Those who think NASCAR is boring because 99% of the time they only turn left are the same ones who will watch 3 hours of baseball and only get 9-10 minutes of acutal playing time. Just about everyone I grew up with could play baseball to some degree, but how many people do you know can drive a race car 200 MPH, inches from another car going 200 MPH and not get someone killed or injured? Yea, watching a NASCAR race can sometimes be very boring, but if you understand what is going on with the driver, his/her crew chief and how to interpit the actions of the race car, then you have a much deeper understanding and appreation for the sport.

Poly can rightfully claim being the best small school football team in the SGV this year. I do think however that RHP and Maranatha had the talent to beat Poly but Poly was on a mission and earned every honor bestowed upon them.

As for the "realignment" the Prep League is victim to its own success which is the primary reason it was moved to D-XII. I agree that it will take an extraordinary effort to emerge as Champions at that level. It doesn't make sense. I think Maranatha is larger than most of the Prep schools so they too may face a different future.

RH Prep was where they had longed to be after years and years as an 8-man football dynasty---at the 11-man level where everyone said they couldn't compete. I know RHP never wants to go back to the 8-man days and they hardly blinked when they were informed of the move to D-XII. Actually based on enrollment RHP should be in the Lower (smaller) division of 8-man football...right, Twin Pines never wants to see RHP again!

I just wanted to mention that the last team that St. Margrets lost to was Rio Hondo Prep. I am rooting for Maranatha and my husband and I are hoping to go to the game. I have 2 sisters that went to Maranatha. I, myself are a Duarte High alum. What an exciting season! I would like to know however, who made the decision to move the Prep league up to a higher division? RHP has 85 students! We have 9 boys in the senior class this year! I don't want to sound too bitter - but we would probably going to a RHP vs Pasadena Poly Championship this week. And I really feel bad for Poly because this should have been their year! Oh well, life's not fair and our boys learned that lesson early on. So all I can say is "Maranatha beat St. Margrets and bring the trophy home for all of us. GO MINUTEMEN! P.S. We (RHP) do still have the SLEDGE HAMMER!

I agree with Panterfball. I think this was the best Poly team I have seen - it is a shame that they couldn't have played longer - they just aren't going to have the size especially on the line to compete in the bigger school division that they have been put in. I don't know what can be done about it.

We are definitely missing d XIII at Poly. I'm sure I am preaching to the choir here, but don't you find it a bit ludicris that RH Prep and Poly (90 and 340 students respectively) are playing schools such as San Jacinto (1500 students and past success) and Riverside ND (800 students and a d-VI powerhouse in the late 90s). This year's Poly team was one of our best in school history and still couldn't make it past the quarters. As a Poly and Prep League fan I hate to say it, but if things stay the way they are neither Poly nor RH Prep will win a CIF football championship in the near future.

People want to cry about over talented underachievers getting beat and calling it bad luck. Or, they will cry about some other team as being “lucky.�

The fact is, American Baseball also lost in the World Baseball Classic to teams that had no where near the same talent. I enjoy watching egos getting beat on and off the field. It has become one of my favorite pastimes in professional sports.

Don’t hate the player/team, hate the game. At the end of the day, only the "scoreboard" matters.

no one from monrovia is whining. La salle beat us fair and square. Was there some questionable calls by the refs... yeah there was. Did it determine the outcome of the game....no. For some reason we couldnt figure out how to cover a runningback in the flats. La salle exploited that weakness that entire night. Now of course monrovia and temple city fans are gonna be bitter about losing to la salle. I mean come on its LA SALLE. Best believe, both monrovia and temple city will get la salle next year for sure. I mean We got la salle early in the season and truth be told, whether it be in the nfl,college, or high school, its very hard to beat a team twice in a season. I believe la salle will feel that this weekend against Verbum Dei. why do think Ohio State is glad their not playing Michigan again in the BCS championship game, because they know Michigan could get the buckeyes if they have another shot. If their is anything la salle is good at its exploiting weaknesses in the opponents weakness. Monrovia fell witness to that, but no one is whining about getting beat by la salle, please give me a break runner world

If a soccer tournament was scheduled a year in advance and the football team was still playing in CIF during this time, the team playing in the CIF semi-final playoffs should still take presidence. The lower field is a soccer field, put the soccer games down there and let the football team prepare for their CIF Semi Final game on the FOOTBALL FIELD! and if you don't, you could have at least made sure the lights were on at dusk on the lower field for the football team. And what about Friday? The only people on the football field on Friday was the girls soccer practice, not a scheduled game or tournament! Were was the football team? on the lower park and rec field. Bottom line is that the football program at DHS gets little, if any support from the admin!

falconpride: Could the fact that the football field was being used for a soccer tournament have anything to do with the fact that the tournament was scheduled a year in advance and participating schools had already paid their fees and set their schedules?
How can anyone fault Duarte High School Administration for not planning for its football team to still be playing in December? When is the last time an accident like that happened?

Way to go Falcon Pride. Ask the DHS Administration one question. How many people pay to see a Girls Soccer game. You're right, zero. Case closed. I hope someone from DHS admin sees this.

Coach Crutchfield and the rest of us football parents need to call out the Admin at DHS more to get the support from the school that they have lacked so many years. This year is the 1st time any of us parents can remember since 1969 that DHS made it this far is CIF Playoffs. But last week, this League Champion and CIF Semi finalist team was subjected to practicing on the lower parks and rec field without lights while GIRLS SOCCER used the lighted football field for their practices. Where's the support for Cruthfield and all that he's done for the football program? How does the Athletic Director put this potential championship football team on substandard unlighted field to prepare for biggest game of the season and put girls soccers who aren't even in league yet on the football field? It's a crime, I tell you. The school needs to start backing the football program NOW! The only reason this team even had HOME Jerseys for CIF this year was because a parent found a private sponsor to buy the entire team new Jerseys and pants. What has the school given to the football program to support them? Nothing! Maybe the team will at least get a Banquet to recognize their accomplishments this year from the school. WAKE UP DHS ADMIN!

I wonder if La Salle will have sustained success or if they are a one-trick pony, similar to Northwestern. Nobody will overlook you guys next year. Enjoy this year, though. You've earned it through four years of hard work (the senior class.) You guys are poster-board of what high school teams should do.

To all the bloggers who have stated: We were better, La Salle's a JV team, Our team had injuries, etc. etc. Everyone who loses usually has an excuse. Team sports is not just about "talent". It's how effective a group can work together to achieve a goal - to win a game. Sports history is full of smart, cohesive, determined teams that beat more individually talented tiams (purposefully misspelled). Need I mention the futility of USA basketball in the Olympics and World Championships.

There is no way to predict the outcome of Saturday's game except to say the best Team will win. So I suggest disgruntled TC, Monrovians and others who mention about their past teams stop the whinning and remember what Jim Rome says, "Scoreboard"!!!!

Verb is a great team with great athletes. Not only that, they are all quality boys who have worked hard in the classroom and on the field. I am proud that they are in the CRL and our opponent in the CIF championship game.

The Lancers might not have D1 prospects, like Verb, but they play just as hard. Not only that, but coach Gallagher, DiFiori and Peterson have prepared them all season to be the best they can be. They are disciplined, smart and physically conditioned. I am looking forward to see AJ, Casey, Matt, Bill & Tommy prepare the way for Matt Kohorst, Jared McRae, David Baier and Nathan Bury (who rushed for 203 yards, received for 33 and scored 3 touchdowns against Verb this season). Also look for Andy Saldana to block for both David and Nathan. And how about our receivers like Tyson, Wesley, Ryan and Dale. We are a balanced team with running and passing opportunities. La Salle's defense is awesome and getting better every game. Look for Andy Saldana, Patrick Grochmal, John Stoddard, Wesley Riley, Jeff Knowles, Ryan Doeppel, Michael Palffy and last, but not least, Troy Whitehead.

I think Jordan Canada attended Clifton. There's one more Canada that I believe is in middle school now. I heard he's already bigger than Jordan.
LaValle Peterson has a younger brother that plays pop warner for LaCanada. The Peterson tradition will continue in 4 or 5 years from now.

Wow, great to see you guys work overtime to find a photographer for La Salle. We wouldn't want them to go a week without being the main front-page cover story.

Sure wish you'd had that same desire to "speak to the higher ups" for Maranatha the last couple of weeks. All we got was "it's not your turn because you're not playing locally." Same accomplishment, same coverage...is that too much to ask? Not if you're La Salle.

I know that the Maranatha faithful like to just go the grin-and-bear-it route, but this paper's favoritism is just plain irritating.

I do like how Crutchfield called out his school's administration. Said they haven't always been supportive and he's trying to get them onto the same page. No kidding. Something was certainly lacking.

Unfortunately, comments like that can ruffle your boss's feathers and get a coach pushed out. Even Jimmy Johnson got pushed out of Dallas after winning two Superbowls. Gotta be careful what you tell the papers, Coach.

I read the name Canada in an article about Duarte a while back. I figured it was the same lineage. Similar to Greg playing at Duarte and Mike playing at Monrovia. The battle over Mountain avenue will always be there.

TC was anything but inconsistent this year. They we're 10-2. They're 2 losses came aginst teams that are playing for the CIF Championship against each other this Saturday (and we all know how us TC folks feel about how we might have done against LS with our full line up that day).

Was intimidation a factor in your blowout loss to Verbum Dei Saturday? (see Coach's comments in this paper leading up to the game and your earlier posts)

As for La Salle folks...best of luck against the Eagles...This is one rematch I really want to see.

Regarding not playing Verb in 2002 and 2003. During those years Verbum Dei, begin the program that is there motto which is 'The School that Works'. (Each student works one day per week at a business and the proceeds go to the school.) After they began that program there were many students that left the school and the logistics of working out when the athletes worked on different days had to be co-ordinated. After making that adjustment and building up the student body varsity sports returned.

Our game against St. Margaret's was close last year. It was played in the rain at RH Prep. They were solid, passed a fair amount with an athletic quarterback who was not afraid to run. We gained over 300 yards offensively but the quality of play was marred somewhat by the conditions. They didn't like our field---big surprise!

Big rush and pressure from the get-go on these guys. Contain the QB was the call for last year. I know nothing of them this year.

I agree that La Salle can't let Verb get on a big early scoring run, but don't forget that this Lancer team has been down 14-0 to both TC and Monrovia before winning. They don't panic or get away from their game plan when they fall behind.

Here is a brief history of the La Salle - Verbum Dei football rivalry. Most of this happened before I was associated with La Salle. It is listed on the La Salle website.
1999, 2000, 2001 Verbum Dei beat La Salle, the 2001 score was 55-0. As I understand it, 2002 and 2003 is when Verb reset their sports program, so no games are listed with La Salle.
2004 La Salle beat Verb at La Salle 20-14 to clinch the league title. 2005 Verb beat La Salle at Verb 18-0, it was a close game, Verb wins the league. 2006 La Salle beat Verb at La Salle 37-36 in a see-saw contest, La Salle is 2006 Camino Real League Champs.
La Salle has also competed against Verb in basketball, with both teams winning home games last year to tie for the championship. With realignment, Verb is not in La Salle's's league in basketball now.
La Salle has had two playoff home games and a short bus ride to Monrovia, so they don't have jet lag:)
As I have mentioned, the facility at Compton Centennial is right off the 105 freeway, and is very similar to Monrovia's field and stands. There was plenty of security, in the parking lots and inside.
Lancer fans will be there in force on Saturday night. I am convinced that their support has helped the football team in their playoff run, especially at Monrovia.

No satisfaction for you regarding crowning a local small school champ from either Maranatha, RH Prep or Poly. The only match up this year pitted RH Prep and Maranatha and we know how that turned out. Then RH Prep and Poly and we know how that turned out.

Good morning everyone. I will update this blog with a new thread tonight. I'll be out of the office most of the day talking to your favorite people from La Salle and Maranatha. By the end of the day, game times and locations should be finalized.

Sure wish we could see one of the Prep League quality teams (Poly or Rio Hondo) play either Maranatha or La Salle in the finals. The CIF moved the Prep League to Div XII to play much larger school leagues because of success in previous years' playoffs.

whoever scores 1st in the VERB/LA SALLE game will be the winner. la salle has got to dominate the time of possession to win this game and have their D backfield step up big time. they have to score 1st to take any momentum out of verb, because once verb gets rolling well....

I've been to the last two Verbum Dei games in support of TC and Duarte and I didn't have any problems there. The field is pristine and the stands are pretty big.

What I don't understand is why the Camino Real #1 would play the Camino Real #2 at CR #2's house...that's baffling. Why be #1 if you don't get homefield :/

I mistakenly have been saying Compton because that is where Verb has been playing their playoff games at, but they are most definitely in Watts (Central and 108th). I'm just glad this has all come down to the CRL, who has shown much more class and talent than many expected. Good luck to both teams, but...

Verbum Dei is a catholic school. ...and to others that have stated it's location as Compton, it's in Watts, which is part of Los Angeles, not Compton. The game most likely will be played in Compton because there school field doesn't have lights or enough seating capacity.

Verbum Dei was opened after the 60's Watts riots as an effort to provide quality education at an affordable price to the residents of that area.

According the CIF Football Playoff bulletin, it has to do with the number of home games each team has hosted during the playoffs. If it's equal it comes down to a coinflip. L S lost the coinflip so it's Verb's choice where the game will be with CIF approval.

Based on what I've read in the Bulletin it's all about the history of that division playoffs and attendance. If the site that Verb proposes has enough seating capacity it will be approved.

It doesn't matter where the game is. You just have to play your heart out. It's the chance of a lifetime and one never knows when that opportunity will come again and certainly for the seniors of both sides h.s. football will be over at the conclusion of Saturday's game. Verb and L S have played some extremely close games in recent years. Personally I enjoy the games with Verb. A good opponent makes U play at the top of your game. I have come to respect the kids by talking with them during track. They are nice kids, very respectful.

...and I was at that game that Serra played vs. Lompoc. It was a long ride home. That experience definitely underscored the importance of home field advantage. The team left Serra about 1 or 2 o'clock. The rooter bus left Serra about 4 or 5 and we barely made it for kickoff. Serra lost. But it was an extremely close game. Lompoc wore Serra down. Did the bus ride have anything to do with it, I don't know I don't play football, but it could have. I think the biggest difference was the crowd. Since the game was so far from Gardena, I think the Serra fan that might have decided to attend at the last minute wasn't in attendance and even though there were several rooter buses and lot's of Serra supporters that made the trip the crowd wasn't the same as a home game. With that being said, L S students, fans and supporters will have to make a special effort to be out there on Saturday night to support the football team where ever the game is played. It is important to the athletes that we show them support and make some noise. If possible the band, cheerleaders and everyone else and more should be at the game. L S needs to show Lancer PRIDE and support our coaches and players. I'm altering what I was supposed to do Saturday night to be there and I'm sure others can also. It's the least that we can do to support our team for a hard season that has them on the brink of something historical.

It is a monumental task for La Salle to beat Verb twice in one season. The first game was a barn burner, I believe the redux will be the same. The Lancers will find a way to win. The team believes in the coaches. They have all drank the Kool Aid. They know that Gallagher, Di Fiori and Peterson will find the weaknesses and exploit them. Victory is imminent. Maxpreps can not measure that. This is what The LA Times wrote the week of Nov 16 on an article with their divisional picks by Martin Henderson:
"Mid Valley: La Salle, after losing its first five games, the last against No. 2 Monrovia, 52-19, has won five in a row, beginning with a victory over No. 1 Temple City, 21-14. A rematch with Monrovia looms in the second round, and the thinking here is that La Salle is a vastly different team since their first meeting".
The Lancers will be making sure the prediction becomes reality, even if it is against all odds.

I think since '99 or 2000 a bit after I had already graduated. The seniors on this team, when they were freshman, had to play a game against the Verb Varsity. I don't remember the reason why, but it was La Salle JV v. Verbum Dei varsity, back in '02-'03. They have also been to Compton for games a couple of times, and know the Verb guys on and off the field. (Like at league track meets). So you will not see LS shell-schocked under any circumstances at Compton. Your assesment will most likely be true NY, this is going to be a great game between the two best teams in the MVD.

I've never figured out how the CIF chooses fields for the divisions that Monrovia has played in. Some teams get to host on their home field and some have to go to a different field near their home if they win the flip.

In 1998, Monrovia had to play Paso Robles on Paso's home field, which was actually on its local junior high school campus. Yet, in 1999 Monrovia hosted Paso Robles at Citrus College. Supposedly it has something to do with stadium capacity. I don't buy it, though. Paso's stadium was not very big.

I defenitely think ELAC has the proper facilities and is neutral for both parties. I don't see that happening for some reason.

when and where is the verb LS game?

They should move the LS, Verb game to a neutral site, a few of the local community colleges have very nice facilities. Maybe with some planning the coaches could have gotten E. LA Colleges stadium, wich is one of the nicest in the area. That would be nice. They should still try, I cant see why not.

I have La Salle winning this one. Although, as we saw with Monrovia and La Salle, game two can be completely different than game one.

I think La Salle will control the ball and clock, take Verb out of their explosive game that they play and win by a touchdown. I'm sure that was Coach Mooney's strategy as well, but that initial fumble put them behind the 8 ball.

La Salle vs. Verb. is sort of like Lompoc vs. Serra a few years ago, when Lompoc won a close one.

If La Salle does not win, though, it likely means that Verb has momentum, things get ugly, and Verb blows them out. I just don't see things getting out of hand, though.

The Cal Prep predictions are up and it has Verbun Dei 31 – La Salle 27 and St. Margaret’s 31 – Maranatha 21. Remember all this site does is crunch numbers but has around a 75% correct prediction rate.
With Cal Prep predicting Maranatha as the favorite throughout the playoffs I hope this isn’t bad karma. I just hope Campa picks St. Margaret’s as his favorite because he’s been wrong throughout Maranatha’s playoff run.

verbum dei will win 38-14, they are too big and too fast. La Salle may have 2 or 3 quick guys, thats great, but aside form their lineman, VD has a quick TEAM. Not to mention their size. VD's 0-line is weak, so, pending the legitimacy of Jimenez's talent, he should fair well, but i guarantee a VD win by 14+ points, they are great, La Salle is good at best.

It will be a home game for Verbum Dei, so most likely it will occurr at the same location as the semi-final game on Saturday the 9th at 7:30.

It's just my professional opinion based on playing both squads this year and having lots of playoff experience losing to CIF Champs/Finalists in my career at SM and TC(Bloomington,Inglewood, Lompoc, Serra, Crespi)

Minutemen fan, as a I said last week, Maranatha has photo priority this week being at home while La Salle is away, but I'm going to work really hard to convince the bosses that both games deserve front page pictures and headlines.
I'll confirm on Monday, but I believe someone told me that Maranatha would play its championship at San Marino on Saturday night. Man, I wish these games were split up, with one on Friday and one on Saturday. Campa and I would love to be at both of them.

I think you forgot to mention the depth la salle has on the d-line, multiple 2nd stringers with multiple sacks and tackles in the double digits.

If there are any doubters still left out there about how strong a team Verbum Dei is, then you must also realize how powerful of a squad La Salle is. To beat such a powerhouse (and irrigardless of what any malcontent may say, they had all their weapons that Saturday afternoon at Lancer Field) you have to do it with brawn, which La Salle has plenty of. I have been saying it all along this season on this blog. The difference with La Salle as in any great team is its line. There is not another O Line or D Line to rival it in the Division. That was the determinant factor in the victory over Verb, as it was with TC as it was with M-Town. To face Verb again will be La Salle greatest challenge, this Fred will be La Salle's Biggest Game in History.
They have gotten here hitched to a strong team of horses: Mendoza, Quigley, Preston, Hilland and Jimenez on the O Line and Bury, Hilland, Quigley and Jimenez on the D. Casey Hilland throws players around like they were rag dolls. Think about it, he, Quigley and AJ as Jimenez is affectionately called by the team battle each other daily at practice. They push each other to be better and push they do.
I hate to see people on this blog continue to bash the Lancers, so be it. As my soul brother said: Sour Grapes.
The game aginst Verb has the odds stacked against La Salle. It is hard for a team hat won on the season to come back and beat the same opponent on the playoffs. Ask M-Town, they are still scratching their M-Town nuggen adding up the x's and o's.
However, La Salle is a team that has beaten all the odds and I personally will not bet against them.
So M-Town if you are the same one which bet me the 1 large over LA and M and you pitifully squelched on, keep the $50's handy. Let us know where we can go collect, ok cacaroach!!!

Someone mentioned that it would be easy to play Verbum Dei because they have played before.

First it is never easy to play a quality opponnent a second time and secondly any coach will tell you it's never easy to play a league rival a 2nd time during the year.

With that said it should be a very close contest as was the first game.

I recall the coaches saying that Maranatha desired a game but at the time contracts or negotiations were already in place for the pre-season games.

Plus from a personal standpoint I felt that at the time based on Maranatha's prior record that playing a team from a lower division that at the time wasn't perceived as strong wouldn't prepare L S properly. If L S had known that Maranatha would be the powerhouse it turned out to be ...

Maranatha vs. St Margaret's - it will be a good one - I am sure that Coach Murphy has his plan in place to prepare our boys, mentally, physically, and spiritually- for the game of their young lives. I played ball M-Town, I'm sure you are a warrior just like so many of us who strapped it on are. (Let me tell you, when I played at LS you would have beat us 50-10 every time, so we're excited to have come up in the world-give us a break!) Sometimes you have to give it up and not hate. I thought the coverage was more than fine and Campa reporting was fair and in no way would hurt anybody's self esteem - give me a break and grow up before you start effecting your kid. You seem new to sports - so I suggest you attend a local college or progame and then go to the paper to read the story - I think you will be amazed to find that they don't write about every play - play by play and you will also find that that they don't even mention plays that you thought were important - they have limited space and must leave even key plays out. Fred and Campa are beyond fair and they are the last to say anything negative about a kid or a team - they always keep it positive - a lesson that would be good for you to learn. Since you are obviously new to football "scampered" is the correct word. Stop blogging you are giving Maranatha a bad name.

all i have to say is wow! verbum dei is for real! that is the most athlectic team i seen play this year period. a watch fox sports and seen those team play too. that team is really good. cant say anything that was the better team hats off.

I'd like to see Monrovia in the finals against anybody right now. Unfortunately, we squandered a great opportunity. As it is, I think we need to support La Salle (wouldn't it be better to say we got beat by #1 rather than #2? To say that La Salle is a giant, rather than a giant killer? Also, we need some titles in the West SGV.) and get ready for next year.

Monrovia will always have enough talent coming from our junior high schools to compete for a CIF title three years later. Our challenge is getting from point A (Clifton and Santa Fe) to point Z (CIF title 3-4 years later).

I want it to be known that Coach of the year - Joel Murphy asked La Salle last year if they would want to play Maranatha this year. They said NO! I'll bet my HOUSE that they will continue to avoid the the "Red Machine" again when Murphy asks for next year. We'll take you on at our place or yours! The time has come for the rivlry to include football and may I add Baseball!

As I told one Lancer fan last week who said "Where's the love for the Lancers?" On the the front page of the Star-News sport section, that's where! As usual, La Salle was given top billing on the front page and 2nd page with a photo on each page.

Campa...I must say that even though you lacked some faith in our beloved Minutemen, we greatly appreciate the coverage that you have given to the Men! When we win CIF, we would like very much to have a half page photo and top billing on the front page for next Saturday. Your headline was right in claiming that "Maranatha continues to amaze". The Lancers are having a great season but this season marks the complete ARRIVAL of the so called "Crown Jewel of the Valley". The birth of a program that will continue to win and grow into a powerhouse while the likes of St. Francis and La Salle will lose many of the best kids to Maranatha. Maranatha has waited a long...long... time for a place to call their home and now they have the finest campus in the valley! Mark my words...La Salle will avoid Maranatha again next year and say NO to coach Murphy once again.

Thanks New York that is what i was trying to get across.We (monrovia) were the better team out there and we just didnt play like it.I remember stretching on the field and looking over at LS thinking,we got this.They arent ready.And you know what?we turned out to be not ready and they were.And we werent ready because La Salle was such a pathetic excuse of a varsity football team the first time around that even blair would have beat them by 30+ points.So the second time around we played down to the pathetic level of our JV opponent we lost and it will burn forever because we got beat by the team that could have lost to our Rio Hondo League Champ JV team.if they were ready and so were we well than it would have went how the Verb Duroc game is going right now.But it didnt so we lost our shot at the rings.and im hoping we get another shot next year.For the sake of the schools history.Anyway La Salle, "We've had the loss in our back pocket all season,we want them.They better be ready"_Verbum Dei player.I will give everybody on this blog $50 if La Salle wins CIF hell ill give you everything i own and more if the score isnt Verb up by 30+.Verb is gunnna take it to La Salle like they have never seen befor and i say for verb to not even let up.Keep scoring and keep your starters in even after the score is 70-0 in the 3rd.make it a triple digit contest.I know you can.Man.A Verb Monrovia game would have been the buisness wouldnt it have been?man that would have been some game.

As a Monrovia grad of the mid-1990's, I can relate to feeling disappointed about losing to teams that we should have man-handled. Specifically, the well-coached, well-disciplined, hard-fighting San Marino teams whose head coach was a local legend (Bill Maloney) and offensive coordinator was Mike Mooney (now TC's head coach). SM was not lucky that my teams turned the ball over as many times as we did. That was our fault. SM indeed was the better team, even though we had them outmatched physically: bigger on the line, faster at the skill positions, etc. One year, I'm pretty sure our JV team would have beaten them even though my varsity team lost. Fundamentals and poise go a long way.

LS did not get lucky to beat Monrovia this year. They did what they needed to do to win, given the situation. We did not do what it took to win. I hope we learn our lesson and mimic their formula for success: no turnovers, good tackling and staying calm under pressure. These are not characteristics that come over night or through a pre-game speech. These are learned/drilled from the first day of summer workouts heading into Frosh football through the CIF finals Senior Year.

Don't give up hope. Don't overlook La Salle's success. Learn from it. We control our own destiny.

Everybody here knows deep down that La Salle didnt deserve the win over Monrovia.They did not play like the better team.They played like a team that got lucky that the best running back in the Div.,Area,SGV fumbled on a lucky 3 person hit where the kids helmet hit the ball out even thought James Davis was down and capitalized on it.Whatever.fine.but there is no way that you can say that LaSalle was the better team on the field and most def. not say that lasalle played like the best team on the field.They got lucky like they have been all season.And here is the deal on the final round.La Salle WILL LOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!1.if they play against Duarte then they will be smashed on by a mini-monrovia with the speed of monrovia.

Let's celebrate the Maranatha victory and move on - calling people out for what is written or not not written serves no purpose - every kid on that team played a part - every fan - every faculty member - every parent - every cheerleader, water girl, stat girl, sports med staff etc. There is no "I" in team - and while key plays were made that changed the course of the game (by the way #22 is Asher Book) - if you wrote about every play it would take the whole sports section. Congratulations to all the Maranatha players - we are in the finals and for that we should be celebrating!

Context, context, context. Hey' Maranatha called out Campa and we all had a fun laugh. No one was serious, we all shook hands, and like good people made good. Its as if two friends made a wager and the winner was able to give a little nudge and say "I told you so friend". Campa is a great guy, Fred is a wonderful contributor and we appreciate any lines or pats on the back Maranatha recieves. I hope our players get their encouragement from Christ, not a newspaper. Campa was and is a great sport about the joke. Nuff said.

Don't pull out the Rio Hondo Prep thing...extreme examples usually don't work. Look, I too used to look at La Salle as just a small division private school that doesn't recruit. That was probably true a couple years ago.

I can't speak to their enrollment policies, but these guys are currently playing great football. They are in the same division as Monrovia, have beaten Monrovia, a team that you had ranked at number one a couple weeks ago. Give credit where it's due. La Salle beat Verbum Dei as well. Why don't you think they would beat Muir?

The Rams had a great sason and it is a testament to your good coaching. I know a lot of the boys on your team and they are great kids from great families. Star News coverage of high school sports has improved tremedously in recent years. Fred Robledo is a class act and as a follower of West San Gabriel Valley prep sports I appteciate his efforts.

Fred, you may be right in your rankings, regarding the level of opposition Muir and St. Francis face. Thanks for clearing up the Duarte issue. At least the LS Lancers are coming up on your chart...

Why have the blogs turned so vicious? This was supposed to be informative and fun. I read but don't believe some of the posts. I assume most of the bloggers are adults but the posts don't seem so. We should all exercise some control here.

Anybody know for sure what time the Duarte Verbum Dei is tonight. I have seen 7:30 and 7 pm. Anybody know FOR SURE?

Also bagging on Campa because a players name didn't make the paper is ridiculous. For all you know it was edited out...you realize not every thing you want can make it into the paper. There are deadlines and restrictions on space.

Ok Fellas get off Fred and Campa's backs. La Salle and Maranatha BOTH have a history of losing...you can't complain that they weren't recieving coverage. Especially early in the season when La Salle was 0-5. La Salle didn't look legit till the end of the season.
Your teams are recieving the coverage they deserve now and I'm sure you will get a lot more next year. The reason the usual suspects are always in the top 10 and get the most coverage is because they have tradition. Maranatha and La Salle are creating theres as we speak. With tradition winning and publications follow.

you know what that true, we get know love, ever! its cool like i said before. temple city has been inconsistent all year. monrovia started off real strong but started to play bad at the end of the year. personaly due to cocahing that just my opinion. let's not forget we stopped the best running back in the div (most people said all year long) temple city didnt, we play a different kind of football. i have so much fate in duarte coaching staff. that's if we lose it's because there just a better team. but we will win!

I’m not here to defend or condone the Star News. I’ve been on Fred and Campa’s backs for weeks now on the lack of coverage we’ve received. I guess we need to look that it’s the Pasadena Star News and not the Pasadena Maranatha daily. They only have two prep reporters who must cover many sports and schools. I too would have loved to have seen pictures and a full page spread on last nights victory with all the highlights and players mentioned but with everything else the sports section has to cover it’s not happening. Yes, getting your name in the paper is something for an athletic. In my high school scrap book my Mom made there are the articles for my high school cross county and track days where I was mentioned and it’s great to look back on.
I did get to meet and talk to Campa after the game when I gave him the mustard to spread over the doubting prediction he made and he’s an alright guy.
Now, onto what I’ve said in past posts. It’s not the time to worry about things like coverage in the paper. Now is the time to rally and support our team in their quest to bring the CIF championship to Maranatha. Something we will always have. The excitement and pride these kids will have from that is something they’ll never forget.
Oh, I’m also a Pasadena Native, born, raised and still living in Pasadena.

I saw nothing wrong with the article that Campa wrote. There were so many kids that made a huge difference in that game last night. "that Jones kid" was just one of them.

That being said, the most important play of the game was made by #22 i believe. Not sure of his name. A game saving sideline tackle preventing a TD that would have made the score 27-10 Brentwood. I doubt his name was in the paper. but than again, thats not why these kids play the game.

Lancer D... You chimed in with something pretty stupid. The kids don't play to get their names in the paper. They play because they love the game. This is HIGH SCHOOL. But, again, if there's a player that deserves "recognition" that's what they should receive. You completely missed the point--wouldn't have matter who the kid's name was. For the record, Jones was playing the line last night too. He wasn't just in the LB position. And, yes, NONE of the lineman ever worry about their recognition in papers, although they do get it from time to time. What I do know for sure, Maranatha players have character that stems from something higher, as I know their philosophy stems from their final recognition to God. God is who they congratulate in the end of all their games. The point of my initial comment was a look at the adults and being "fair," as opposed to a kid who got a bit of a "back-handed" mention as stated. It might have been better not to write anything at all. Then it could have been a misprint or non-inclusion (in editorial) type of position. I know that game of journalism pretty well, it's part of my job in writing for major corporations on the AP internationally. If you're going to write something that applies, at least know what you're talking about.

Slight correction.. "your's and your colleagues" are the jobs that will go on. You like your spotlight Fred, that's only human. So it shouldn't be wrong for another.

One more thing, aside from the Maranatha issue, in reading about your rankings in schools for football "every" year, we always see St. Francis in the #1 position and all the hype on their players that goes with it. Yet, in all the year's of Bonds at the helm, the majority of their playoff games don't get past the first round. They've not seen a CIF Championship in quite some time. While they play in the "toughest" division, maybe it's time to see them scale down a notch or two, so they could actually get past the first round. But, I'm sure we'll see that Brown & Gold in the fall. But, fall, they just might do again.

I applaud your attempt to get to the bottom of alleged any vandalism at La Salle. I heard rumors, but I agree with you that the issue should be handled properly by school administrators. There is a chance that it is all an urban myth, or have nothing to do with TC.
Just to clarify one of your points about playing Broadnax in the La Salle game. This keeps coming up in Monrovia fans' postings. They keep saying that La Salle would have lost if he had played the full game. It is not an issue with La Salle fans. Injuries, grade suspensions, disciplinary suspensions, and other reasons are part of football. A team cannot control who is going to show up to play them. I as a fan look forward to watching La Salle play TC and Monrovia next year. Local games are great!

You couldn't be more wrong about Campa. Ask Maranatha people that have spoken to Andrew what they think of him, or anyone that he's covered all year. He's a class act, and always has been. Shame on you.

It was good to see that someone pointed out Campa and his incorrect (once again biased) reporting. After reading the back-handed honorable mention to the Jones kid on page 2 ("scampered" was a borderline insult at best), who WAS the difference of the game, sacked the QB, made the 1st down for the final drive of MHS on a 4th & down, to actually help win the game, all while playing both ways the entire game and visually coaching the defense on the field to compensate for the loss of Clash--well, let's just say its nice to see the PSN want to adversely affect a player's self-esteem. While Love and Delahooke rightly deserve their light in the spot, how about the kid who quietly took charge and was the name heard most on the PA system all night? And what about Julian Boyd? What happened to his crucial interception or TD? Another kid who gets next to nothing. Congrats. to the writers who have helped me make the decision to cancel the PSN once next week's game is over after getting the paper for several decades. I want to be sure I have all the clippings compiled before I write a letter to the Editor. Remember, Campa, you have an obligation to write about these kids so that it doesn't hurt their motivation and self-esteem, but that's clearly what you did. I hope the coaches are able to help these kids through it and I hope maybe they give them some recognition the next time they help win again. Spotlights should be given to all who are deserving, not just the favorites. But, then again, that's what the media is good at doing-- Highlighting the favorites. I almost forgot the Rupert Murdoch standards of life.

I am just a high school football fan that that has closely followed all prep sports in this area the past 30 or so years. My son played for a local small school that won a CIF Championship while he was there so I know how exciting it can be.
My observation of La Salle is that of a school with an inferiority complex that manifests itself in a very ugly way when any of its teams enjoy success.
Maybe some positive results will give the school a winning attitude...it certainly would change many outsiders perception of what the La Salle "supporters" are all about.

I'm not a La Salle fan but to say they would have lost to Monrovia or Bishop Diego if not for the opposition turnovers is ridiculous. Championship teams don't give away games on turnovers...that simple. And if you turn the ball over conistently you deserve to lose.
At the same time I say to all La Salle band wagon riders "get over it."

As an Administrator and Head Coach at Temple City I am deeply concerned about the postings regarding vandalism. If anyone on this blog has specific information I would like you to contact me at 626-548-5160 so that we may follow up on it. To date, we have not been contacted by anyone from La Salle's coaching staff or Administration regarding these alleged incidents.

Despite the opinion that some of you have formed about Temple City via postings on this blog, we do not condone, nor accept this type of behavior from any of our students, much less my football players. I welcome any of your comments or concerns at the above listed contact number as I take the perception of my school and team very seriously.

Regarding crowd issues at home games, I will forward these concerns to our Athletic Director and my Administrative colleagues.

Congrats La Salle and Maranantha. Sure wish it was TC though.

I have held back on this all year but enough is enough.

Dwight Broadnax did not play a single down versus La Salle.

He sprained his ankle in Week 3 towards the end of the San Gabriel game and it was not responding well to treatment.

We were never going to play him full time versus La Salle regardless of his ankle's condition, our record, La Salle's record, with the beginning of our league schedule the following week.

He was dressed out and went through warm ups in the hopes of getting some playing time but I did not feel he was ready to go based on what I saw and I made the call to not play him.

That decision had nothing to do with lack of respect for La Salle or a belief that we would win no matter what. Additionally, Dwight had no input on that decision. He would've played in far worse condition if I would've let him. He is incredibly tough and it absoulutely killed him to sit and watch things fall apart that day. Anybody that knows me and how competitive I am will tell you I would've put him to get that win once the second half started to unravel if I had the slightest feeling he could go full speed and not hurt himself further.

Hope that clears it up for all of you LS fans. Celebrate your success and best of luck to you.

I have to also give props to Brentwood's team and fans. They were a class act all the way. Well done and keep your heads up, it was a great game and you played strong!

I agree that Coach Murphy should be named coach of the year. Not only has he coached our sons to a place Maranatha has never been in Football, but he has taken the high road. I've been on the sidelines during every varsity game and many J.V. games. Murphy doesn't use profanity and doesn't belittle his players. I can't say the same for other coaches. Murphy's players respect him and WANT to give him their best performance. They encourage each other because of his example, and he teaches his players to play fairly and with good sportsmanship towards each other and their opponents.

Crazy, Duarte hasn't been in our rankings all year because they're "technically" a Trib school for rankings purposes.
If I ranked them in ours, they would be No. 4 behind La Salle.
If the question becomes how would Muir and St. Francis do in an area tournament with La Salle, Monrovia, Temple City, Maranatha and everyone else, yeah, I like the Mustangs and Knights in a final. Muir and St. Francis "crumbled" in extremely tough divisions, and the Mission League the Knights compete in is by far the most competitive.

Fred you have got to be kidding!!! La Salle # 3? Please check your calculator again and what about no love for Duarte? These are the two teams still in the hunt for the champioship, the others are sitting at playing M-Box!!!

La Salle fans, you may not want to keep reading...or begin fuming.

I really feel that Bishop Diego was not a very good football team. They were mediocre at best. Your La Salle squad is solid and they've done what they should do to win, but the road has been decidely easier than some other local schools. The win streak prior to CIF is less impressive when you look at the records of the CRL teams top to bottom. How challenging has the CRL schedule has been outside of Verb?

Does anyone else on here believe that a mistake free Monrovia team or a healthy TC team would've soundly defeated both LS or BD. Of course, you've got to play the games and La Salle is taking advantage of the opportunities afforded them.

I know the LS faithful will jump all over me but there have got to be some other unemotionally involved football fans that saw the game last night who watched local football this year that share my opinion.

Regardless, a win is a win and those kids at La Salle should be thrilled to be moving on.

I have arrived at my conclusions with specific regard to the MV Division based on watching the following games:
TC/Alhambra
Verb/LS Week 8
TC/LS
Monrovia/WC
Monrovia/ARC
Monrovia/TC
TC/LC
Monrovia/LS CIF

Having watched a lot of TC this year, I just think had they played in Monrovia's half of the bracket, the TC team I saw vs LC and Monrovia (Week 8/9) would still be playing. I don't think they spit up the rock 4 times and allow LS in the game. That's just not the kind of football that I've watched TC play this year.

The clock will strike midnight next week. So long as Verb or Duarte don't make several costly mistakes like Monrovia, the better talent will prevail. (see SC v UCLA lately)

It's no slight against La Salle, just one local observer's opinion. I hope they win it but I'd be shocked if they do.

New York, what La Salle and Maranatha have done and continue to do is amazing, I'm not diminishing what they have accomplished. Those are fair rankings considering size, divisions, schedules and everything else.
By your rationale, if this blog had been here last year, you would want me to rank Rio Hondo Prep as the top team because they were the only area team to win a championship.

Just for the record Verb was at full strenght!!!!against La Salle, with Ayers, Dunn, Lacey, Merritt an Wilson. The winning touchdown the Lancers ran right at Ayers with #70 Jimenez burrying him while #33 Bury ran right over them! Broadnax was kept on the sidelines by Mooney, 'cause he thought he would not need him, when he realized he did, it was too late, piss poor planning by the coaching staff, and he would have ended up on his Braodnax even if he would have shown, but he failed to do that. Did not answer the bell!!! The Lancers front line is intimidating and moved round TC like school children, perhaps he got wet feet, or maybe it was the 100 degree weather, or PLAYING ON A SATURDAY, OR WHAT EVER OTHER EXCUSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD. In Monrovia you saw perfect execution of a flawless Offense and a Defense that bent, but DID NOT break.
At this point in the RACE it is not LUCK it is skill!
The Lancers are going to the Championship Game, that is the undisputed fact and they did it by beating the best teams in this division!!!

From a strong league run, Co-champions of the Alpha league to the playoffs. A somewhat weak first game against Sage Hill and then the total domination against Salesian HS to last night’s nail biter against Brentwood. Man, does it get any better than this? A championship CIF game next Saturday at home.
Sorry that I missed Coach Murphy’s emotional speech to the players, students, parents and fans after the game but that was a sight to see. I was busy talking to Campa.
So onto the finals. Whether it’s Whittier Christian or St. Margaret’s were in the game that we’ve strived for and it will be a great one.
Congratulations to La Salle for advancing to the finals also. Best of luck and let’s bring two titles back to Pasadena

Fred, can you just delete all the "La Salle is just lucky" posts. Not only are they inaccurate, they are getting a little sour, like old milk.
Anyone who watched the TC, 2nd Monrovia, or Verbum Dei game knows that suberb conditioning and coaching has turned the La Salle season around. And since when has being able to put all your healthy players on the field been a negative. Props go to Trainer Jason Eisle and the Lancer coaching staff for producing a tough, injury free team week after week.

Congratulations to La Salle. The team is a class act all the way and they deserve everything they've gotten. Work hard this week as you prepare for something that you will remember the rest of your life. Good Luck!

It would have been nice to see a Poly Maranatha final. Poly had an incredible team this year - that I don't think it will repeat for a while (I hope I am wrong) - Poly and Prep are going to have no chance against the bigger schools in the playoffs - their academic standards are too high and the schools too small for that - I hope this doesn't discourage kids from comming out and playing - I don't know what can be done to change it. The CIF is unflexible and tone deaf.

Congrats to La Salle and Maranatha, who obviously survived the CIF's random reorganization better than other local teams. Failing to realize what it takes for a small school team to make it through a season (in any division) with 25 players, or sometimes fewer, most boys playing the entire game - offense and defense- does a great disservice to these young athletes. Fielding a championship team in these tiny schools is rare, so to have a team out in one or two playoff games is beyond disappointing. Case in point: in early October, Poly 47, Brentwood 26.
Poly had little or no chance in their game against Riverside Notre Dame, a much bigger school, and they weren't even the best team in the playoffs; Notre Dame got crushed in the semi-finals last night by SanJacinto.
One can only wonder what our beloved Prep League teams have in store for them against these teams in the future. If Poly and Rio and Prep dominate Division 13, so be it; at least they're playing similar teams from similar schools. Wake up CIF!

It is good to see that LS fans (Traxbac) can be as classless, clueless, ignorant and gramatically challenged as TC (TC Princess, TC 2,000 yards and counting, anonymous)and Monrovia (][V]- TOWN])fans. Let me tell you, I'm not a La Salle or Maranatha fan but I was at the La Salle game. I wanted to see if the team TC lost to was as good as advertised lately. They are.
Baier and Bury are some kind of runners and those guys upfront offensively and defensively get the job done. Against a FAST Duarte or Verbum Dei team I don't know what the Lancers could do but I'm eager to find out and I am rooting for them(LS).

As far as Coach of the Year. Murphy has done a fabulous job at Maranatha but I'd be more inclined to go with Gallagher. He had to rally his team from an 0-5 hole. That shows a lot of character as a team and as a coaching staff. The thing about Gallagher is though he wouldn't tell you he deserves it...that's just how much characther HE has.

Truly an dream come true night for the Minutemen! - What a thrill for the kids and Murphy (and his great staff )to be playing in the championship next week. To see our students storm the field after the victory - cheerleaders crying with joy - parents back-slapping and hugging with so much pride in the kids - and Coach Murphy giving a speech that brought many to tears - it was an incredible night. What a play by Colin Jones! - He was there when we needed him in a big way - a major play that turned things around - and great effort by the D-line, the O-line, Mark Love, Robert Sharpe, Julian Boyd - the list goes on - Vanderlaan and Flewelling - the bash brothers - getting it done - and of course - Kyle Delahooke consistently great! And then Colin Jones (as PasadenaNative mentioned) had the play of the day recovering a game-changing fumble and taking it back to the 4 yardline.

I'll be honest Maranatha fan, I didn't think you had two comebacks in you. And yet you owned the fourth quarter again, 14-0. Nice of coach Murphy to call me out in front of the all the fans after the game. But that's all in good fun and I guess that's what I get for being a doubter.

Congrats to the team and fans on a great victory. You guys are truly classy and deserving. However, I will refrain from calling Maranatha a Cinderella story because this win was no fluke.

Anonymous: I’m just an emotional wreck right now. The game was full of ups and downs it’s hard to remember details. We’ll let the Campa report that. We were up 10 to 7 with just a few clicks left in the 2nd quarter and Brentwood scored a touchdown on a great trick play. Pitch for the QB to a back and a pass for the score. We went into the 3rd down 14 to 10 and Brentwood scored another touchdown with the extra point failing. With the 3rd quarter closing out we recovered a fumble around the 10 yard mark and then the game turned around. Man we had so many chances to break it open. Delahooke had great kick offs and punts. I remember 3 that they called for a fair catch and fumbled and we couldn’t recover any of them. Our defense kept us in this game. The offense was shaky and our soph QB had some poor pass attempts but it all worked out.
Man we’re going to the championship game. Doesn’t get better then that

Big Pass Saxon predicted a La Salle 24-14 victory at 6:20 p.m.
Just call him the Big Predictor. I haven't hit a bulls-eye all year.

No doubt, Coach Murphy should be named as COACH OF THE YEAR for the incredible comebacks and his methodical execution. This Coach seems to keep forging ahead and giving his team that belief system that they CAN do it. There was one consistent name and one hero on the field for the Minutemen tonight--COLIN JONES. Better add him to your Defense Players list for the Top Area Players and finally give this kid his props!!! While Julian Boyd and Mark Love also added to the mix of heroism, Jones seemed to be the one that stands out. Let's hope PSN gets it right as this finally needs his recognition.

i just wish my predictions for our games would have turned out the same way...although i did say i thought we'd beat Alhambra 35-28 (it was 39-28)

From what I have seen of both teams this year, Brentwood should beat Maranantha easily. Mind you I said, should. Without their QB (can't remember his name at the moment) the Minutemen will have a difficult time on O. Brentwood's question mark is their D. I have not seen any of their games since we (Poly) torched them for 41 points in the first half. If Brentwood's D shows up as they did earlier on in the season they will win.

Maranatha by 3 once again. Hey Campa, you forgot about Julian Boyd. He's pretty fast and made many of the the tackles on Whittier Christian's Camarillo. By the way the second half, we shut them down offensively. In the same game, Alex struggled getting the ball to open receivers, which he's done in the past. It's not easy having underclassmen as QBs (except for a guy like Clausen), both the Maranatha QBs can throw and get the ball to people.
