MAKE YOUR PLANS FOR CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY

| | Comments (42) |

Congratulations to all the teams playing for championships on Saturday. We welcome your thoughts and predictions on what should be one of the best prep days in West San Gabriel Valley history.
COVERAGE UPDATE: Don't hold me to this, but the tentative plan for Saturday is to have a writer covering every game, and to have photo galleries of every game on our website, in addition to whatever we can get in the newspaper. We realize this is a special day for everyone. While we won't have pictures off all the teams participating in championship games in our sports section to go with the stories, our photo galleries online should provide great memories for all the teams. I would like to take the time to apologize to Aram. I'm sorry that your prediction was wrong and implying that it was drug use that led you to pick a very good local team against over one of the top teams in the nation. I'm also sorry for not understanding your prediction took into account an invisible point spread that has somehow made a loss for LC into a win. I didn't realize that by predicting a victory for La Canada you were implying that a moral victory would do as well.

*steps away from podium

I implied nothing about the margin of victory because, frankly, a win is a win is a win. 40 points or 1 point, it's a W. I was implying that only sentiment would have led anybody into thinking LC was going to beat CH.

I was there pulling for LC all the way and believe me I wish I had come on here after the game talking about how Aram is a freakin' genius and how he was the only one who called it.

But didn't happen. So why apologize for something when there is nothing to apologize for?

jim, There are mules less stubborn than you!

Jimbo, You implied they would lose by a ton - not go into OT and lose by only 4. Be a man and apologize to Mr. C. It is a big step, but, you can do it.

Jim Garrison said:

Ok, so next time I grade a history exam I'll give somebody credit for saying the British won the Revolutionary War. I mean, they didn't, but they made it close and exciting.

Give me a break.

the real hsfbfan said:

Jimbo,
You are a couple cards short of a full deck if you don't know why your wrong. Re-read your comments.

Jim Garrison said:

And the pick was from his "heart" not his "head" cuz LC is the local team. They were also the big underdog and made a better story.

Aram picking LC was like the local sports writter in Hickory taking them over South Bend Central Bears. Emotion, not reason.

Oh and Hickory actually won. But Hickory at least won. But I mean, they had Jimmy Chitwood, so why wouldn't have they?

Jim Garrison said:

Again how was I WAY wrong here guys. I understand you're LC fans and that's great. You played a helluva game in the finals and believe it or not I was in the stands rooting you guys on.

But I said CH would win the game. Did I ever say CH would win the game by 40? No. In fact, nobody ever gave a predicted score. I said CH would win.

And guess what? They won.

And so now when somebody says something, and it comes true, they are wrong and owe somebody an apology???

In what world is that ever the case?

Why would a TC grad's pick of LC be from his heart and not his head. Like LC faithful said be a man admit you were way wrong and move on - Might want to make it out to a few LCHS basketball games next year. You could catch one this Thursday too. LC is playing in the state championships.

LC faithful said:

Jim,
Here is your quote:
Fred, did Aram get suspended pending drug testing for his pick of La Canada over Campbell Hall?

I love La Canada, don't get me wrong, but clearly Aram knows nothing if he's making that pick. How is he still employed?

Posted by: Jim Garrison | March 1, 2007 07:26

I wouldn't say Aram knows nothing - if Adam's shot doesn't just fall short at the end of the game LC wins. They only lost by 4. You implied that it would be a blow out and that Aram was on drugs for making suck a pick. Be a man, admit you are wrong and don't pretend to love LC - with Hoffman as coach you can never count them out. Admitting you have a problem is the first step.

Jim Garrison said:

So wait, was he picking against an imaginary spread or something?

Since when, in predicting games has "close" now become a standard that is acceptable? You mean if I had put money on LC I could have collected on my bet cuz they were close?

the real hsfbfan said:

For Aram to make such a close pick with LC, shows that he knows more than anyone on this blog about LC basketball. There's some teams you should never count out because of great coaching and LC is one of them. Plus, Aram is a TC grad who has been following the rio hondo league for years and years. He knows his stuff.

To say that he clearly knows nothing is totally out of context.

A. Campa said:

Hey Fred,

6-6, where's my free soda?

Jim Garrison said:

Yes, you were the only person to pick La Canada, which actually is my point. No way you picked them because you actually looked at the two teams and said "I think LC can beat the nationaly ranked team with the number #2 junior in the nation." Your pick was with your heart, not your head.

And again, I picked CH and they won. You picked LC and they lost. How am I more wrong than you when that happens?

I would still suggest a drug test, but more for steroids this time. Unless there is some other chemical substance that sends people into roid rages.

Aram said:

Read your original post. Then, read it again. You made it sound like La Canada winning was as likely as the sun NOT coming up tomorrow. You said I should be drug tested for picking a team that led for most of the game and had a shot in regulation with eight seconds to win. I was probably the only person in SoCal not named Tom Hofman to pick LC.

Technically, I was wrong, but suggesting a drug test for somebody who picked a team that led for almost the entire game makes you more wrong.

Jim Garrison said:

Apology for what Aram? You picked LC to win. They didn't win.

Yes, they played a helluva game, and while I was there I was cheering my arse off for them. But to say that your prediction was made from your head and not your heart is revisionist history at its best.

Congratulations to the Star News and its excellent coverage on "championship Saturday." The news stories and coverage was fantastic. I know it is hard to cover every event and keep everone happy with limited resources, but you guys deserve a championship ring for your coverage -

Aram said:

Jim Garrison and Insane?,

Apology accepted in advance. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves, probably having lived in this area long enough to know that when you've got Tom Hofman, you've got a major headstart. Basketball is more than just raw talent and vertical jumps. Great effort by LC, in what was probably the best game of the day.

Anonymous said:

Boy was Jim Garrison right - how in the world could Aram have pick LC - LC got slaughtered right? - oh Cambell Hall had to go into overtime to get the win - never mind.

Anonymous,

The problem with Title IX is its interpretation. The point of Title IX was to increase the opportunities for women in sports, not to limit the possibilities for men. Now don't get me wrong, Title IX is great, but to decrease the number of mens teams is just wrong.
The most logical method would to add more womens teams to the esisting men's teams. The problem is that there simply are not enough women who want to participate in sports. This can be proved by looking at the intermural sports of any college campus. The ratio of men to women is heavily in favor of men.

By the very definition of discrimination, proportionality and cutting men's programs is reverse discrimination against males.

Since 1972, wrestling has lost over 400 programs at the collegiate level, gymnastics is left to 26 at the D1 level. Swimming and diving for men has also been drastically affected.

What is crazy is since 1991, 20,000 male opportunities have been eliminated while only 4,800 female opportunities have been added.

The sad thing is that proportionality has spread to the high school level. Just recently, Alhambra HS boys teams had to donate some of their proceeds from fundraising to the girls teams. They should be allowed to keep the money they raise. Again, proportionality is the problem, not title IX.

The opportunity for sports should not be denied to anyone who has the desire to try.

Title IX had a huge impact on high school sports. Without it- the girls would still be way behind in number of sports opportunities at the HS level.

Title IX is NCAA regulation, not high school sports

Anonymous, we don't have the staff to cover every wrestling league finals, but what we do is have a writer at the CIF finals, Masters Meet and state finals this weekend. With six cif TEAM finals on Saturday, I'd say we're fortunate to be able to send a writer to the state meet.

Anonymous said:

Budget cuts,Title IX and a lack of newspaper coverage as compared to other winter sports.

Example, StarNews wrote about the TC wrestling team fiasco at the RHL Wrestling Finals, but not even write about the event itself.

Even worst there are a lot of good wrestling programs west of the 605 like Rosemead, Monrovia, La Canada to name a few, that get no love.

Why are there not a lot of wrestling teams this side of the 605? Why isn't wrestling very popular over here like in the Mid-West?

Wrestling Dad, we will have a guy covering state wrestling championships.

FutbolFan said:

There is no state championships for soccer becuase in Northern California; boys soccer is a fall sport and girls soccer is a spring sport. Too much rain in the north for these sports to be in winter.

LSsportsfan said:

Congratulations to the La Salle girls soccer team for reaching the CIF final. I will be cheering them on this Saturday in Downey.

But there is something I don't understand. The CIF sanctions state playoffs for girls volleyball and boys and girls basketball. Why not boys and girls soccer? It is a shame that all these great boys and girls teams in the finals will have their season end no matter what. While the boys and girls basketball finalists move on to the state Southern Section playoffs next week.

I am assuming there are no state playoffs in baseball, softball and boys volleyball because the CIF doesn't want these games interfering with end of year exams and graduation. But I don't understand the rationale for not having state soccer playoffs.

Can anyone provide any insight on this? In most other states most high school sports have state playoffs including the spring sports.

Tom S, I wouldn't say we haven't done anything on FPrep, we covered them twice during the season and once during the playoffs, and won't miss their championshp on Saturday. I wish we could do more but at this point our main attention has to go to the big schools like PHS and La Canada playing for championships.
