Boys and girls soccer

Question of the week: If you had to pick one team that had the best chance of winning a boys or girls CIF soccer title, who would it be?
He's got hops: Arcadia's Donnie Capps ,21, goes for the header in the first half as Arcadia beat Pasadena 4-2.

Star-News Boys Soccer top ten rankings
1. St. Francis (21-4)
I don't care if they lose to Loyola ten times, they're still the best around here.
2. Bosco Tech (13-4)
Campa knows this team better than I do, and he loves the Tigers
3. Arcadia (10-5-5)
Impressed they're fighting for league title after losing so many seniors
4. Marshall (10-3-2)
Cruising to Olympic League title. But how will they do in playoffs?
5. La Canada (8-6-2)
Not the La Canada of old, but on the way back regardless
6. San Marino (6-8-5)
Probably has best player in league in Raether
7. Temple City (7-4-6)
Only four losses is impressive
8. Monrovia (7-6-4)
Actually, expected more from Wildcats this season
9. South Pasadena (7-5-5)
Never know what to expect from Tigers
10. La Salle (5-4-7)
Okay, talked to their coach this week, and he assures me they need to be mentioned.

Star-News Girls Soccer top ten rankings

With all their studs performing, they're winning Div. IV. Mark that down.
2. Maranatha (18-0-2)
Everyone's rooting for an undefeated season.
3. Westridge (8-2-5)
Ranking before Mayfield knocked them off, 2-0...Hmmm
4. FSHA (9-6-4)
Tologs know that if they competed in Div. IV or V, they would have a shot at a title.
5. La Canada (10-4-3)
Sources said they dominated Monrovia until allowig game-tying goal in final seconds.
6. Monrovia (8-4-2)
I'm sure Medina disagrees with my sources.

It has taken awhile, but here comes them Tigers.
8. Arcadia (10-6-3)
Better than last year, and rumor is, more young players on way to help future

I believe the La Serna coach (or is it former coach?) is also involved with ranking CIF teams. It is very political. I pity whichever team (La Serna or Granite Hills) that gets to face off against LaSalle.

reporter said:

JohnM, the quote stated that LS should be "ranked" #1 or #2 in the polls, not that LS should be in D1 or D2.

hmmmm said:

wow, you're right. Granite Hill's coach writes the entire DIV section for Socalsoccer.org. THAT'S politics for you! His team probably should not be ranked #2 in DIV.

TripDave said:

I totally agree and am not complaining, polls mean nothing. I was only pointing out a fact in the interest of full disclosure.

JohnM said:

TripDave...let's not carried away. La Salle has an awesome team this year and it probably would be doing very well in D1 or D2…but talent replacement at a relatively small school is difficult and it’s not likely La Salle will recover from the loss of five very talented seniors right away even though there are several talented underclassmen. Enjoy the championship you should win this year and be careful what you wish for in division placement!

TripDave said:

"Not sure why La Salle doesn't move up to #1 or #2. Granite Hills has had a tie in league but they stay at #2, while LS is 7-0 in league. Politics I think."

I don't know if it's politics or simply bias but it is interesting to note that the CIF Division 4 coordinator is also the Granite Hills Varsity Girls coach.

You're not a Division 1 Soccer School!!!
Get over it and find a way to get moved to the right level for your school.
Put your ego aside so the extremely talented players you recruit have a chance to see what the post season feels like!

PS--I'm not a FSHA parent.

Wow, a 7-0 game and the opponent wasn't a "pushover?" Westridge must have really improved since six days ago when it got "pushed over" by a below average Mayfield team. PLEASE!

Real said:

puh-leaze! Alemany is 0-13-1 overall! "No pushover" you said? C'mon, what does it mean when you beat a team like that and when a player scores 5 goals playing this kind of team? Nothing! Be real. Who are you trying to fool anyhow?

Real said:

Anonymous said:

westridge in a non league game beat division I Alemany 7-0! Alemany wasn't a pushover, but the tigers played the best soccer all year, not to mention stand out senior Katie Davis scored 5 goals!!! Fitting since it was senior night!

JohnM said:

reporter...I think there are too many poll voters that haven't seen and don't bother to check the records/schedules of each team before they cast their vote. Add to that the individual bias and laziness that comes into play and you get polls that don't mean much at all.

reporter said:

Will LS ever be #1? How can a team like Maranatha lose a league game and stay at #1. Seems kind of odd. These polls are really questionable.

New CIF Girl's Soccer Polls just released:

Division 3
Westridge slips to a tie for 10th...very surprising considering its 2-0 loss last week to Mayfield.

Division 4
La Salle number 3 behind La Serna and Granite Hills. La Salle will not only win D4 it will make the task look easy.

Division 5
Maranatha still number 1 even though it suffered its first loss last week.

Playoffs start with wild card games next Tuesday and first round games next Thursday.

A. Campa said:

Was at the San Marino - La Canada boys soccer game. Congrats to coach Jordan Jones and LC. They played excellent defense, and outside of one or two good looks from SM, completely dominated the game from a defensive standpoint. It will be very interesting to see how far both SM and LC can and will go in postseason.

And like Go Titans said earlier, if TC gets into the postseason, they are also a threat with their stingy defense.

fred said:

Heard that La Canada and San Marino girls tied, 0-0

JohnM said:

Tom S...how about a report on what happened in the Maranatha loss? Did they just have a bad game?
Also, if Max Preps is correct both Maranatha and Whittier Christian have one league loss. If that's accurate it seems that Maranatha is still in a battle to win its league.

I say third place comes down to the winner of SP TC because Monrovia has to play both the teams ahead of them...i dont see that working in their favor...

I think this is the first time in these blogs (including the football ones)the the Maranatha faithful have "taken it easy" and have decided to "listen to what you all have to say"!!!! The wake up call will better prepare the team for the playoff run, but the weak schedule to finish the season, won't help, except in seeding. A weak schedule breeds overconfidence.

reporter said:

That's basically what i was saying John M and goteamgo... whether you care about LS and BM or not, its a good analogy: Bishop Mont. could have looked dangerous and rough and tough and physical and created "opportunities" all day long like "Soccer Fan" claims...but in the end its the quality of the opportunity and the ability to capitalize on them that matters.

Tom S said:

goteamgo:
Don’t worry about the Maranatha faithful. We’re here, taking it easy and listening to what all you have to say. Yes, the undefeated season is over but with the three games left in league and those three teams have a combined 3 – 10 – 1 league record we’ll finish up with a 21 – 1 – 2 record and I’m sure top seed in our playoff bracket and a good shot at a CIF championship

goteamgo said:

I agree with John M. - ususally it is the better prepared, better conditioned, and better disciplined team is the one that prevails - that neutralizes the "luck" factor. The team that makes the fewest mistakes is usually the one that prevails.

On a different note, I saw the Maranatha girls lost their first game - the Maranatha faithful seem to be much more quiet now on this blog - a wake up call was needed.

JohnM said:

I have no interest in the La Salee-BM issue but I will say that good teams finish and losing teams don't. It has nothing to do with being "unlucky."

Go Titans! said:

It may seem strange to everyone, since I am a big San Marino fan, but I believe that the team that has the best chance to do damage in CIF (If they get there) is Temple City. If you look at their record (and the fact that they should of beaten us twice), they haven't given up a lot of goals and have more shots then most of their opponents. It is only a matter of time before they explode on a few teams.

reporter said:

If you are going to post about a team (Bishop Mont), then you should know a bit about them. BM is a very very rough team and they "threaten" to score often. if you want to call those "chances", go right ahead. But those chances are just a bunch of girls, including #19, running hard at goal and hard at the defense. that might be impressive to you but... The chances that count are the ones that are converted. It was a tight game, no doubt, but in the end, LS was able to take quality passes, turn them into quality shots and convert their more chances into goals. And BM was able to run wildly at girls and physically rattle them and look "dangerous", but end up with nothin'. Same thing last time they play LS. In two games vs BM games, LS is 4 goals for; 0 against. No "should've's there.

Bosco did not choose to drop to D6. Individual teams do not get to call the division they are in.

Also, Campa is not a parent. He works for the Star News.

So little homework being done, must be a Cathedral grad.

SoccerProf said:

Bishop Mont was in fact lucky. The score should have been 4 or 5 to 0. A foul clearly in the box was given a direct kick just outside the box ( and barely missed), a header hit the cross bar, I could go on. The fact is La Salle has a very good defense combined with many scoring threats. A very good TEAM.

This is the second time La Salle has defeated Bishop Mont, both by a 2-0 score - enough said.

HighSchoolSoccerFan said:

Soccer Fan,

Games are usually won because goals are scored (La Salle scored two and Bishop Mont scored none). It doesn't matter how many opportunities a team has (Bishop Mont), if they can't bury them then they can't win. Calls were missed on both sides but that happens in almost every game. Bottom line, La Salle scored and Bishop Montgomery didn't. A 2-0 win is not luck, it's the result of hard work and converting opportunities.

soccer fan said:

Bishop Montgomery was unlucky. They should have beat La Salle. They had far more opportunities on goal and La Salle was lucky that #19 didn't score on them. La Salle's #13 constantly fouled her,but Bishop never got the call. Additionally, there was a foul by La Salle's #13 that should have been a PK. All in all, La Salle won this game due to Katie Tripoli and Alexa Weigand because La Salle's defense should have been penalized with at least two PK's.

observer said:

A. Campa- You are definitely a parent because when it comes to soccer the only bit you know is Bosco. Bosco Tech chose to leave the Del Rey leagues so they can find success in Division 6 (which means they dropped two divisions). Should they play against La Salle, Bishop Montgomery, Bishop Amat, or St. Bernards.......they wouldn't have a chance. Cathedral has owned Bosco for the last three years. Bosco got tired of not being able to win a championship, so the coach decided to take the easy route......Good luck in division 6, you'll need it!

Here's a Camino Real League score if anyone is interested - Bosco Tech 2, St. Paul 2. The Tigers will play Serra on Friday in a game which will likely determine the CRL race.

SF Alum, I was at Monday's game and also at the game at Loyola. The big difference between both squads is experience. Coach Appels said before the season that experience would be a key factor for such a young team. While St. Francis is the best team in this area, I don't think they will advance past the quarters. D-I is so deep, there probably won't be any easy games at all in the playoffs. The Golden Knights are a year away from a title run.

Like I said at the beginning of the season, Don Bosco Tech will go furthest in the playoffs this year. This is a senior team that played in Division IV last year in the very tough Del Rey League (which is a bit watered down this year). I would expect them to at least make the semi's of Division VI.

what are the other rhl boys soccer scores, sm sp was a good game very close, the pk's cancelled out, but really you can't say either team dominated. SP should have converted one of 5 on goal attemps that sm keeper got, but they didn't.

SF Alum, St. Francis is far and away the best team in the area, but in the playoffs, it's a crapshoot. There are too many good teams in division one, so whoever gets hot is going to win it.
--------
South Pas girls beat San Marino 2-1, and La Canada defeated Temple City.
RHL girls race is tight, La Canada (12 points), Monrovia (11 points) and South Pas (10 points) are within a game with three to play. Should be exciting.

SF Alum said:

Fred-
Glad you didn't move SF down in your rankings. I was at the game on Monday against Loyola and they had their opportunities to win that game, but it wasn't their night. I thought Loyola's Goalkeeper played really well. I think SF has a chance to win the Division I title but it will depend on the draw they get in the playoffs. They are going to have to compete with some awfully big schools and will need some luck. Hopefully, they can get another crack at Loyola.
