GIRLS SOCCER PLAYOFFS

| | Comments (64) |

Let the discussion begin
South Pasadena and La Salle clash in a Div. IV first-round game on Friday while La Canada has the difficult task of going to Santa Fe and playing on that cow pasture they call a field.
Westridge has a difficult road in Div. III, and Maranatha looks primed for a run in Div. V

Division IV: The road to the CIF-SS Division IV girls soccer championship begins with a local match-up of area powers. Del Rey League champion La Salle (20-2-2) earned the No. 3 seed and has high expectations entering the tournament, but the Lancers will be tested in the first round against visiting South Pasadena (10-8-6) — the third place team from the deep Rio Hondo League.
“We’re excited to be playing one of the top ranked teams in the division, and I’m hoping they overlook us,” said Tigers coach Terry Cassidy. “I saw them in the Flintridge Sacred Heart tournament, so I’m familiar with some of their players. But we’re as healthy as we have been all year, and if we keep it close going into the second half, there could be an upset in the making.”
La Canada (12-5-4), the Rio Hondo League co-champion, enters the playoffs as a No. 2 team from the RHL and with a very difficult first-round game on Friday.
The Spartans will be on the road against Santa Fe (15-5-3), the second-place finisher from the Del Rio League, which boasts top-seeded La Serna.
Monrovia (11-5-4) owns the No. 1 seed from the RHL after finishing in a tie with La Canada, and will play the winner of Wednesday’s wild-card game between Perris (7-13-4) and Palm Desert (12-6-2).
Division II: After finishing second in the Pacific League, Arcadia (14-6-3) earned a Div. II first-round home game against Irvine (9-11-1).
Irvine finished second in the powerful Pacific Coast League behind champion University.
If the Apaches reach the second round, they will likely face No. 2 Hart (22-3-1) in the second round.
Pasadena (11-4-3) earned a wild-card berth after finishing fourth in the Pacific League, and will be on the road Wednesday against Westlake High School (9-2-8). The winner will face Golden League champion Highland (12-4-7).
Division III: Prep League runner-up Westridge (10-2-5) will face Miramonte League second-place finisher Hacienda Heights Wilson (12-7-1) in the first round of the Div. III playoffs at home on Friday.
Wilson finished second in the Miramonte to East San Gabriel Valley league power Bonita, and will provide a stiff test for the Tigers, who reached the Div. IV quarterfinals last season.
Division V: Alpha League champion Maranatha (21-1-3) secured the top-seed for the Division V playoffs, and will meet the winner of Wednesday’s wild-card game between Nordoff and Paraclete in a first-round match on Friday. Gabrielino (10-4-3), the champions from the Mission Valley League, opens the first round at home against De Anza League runner-up Big Bear.
If Gabrielino and Maranatha advance, they will meet in the second round.
Division VI: Delphic League champion Marshall (11-4) and Horizon League champion Alverno (7-9-1) both have Div. VI first round home games on Friday.
The Eagles will face the winner of Wednesday’s wild-card between Sierra Vista and Bell-Jeff.
Alverno will host Woodcrest Christian (17-8), the second place team from the Big Sky League.
NOTE: Scheduled updated after each round.

Sorry for the huge review, but I'm really loving the nfl, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it's the right choice for you.

Have the Los Padres teams been tested? I think when you go 4-0 in the first-round of the playoffs, and your fourth place wild-card team beats Magnolia, the Orange League champion 3-0, that's being tested.
I just hope that La Salle and La Canada aren't looking ahead to playing each other, they should treat Tuesday's games like championship games.

The Los Padres teams went 4-0, but against who? Local talent in general right? Except the Santa Maria team, they surprised Magnolia from down here, i guess. But otherwise, have the Los Padres teams been tested?

reporter said:

We're talking a nearly 3 hour bus ride up to Lompoc and Santa Maria for LC and LS. It's crazy. The girls miss school for the trek and there won't be too much fan support up there. What kind of competition is there up in Lompoc anyhow? Could it possibly compare to this part of So Cal?? What's the competitive level of a #1 team from a Lompoc league? Anyone know? There aren't too many premier club teams playing up that way, not many soccer clubs in general. But, like we saw with South Pas., a lotta heart can go a long way and trump talent.

FredJ said:

Westridge is the only local team at home on Tuesday, hosting Pac-7 league champion Arroyo Grande in a Div. III second round game. If you don't have a game to go to, go check this one out. Starts at 3.

FredJ said:

La Salle and La Canada are facing a couple of Los Padres league teams, anyone know how good they are? The Los Padres league went 4-0 in the first round, and La Salle has to play Lompoc, the league champion...Santa Maria St. Joseph finished fourth in the Los Padres, won a wild card, then blew out Orange League champion Magnolia, 3-0 in the first round. And with both games on the road and more than 2 hours of traveling, our hometown quarterfinal might be in jeopardy.

Some of you bloggers take things too serious. This is a "Blog" and use whatever hyperbole one feels when writing. National Team, best back, MVP, best team etc. That is what blogging is all about. Heck in my poll LaSalle and Maranatha Girls are number one. I have seen many of the girls on thise teams play, as well as, many La Canada girls. Enjoy the action, it's fun!!!

Anonymous said:

Thanks for the Westridge recap. What about the Maranatha game? That was another squeaker.

in response said:

i was at the westridge game. Senior Katie Davis scored early in the first half and kept it 1-0 until half time, when the first 30 seconds wilson scored to tie it up. Then Katie scored again and then freshman michele stathatos scored to make it 3-1. Wilson scored with 1 minute to go after it hit the post and a forward headed it in. Wilson dominated first half, but westridge despite being scored on twice really had control of the second half

FredJ said:

I don't know about all of you, but I'm rooting for a La Canada-La Salle quarterfinal rematch. La Salle won 4-3 on Dec. 12. I'd love to see what I consider the area's best forward, La Canada's Nancy Avesyan going against the area's best defender, La Salle's Kasey Johnson.

Anonymous said:

Can someone tell us what the Westridge game was like? I see they squeaked by too...did they dominate? Who scored? Was it as close as the score indicates (3-2). What are their chances?

FredJ said:

The girls soccer blog is awesome. Editors use to tell me I cover too much soccer, but the responses here and the more than 300 spectators at the La Salle/South Pas game shows that soccer deserves all the coverage we can give it.

Anonymous, you're right, I didn't mean to say she was on the full national team. Maybe someone can help, but I think she was called up to one of the full age-group teams like the U-19s or something like that...

Anonymous said:

Some people really have a strong need to be recognized, don't they?

soccerprof said:

Anonymous, im not a LS faithful or a LS anything. But, you can't throw "national team" titles around like that. Playing for a full national team in any sport is pretty incredible and it should be stated accurately if its going to be stated at all.

Anonymous said:

Oh, I thought that was aimed at the "La Salle doubters" and I had not really seen any "La Salle doubting" here recently.
I suppose it is nice to get ranked in the top 50 nationally in a poll where most of the voters know nothing about your team or cmpetition and can only see your record.

Tripdave said:

"La Serna (the no. 1 seed in Div 4) lost in PKs to Apple Valley."
Wow, that is an upset. I wonder how #2 seed, Granite Hills did?
We know how #3 seed LaSalle did.

So...It is nice to see a local area team that was unranked at the beginning of the season receive the recognition they deserve from people outside of the SGV.

Any word on the scores in the girls La Canada and Monrovia games?

Anonymous said:

Are the La Salle faithful a little sensitive about Kasey J getting too much credit?

SoccerProf said:

FredJ,
just to get things straight, when you refer to the soccer "national team" you are talking about the full women's national team. KJ and others like her are in YOUTH national POOLS. That means they are trying out for YOUTH national teams (but are not on a team yet). They are in a pool of players being considered for a youth (not full) national team. It is still a great honor no doubt; But...lets not use the "national team" label so inaccurately. The likes of Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy, Kristine Lily might not appreciate it.

Anonymous said:

How about other scores? Can people post scores they know about please?

Anonymous said:

In Division 3, Flintridge Prep took number one seed Santa Monica to double overtime before losing 1-0. One of the better high school games I’ve seen in a long time.

reporter1 said:

Johnson did a fantastic offensive job in the last 15 minutes of the game, no question. But, i don't think South Pas having about two shots on goal the entire game (one went in due to a defensive error) is "getting beat". SP was more physical but did not threaten to score much. Also, an early injury for a starting LS forward shifted mid-fielders up into the forward position so your typical LS starting midfield was not playing together today. LS was really lethargic and off today. Maybe this close call will shake them up a bit.

FredJ said:

Kasey Johnson scored two goals in the final 13 minutes to lift La Salle to a 2-1 victory over visiting South Pasadena.
Johnson might be the best defender in the area, and that's her position with the national team and where she will likely play at USC next fall.
But the Lancers were getting beat for 75 minutes until they pushed Johnson into the attack. She really showed her versatility. For a girl who is 5-11, she's great with the ball at her feet. She completely changed the game moving forward.
I know La Salle is a better defensive team with her in the back. But they're a better team overall when she's in the middle of the field.

being an okay team can only get us so far. but the truth is la salle was scared in those first 60 minutes. and they know that they never would have pulled it off without casey. tho yes, la salle holds some incredible talent.

and as the gk, i can vouch for south pasadena. this was a rebuilding year. we came out today and played our hearts out. sphs is gonna get worse before it gets better, but i remain proud of the program. i still think la salle will win it all. i have all along. but they are gonna have to get their heads in it a little more.

p.s the second goal WAS a hand ball by casey. she even cussed before she shot it cuz she knew. but, what can ya do :)

La Salle vs South Pas Girls
Great game in the first half. Very much an evenly matched 40 minutes with SP leading 1-0 at the break. LS DOMINATED the second half outshooting SP 16-4. LS was by far the better conditioned team. SP could not keep up. Final score 2-1 LS.

What's the deal with having all games at 3pm? Who even gets off of work that early? Not me. I could take a vacation day but I would like to save it in case the team gets deeper into playoffs.

Area Playoff Prognosis: South Pasadena at La Salle.
It's difficult to see how South Pasadena can possibly win this game. Both teams played Monrovia with La Salle winning 2-0 and South Pasadena losing one and drawing in the other. Although the Tigers have only lost one of their last nine games, La Salle is just a more talented team.
La Salle 3, South Pasadena 1

---sorry Lancer fans, I just jinxed you!

Marshall's Girls League is very weak...There strongest opponents last year was Marantha and another school christian school in Simi.. Marantha was moved as you know..by the way they made it into CIF last year as the 3rd place team...They had 2 very good strikers.

JohnM said:

Fred, I haven't seen Marshall play since the Duarte Tournament early in the season. It's hard to believe they won thier league much less 10 in a row. Maybe they've added some talented players since then.

JohnM said:

FredJ....If FSHA was in D4 it would probably be in the Rio Hondo League. I suppose they would probably be favored to win that league. But unless they have improved since the last time I saw them play in mid December, they probably wouldn't get past the quarterfinals of the CIF playoffs.

FredJ said:

John, how far do you think FSHA would have gone in Div. IV, where they should be.

FredJ said:

I haven't seen Marshall at all this year, have you John? I'm wondering if they have any chance in that division?

I remember that Palm Desert team from last year, that could be a tougher opener for Monrovia

Final score prediction, La Salle 4, South Pasadena 1.

Girls CIF Division 3 Wild Card Game Final:

Flintridge Prep improves to 12-9-3 and plays at Santa Monica High School on Friday.

JohnM said:

Good luck to both area girl's team playing wild card games today.
In D2 Pasadena is at Westlake and in D3 Flintridge Ptep plays host to Righetti (Santa Maria) at the Glendale Sports Complex.

Soccer Prof said:

Don't really see anyone here complaining about the first round matchup or draw for La Salle - just interesting observations - no whining. Its just a micro cosom of the regular season, whoever is on the schedule La Salle will be ready to play.

reporter1 said:

You are right JohnM. Its nice to get an easy team up front to build confidence, but either way, if La Salle is going to win it all, they shouldn't be concerned about playing any team in D4. They'll have to go through tougher teams than South Pas to win D4. Maybe its really a plus for LS to play tough competion up front. We'll see. It'll be a good test.

JohnM said:

reporter....La Salle did get a tough draw for the first round game but if it is truly the best team in the division the Lancers should be able to beat all of the teams in the playoffs...no matter what round they play them in.

seriously said:

seriously, so many home games and so many local teams playing! Its just so great how local soccer has really picked up lately-becoming something to watch

Anonymous said:

maybe CIF just thinks that Rio Hondo league is extremely weak thus making South Pas not a hard draw at all.

FredJ said:

Because of traveling, CIF tries to keep first round games as local as possible. It doesn't seem fair, but that's probably why La Canada is playing Santa Fe in another tough first round game.

reporter1 said:

wow, i find it hard to believe wild card assignments are random. How is it that La Serana, ranked #1 in DIV and Granite Hills (#2 and coach VERY involved in CIF SS) both get wild cards??? And La Salle HS gets South Pasadena??? LS should have been ranked #2 above Granite Hills anyhow, and their coach knows it! So, please don't tell me its random who gets to play WCs. Coincidence that #1 and 2 ranked teams play WCs???? Talk about an easy ride in...We need to get some area coaches involved in CIF SS politics or something. We get ripped off. what a joke

FredJ said:

Here are some previous posts to get this thread going....

South Pasadena is a scary opponent for La Salle because they have a physical backline that can be difficult to penetrate. I don't see how South Pas can score on them, but I wouldn't be surprised if this goes to overtime with neither team able to score.

Posted by: FredJ | February 12, 2007 03:41 PM

Thanks John M,

Didn't realize that the widcard placements were a random draw. Was not suggesting that La Salle get a "bye" in the first round. Should be an interesting game

Posted by: Soccer Prof | February 12, 2007 03:14 PM

also soccer prof...the draw for where the wild card winners play is random.

Posted by: JohnM | February 12, 2007 03:07 PM

Soccer Prof...no teams in D4 got first round byes.

Posted by: JohnM | February 12, 2007 03:06 PM

I find it interesting that La Salle, one of the top three seeds in the DIV playoffs did not get a wildcard playin in the first round. No complaints - just an observation.

Posted by: Soccer Prof | February 12, 2007 02:40 PM

Anonymous...I think getting South Pas in the first round is definitely a tough draw for La Salle. I haven't seen South Pas this year but they have seen tough competition and would like nothing more than to knock off the number one team in the area.

Posted by: JohnM | February 12, 2007 02:36 PM

I agree with John M. That South Pas team on a good day can hang with La Salle. They were completely out of of sync vs. La Canada last week in the 0-2 loss. If they get it together, it will be a good game.

Posted by: Anonymous | February 12, 2007 02:35 PM

Were you being sarcastic about La Salle's first game being a tough draW?

Posted by: Anonymous | February 12, 2007 01:59 PM

The most interesting local girl's matchup this week has to be La Salle-South Pasadena in D4 action Friday...a tough first round draw for La Salle.

CIF D5:

Maranatha will face the winner of the Nordhoff-Paraclete wild card game.

do south pasadena boys deserve at least a wildcard game? i think so.

CIF D4 Girl's Soccer:
La Salle at home against South Pasadena on Fiday, La Canada travels to Santa Fe and Monrovia will play host to the winner of the Palm Deser-Perris wild card game.

CIF D2 Girl's Playoffs:
CV, Burbank, Arcadia and Pasadena all get spots.
On Friday, CV plays host to West Covina, Burbank is at Royal and Arcadia plays host to Irvine. Pasadena will travel to Westlake on Wednesday for a Wild Card match.

Posted by: JohnM | February 12, 2007 12:06 PM

the crazy thing about cif is on any given day any team can lose. one bad round of pks and la salle is out, or one upset goal knocks out a top ranked team.

i agree with anonymous. la salle and lc are certainly most improved. but la canada was also fortunate that sp and monrovia are both in the middle of rebuilding years.

how do you all think teams will do?

TripDave said:

Damn,
Monrovia, LaSalle, SoPas, Pasadena, Maranatha, Westridge and LaCanada are all playing very important and potentially exciting games at the same time, on the same day but at different venues. Too bad you can't Tivo life.
6 of these games are home games and local.
If I didn't have a vested interested in one of these schools, I'd be hard pressed to decide on which game to attend. Which ever it is, it will be a $9 well spent.
For me it may come down to who has the best snack bar, is where I'll be.
