Congratulations to Monrovia girls on their thrilling victory over rival La Canada tonight in the championship game of the Arroyo Christmas Tournament. Monrovia saw their 8 point lead evaporate late in the 4th quarter but were able to withstand the La Canada come back and pull out the victory in the final seconds. Congratulation to Krystyn Jacobs from Monrovia for her MVP honor and to Coach Wagner for the great win.

Congratulations to Monrovia and La Canada in the Arroyo Girls Tourney. They will meet at 7:30 on Monday night for the championship. A prelude to the Rio Hondo league battles. First odds have Monrovia winning but they have to be able to stop Lelo and Ballard. Should be a good game. It always is when these two teams get together and play.

A. Campa,
Agree. Malik looks very solid. LA Times doesn't even knows the SGV exist in any aspect of life - let alone HS sports and they wonder why cic is down 7% - they should probably add a third calender section - that will drive subscribers.

High School fan,

I totally agree with you on the talent level in this area being down. Pasadena is a beast and won't be tested locally. In fact I was talking to coach Tucker last week about how the L.A. Times did not have PHS ranked in their preseason top 25. It just shows how clueless the Times is about this area.

Outside of Pasadena and maybe Renaissance Academy (haven't seen them yet), the talent level isn't the same as last year. I see several area teams with one standout and average help surrounding them- Bryan Gonzalez at Alhambra, Adam Malik at La Canada etc.

I think we were a bit spoiled over the last couple of years. I would say seven of the area's top 10 teams (according to Fred's rankings) had much deeper, more talented teams two years ago then they do this season. In the last two years, I would say only South Pasadena, Maranatha and Renaissance Academy have improved talent-wise.

A. Campa,
I have been to a few games this year - including the LC/LS game. Is it me or is the talent way down this year in basketball in the area. Yes - LC blew LS away - Hoffman always has his team ready - but LC didn't look like they had the talent level as they have in the past. In fact LC (the number 2 ranked team) didn't look good in the game against LS. LS (the number 5 ranked team) looked bad - even with what a appeared to be a size advantage. (Maybe they will come back like their football team did). Does anyone feel the same way I do about the talent level in the area?

Hey PhillyB, Monrovia plays Glendora at 6pm on Saturday at the Arroyo Tournament. Should be a great game, with the speed of Glendora and the overall talent of Monrovia. I've seen a few of the Monrovia games and they look better than last years team. The Muir loses were probably actually good for them, plus not very many good teams will be able to claim wins over Muir this year. Let's hope the coach can keep all the horses moving in the right direction.

bballlover,
Do you know what time the game starts between monrovia and the winner of the arroyo/glendora GAME? I think that the talent monrovia has, regardless of the losses to muir, monrovia is one of the top three girls basketball teams in the area.

Monrovia girls played Sonora High of La Habra tonight in the 2nd round of the Arroyo Tournament. I'm becoming a Monrovia believer. They beat a very good Sonora team by around 18 points. Good balance between the big girls and the guards. They got off to a slow start but then turned it on in the 2nd half. They play the winner of Glendora/Arroyo on Saturday.

Everyone should know how good L S basketball will be once the vacation is completed. They are competing in Hawaii (4 games) and the L S - Temple City Tournament. If they survive that with say a 5 - 3 or 6 - 2 record I think they'll be o.k.

HSBB Fan,

I was at the La Salle-La Canada game yesterday. I was somewhat stunned to see the lineup that coach Hofman put on the court...his kids were pretty small. Yet, they played good defense and hit their shots. They also smoothered Scott Jones anytime he got the ball.

La Salle will improve. Like trkcoach said, they're still getting back a good portion of the team from football (I thought it was a bit amusing to see Kohorst come in at center in the fourth). I thought Mark Friedlander had a decent third quarter. La Salle has the size to compete but they are going to need some time gel. It should be interesting in a new league.

LC played hard, tough defense, with a lot of movement. Lancers could not throw a pea in the ocean, missing long shots , short ones , and layups. Lancers are off to Maui for a high school tourney. Good luck!

L S played it's worst game of the year according to the coach. Also I think team chemistry was altered because the football players were thrown in there with one day of practice. L C was firing on all cylinders.

...and revenge was a factor for L C, L S won last year's regular season match by 1 pt and also 2 times during the summer. So L C was definitely motivated.

Wow! I didnt expect La Canada to stick it to La Salle like they did. Was anyone at the game? Is La Canada that good? or is La Salle over rated?

Hey Fred- Is the Roger Murray at the Tribune the same Roger Murray who used to be at the Star News and coached the Arcadia (Monrovia) Reds Senior Babe Ruth team?

Monrovia girls rolls over California High today at the Arroyo tournament. They will play at 7:30 on Wednesday night against the winner of the Sonora vs. Arcadia game. Still can't figure out if Monrovia is for real, big wins against everyone except Muir. Let's see how they stack up during the rest of the Arroyo tournament.
