in past years blaming the sp coach was legit. this year he has turned a bunch of ayso players into a team that was ranked in DV. Although one could say certain moves should have been made sooner the coach is doing an outstanding job this year.

TripDave said:

Wow, was that was posted by a disgruntled bench player?

Anyone wants to blame SP Soccer coach? What's wrong with this guy? I don't think he has any desire to go to play off (EVER)!!! They have talented players on the team, but Coach doesn’t know how to use them. That is too bad that these boys has to suffer because of bad coaching.

No excuses tigers just playing bad soccer

Any excuse...And remember they are ranked #10 in Div V...LaSalle is Div IV

La Salle over SP 5-2

although SP was resting a lot of starters, they havent been the same team since the schurr game

I looked at Max Preps - Maranatha has played 18 games; of those 18 teams played only 9 have a record of .500 or better; that means that 9 of their opponents have losing records. The overall record of their opponents is 101-96-23 - basicaly they have gone undefeated playing .500 teams.

The only way to eliminate the "doubters" is to wait until the playoffs - then we will see if they are for real.

Reality said:

TomS, they still haven't played anyone. Who is Campbell hall anyhow? If you don't "venture" out of town to play ranked teams from other parts of the state or country, its easy to have an undefeated record. they still haven't played anyone and im still a doubter

Tom S said:

This just in, Maranatha 2-0 over Campbell Hall. Let’s see, the only undefeated team in the Star-News area. 15 – 0 - 3
So lets hear from all you doubters, oh they haven’t played anyone. Oh, there’s holes in their defense. 57 points for and only 5 points allowed in 18 games.

a lot of skilled goalkeepers keeping it sharp in Rio Hondo League

3-0 lc over sp

tigers just didnt come to play today

Blair was lucky to get two goals on south pasadena in wednesdays game. It did get close at the end, but the midfield controlled much of the game, and south pasadena was playing without 5 men, 3 starters who were suspended. Those included a starting defender and two starting midfielders. So lets not say that blair was un lucky to lose. They are however a good team and I wouldnt be surprised if they did make a run, RHL is close this year.

SP Tiger, we hope to have someone covering tomorrow's South Pas-La Canada boys soccer game.

if La Salle, Maranantha, FSHA and Westridge don't schedule games with each other next season, all teams should be ashamed.......

Anonymous said:

I agree with the comment about Blair I have not seen any of their games .... but they have only lost by a Goal....In a high scoring game against LCHS 4-3...and the beat Monrovia 1-0....What about LCHS getting beat by San Marino yesterday! How long has Appels been at SF?...They have always has a good soccer team.... Even when Pete Venegas was there.

boys soccer

south pasadena 3

blair 2

South pasadena only had 3 chances during the whole game. those 3 chances to goal were result in goals, and blair couldnt score being always on south pasadena goal. But dont leave blair out of the race, i think they going to get out of that mentality of only playing soccer for 10 mins and then goofing around rest of the time. Look for freshmen forward Pablito to be a great threat one of the best forwards coming up in San Gabriel Valley.

FYI: The Rio Hondo League boys are now in Div. V, not Div. IV, as some have suggested. And yes, South Pasadena is the only ranked team from the Rio Hondo in a very winnable division.

I agree that coach Appels is doing a tremendous job as St. Francis. I'm looking forward to that rematch with Loyola later in the month on Dec. 29 at St. Francis.

SF Alum said:

Fred-
I think Coach Appels at SF deserves a lot of credit. He took a virtually unknown program over and has built a legitimate powerhouse. They moved the team up to Division I this year and they will be competing against some big schools in post season. We will see how they do in the playoffs against this tougher competion, but either way Appels has done an outstanding job!

so boys rio hondo league, why do we have split divisions, and why are LC and TC suddenly in a higher division than SP. Is this new stuff, or has it always been like that?

soccer chica said:

haha alright sp tiger - divisions are for teams from around a larger area to play other schools that are the same size and in some cases ability not based on size at all. League play is local mostly, and divisions are to bring all the teams together in one large conference pool

SP Tiger said:

so whats the point of the divisions?

JohnM said:

SP Tiger....if all three of those RHL teams made the playoffs they could possibly face each other in post season play.

SP Tiger said:

Fred,

Friday RHL showdown of two teams tied for first, La Canada and South Pasadena...you guys at the star news cant pass that up can you?

SP Tiger said:

So if LC TC and SP make the playoffs, they wouldnt play each other ever?

Anonymous said:

To SP Fan: La Canada and TC aren't ranked for D 5 because they are D 4.
The rankings are based upon the coaches association votes. If anyone wants to see leagues, results, and rankings check out socalsoccer.org

Maranatha score was 3-1. Off of a pk so still no goals in the field of play.

Maranatha girls soccer is having an incredible season. This is a very talented team and these girls are very humble about their success. Congratulations so far!

FredJ said:

Maranatha 2, Pasadena Poly 1, Minutemen's nine game scoreless streak ends, but still undefeated.

FredJ said:

Monrovia 2, Temple City 1; Wildcats looked solid today, really liked midfielders Lisa Kelley and Shannon Brooks. Only sophomores, the 'Cats future looks bright. Also, freshman forward Tyler Shirk is going to be special.

SPathlete said:

tigers had a solid 3-2 win over blair today. they were without four key starters. they should be in the running for a RHL title seeing as how they just added another star player who is a 3 year varsity starter, and who missed the entire preseason.

SP Tiger said:

3-2 victory over blair for the tigers...tigers playing without four starters and one reserve.

Fred,I dont understand, La Canada and TC arent ranked in the top ten for D 5?

Anonymous said:

CIF limits teams to 20 game schedules (tournaments only counting as 2 games) and both La Salle and Maranatha have scheduled to use all 20.
Otherwise i think it would be a great idea to have the two play each other. It would probably be good for both teams to play a playoff quality team before the post-season. Too bad it's not probable to happen.

FredJ said:

BTW, Westridge scores two goals to earn a 2-2 tie against Chadwick. Quite an accomplishment on the road.

FredJ said:

La Salle vs. Maranatha?
Star-News No. 1 against No. 2?
I spoke with La Salle coach Sal Lopez last week, who said he is trying to get in touch with Maranatha to see if they have an open date on their schedule to set up a game.
Would love to see this happen, it would be our nonleague game of the year!!
