Rosemead assistant coach fired

| | Comments (18) |

Rosemead football coach Matt Koffler confirmed that defensive coordinator Anthony White has been fired. Koffler said the team is looking to go in another direction. White becomes the second high profile Mission Valley League assistant coach to be fired this off-season. South El Monte assistant Jerry (Gerry?) Urias was fired prior to Christmas break.
White played running back and defensive back at Rosemead and won the high school Heisman Trophy in 1999. He then played for Urban Meyer at Utah before returning to the SGV to start a career as a coach. He led Rosemead's freshman team to the Mission Valley League title in 2004, but received some disdain around the league for allegedly running up scores.
White left after that season to be an assistant coach under Wilson's Robert Oviedo in 2005. He was back at Rosemead this past season after the Panthers lost four assistant coaches during the 2006 off-season. Rosemead's defense had to replace 10 starters going into the season, but still managed to finish in a three-way tie with Arroyo and South El Monte for the MVL title.

Mr. Aram Tolegian chased this down, anyone know of any other assistants shuffling around?

Posthuma doing it all

http://lang.sgvtribune.com/multimedia/asps/012407_Posthuma.asp
I've been at the Star-News five years, and Nick Posthuma is as talented a forward as I have seen. Great first touch, great finisher, and only a junior. To have 21 goals in 22 games against the level of competition he is facing is very, very impressive.
I would encourage everyone to visit St. Francis next Monday night at 5 p.m., when the Knights take on Loyola for what should be for the Mission League title if the Knights take care of business the rest of the week.

Ajere talks about transfer and game with Muir

The Greatest Ever?

| | Comments (67) |

It's a simple question. Who is the greatest West San Gabriel Valley high school football coach in history. I've compiled a top five list, but I'm sure there are others to talk about.
Also wondering, will anyone from today's group of coaches like Mike Mooney, Steve Garrison, JIm Bonds and Ken Drain ever be remembered alongside these great coaches when their coaching days are long gone?

1. Bob Hitchcok, Temple City High School
Hitchcock led one of the greatest runs in CIF-SS history. The Rams great led the TCHS' football team to seven CIF championships from 1970 to 1977, including four straight from 1970-73, which included a 46-game undefeated streak. Many Hitchcock players went on to athletic careers in college and the NFL. You could say he's the John Wooden of the WSGV.

2. Jim Brownfield, Muir HIgh School
The legendary Brownfield is still one of the most respected coaches ever, not just because of what he accomplished in football, but what he did as a coach in track too. Brownfield's record at Muir High School as a track and football coach was phenomenal and included 22 Pacific League Championships, six CIF Championships, two State Championships, and 15 Coach of the Year titles including two at the National level. His win-loss record at Muir High School in the 1980-1990s was an incredible 191 wins, only 14 losses, and 1 tie. In football, Brownfield led the Mustangs to CIF championships in 1985 and '86, which are two teams that many consider the best ever.

3. Ray Solari, South Pasadena
The Tigers coach from 1953-72 had quite a run, and one of the best of his generation. He led the Tigers to their first CIF championship game in 1955, and then led the Tigers to three memorable CIF championships in 1962,
'66 and '69.

4. Jack Friedman, St. Francis
The greatest Golden Knight had two stints as head coach, from 1953-65 and again from 1968-78. He put Knights football on the map, leading them to a 29-game winning streak and two consecutive CIF championships in 1963 & '64.

5. Bill Maloney, San Marino
As the head coach from 1983-96, Maloney's Titans compiled an oustanding 104-47-4 record, which included a 1988 CIF championship. Maloney returned to San Marino in 1997 to serve as defensive coordinator under then coach Mike Mooney, and returned again in 2001 and '02 to serve as defensive coordinator before being named head coach one final time in 2003. He'll go down as one of the greatest defensive coach in WSGV history.

BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: Mills faces misdemeanor charges after being placed on leave.

| | Comments (76) |

Coach charged with crime
City says Mills allowed fight

By Kenneth Todd Ruiz and Mary Frances Gurton Staff Writers
PASADENA - The City Prosecutor's office filed charges Wednesday against a Pasadena High School football coach accused of allowing a fight to occur between two students last month.

Misdemeanor charges were filed against head coach Kevin Mills two days after he was placed on paid leave by the Pasadena Unified School District for allegedly permitting his nephew Michael Harrison, a PHS football player, to get into a fight with a student from rival Muir High School in the PHS gym.

The two students had gotten into an altercation, after which Mills "took the kids and allowed them to fight each other in his presence," said Cmdr. John Perez of the Pasadena Police Department.

Mills is charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, officials said.

"The kids had some minor scrapes and bruises," Perez said Thursday. "However, misdemeanor charges were filed against him yesterday."

Mills has referred all questions to his attorney, Pamela Dansby-De Catur.

In a statement released Wednesday night, she said Mills denied the allegations and would cooperate with any investigation.

"Kevin Mills has been a dedicated coach and teacher within the Pasadena Unified School District for over 10 years. He operates with all kids' best interest in mind and is appalled and dismayed that he could be accused of any level of misconduct involving children," the attorney's statement said.

School board member Bill Bibbiani said he believed the district's action against Mills came in response to the incident in the Muir gym.

"I'm aware of allegations that parents have spoken of in response to an incident after the \ football game and apparently some incident before the Christmas break," Bibbiani said.

City prosecutors also are investigating accusations that Harrison's father, also named Michael Harrison, 36, of Pasadena, punched a Muir football player moments after the Mustangs defeated PHS in the

Nov. 9 Turkey Tussle game at the Rose Bowl.

PHS Athletic Director Tony Brooks defended Mills, and said parents often complain about coaches and their methods.

"He knows what he wants from his players, and he holds them responsible and accountable for academics and as citizens on this campus," Brooks said. "Certain philosophies don't always mesh with every parent and student-athlete that come across them."

Brooks, who has coached and taught at the school for 20 years, said he was not present the day of the alleged incident at Muir and was "in the dark" about the investigation.

Parent Janelle Harvey, 33, said she removed her son from PHS because of what she called Mills' abusive training tactics.

She said her son, now enrolled in a nearby private high school, told her Mills allowed student-athletes to fight, among other allegations.

Mills also worked at Washington Elementary, Wilson Middle School and Blair High School prior to coming to PHS in 2005. Besides coaching football, he also teaches mathematics at PHS.

1. Tyron Crockom, Pasadena - Without a doubt the leading contender after throwing for 2,050 yards and 20 touchdowns to earn Star-News second team honors. And with Star-News first team receiver Michael Harrison back, there is no reason to believe the Bulldogs won't be airing it out all next season.
2. Austin Heyworth, St. Francis - The senior-to-be is expected to replace Luke Collis, and at 6-3 and 190 pounds, he has the size and frame you like in a high school quarterback. With super sophomore Dietrich Riley along with Kyle Wong and Kevin Garcia back at receivers, the next QB has all the pieces in place to shine.
3. Alex Clash or Matt Schiltz, Maranatha - Two fine quarterbacks, what a great problem to have. Clash led them early in the season before being injured, then Schiltz led them to a championship game. Coach Joel Murphy will have a tough time deciding between the two, and with RB Mark Love back, this offense should shine.
4. Chase Rettig, (So) or Ryan Doeppel (Sr), La Salle - Whoever replaces Matt Kohorst will probably do fine, because these are two good choices. Okay La Salle bloggers, who will it be?
5. Kevan Walker, Arcadia - Apaches coach Jon Dimalante has said that he is willing to try Walker - a WR/DB - at quaterback for his senior season. He is probably the most talented football player returning in 2007, so there is no reason to believe that with his football IQ (His dad is the def. coordinator at UCLA) he can make the transition.
6. Richard Kilbury, Monrovia - Kilbury will be a junior, and at 6-1 and 170 pounds, will have the tough task of replacing Potts, a three-year varsity starter. In a brief back-up role this season, Kilbury was 5-for-10 for 44 yards.

If only they played ...

If you were the schedule-maker, what area football match-ups would you like to see?
My top five wishes.
1. St. Francis vs. Muir - Now that they're not in the same division, is there any reason why the top private and public schools locally do not play each other anymore? Would there be a better area game than this? I've enjoyed the annual season-kickoff between Arcadia and St. Francis, but a Mustangs-Golden Knights game is more intriguing.
Who would win if they played in the fall: St. Francis
2. La Salle vs. Pasadena - The battle for Sierra Madre Blvd., would be special. Another public vs. private special. The bragging rights would be off the charts. We can't get these two to play a basketball game, but now that La Salle has lights, this is a future no-brainer.
Who would win if they played in the fall: Pasadena
3. Maranatha vs. South Pasadena - Close enough in proximity, and a good test for the Minutemen against an upper-division opponent. I would love to see Maranatha take the La Salle approach, and schedule more of the Rio Hondo League teams. They're not ready for the Monrovia's and Temple City's, but a Minutemen-Tigers matchup would be a good one.
Who woulud win if they played in the fall: Maranatha
4. Rio Hondo Prep vs. Temple City - Maybe it's a blowout, but I would love to see the little guys get a shot. I already think they can play with and beat the Blair's, Keppel's, and even the San Marino's and San Gabriel's of the area. But with the division the Kares are asked to play in, these are the types of games they need. Question is, would someone like Temple City, Alhambra or Rosemead give the little guys a shot?
Who would win if they played in the fall: Temple City
5. Monrovia vs. Alhambra - Obviously a Monrovia-Muir game isn't going to happen anytime soon, but a Wildcats-Moors game would be interesting. Both teams are always in our top ten. They usually play common opponents, but I'd like to see them play each other.
Who would win if they played in the fall: Alhambra
