Medina's Monrovia teams are known for battling in close games, showing a lot of poise. I think that pays off down the road.
Soccer: Last year in the playoffs they had a couple overtime wins.
Softball: They have played games up to 20 innings in the playoffs. They have lost the past three years to the eventual champions, giving the eventual champions the toughest games of their tournament.
Medina was my flag football coach at Clifton, along with Coach Greer, of course. Those were some good times.
I was fortunate enough to catch the second half of today's Monrovia vs. Flintridge Sacred Heart Game that ended in a 0-0 draw.
Sacred Heart's Pip Harrigan's penalty kick with seconds left in the game sailed high over the net and Monrovia failed to cash in a break away with about five minutes left.
Monrovia should have its way with the RHL but time will tell!
Crazy,
It is probably a good idea for Alex to play soccer (or basketball or whatever). Have fun. Take his mind off the fact that HS football is over. And wherever he ends up playing next year, he will be in better shape having played sports throughout the year. Tell him to get ready to play against the East in the Hall of Fame Game.
crazyqube: maybe you should just stop embarrasing yourself. If your "boy" is any good he won't need you to pimp him here.
anonymous, I saw him building a ring in his backyard, I feel sorry for the neighbors!!!!
john M, by the way what does the M stand for? Merde? It's on all the bigs>>>
Crazycube, it's Shot Put and Discus time!!!!
crazyqube: wow, that is big news! Where did you hear about this? On ESPN maybe?
I heard rumors that the La Salle Boys soccer team may be joined by Alex Jimenez. He has played soccer for over 10 years and has great skills for a big guy, can kick righty or lefty, playing at forward, could bring back memories to the days of the Tank Mueller from Deutschland.
New York....Monrovia High School sports has come a long way recently and it’s great to hear that coaches like Medina still exist in high school!
In my opinion another factor has been the upward bound movement of the City of Monrovia and the school itself. The overall community and school environment has led to more families choosing to stay in the public schools and that includes athletes.
What would Muir, PHS and Blair programs be like if just half of the great athletes that opt for private schools stayed in the Pasadena system?
Boys soccer
Blair won the Pomona Tournament against Pomona
4-1.
Blair had some smooth sailing after their first match played in the tournament with almost all the bench throughout the tournament.
Blair is going to be a force to handle in the RHL league. the only thing stopping them is them selfs.

Fred,
Monrovia girls' soccer success should be no surprise. I realize they lost a lot of key players to graduation, but their coach is Randy Medina. He has built the softball program into a perennial contender and now it appears that he has solidified the soccer program. He builds programs, not just one-off seasons. As long as Medina is on campus, look for sustained success in Soccer and Softball, or anything else he is involved with. I wish Medina had time to coach more sports. Their is just something about winning personalities and a commitment to excellence that permeate throughout the ranks.
From the Daily Breeze online:
Chadwick 2, Westridge 1: Christen Press scored her 13th goal of the season for visiting Chadwick (8-1-1, 3-0). Ashley Nendick also scored for Chadwick, which had 18 shots on goal. Goalkeeper Sammy Hale had five saves.
Hey, do not count out Maranatha Boys Soccer team yet, they have 5 starters on the football team that will join the soccer team next week....
Anyone know the outcome of today's Westridge-Chadwick match?
Fred,
Actually Maranatha Girls are 7-0-1. No loss but a tie with Westridge. Also, their defense is strong. 4 goals so far, all from set plays (free kicks and corners).
Hey, guys what's the news about the boys! How is the LCHS tournamnet going... What have the scores been.. We know that Royal is going to the finals...but who are they playing...How have the other teams done!.. Any news on them..
Maranatha girls are legit!! I was only at the game until half, the score was 6-0 so there wasn't much to stay around for. I'm guessing their coach told them only to use their left foot and if they had the shot to shoot with their eyes closed. I felt sorry for Duarte...they just seemed stuck in cement.
Maranatha sure has been impressive, 7-1 and scoring a lot of goals. I'm going to have to rethink my top ten next week.
Thanks Jim, I've been watching their box scores. Must be nice having Johnson in December.
Fred, Sacred Heart lost 4-0 to Thousand Oaks but should have beaten Westridge on Tuesday. I agree that they are the class of the area based on depth alone but at the same time a team that can't finish is asking to get beat.
Fred,
La Salle girls now 5-0 having outscored their opponents, 20-3, and getting contributions from multiple freshmen in addition to their 10-deep senior class. They will be tested next week playing up north in Walnut Creek at a tournament featuring mostly larger schools. Just keeping you informed. :-)
Your boys top ten needs a bit of reconsideration.
SP boys soccer got a red card half way through the first half, resulting in a pk. The pk was missed and the Tigers played pasadena poly with ten players the rest of the way.
Especially in the second half, pasadena poly barely could move the ball to SP side of the field, and SP won the game 1-0 with 10, beating your 9th ranked team. Oh and dont forget that Marshall game was a 2-1, and the goalie is playing much better now...
Hi John, I can't recall who beat FSHA, but I know it was a very good team. When it comes to area teams, FSHA is as good or better than anyone. They might get beat soundly by some teams in the Mission League, but what other area team could compete in the Mission League? I've always thought it was unfortunate that FSHA is forced to compete in Division I, because they usually lose in the first round, while other schools of similar size advance deep in the playoffs. If FSHA was in Div. V last year with the Rio Hondo and Prep League teams, I bet they would have been in the finals taking on Chadwick instead of Monrovia.
Mr Soccer, someone already has beaten Sacred Heart soundly and it will happen again. Lots of ball chasers but where are the finishers??? They look good but not championship caliber by any standard.
BTW, great game on Friday, defending champion Chadwick at Westridge, 3 p.m.
Since I covered Westridge already, I'm going to check out the Pacific League boys game between Muir and Arcadia at Arcadia at 3:15, should be a good one.
Mr. Soccer, you're right, I still like my top three, Westridge, Pasadena and FSHA. I think La Salle is creeping closer, and Monrovia has been a surprise.
Westridge has to be a better finishing team, but defensively, they're difficult to penetrate.
When all is said and done, FSHA will probably emerge as the top team. They have more depth than anyone, and their speed is unmatched.
Looks like your Top 10 is staying in tact Fred! Pretty good game yesterday, 0 - 0 Westridge against an impressive Sacred Heart Team. Can anyone beat this team with such a strong back line?
Boys SP soccer at home today
against the #9 ranked team in the star news pasadena poly.
As mentioned in an earlier post, the La Salle girls soccer team is one to watch. Coach Sal Lopez has them playing ggod tem soccer. Go Lancers!!
riverside nort 0
blair 2
at the pomona tournament
La Salle girl's beat a very tought La Canada team 4-3 Tuesday evening and then came back Wednesday beating Temple City 5-0.
Girls Soccer:
Burbank 1
Arcadia 1
the St. francis game is on friday @ Santa Barbara
Does anyone have the scores from the LCHS boys tournament?
Marshall, LCHS,
mrsandwhich-
That was a girls soccer score. The Burbank girls are something like GF 26 and GA 3. They should have a big impact in the Pacific League.
Fred, La Salle girls play at Temple City on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. if you are looking for a game although FSHA-Westridge is probably a better matchup
Freddy...good matchups this week:
Wednesday Flintridge Sacred Heart plays at Westridge---a good test for both teams and an even better test of your pre-season top ten!
burbanksports...was the alhambra vs burbank score for girls or boys?
I am amazed that Arcadia is a ranked team. As they played LaSalle to a 0-0 tie last night. They did not look impressive..... If they did LaSalle should be ranked as well, because they beat Catheral last year as well and they are in their league this year.... I wonder how these teams are ranked and who's doing the ranking...
Good Girls matchup:
Burbank vs Arcadia
Burbank 11
Alhambra 0
St. Francis Update:
Tournament Champions!!!!!!
St. Francis: 4
Valencia: 0
SF Soccer: 6-0
Good matchup on thursday SF vs. Santa Barbara.
Todays Result
Keppel 1
Muir 4
Keppel Played with 10 players the last 15 minutes of the first half and all of second half.
I'm still trying to gather all the soccer schedules, but if anyone knows a good matchup this week, let me know?
Glad to see a new soccer post starting up. interesting bringing up that westridge-sp game. I think that South Pas showed they can and will hold their own this year. Without co-captain center mid ashley mckenzie, the sp tigers held westridge well. The tiger defense, kept sturdy by sweeper Tara Garriot (usual sweeper Gaelen Stanford Moore was also out due to injury) as well as co-captain goalkeeper Taylor Thurman.
South Pasadena shows to be low on early CIF ranking, but this will doubtlessly be corrected soon. Injuries are being repaired and the team will come out to be the young power houses.
Monrovia has been set back by the loss of Kevorkian, Puffinburger, and Chacon. Will they have the strenth to rebuild within a single season?
It's amazing how far Monrovia soccer has come. Great work, Coach Medina!
