHTS at all in your all-area team? Not even an honorable mention? C'mon, you gave rosemead 4 honorable mentions and we beat those punks..You make me mad, and I hope all the ARROYO fans will call you on your lack of attention for our boys. Do you know PARTIDA, the areas leader in passing, or SOTELO, one of the best TE's in the valley, or SANCHEZ, who had a great Senior year as WR? They deserve some credit and respect. HEY FRED, WAKE UP! GO KNIGHTS GO!

Fred-
Are you going to comment in the near future about the issues from this years "turkey tussle"? I am not a huge Mills fan, but I would like to see more of the details before voicing an opinion on the subject.

SF Alum said:

New York-
I don't know if asking Mulligan about Peterson is the right call. Mulligan is Peterson's guardian and his biggest fan. Wiggans is a stud but I agree with you, Peterson deserved the Pasadena Area award this year. Wiggans got his headlines and recognition from his local paper.

New York said:

Youth Coach,

Peterson would run circles around Wiggan. Defensively, Peterson would fly up and lay him out.On kick return, Peterson would outrun him to the endzone. Just b/c the writers of those podunk papers did not choose Peterson does not mean that Peterson is second best. Wiggan had a great year, but Peterson is on a different level.

You should ask the other youth coach, Mulligan, for his insight.

FredJ said:

TomS, that's to be expected. Maranatha fans should feel like their coach was most deserving, just like La Salle fans support their coach.

Tom S said:

Fred:
Whether or not you selected Coach Murphy as Star News Area Coach of the Year, for what he's accomplished this year at Maranatha he is COACH OF THE YEAR in the eyes of all the Maranatha faithful.

FredJ said:

The toughest choice of all was coach of the year. A few years ago we were instructed not to have co-players or co-coaches of the year. Certainly, if we could have had co-coaches, Murphy would have been the other choice.

FredJ said:

On Peterson story, I left messages for coach Wheeler, but he never called back, so I made other phone calls.

New York said:

'Dawg,

I've been to a few Yankees game, but I am and always will be a Dodgers fan as well. Yankees are proof that it takes more than a high payroll to have a great team.

When did you coach JV line at M-Town?

Matt said:

Interesting story about Peterson. Nice quotes from the coaches at Blair and Temple City. Odd that there were no quotes from his own coach.

Congrats Bobby Garret for the M-town honorable mention list.

Your old JV line-coach.

Bulldawg, Go Bears.

Crazy,
I recently got caught up in Rugby. Definitely fun, but very different from Football. I found it more similar to soccer, especially when I was quickly winded. Of course, it's not as if I had been playing football recently.

Anyway, I found that the more English, Aussie and Kiwi a team has, the better they usually do. That said, I have seen pretty good player come from many places.

FRED...
WHO was the PACIFIC LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE YEAR? and the unanimous choice for PLAYER OF THE YEAR by the Burbank leader, Gleandale news press, and La Canada valley sun? (Which Lavelle peterson was also included)

youth coach said:

Too bad that Lavelle couldn't top WIGGAN from Burroughs in the other ALL-AREA...I guess we ALL KNOW NOW who is THE BEST RUNNING BACK in the AREA.

BigA said:

Forest Reed should have been the punter. He was consistently booting kicks 40+ yards down the field.

New York, not only the Britts play Rugby! In the 19th century Brittish sailors brought both football (with the foot) and rugby to all parts of the World. I have seen some pretty good teams out of South America and the South Pacific. Like my good Eenglish friend says: Football(soccer) is a game of gentlemen watched by hooligans and Rugby is a game of hooligans watched by gentlemen.

Fred, your candor and honesty is appreciated regarding Andy Saldana. I am not sure if Andy reads the blog, but we will beat on our drums and carry the word to him. By the way Ealar was he CORRECT choice, irregardless of what any one says
Thanks from all the Lancer Faithfull.

thanks for picking David Vander Laan for the d line.. but he's a jr not a sr and he'll be back next year. GO MHS.... Thanks again

New York said:

Freddy,
You're a real stand-up guy to recognize Saldana ex-post.

While we are making kids whole retroactively, maybe I can send you a long list of others from over the years...

New York said:

rugby football,

I'm with Finchamp. Unless your team is filled with guys from the British Commonwealth, I doubt it is one of the best in the country.

Furthermore, football players should not become Ruggers until their football days are finished. After football, though, Rugby is a great way to have fun, stay in shape and meet some great people.

An open casting call for anyone interested in playing rugby? To play for one of the best teams in the country? Come on...glad that's not the way they do it at Oxy Olde Boys.

FredJ said:

In fact Mr. Saldana if you're reading this, we send out all-area certificates to all of the players on the all-area teams. I will make sure that we also send one to you, because you were deserving. It might be too late for the paper, but I certainly want you to be recognized,
Fred

FredJ said:

To La Salle fans, I have to admit, I probably screwed up not having Saldana at least on the honorable mention list. After reading your comments, and going back over it, he was certainly deserving.

pete s. said:

not too bad of a job fred. my only concerns are that andy saldana should have gotten more recognition for his work. i know you had a lot on your hands and had numerous players to choose from, but, he should have made it. you messed up on that one---BIG TIME! secondly, i'm not too sure how coach gallagar got the nod over coach murphy. both took their teams farther than ever before, both stuggled at times thru the year, and both did an incredible job at responding to the adversity. i know there are several coaches that could have gotten it, but did coach murphy simply not get it because of the school and his age? is so, that's a little messed up.

Congratulations to all the honored players - I am a bit disappointed in the coach of the year selection - at the very least co-coaches of the year would have been appropriate - Joel Murphy was very deserving and should have been mentioned.

anyone interested in playing rugby in the area should check out this team www.cougarrugby.org
gives you something to do if you are done with football or will keep you in shape for next season
they are also one of the best teams in the country

I agree with crazycube...Andy Saldana battled back this year after a long process of healing from his serious injury last year...He should have been heavily considered for First Team, but not even a mention of his name is unbelievable

SF Alum said:

Fred-
Understood. It has to be a difficult task for you to choose from all the great players in the area. I am not try to take anything away from the players choosen. I am sure they all had outstanding years. But as you mentioned, the competition SF played this year is second to none in the area. I understand your point about the Newspress but with the "All Mission" league nod Arriola received I thought he would have rated higher. Either way I thought SF was well represented. Does your "all area selection" help these players get invited to allstar games next year?

FredJ said:

Crazy, you're absolutely right that you can make a good argument that he should be on the team. There were many more I wanted to put on, but we can't list everyone.

crazyqube said:

Fred, over all I felt your picks to be on the money. My only question is how could Andy Saldana from La Salle be left off the All Area Defensive squad, not even Honorable Mention? AJ was the Anchor, Andy was the Heart. There were fewer guys that could hit as hard, or fill up holes. me don't get it???

FredJ said:

SF Alum, Arriola's a great player, and had a great year, but so did the others on the Star-News first team list. He was a deserving Glendale News Press first teamer, but remember, the News Press only chooses from a handful of schools (and that includes Glendale, Hoover and Flintridge Prep, so the entire St. Francis squad should have been on the first team). The Star-News has more than 20 schools to choose from, so our task is a little more difficult.

SF Alum said:

Fred-
Let the debate begin. I am sure that the LB's choosen on the first team all had outstanding years for their respective teams and our great players. However based on your previous comments how did Ray Arriola not make first team? He was recognized as all first team in the Mission League, First team on the Glendale Newspress and even Honorable mention on the Daily News all star team. SF played a brutal schedule this year and SF fans will tell you it was his name you heard all night making tackles and big plays. Can you give us some insight?

FredJ said:

TomS.
Nice to hear from ya, and to answer your question, the rankings aren't simply based on records because some teams play much tougher schedules by comparison.
One of the biggest things I factor is in quality wins, which schools like Muir, St. Francis and La Salle had this season.
You can't compare Maranatha's record to some of the others teams in much tougher leagues and divisions. Maranatha had a great season for the league and division they compete in. But understand, if Muir, St. Francis, La Salle, Monrovia, Temple City and even Arcadia played Maranatha's schedule, they would all be undefeated and win the Northeast championship.
This isn't to take anything away from Maranatha, but you have to put their record and accomplishments in perspective.

TomS said:

Fred: Great to see the 2006 Pasadena Star News All-Area Team selections. Show what talent we have in the West San Gabriel Valley.
I’m confused on how you arrived at the Top 10 schools and maybe you can enlighten me.
It’s obvious that a schools achievements, record and where they advanced in the playoffs have nothing to do with being listed in the top 10. Of course I’m referring to Maranatha’s 10th place listing. The area’s school with the best overall record 11 and 3 and advancing to the CIF finals is put behind two schools with 5 and 6 records. Doesn’t make sense to me. Also leaving an 8 and 2 Rio Hondo Prep off the top ten isn’t logical to me.
And you thought you’d get off easy on this one.
