UNDERDOGS ONE MORE TIME?

SATURDAY'S CHAMPIONSHIPS
MId-Valley Division
Verbum Dei (10-3) vs. La Salle (8-5) at Centennial High School, 7:30 p.m.
Thoughts from Monday's CIF luncheon in Long Beach: Interesting, La Salle was the first to walk in the building, and Verbum Dei walked in just as the food arrived. Maybe I shouldn't of been that surprised. I heard the lights at Centennial HS for the Verbum Dei- Duarte semifnal on Saturday came on about a half hour before the game. Hope they have that straightened out on Saturday. I tried my best to bait Verbum Dei coach coach Kenndric Knox, and provide some bulletin-board material for our hometown boys. But he wasn't buying it. After asking if he was looking for a little payback, he asked, "Where did you say you were from?" After reminding him I'm from the Star-News, he went on and on about how great Gallagher is, and how they should be considered the underdogs. I said coach, "You've been blowing everyone out in the playoffs, including some of our local teams." He said, "Yeah, but they beat us and they're the Camino Real League champs." For the record, nobody around our office thinks La Salle has a chance. One of our staffers, Sean Moses, covered the Verbum Dei game against Duarte and said the Eagles' speed overwhelmed Duarte. My hats off to La Salle. Despite those who think otherwise, Verbum Dei had all their players when the Lancers beat them the first time. Some were just coming back from injury, but they were all there.
Northeast Division
St. Margaret's (13-0) vs. Maranatha (11-2) at PCC, 7:30 p.m.
Thoughts from Monday's CIF luncheon in Long Beach: I'm liking coach Joel Murphy more and more. the Minutemen are sitting at a table just in front of Oaks Christian when Murphy looks over at Oaks Christian quarterback Jimmy Clausen while we're doing our interview. He fist-pumps the Notre Dame bound quarterback, then shouts out, "Go Notre Dame." The Minutemen boys came neatly dressed with their trademark blue-and-red striped school ties. They seemed to be enjoying the atmosphere as much as anyone, and are looking forward to taking on the division's undefeated and top-ranked team. Believe it or not, I don't think the Minutemen are such huge underdogs. St. Margaret's has only one player listed over 200 pounds. The only danger is they seem to be a lot like Rio Hondo Prep. Quick and disciplined, and we all know what happened in that game.
FINALLY: For Saturday's championshinps, we will have a photographer at both games and will provide photo galleries from kickoff until the final whistle. Also, we will have video highlights on Saturday morning of the Maranatha-St. Margaret's championship.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to your Touch, but just after seeing how slim and surpr isingly small and gentle it is, I contemplate it to become a relatively exclusive hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch as well as Nano. It can be extremely colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels fairly a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as a lot, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, when becoming just a hair thicker.

Count me as a further man or woman surpr ised which you did notinclude pepsi around the ??worst??? l ist as well as acknowledge their redesign.Other certain comments. The new Pfizer logo looks sloppy and careless to me. The blue clearspace all-around the wordmark is uneven. I just like the notion, however the execution is lousy. The aged one particular is tighter.I do notunderstand what you like greater in regards to the new Guitar Hero logo. The detrimental space in between the letters helps make it just about unattainable to go through for me.As for El Banco Deuno, I do notget it by any means. The line breaks seem absolutely jarring to me and remind me of a logo I did for my s ister is line of crafts when I was about 15 (it was the phrase pollywogs??? on two lines, with a hyphen?- ugh).Eventually, I would adore to discover your l ist of Identities that happen to be in desperate require of a redesign. The query is typically asked who it was that in the Beatle with the most talent. I would say it absolutely was the amazing blend of all four Beatles, the music has created it so one of a kind. Exclusively, naturally, was the romantic relationship in between the two lyricists and composers, Lennon and McCartney. But John Lennon had developed also wonderful solo songs, possibly he was the finest solo artist on the four Beatles.

The death of Kurt does however hurt so very much and his songs is nonetheless modern. He could have written so many fantastic melodies, if he had not been ill. That business plan was my exact thought 11 years ago. In-N-Out is one of the closest held private companies of all time. They continually turn down offers from the big private equity firms.

For now, I will have to settle for my usual routine: Arrive at the airport, go to In-N-Out with my brothers, pop in the old highlight films until the wee hours...! Gotta love family traditions!

That's a deal. Except, I already have a pretty good idea of what your plan is for M-Town. Heck, I was virtually calling every play you ran this past season. Sometimes, it takes a lot more than knowing where the ball is going and who is getting it in order to be effective. You already know that, though. You've gone against Bloomington.

I'd rather make a different trade: I'll send the dogs, coffee and maybe even a few slices of Coronet's, and you send me some Double-Doubles with grilled onions.

P finchamp,
I agree that Poly is the small school champ this year (I think they would have taken care of Rio again if they played) but I only saw Rio play once and that was against Poly - so I may not have a clear view. It will be a while before Poly can say they are the small school champs again. I don't know how much the Poly kids will actually play in the Ivies - that league has gotten very competitive over the last several years with kids from the major HS divisions - last year they got an ALL CIF LB (also all CIF guard in basketball) from Mission V - 6-3+, 215+ lbs for example.

New York said:

It's a lot more competitive than some may think.

p finchamp said:

orangeandblue--
I gather you are not disagreeing with my post that Poly can lay claim to small school champ but with the comment that RHP would like another shot at them...we'll never know. Keep in mind that the Poly group had never beaten Rio at any level and we know they didn't morph over a year's time into he-men. They simply outplayed Rio and Rio came in with the wrong mind-set for that game...

Yes Poly does look thin for a while, I agree. I wonder how many of the guys will actually play Ivy League football--not suit up, play. Only time will tell.

Orangeandblue said:

P finchamp,
I respectfully disagree with you re: the talent at Poly this year those kids were experience and did play with a lot of heart, but they were extremely talented (wait until you see have many play in the Ivies)you don't shut out Rio and go undefeated in leage and win by their average winning margin by just heart and I belive that they would have won the division one lower easily -unfortunately we will never know - and Poly looks a little thin for a while - but there are sibs coming up in a few years that should get them back up there.

goldenknight said:

I am sure La Salle has many fine fans and I know some of the kids on the team, which is actually why I will be rooting for LS and at the game tonight. It is just very annoying when a coach of Coach Mooney's stature and knowledge, who may have the best insights on this game having played both team and certainly the best HS football insight of anyone on this blog get bashed by some knucklehead LS fans. While most of the of the post here are amusing in their lack of objectivity and other failings - when a coach who actually really cares about HS football in the area takes the time to comment we should not be disrespectful or we won't get meaningful and thoughtful commentary in the future - just nonsense from know nothings. I wish we had a coach who really cared like Mooney at SF (can you imagine what he would do with that talent) or if there is some private school reason he couldn't be there then I would love to see him at LC - he would have won 2 CIF titles there with the talent over the last 2 years.

Dear La Salle brethren, Coach Mooney has a right to his distinguished and illustrious opinion on this blog.
May he be right or may he be wrong, it is worthy commentary none the less. We need to learn from his mistakes. Let not history repeat it self.

I know our Cross Country Coach will be out of town sadly. But, I know he'd love to talk to you, especially since Maranatha is one of the few schools with a Triathlon Club that Coach McCown organizes!

CFI rules dictate that you have to contact him, he is not allowed to recruit.

Bloggers,

In case you were interested, here is Cantwell-Sacred Heart's coach, Pete Smolin, entire take on the Verbum Dei-La Salle game. And for those of you wondering, this is the same Smolin that was running backs coach for PCC legend Jonathan Smith during the Lancers incredible 2001 season.

"Thank you, this is a great honor for me to help by adding some input. Playing both of these teams was a very bitter experience for me. This is our first year in this competitive league and higher division and we did struggle in league. We went 7-3 and lost three league games after going 6-0 (non-league) and defeating two higher division teams. The sting of those losses has diminished slightly since both teams in the Camino Real have reached the finals. I was fortunate to attend their last match up along with many college coaches such as Brendan Carroll (USC) and all the top Mid Valley Division Coaches. I feel that this game will again be very close and completive."

1.) Who do you believe has the upper edge heading into Saturday's game?

"Verb seems to have the upper edge, the revenge factor is huge! They will be hungry, very hungry."

2.) What does La Salle need to do to defeat Verbum Dei?

"La Salle has an awesome Line (both sides of the ball) lead by Alex Jimenez and Thomas Quigley, They need to do what they do best, pound the ball with their stud Nathan Bury behind that explosive line."

3.) what does Verbum Dei have to do to defeat La Salle?

"Verb has so many weapons on offense and ferocious team speed on defense. Since they do seem healthier as of late and have been more consistent on offense (eliminating mistakes and producing longer scoring drives) their talented defense will need to dig in and take on and shut down the bulldozer like ground attack of La Salle."

4.) What is your ex-factor for this game?

"The ex-factor is the play of La Salle's passing attack if the line can give their QB Matt Kohorst time to get the ball out to their receivers such as Riley Rettig and the backs David Baier/Nathan Bury in the flats in their play-action package. They can keep the Verb defense off balance. On the other hand La Salle's DB's will have to keep Verb from making the big plays."

5.) How can Verbum Dei slow down or stop La Salle's running back combo of David Baier/Nathan Bury? How can La Salle slow down or stop Verbum Dei's Curtis Wilson?

"Verb will load the Box with an 8-man front and force La Salle to throw. La Salle will have their hands full in stopping QB Wilson especially in the red zone when verb goes into their empty shotgun formation. Wilson is deadly when he smells pay dirt."

6.) How do you rank both squads amongst some of the talent your team has played this season?

"These are the two best teams we have played this season! Obviously, they are good, they both made it to the finals. Verb is loaded with talent, and La Salle is a tough smash mouth program that plays almost error free. Both are extremely well coached and have bounced back from adversity earlier in the season."

7.) What is your prediction for the game and a winner?

"It will be close; La Salle did have a home field advantage playing in the heat of a Saturday afternoon on their blistering hot turf field. This week the home field advantage favors Verb greatly. This may be the closest, most evenly matched championship game out of all of them this year. In that case, I might go with Verb, because it is hard for teams to lose twice to each other.

"However, I will definitely be there to see for myself. I honestly do not know who will win this one. That is the fun of it, playoffs are hard. Either you go home with a loss and your last High School game most likely the last game you will ever play, if you are a senior or you win a CIF Championship! I am grateful that both teams are senior loaded and I am sure all of the seniors will battle until their last breath for that ring."

I believe that La Salle will hang in there, but lose to a good VD team. LS having such a good o-line, I don't seem them losing by much. VD is like monrovia in many ways, well the old monrovia before rio hondo league play.

Coach Mooney, great analysis of our upcoming game against Verb. I agree that there will not be an intimidation factor. Are you going to make the trip to Compton Centennial Sat. night? Since you have so much time on your hands:) I am just confused by one item that you,and others mentioned. La Salle had an advantage playing Saturday day games, and also Friday night games, so just when are they supposed to play? (Sunday mornings are out).

to me that long analysis sounds like alot of jealousy from a coach who's team got railroaded by both la salle and verbum dei. if you had the game plan so dialed in against verb and la salle why did they run right through the TC Lambs. Gallagher had his team prepared last time they played and will have them prepared this time. La Salle will roll tomorrow and as much as i dont want to say it, maranantha will roll and two champions will be in town.

Mike Mooney-Head Coach TCHS said:

Due to space constraints (Campa/Fred-was it fear of my journalistic prowess perhaps??!!) much of my analysis of the game was cut. Here is the obnoxiously long full write up! What do you think football junkies?
1.) Who do you believe has the upper edge heading into Saturday's game?
Verbum Dei for 3 reasons location, scheme, and talent.
Location-La Salle will not be intimidated, we were not, and neither was Duarte. I think it is because they will not be able to create the awesome home field advantage I saw versus Bishop Diego. I think the new setting at La Salle has been a major factor in their recent success. Game 1 was played on a brutal afternoon at La Salle and Verb was clearly out of shape. La Salle was far better prepared for that atmosphere and capitalized on superior conditioning to finish the game.
Scheme-Verbum Dei is very tough to defend. They can spread you out and create natural seams or they can go big and bring it down hill at you. The QB is very tough to defend when the play breaks down. Defensively, in the first game, Verb played an even front with Ayers as a down tackle outside. La Salle killed them with quick hitters and counters to the natural bubbles. Verb now plays an odd front, covering all offensive linemen, eliminating that area of attack. They have moved Ayers to LB and he is protected by the scheme to roam and make plays. Their secondary, while not superb coverage guys, has tremendous recovery speed. There is very little margin for error when placing the ball to a WR.
Talent-La Salle has terrific frontline players. That said Verb has a deeper roster man to man. More kids with size, speed, and play making ability and they are playing excellent team football.

2.) What does La Salle need to do to defeat Verbum Dei?
Execute a flawless game plan offensively and defensively.
Offensively, You must possess the ball on offense and score. We moved the ball consistently but blew 4 scoring opportunities with 3 turnovers and getting stuffed at the goaline just before the half. If you can move the chains and score, you will keep their offense off the field and perhaps take them out of their comfort zone and influence their play calling.
Defensively, you have to be able to make them earn their points. They rushed for more than 400 yards against us and it was big plays that did it. The QB’s feet are really tough to defend when the play breaks down. Your normal pursuit angles must adjust to their speed in space. Quick scores against your defense will negate your offensive game plan. They live and die on the big play. Don’t give it up and you can possibly force them into mistakes.

3.) What does Verbum Dei have to do to defeat La Salle?
Offensively, keep on keeping on. They kill you with size, speed, and mismatches. Defensively, They must find Baer on every play. He is one kid on La Salle who can really scoot and they do a great job of finding ways to get him the ball in space. He really hurt them in game 1. Keep the pressure on Kohorst. Give him time and he’ll kill you with his efficiency.

4.) What is your ex-factor for this game?
Mistakes and Destiny. Outside of a complete meltdown by Verb, I don’t see it happening for La Salle. That being said, La Salle has done a superb job of making people pay for mistakes during the win streak. Maybe fate has a Lancer heart this year.

5.) How can Verbum Dei slow down or stop La Salle's running back combo of David Baier/Nathan Bury?
Control the line of scrimmage and allow the LB’s to scrape and make plays. Don’t fall asleep on boots and play action allowing them to slip into the flat.

5a.) How can La Salle slow down or stop Verbum Dei's Curtis Wilson?
Keep if off the field with a flawless offensive game plan. Get off blocks and pursue. Verb does a great job of engaging defenders and holding blocks, allowing the RB’s to get into space. Pursuit angles must be adjusted on the fly. It’s impossible to simulate their team speed in practice.

6.) How do rank both squads amongst some of the talent your team has played this season?
Verb is the most physical, most talented team we played all year. All of the teams we played this year, La Salle included, had several standout players. Nobody had as many gifted and talented players as Verb.

7.) What is your prediction for the game and a winner?
As much as I’d like to see a local school win it, I just can’t rationally pick La Salle based on what I know about both schools and my study of them this entire year. We haven’t been blown out by too many people, and those that have been able to it too us, usually wind up winning a CIF Championship. I hope I’m wrong La Salle, but if Verbum Dei plays to potential…42-14 Verb

I think that Verbum Dei is the best team in the division regardless if la salle beat them early in the regular season. I mean we beat la salle in the regular season and look what happened. So I am rooting for Verbum Dei, I think they are faster and more athletic then la salle. All of you say About how #70 is gonna destroy everyone, But how can you destroy what you cant catch???? Fred, Maranatha & LaSalle fans

I do know how you feel, the pregame anticipation coupled with the anxiety. It has been 363 days since Rio Hondo Prep took the D-XIII championship last year. Our guys (and us parents and fans) are in our last days of savoring that feat. Fred honored our team by putting their picture on the blog holding the plaque in the air. The year that has followed for RH Prep has been one that EVERY athlete cherishes to have in their life. New history will be forged on Saturday and now La Salle and Maranatha have their chance to etch Champions after their name.

It has been and continues to be a great ride in football at RHP and, fret not, we know we retire from D-XIII as Champions. As the saying goes "preparation and opportunity meet at the point of expectation." As a parent it is a bittersweet moment--hanging on to every last minute as reigning Champions while knowing the path ahead in D-XII must be forged anew.

May this be the best game your team plays all year. And why not? The guys have been working together for more than 100 consecutive days. Chances of it all working right have gotten stronger for both teams. Wish I could go to both games but I'll be stopping by Hill and Del Mar for those burgers and a D-XIII Championship game.

I couldn't imagine how awesome a Mid-Valley division would be with the Pacific League, Rio Hondo, and Camino Real. Wouldn't that be exciting? Just an idea but probably 70% of those teams in those leagues are in the SGV. That would be pretty cool to me. An Arcadia vs. La Salle match-up. Muir vs. Monrovia. Burroughs against Temple City. Burbank against La Canada. Just throwing teams out there. Just an idea as well.

ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER STORY ON ST. MARGARET'S
Tartans finally take next step
St. Margaret's downs Whittier Christian, 35-21, to reach a CIF-SS 11-man final.

By STEVE FRYER
DANA POINT – After two years of trying, St. Margaret's finally trimmed the "semi" off of semifinals.

St. Margaret's defeated Whittier Christian, 35-21, Saturday in a CIF-Southern Section Northeast Division semifinal playoff football game at Dana Hills High to put the Tartans in a section 11-man football final for the first time.

The Tartans, 13-0 and the only undefeated team in Orange County, will play Maranatha of Pasadena (11-2) in the Northeast Division championship game Saturday. Maranatha will be the home team. The site of the game will be announced by Tuesday.

St. Margaret's advanced to the semifinals the past two seasons, but lost both times in the Division XIII semis. The Tartans got to the finals in 8-man football in 1987, when they lost to Coastal Christian of Arroyo Grande.

The Tartans busted down the door to the finals thanks to a strong running attack led by Michael Duenes and Hunter Steffien, and enough big-gain completions to keep the Whittier Christian defense honest.

"We couldn't just ram it down their throats," Duenes said.

Quarterback Cameron Hiller completed only six passes, but all of them accounted either for touchdowns or first downs for the Tartans.

Duenes rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown. Steffien rushed for 66 yards and two touchdowns.

And the Tartans kept a handle on Whittier Christian running back Esteban Camarillo, Orange County's leading rusher going into this week. Camarillo rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns, but his production was about 50 percent of the usual. He went into these semifinals averaging 226 yards and three touchdowns a game.

"I thought we did a good job with him," first-year St. Margaret's coach Jason Hitchens said. "We did a little bend-but-don't-break action there."

St. Margaret's started breaking down Whittier Christian early. The Tartans' Kevin Yamada recovered a Whittier Christian fumble on the second play from scrimmage, putting St. Margaret's on the Heralds' 13-yard line. Three plays later, Hiller passed to Dorian Farhang for a 13-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead just 2:14 into the game.

The Heralds tied it on a 1-yard run by Camarillo, but the Tartans reclaimed the lead for good on a 2-yard touchdown run by Duenes with 3:33 to go in the first quarter.

St. Margaret's pushed its lead to 21-7 in the second quarter on a 34-yard touchdown run by Steffien. Whittier Christian responded again with a 25-yard touchdown run by Camarillo.

The Tartans made it 28-14 on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Hiller to Garrett Brown.

I also heard mentioned that the Pacific was headed to the Northern Division, but it was a last minute change to the Central?

Yes, the Frontier bandwagon crashed somewhere around Sierra Madre Blvd., but wait until next year!(After the Burbank schools are once again eliminated in the first round if they get there-I'll be rolling with the Frontier League)

Lancer D,
Ah...the knock was against St Francis and specifically Who Cares but just like the bulk of La Salle Fans on this board with the huge on the chip on their shoulder - because La Salle isn't even close to St Francis in academics (which may be the reason why you are so touchy about the JC remark) nor Sports (let alone Prep in Academics)- that somehow everything is a knock against La Salle - that is the height of arrogance. If you took a poll as to which school has the most arrogant and obnoxious fans hands down it would be La Salle - just read the posts on this board - stick to you own fights SF doesn't your help - I'll be glad when you guys go back to your usually 5-5 - woops that was this season.

hey Prepman,

Much better people than you or who you will ever be have gone through community college. If you have somethign to say about Saint Francis say it, don't just talk about how much better you are, excuse me, how much better you think you are. While you may not be as hard to get into as Poly it may please you to know that Prep is second to none in two areas; pomposity and arrogance.

Go Lancers!

Have you lost your mind - Flintridge Prep is the second best academic school in the SGV next to -and I hate to say this -Poly - there are few who goes SF who could get into Flintridge Prep. Just look at the ERB test scores to get into Prep as compared to SF. Just look at the colleges that Prep kids get into compared to SF - not even close. Yes the SF football team could beat the Prep team - congratulations. See you at PCC woops make that Glendale College brainiac.

La Salle is tops and it deserves all the coverage because they are consistent. Maranatha who? Can't even pronounce that and don't know where it's at. Haw about that. No pics in the paper because... oh let me guess, who we talking about again... oh yeah, the minutemen... that's all you get one minute, men... Cry babys..pay your dues and you'll get in the paper. I still have got that guys helmet impression in both my ears... and thats from practice. If your not impressed with watching him, what do you think of the backs that pile up yards from running behind him. I doubt David Baier and Nate Bury feel he plays without drive, and they would know best.

I say what I say because #70 is close to me and I will continue to promote his stock on this blog. Anyone that saw the Bishop Diego game and was not looking through a Bag of Dirt, saw him blow up every LB on the Bishop side, including their stud #53. All night long he had to be double teamed on the D, which opened the way for other guys to step up.

I hope I don’t offend anyone but whether Fred or Campa reports the game Sat night, it doesn’t matter, whether we get a Star News photographer or not, it doesn’t matter, whether La Salle gets top billing or not, it doesn’t matter. Whether Coach Murphy is Coach of the Year, it doesn’t matter. I do think he deserves it and have posted my support.
What matters is that we have coming up the biggest game in Maranatha’s history. What matters is that Coach Murphy instills the winning attitude that the team has had over the playoffs. What matters is that the coaching staff and players who went to scout the Whittier Christian v St Margaret’s game learned all they could about the team we’re about to play. What matters is that we pack the stands at PCC and show our support to a team that has had such a great season and has made us all so proud to be a small part of it.
What matters is that the players are healthy and able to play. What matters is that we bring a CIF championship to our “Jewel of the Valley? and that all the players, coaches, students and fans can relish in that victory.

The Star News should balance their coverage and send a photographer to a Maranatha practice (this is only Tuesday--there is plenty of time)to take some candids. I'm sure if they called ahead the guys could suit up.

There is no excuse for them not to run any photos of Maranatha.

The best,
Im sorry Im from monrovia and la salle didnt get lucky against us two weeks ago. I mean they have an underated offensive line that I wittnessed for myself. And then for some strange reason we couldnt figure out how to cover and running back in the flats. Because thats all they did in the sencond half and for some reason we couldnt cover that area. Lucky....no la salle exploited our weakness and didnt stop until the game was over. We also had no run defense when we needed it the most, which was on third down. Now that being said do I think they'll get "lucky" against Verbum dei. No way that we will happen. They knocked off a good temple city team, and they beat the same team that shut down supposedly the best back in the division Peterson which is Duarte. So do I want a local team to win it all, really I can care less. I want the best team to win it all, and right now thats seems to be Verbum Dei no question about it.

Fellow Lancers, it's pointless to debate the merits of which team is better. This is 2006. Live in the present and give the 2006 team the support they deserve. Should this team prevail and become CIF champs, the scoreboard says they are the best. They will have the plaque, the ring and their place in the records book. Ten years from now that's what everyone will see.

From what Im hearing about Verbum Dei and how they've been blowing out almost every opponent in the last few weeks. And for Mooney to say they felt like they lost to the future champions. I have to say it looks like la salle is going to have the same ending like that movie friday night lights. They make it a game but from what i've been reading Verbum Dei is the fastest team in the division. I think they'll be too much for la salle to handle. It wont be a blowout but mid-way through the 4th the eagles are gonna be the champs

Posted today on the LA Times under Playoff Notebook in latimes.com, from interview yestrday by Eric Sondheimer:
Pasadena La Salle has one of the Southland's most underrated two-way standouts in offensive tackle and defensive end Alex Jimenez, who has 10 sacks going into his team's Mid-Valley Division championship game Saturday against Los Angeles Verbum Dei at Compton Centennial.

Jimenez, 6-3 and 245 pounds, could end up blocking Verbum Dei's UCLA-bound defensive end Akeem Ayers.

"He's pretty good," Jimenez said. "It's nice to compete against him."

These two teams met this season, with La Salle winning, 36-35.

The '95 La Salle was a no nonsense team that would smack you in the teeth. Lacanzo went on to play at Cal Lutheran FB/SS. Ingrao started for the west in the all-star game among other great players in the SGV. They were legit and were ranked no.1 or 2 in CIF, but was upset by a team that picked on the height of their secondary with taller receivers in the 2nd half.
But, the 2006 lancer squad has proven it with their wins...I think DiFori was a huge help.

NY, La Salle is just like the Pats, no super stars, no egos. They believe on one another and push each other to do their best. They have all drank the Kool Aid.
There are more athletic teams in the division, with more talent at the skill positions, such as your beloved Monrovia and what can one say about Verb! This team has a no nonsense approach, they have seen and overcome adversity and have an inner drive to excel. That they also have one of the best coaching staff in the Valley, goes with out saying. This is the true edge La Salle brings. Gallagher, DiFiori and Peterson they are high caliber, intelligent, dedicated. There are some great head coaches in this area as we have discussed in other threads, but not enough can be said about the Hydra that the Lancer Coaching Staff is.
Thanks for the vote of confidence, outside of us few Lancer Faithful there are few that believe we can beat Verb again.

New York said:

The '95 team was tougher, but the '06 team (now) is a proven winner.

Teams around the valley are much softer than they were in the mid and late '90's anyway.

trkcoach53 said:

I would say the '95 team had more talent but the '06 team is better coached. ...and being a coach I believe that coaching can make all the difference in the world.

When comparing teams from different eras it's difficult to say that because this team reached the championship game this it's best because then you have to get into the strength of the opponents that the '95 team played vs. '06. Time marches on. Is the '06 team having the best season in LS history, yes it is! With that being said, we should wait a year or so before comparing teams and all the information should be disseminated to those making the rating. Might be a good article for the Lancer Magazine.

La Salle has had two home games and one road game in the playoffs. Verb has had the same. Verb won the coin toss, and gets to be the home team at a neutral site approved by the CIF. I went to the Verb Duarte game. Verb does not have any advantage playing at Compton. The team that plays better football will be the Champion.

Top 5 LS Squads

1. 2006- The OL and DL plus the coaching staff puts this team ahead of all the other ones. Not to mention their attitude and perserverance. This is just a great team that has "bought in".
2. 1995- You can't argue with this... Ralph Lazcano (All-CIF), Ryan Garcia (All-CIF, all time leader in Rush Yards), Travis Ingrao (All-CIF), Ruben Vasquez (2nd Team All-CIF), David Taylor (All-CIF, future Santa Fe League MVP), Danny Sheridan (All-CIF). I think I can go on. This team wasn't the most well coached but they liked to hit. None of the D's I've seen in the past two years could have stopped this team's Single Wing Attack. If they played the 06 squad they lose 31-28. They beat the 05 squad 35-21.

3. 1998- Another corps. of All-CIF players on this team. David Taylor ran over everybody this year. Unfortunately their long snapper got hurt before the playoffs and they ended up spotting Banning 3 touchdowns on bad snaps during punts in their quarterfinal game.

2005- A good team that missed some of the cohesiveness that 06 squad has. Colton was a great athlete, certainly more athletic than Kohorst. However, I think the 05 offense would have been more effective with Kohorst. Colton made great plays with his legs, but the O relied to0 much upon this and it led to Colton having happy feet in the pocket. I think their ineffective output against Verb highlighted this. They put up a Valiant fight against OC in the quarters but were overmatched in every facet.

1996- The Ryan Garcia show. He once had 230 yards in a single quarter on night, a night when the LS Single Wing dropped 79 on St. Gen's. This team also had Taylor, Sheridan, (and four others who started on Varsity from 95-97). A decent D and an unstoppable run attack. Lost their playoff opener to Bishop Union. Unfortunately for these early "successful" LS teams, just making the playoffs was an accomplishment. I'm glad the attitude has changed.

GoldenBear said:

2004-2005 squads (the first under gallagher) were better in skills, but probably didn't have the cohesiveness of this squad (there were certain ego problems). That being said, had we been in the same division of this year's team, we would have done much better, Baier and Burry are good, but they certaintly haven't the well rounded capabilities of Chris Lara, Dexter Bryant. Kohorst has great vision, and can take a hit, but he is not even close to the speed or agility of George Colton.
Defensively, I'd say this year's team has one of the best in school history; a perfect storm of good linemen, leadership with Saldana, and the genius of Peterson.
On the Lines, this year's squad is quite different than last year's, Certaintly guys like Ian Hoffman, Danny Iglesias, Fred Weideman (of the 2004 squad) were all around great and, I think, can't compare in talent(with the exception of AJ. This year's line comes up with a bunch of returners in Bill Preston ( who started last year, albeit at times flimsily, as a sophmore and has come to greatly improve, and grow in maturity level. Casey Hilland improved greatly and has become a beast (I'm glad my replacement has exceded all expectations). Also don't count out Tommy Q., he's been a powerhouse for 3 years now.
That being said I think a great addition has been made this year on the offensive coaching staff (Difiori), and a great divisional restructuring that gives the Lancers better competition and a local flavor that seems to bring out the best in them.
I still think our team was better, but you can't take anything away from these guys.

Go Lancers, Beat the Eagles!

LS said:

Easy, the 2006 team because of how far they have gone, and of the teams that they have beaten. They have beaten the #1, #2, and already now the new #1 team in Verb.

New York said:

Crazy,

It's the Patriots vs. Rams all over again. (Or is it the other way around, Dominguez vs. CO Notre Dame last year? I don't think so.) As I said before, I think La Salle will frustrate Verb and slow them down. La Salle has beaten the best in the division already and will do it again.

Hey Fred:
Here’s my take on the biggest game in Maranatha’s sports history. On paper these two teams look very even. Yes, St. Margaret’s has an undefeated season which shows they’ve played some great ball this season. Cal Preps has them rated at 11.8 and Maranatha at 5.0. Looks like some of the difference was in preseason play.
They did beat Whittier Christian but when we played them it was not at our best. Man has this team grown during the playoffs. Check out MaxPreps and the stats are very even. The stats are almost identical, Yards rushing and passing, defense and points scored.
This is going to be a great battle Sat night and I can’t wait for the game to begin.
If we play like we did against Salesian and Brentwood, St Margaret’s is going to have a tough time Saturday night at our home field.
To all the Maranatha faithful and those who are jumping on the bandwagon now, we need to pack the stands and show our support and rally our team to victory.
