anonymous fsha hater....who was pumping up fsha here? Did you have a bad experience with the admissions office there?

Anonymous said:

You are stuck in a time capsule my friend. FSHA girls soccer is not the team of yesterday. it is fairly weak, inconsistent and not successful. you can't live on memories forever. so much hype about FSHA all over the news (does the coach own the newspapers?) but they haven't delivered for a long time. Get real. FSHA is going nowhere this year. Belongs somewhere around DV

Boys Soccer LaSalle -Temple City 2-2 tie. LaSallle dominated the majority of the game...had the lead the until the 60th minute or so..
Loyola 1-St Francis 0

JohnM said:

anonymous....I agree about La Salle but they are the only team that has played well consistently. Sacred Heart won't get a rematch against Westridge or get to face La Salle but you can expect them to be gone after the first round of the playoffs.....again! FSHA deserves to have success but they are playing in a division where they don't belong.

Anonymous said:

La Salle soccer extremely over-rated, and maranatha would have no chance competing against teams like FSHA or any other mission league team. If westridge played a re-match against FSHA,they would definately be knocked down.

JohnM said:

FB Realist...you obviously have a different take on the girl's soccer area top ten...post yours.

FredJ said:

FB Realist, why don't you send a complaint to the CIF pollsters too. Most of those voters are voting on teams they've never seen either.
When we started polls in football, we didn't see most teams the first couple weeks of the season, but we ranked them anyway. Sorry, we don't have video highlights at the end of the evening, so we have fun speculating.
BTW, I've seen six of the girls teams play, and three of the boys teams.

Prep FB Realist said:

Hey Fred,

How many teams on your top ten list have you even covered this year? I don't think you and Camps have even seen half of those teams and you have the nerve to come up with rankings? Get real man.

Boys Rio Hondo is not as strong as it historically has been. Remember in the past the team that has dominated this senior age group throughout highschool-South Pasadena. La Canada is going to be a strong opponent as always, as well as Temple City who has key players. I'm looking for a South Pasadena run at the title, especially since they are getting players back from injury, have a new goalie, and are getting back a 3 year starter who didn't play in the preseason.

Fred...I think its safe to say that the private schools are definitely the strength of girl's high school soccer in the West SGV.
The Rio Hondo League competes in CIF Division IV, while the prep league that includes WSGV schools Westridge, Poly, Flintridge Prep and Mayfield is in Division III. La Salle also competes in DIV but at this point looks like the class of the area so far this season and moved up from DV after last season.

My top ten also needs revision:
1 La Salle-the team to beat in the area
2 Maranatha---0-0 tie with San Marino not a good result for Minutemen
3 Arcadia----finally waking up
4 Sacred Heart -underacheiving so far
5 Westrdige---Played well but tied Fprep 2-2
6 Monrovia---lost 4 of last 5
7 Pasadena---reality of league schedule setting in
8 Flintridge Prep---imopressive 2-2 draw with Westridge
9 La Canada---Goalkeeper "keeps" them in every game
10 South Pasadena--- Will challenge for RHL title

Lets update the SF record 16-2

I might have to re-evaluable the girls soccer rankings after Ardcadia's 2-1 victory over Pasadena. The Apaches are 6-4-2 and 2-0-1 in Pacific League play. The record is impressive considering they still compete in the prestigious Mater Dei tournament and play tough nonleague games, something former coach Shelby Greep started during the Apaches' great years.
As for the Bulldogs, some players were out with the flu, and it was just their second loss (7-2), but they're 1-2 in league after previously losing to Crescenta Valley.
------------
La Salle's 2-0 victory over Monrovia continues to show that the privates are clearly passing the top public schools in girls soccer. A few years ago, nobody touched Arcadia, and all the Rio Hondo League teams could compete with anyone. But look, Westridge, La Salle, FSHA, and Maranatha could be the top four programs in the area.

FredJ said:

Loyola-St. Francis on Monday, that should be tight. We'll have someone there to cover it.

gknights said:

5-0 St. Francis over Chaminade. Loyola will be the real test so far as the two league teams we have played so far own a combined 1-11-3 record ... Good luck to everyone

LaSalle Boys 0-0 tie with Cathedral, their biggest challenge in the Del Rey League

bryan said:

hey fred,

the St. Francis Soccer team is now 15-2 with a League game against Chaminade tonight!

JohnM said:

Thanks for the update....LaSalle is definitely playing well.

La Salle 2 Monrovia 0

Monrovia-LaSalle is a very interesting matchup.,,wish I could go see it but I'll be at another game. Please post the score here as soon as you can.

Big game today. La Salle vs Monrovia - girl's soccer. Lancers have only lost 2 games up north vs ranked DI teams. No losses locally. Lets see what happens today. I'd love to see a Westridge vs La Salle match-up just for fun. Lancers would come out on top!!!

The SPHS boys got many players back from injury. If they can keep up there good form as of late, watch out for them to go to playoffs. Mabye even chalenge for the RHL title.

FredJ said:

Bishop Amat-La Salle girls soccer game at 3:15 p.m., look for story in tomorrow's paper. Any other good boys or girls soccer games you would like covered.
Campa is covering PHS-Arcadia girls soccer game on Friday.
I'm covering a hoops game at night, but I might go cover Westridge-Flint Prep game on Friday too.

JohnM said:

Fred....I was critical of Westridge as your pre-season number one but based on what's happened so far they belong on top.....I saw them play both Maranatha and FSHA and both of those games could have gone either way...Westridge plays host to Flintridge Prep Friday....fprep isn't nearly the team it was supposed to be without Ayana Sumiyasu in goal but they could pose a challenge to the Tigers.

GO MIGHTY LANCERS!

Anonymous said:

No one seems to want to talk about the boys... But that's okay its time for the girls to shine..

FredJ said:

Lastly, I'm starting to believe this is a girls soccer town in the winter. Since I've been posting boys and girls basketball and soccer blogs, it seems most of the interest is in girls soccer.
Would you all agree?

FredJ said:

Also John, Maranatha is the real deal. I was talking to their coach today and didn't realize how easy they've been winning games. They haven't given up a goal from the run of play, and only have allowed four goals.
They haven't played the caliber of teams that FSHA, Westridge or some of the others have played, but impressive regardless. I'm going to check them out next week against Whittier Christian in an Alpha League game. Those two figure to be the best in league.

FredJ said:

JohnM, Nice top ten. I'm feeling good about you picking Westridge No. 1. How many people laughed at me when I chose the Tigers at the Star-News' preseason No. 1?

Anonymous said:

well its too bad no one cares about your top 10..and everyone looks at the real top 10 were the "mighty lancers" came out on top..once again wow you really are bitter to there winning streak arent you?

JohnM said:

Fred....not a bad top ten. ...I've seen all of the teams play except the mighty lancers. They won't finish the year there but humoring them with the top ranking might keep the whiners quiet for a while. It will make the excuse fest interesting when they stumble.
My top ten would be as follows:
1 Westrdige Only loss to Chadwick who is better than anyone in this area
2 Maranatha Undefeated record no fluke
3 La Salle Lots of depth….just ask them
4 Sacred Heart Won't go far in D1 but tons of talent
5 Pasadena Best of the big boys
6 Monrovia Looked awesome early…what's up?
7 La Canada Goalkeeper "keeps" them in every game
8 Flintridge Prep Still playing without best keeper in So Cal
9 Arcadia Always a factor
10 South Pasadena Wil challenge for RHL title

Philly B. said:

From the looks of the top ten, It seems as if Monrovia's girls soccer team isnt what it used to be. I really thought they would be ok even losing all that firepower from last season, I guess Im wrong on that. I havent seen them play yet, are they looking any good?

FredJ said:

Sorry about the old photo. If you notice on our prep website, there is no photo gallery. Almost two years worth of galleries were somehow killed out, and our techs are trying to recover it. Like I said in an earlier thread, if anyone is takinng pictures at games, I'd be happy to post them. Just email them to me at fred.robledo@sgvn.com

La Salle Girl's record is 10-2-1. BTW.....that photo is from '05!

FredJ said:

FYI: Covering the La Salle-Bishop Amat girls soccer game on thursday at Amat, 5 p.m. Nice way for the Lancers to open the new Del Rey League.

LaSalle Boys 3-3-4

Anonymous said:

Hey, LaSalle boys did okay in Don Lugo and tied Arcadia 0-0 too!

SP Tiger said:

Boys rio hondo is looking strong. What happened to San Marino and their 8 returning starters?

South Pas does have an impressive record, but remember that they have had several key injuries that have since healed and have added 2 quality players. Although the goalkeeping situation is still up in the air this team looks like a legit contender for sure.
