BASEBALL, SOFTBALL PREVIEWS COMING NEXT WEEK

| | Comments (95) |

Let's start with an easy question. Is there a better pitcher returning than Monrovia's Eddie McKiernan? My guess is that Pasadena Poly's Robbie Rasmussen, Alhambra's Noe Ramirez, St. Francis' Luke Collis and La Salle's Matt Kohorst make a good argument.

When it comes to softball hurlers, does Arcadia's Jenna Rodriguez stand alone? Maybe Monrovia's Brittany Bateson, South Pasadena's Nichole Parada, Gabrileno's Kelsey Duhling, Alverno's Michelle Escamilla or Rosemead's Danielle Armenta could challenge her.

Maybe in the SGV, but certainly not in the whole LA county. He's good, but think about all of the thousands of high schools you're talking about. He is going to UNLV and not Fullerton.

Typically for the LA Times - to leave out the best pitcher in not only the SGV but LA county - is it no wonder that its ciculation is down 20% in a growing market.

You: Kohorst sucks he only got a scholarship to crappy USD

Us: USD is a very good D1 program

You: what are you talking about, they only play intramurals or D3, anyone who doesn't know that is a moron.

Us: No, here are some links showing they are a division 1 program and nationally ranked by Baseball America (the #1 source of amateur baseball info).

You: well rivals.com doesn't have them ranked so you are all morons.

Us: fine, but did you notice your precious rivals.com has USD ranked with the #6 recruiting class, which Kohorst is a part of?

You: Well, he is not their top prospect so it doesn't matter, Kohorst is average and USD sucks. In addition, rankings are stupid because in football USC is not ranked all year and then they finish 1 or 2 in the polls.

Us: You are a complete and utter idiot.

For what its worth, I think Rasmussen is a better pitcher but to belittle a kid who got a partial scholarship to a very good program reflects much more poorly on you than anyone else here.

The crap will stop when your nutty comments about Kohorst stop and everybody on the blog know who you are - so stop embarrassing yourself.

Doesn't mean something though if the kid gets a scholarship to the same school as sanchez and blair? Come on now coaches don't give scholarships out to people they do not want. And stop with the money talk, it's BS and you know it. This crap about Kohorst on this blog is from the same person who went off on the fb blog eariler this year. WE know who you are and shut up on here, you are ruining a great attempt by Fred Robledo to bring around a new spirit in local high school sports.

And so it begins... TC's trash talk rears its ugly head... (it is much early than expected)... i will say we should (should) be a lot (A LOT) better than last year. We have some "stud" returners, and some very, very talented underclassmen...

and to the anonymous La Salle fan:
at first i was angry you were still talking about the football win, but then i realized i would too. it just shows how much football matters. if we beat La Salle friday, it still won't remove the pain of that Saturday morning (and night, and Sunday all day, and the months that followed). just like if we get swept by Monrovia (again) this year, it won't take away any glory or happiness from that electric Friday Night (or that weekend or that Monday, or the months that followed).

anyway... Go Rams!

How about the fact that Maranatha baseball this year has decided to drop out of the Elks tournament that most of the area teams play in and play in the much tougher Chino Tournament. That tournament has 2 of the top 20 teams in the whole southern section and at least a few others that are higher ranked than all of the teams in the Elks.

I'd say that that's a good way to start.

The value of a scholarship and admission is more than the $ cost of tuition. There is more under consideration when selecting a school. In addition to the primary focus on academics, there is also the coaching staff, caliber of recruits, and of course... Omaha!

just the facts said:

For the record Kohorst gave up 4 runs in 4 innings against SF and was the losing pitcher. He pitched against no one in that weak league they play in.

RUFORREAL said:

Baseball fan,
You forgot that Kohorst is taller and got a partial 1/9 of a scholarship to a more expensive school - By the way there are a lot of schools that are more expensive to go to - but few more prestigous both in the classroom and on the sports feild. UCLA had by far the most freshmen apply this year than any other school in the NATION. I am sure USD is on the list I just didn't see them. UCLA has 100 national championships, I am sure USD has one - I just couldnt find it. Let's knock off this nonsense that Kohorst is in the same ball park as the other two and he is well behind Collis (a better QB too), Ramirez and several others too.

The Poly/Monrovia game is going to be potentially the best pitching matchup all season in the SGV. The two best pitchers in the area squaring off in the first game, a great way to start the season.

To clear up some issues:

1. The Poly/Monrovia game is this coming Friday at Monrovia. I am not sure of the time but it will be an evening game.

2. Rasmussen was given a 3/4 scholarship by UCLA, which is quite an accomplishment considering teams only give out 9 full scholarships to be divided as deemed necessary.

3. I'm pretty sure Rasmussen's dad played for Arcadia. His uncle did go on to play major league baseball and may have played for Monrovia, but I think both played for Arcadia.

Get used to what? Watching a team think they are the greatest by playing schools half their size, so they can dominate? Maranatha continues to play in divisons it can easily dominate, and needs to move up and play a tougher schedule. I know that many of you out there are tired of hearing about Maranatha but I must tell you that Baseball is also a sport that is on the rise. They may not do much this year but there is a very nice class of Freshmen and a few Sophomores that will put this program in the area top 10 very soon if not this year. I'll admit that the last few years, the program was quite literally a joke, but their new Manager, Brian Dehaan is the "real deal" and they have the young talent to start attracting attention starting with Freshman starting pitcher Dylan Covey who will be one of their primary throwers this year on Varsity.
#10 in the area? Quite possibly.

We'll see how this season pans out but keep an eye on the Minutemen!!

The later rounds of this tournament should be very exciting.I definately want to see SF take on monrovia, poly and la salle to put to rest any doubt of who the best teams are in the area. Why is Arcadia not on that list, I always thought it was the Arcadia Elks tournament. I am probably wrong but I still would love to see them play against these teams. Alot of these kids have played with and against each other since T-ball.See if some other guys are worthy of scholarships.Should make for some amazing ball.

Sorry, 11.7 scholarships, not 9.

Prep League Fan said:

For what its worth, there are 9 scholarships available to a D1 college program. The NCAA doesn't care whether the tuition is 5,000 a year or 50,000 a year. It is very rare for ANY athlete to be offered a full ride scholarship to a D1 baseball program, almost all scholarships are partial so they can spread the wealth around and field a team. IF Rasmussen has been offered a full ride at UCLA that is a very big deal regardless of the cost of attendance.

anonymous,
To compare a kid who gets a full ride scholarship to UCLA for baseball and is told he is not to play other sports by the school to a kid who gets a partial scholarship to USD and make the dumb arguement that the kid going to USD is a better pitcher because he is taller is one of the many reasons why that kid gets ragged on so much. There is simple no comparing the two and for you to force that issue is simply dumb and people on this blog are not stupid. Let it go.

anonymous said:

Just to throw this out there, I'm not saying anything bad out there, but this Kohorst kid gets a lot of crap on this blog for no good reason. And by the way hsrealist, if you knew much about sports generally people who are 6' 4" tall generally pitch and have better potential at the next level then 5' 9" pitchers. All three are good, but if you say potential why not a kid who only plays basball 3 months a year because he plays two other sports unlike the other two who play solely baseball. I personally see more potential in a kid who has barely played a sport where he received scholarships to D1 schools to play.
It'll be interesting when these three kids play each other in college the next couple of years.

Baseball area top 10. This is tough. I will share my limited knowledge. Arcadia went undefeated in the winter season. They had strong pitching from Jr. David Arredondo, Sr.Corwin Kim and Soph. Brice Rutherford. Offensivley the team is lead by Soph. Tim Smoley, Sr. Ryan Jackson, catcher Sr.Max Velario and Kim.
Monrovia is always a good team with Eddie McKiernan, Curtis Cowell and company.
LaSalle should compete very well with Kohurst and Doeppel leading the way. Cresenta Valley should be very strong with all their returners Dustin Emmons, Kam Kriese, Chad Nacapoy, Micha Dunam, Kris Kauppila and Chris Johnson.
Pasadena Poly returns 8 staters from last year. They will have 3 strong pitchers in Ramussen, Fesse and A.J. Talt.
San Marino should have a good year. The team has played together since little league.
St. Francis the CIF runner-up will try to repeat.

Here is my attempt at a top 10:
1. Crescenta Valley
2. St. Francis
3. Arcadia
4. Monrovia
5. Pasadena Poly
6. La Salle
7. Temple City
8. San Marino
9. La Canada

FredJ said:

By the way prep baseball fans, if you want to see the best game of the year, it's coming next week. Monrovia and McKiernan is going head-to-head with Poly and Rasmussen in the opening game of the Elks tournament. I believe it's a week from Friday. As soon as I get the official word, I'll let you all know.

FredJ said:

Orange&blue, you said it all, IF Poly finds a pitcher? I don't care if you have eight all stars, if one of them is not the pitcher in softball, you can't go very far.

orangeandblue said:

Poly softball will dominate their league if they can find a pitcher - they were 10 and 0 in league last year with 80% of the team returning and they have added 5 freshmen from what may be their most athelete girls freshmen crop in many years - 2 freshman girls were on the Varsity Volleyball team - 5 freshmen were on the JV team including 4 starters and the MVP of that team was a freshman. 2 freshmen on the varsity basketball team. If Poly finds a pitcher - look out.

How is flintridge Prep going to be this year - I remeber the glory day with Schatner(sp?) - any chance for a return to said glory?

Really there are only two special pitchers in the area - our guy Rasumussen and Mckiernan. All the the others are solid - but anything else said about them is just BS by relatives or the uninformed. Kohorst is a good well rounded athelete and a good kid to boot - he is burden by issues that aren't of his making and have little to nothing to do with LS beating M-town. Go easy on him as he is not the one doing the over reaching posting.

No one is saying who is better than anyone else. Just don't bring down kids for no reason. All 3 of these kids have scholarships to top D1 schools, so they are all good. I hate these no life people who just demoralize high school kids on the internet.

I know that LC softball has all league as a freshman Kyle Mulligan - but do they have anything else?

There is no question the best pitcher in the area is Poly's Rasumussen. Who else had a scholaship to UCLA as a junior?

You cant compare Football with Baseball. Is two different worlds. I dont think bloggers are upset that LS beat M-town in football. Some bloggers, who may be players/students, just dont know how to approach certain issues and have a legitimate argument over the blog. There are differences on the bloggers mentality during certain issues. Cant you tell?

yea kohorst isnt anything special...i mean hes only got a scholarship to USD whos ranked #18 in college baseball right now...i guess thats not an accomplishment at all...

anonymous said:

Just curious, but what has Kohorst done to people on these blogs? Honestly the kid must be good enough as a pitcher if he got a scholarship. Is it some people's who job in life to bring this kid down because he beat Monrovia in football? Get a life, and let the kids just have fun and play some baseball and don't make assumptions about who is going to be better in 10 years because, really does anyone on this blog know the future or are being paid by ESPN to predict people's careers or are they just jealous parents who have no lives so they take it out on random kids on the internet.

Where are the softball bloggers?

Eddie "Weasle" McKiernan;

This is one of you PCL American LL (TC Live Oak Park) former coach and the 1998 District 18 champs.

Remember?

Anyhow, dont get caught up in all of the blogging and talk, just pitch the ball and hit homeruns kid.

Say hello to Mark for me.

See you on the diamond.

As soon as I get the Elks tournament, I'll post it. Lots of great local teams int he tournament, a real great way to start of the season.

FredJ said:

Are there any other pitchers we should be considering? I'm curious to see how Noe Ramirez comes back after having an injury plagued sophomore season. He had a great freshman season.

RHL Observer said:

Mckiernan is the best of the bunch, for what he has done the past 2 years. Rasmussen is the next in line and has dominated in he's division (VI), but has also had great pitch performances on summer allstar teams. Collis Had a great run all the way to the CIF championship game. I don't know much about Kohorts but if Fred believes he's up there I'll take that.
There my be another player that can make some noise in the RHL if he stays healthy throughout the season. He does have the ability and size to doe soo.
Good luck to all and LET'S PLAY BALL !

hsrealist said:

I guess there is a reason why you kept your name anonymous because kohorst is a joke. Mckiernan and rasmussen will be effective at the next level and collis is going to end up going somewhere.

anonymous said:

Kohorst would dominate McKiernan anyday

Wildcat player said:

McKiernan is by far the best in this group. Kohorst, are you kidding me? The discussion should only be about McKiernan and Rasumussen. They are by far the area's two best and they're going against each other in the first game of the elks tournament next week.
