The clock is ticking ....

Pasadena coach Kevin Mills is still on paid leave by the Pasadena Unifield School District for allegedly permitting two students to fight inside the PHS lockerrom, and still faces misdemeanor charges for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. With spring football around the corner and summer fast approaching, how long should PHS wait before it decides to name an interim coach or go a completely different direction?
I spoke with PHS co-athletic director Tony Brooks about it on Monday.
Question: With Mills not allowed on campus, who's running the program?
Brooks: (Strength and conditioning coach) Randy Horton was the associate head coach to Kevin, and he is monitoring the weightroom and making sure the kids are doing what they're supposed to do. So, in the short term, he's running things.
Question: If the criminal and PUSD decisions drag into the summer and fall, how long can you wait before either naming an interim coach or looking for a new one?
Brooks: We have an idea as to when we want to move in that direction. May 15 is the date where we have to have something in place, but we still feel Kevin will be exonerated and it will work itself out by then.
Robledo's thoughts: Mills needs a year away from football. If it's PHS' intention to keep Mills if he's exonerated, then name an interim coach for 2007, and bring Mills back in 2008. Mills' reputation has taken a hard hit regardless of the outcome, and if you bring him back to soon, it will likely become a huge distraction for a Bulldogs team that has high hopes this fall. Personally, I hope to see Mills back on the Bulldogs sidelines someday. He's still a young coach from Pasadena with a lot of knowledge to give. But for PHS and Mills, a year apart might serve them both well.

GUESS WHO'S COMING BACK?

Athletic Director Lou Torres said Moors football coach Gil Ruedaflores will return for a 20th and final season this fall. As long as his health permits, this is great to hear. With Dushine Smith and Anthony Brown back in the backfield, the Moors could send Ruedaflores out in style.

The most anyone can give is 100% SMG.
I have no connection to Maranatha or any of the other private schools in the WSGV.
The WSGV is lacking in the number of parents, youth coaches and high school coaches who participated on NCAA or NAIA athletic teams. Some might refer to this as the gene pool. Whatever you'd like to label it-that is a major reason why the WSGV is not a powerhouse.
Having said that- there are alot of outstanding, supportive and caring parents in the WSGV doing their best to provide opportunities to their kids. If a Maranatha team wins its league title, that is the same as any other league title. That doesn't mean Maranatha is going to be able to beat Mater Dei, but neither would Muir.

OC,
what does OC stand for oblivious coach-- you must be on the Maryeanta staff.

SMG said:

OC,
your opinion and insight is just why WSGV does not bring home a CIF crown--- you are so soft just like school and many others in the area that tells the kids just give it 110% effort and keep your heads up and everything will be ok-- yeah yeah yeah (that mentality will never bring a major CIF crown to Martianta---

oc said:

SMG- G is obviously not for genius.
Maranatha is a nice school with a quality athletic program. The league they are in and the CIF divisions they compete in do not matter. The only thing that matters is that the kids give 100% effort in whatever they attempt. That is true for all of the student athletes at all of the WSGV schools.
The WSGV is not known as an athletic breeding ground for top D1 athletes-never will be. Those oh so powerful and talent laden Pasadena schools produced how many scholarship players this past football season? And those can't miss RHL players are going where? Oh that's right - there were some academic reasons(problems)for their choices. Nice excuse considering these kids are student athletes.

p finchamp,
nice comments on the maryanta scheduling-- but they are facts-- and nice take about the big drop off of campbell hall and other various schools--- just like I said earlier I believe Flintridge Prep made a big run 5 years ago and I believe Poly made one a couple of years ago too.
Now Maryanta made their cinderella run and everyone in the community is wetting in their pants. It is just a one and done but in this case I will give them the benefit of the doubt-- the QB, RB Love, and the DE will 11 sacks are all back(and it is sad that I know this b/c I hate Marianta so much) anyways they play in the worst division in America and they already have six wins in February-- so the coaches only have to look at four films-- I like their chances.

That sounds like a great ideal pal, buddy, champ. By the way Maryanta still plays no one and you guys stink.

You might want to consider going to those anger management classes you must have stopped going to. Your fixation on Maranatha can’t be healthy.

Here's what I know of Maranatha's upcoming schedule.
They've got Poly, Mammoth, Rio Hondo, and I believe some school from San Diego in the pre-season. Don't remember the other but it's not CSDR or Twin Pines.
Their league hasn't changed and so as far as I know so it's still: Whittier Christian, Brentwood, Campbell Hall, Calvary Chapel, and Marshall.

SMG said:

oh the maryanta bashing is coming just had to get these clowns attention,

1-9 CSDR
1-9 Twin Pines
1-9 Calvary Chapel
0-10 Pasadena Marshall
3-7 Campbell Hall

There should be a limit on how many 1-9 and 0-10 teams you could play in a season or for that fact a decade. Any coach is a .500 coach before you even put on the pads-- what a joke--

Tom S said:

Paul: I heard that Flintridge Prep dropped us so there goes crowning a Pasadena area small school champion. I hope we drop CSFD and Twin Pines and add maybe So Pasa and another local school to our preseason schedule.

Interesting post by you. I don't come from a broken home, nor with any perspective of a child with a parent in prison. Your articulate postings and demeanor should shed great promise to those that DAWG and others regard as "disadvantaged."

Don't know if you'll hear from the Maranatha (wait a minute, you chose to spell it correctly--you have softened)about their schedule but let me offer that they are trying. They have added Pasadena Poly however next year Poly may be as weak as they have been in 10 years! I think they dropped CSFD and Twin Pines. Give Murphy credit, he is smart and well calculated in his match-up choices. If you were building a program you would gradually move to a better schedule each year--but not by leaps and bounds.

Tom S said:

You continue to amaze me with your contradictions. In a previous post you continually bash Maranatha and then ask Fred to change the subject and then on a post that has nothing to do with Maranatha football you bring up our schedule. What do you care?
Were you turned down on a coaching job? Dude, you’re hard to figure out

pasadena guy said:

Be careful in making assumptions like that SMG. While my conservative outlook on life may be quite apparent, my history is unknown to you. I come from a low-income, broken home, with a father in-n-out of the pen for more than 3/4 of my life. I know exactly what its like working with youth like this because I was one. For the last 15 years of my middle aged life I've done nothing but dedicate my efforts to helping these youths. And I'll tell you the same thing I tell them--circumstances are not an excuse for poor choices.

SMG said:

Anything on Maranatha adding tougher games next year or did they stick with the same easy schedule?

SMG said:

Can we stop talking about Mills' outfit. Obviously he did wrong. Lets move on and talk about spring football coming. Any bold predicions from any of the schools? Any standout players we should be looking out for? Will Rudalfores son be the next coach for the Moors?

p finchamp said:

I think the outfit on Mills speaks volumes. As I have stated in the past, I believe Mills has his own swagger and is not the type to kowtow. It is entirely possible that it is a style that would work with some of his kids but is it something we want emulated by youth? He wore the outfit and I don't think he gives a hoot what anyone thinks about it.

As far as facilities go....let me offer RH Prep's facilities as a fair comparative. Facilities are not the issue. Leadership, role modeling and mentoring are the issues as I see it. And I suspect that is why we see Ruedaflores in his position for so long because obviously it is not his overall record or number of titles won.

Moor .500 Seasons said:

Wait, so is this his 20th final season or his 20th season?

It seems every year he is supposedly retired. Is it because whoever is the next coach will kick his son out the door faster than you can say "underachieve"?

GloucesterCoach said:

First:
You can't blame Fred for posting that picture of Mills because it's probably the only picture they have of him. I'm sorry to say but I don't think the Star News keeps stock photos of every single coach in the area.

Second: I do agree that PUSD needs to make a decisions as soon as possible. If the allegations are true, that Coach Mills allowed 2 players to fight in a locker room he should be fired. I've heard of letting players go head to head 5 yards apart but letting them actually fight is out of the question.

With so much smoke already you might as well start over with a new coach and a new system.

Dawg,

Doesn't every coaching assignment come as virtually a probationary period with ethical constraints? If this guy is found to have broken that implicit probation (which every coach should be on automatically) then send him down the road and bring in somebody else.

There is nothing wrong with Hip Hop and to add the "Culture" that comes with it. I lived the Run-DMC days and I was a break dancer back in the 80's. Hip Hop is a culture to respect and it does not promote what you think.

For example, was Jeffrey Dahmer or Ten Bundy Hip Hop dudes????

Good luck Coach and I hope you get your CIF ring.

I played ball with Randy Horton and I think Randy would be a great Head-coach @ PHS. The only way to find out is to give him a fair shot at the head coach position. A head coach should be with the PROGRAM all YEAR long and lead them toward a championship season.

PHS has endured enough bad-luck since 1995 and enough is enough!!! Either give Mills the job back with probation and certain ethical conditions, or give Randy the JOB.

Life is too short and we need to get busy living, rather than staying busy dying.

PHS needs to be the POWER HOUSE school from the 70's and 80's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get Mills an agent. He can star in the next Nate Dogg music video with his outfit. These kids are exposed to the hip hop culture in their everyday life. Teach them something different.

Anonymous said:

Lets just say Mills did not get involved in this whole mess and the two kids ended up fighting outside of the school. Someone could have ended up getting jumped, stabbed or shot and instead we would be talking about why no one got involved and maybe even mourning the loss of a kid. Although his methods were a bit over the top I am guessing that it got the job done in a more safe way than it would have ended up.

SMG said:

pasadena guy,
you raise some good points-- but like many of the bloggers you have never worked w/ low income, at risk youth-- kids from broken homes-- kids w/ nothing to do but kill time-- it's sad but it is reality.

pasadena guy said:

Fred,
New York raises a good point. Continuing to show Mills in this military get-up isn't exactly helping his public persona. It seems to suggest a slightly out of touch coach.

pasadena guy said:

You raise a good point about the varying cultures between a public and private school program. However, poor facilities and insufficient funds never warrant a coach to further the already decaying moral fiber of our youth. I can't think of any situation in which it would be o.k. for a coach (mentor) to allow and even encourage violence. I know that I'm a bit old fashioned in my expectations of a community leader, but I just don't see his actions as appropriate. Please don't misconstru (sp?) my difference in coaching philosophies as though I'm passing judgement on a man I've never truly met--that is not my intention.

SMG said:

pasadena guy,
ok Mills did do wrong, but you do not know what these public school coaches have to deal with-- they are thrown to the dogs. They have bad facilities and have to fundraise for every penny and have to deal with real problems in kids lives. Not like the fairy tale coaches live while coaching at these private schools. Do you know how many fights happen in a public school each day? It makes headlines if it ever happens on a private school campus. So don't be so quick to pass judgement.

New York said:

Freddy,

If you really want Mills to get a fair trial (so to speak) you would stop posting that ridiculous picture of him. I mean, I beleive you and Aram both originally posted that picture as an example of what not to do.

I can't wait to see what other coaches come up with uniform gimmicks like that. Remember how U of Miami all wore fatigues following The Boz's example. Recall as well that U of Miami got their butts beat by the disciplined Penn State that same year.

Take a lesson, coaches and players, focus on the fundamentals not the fashion.

pasadena guy said:

Fred,
I would have to agree with Finchamp on this one. Let not everyone presume to be a coach or a teacher less we teach our kids something we don't want in them. Those who find themselves to be so fortunate to lead the young people today should do so with such an awareness and respect for the impact that they can have in the students lives. Neither coaching nor teaching allows itself the ability to see instant fruit. Both require an ability to defer gratification to a later point in life when we are able to judge who the young men have become. Coaching impacts generations to come. And based on the actions and accusations against Coach Mills...never--never would I entrust my child to him.

FredJ said:

Finchamp, you could be right. But I believe in second and third chances depending on the severity of the accusations. I'd hate to see his education and coaching background go to waste over this. Maybe a year away to reflect would be the best thing for him.

p finchamp said:

Fred

What? Are you running for political office? More than one incident under Mills' "leadership." A second chance for a kid, maybe. A second chance for a coach in a leadership position, I think not.

who ever you are you speak the truth. Alhambra has had so much talent in recent years and has gone nowhere. Example Zion Babb was not used enough. Poor coaching? Right or wrong?

Moors,
great to see rudaflores back in the saddle. 20 years at Alhambra and only two league championships. Great example that winning doesn't count what matters is character.

New York said:

Great to see Ruedaflores back for more.

Regarding Mills: PUSD needs to give this case full attention and make a decision ASAP. This is a terrible situation and nothing good comes of it. 1) Mills gets cleared...why would Mills want to coach at some place that put him on leave like this? 2) Mills gets canned...why did it take so long???
