Time to rate the Soccer Refs

| | Comments (33) |

The good and The bad:
The Bad: Be in position. Coaches can live with a bad offisde call, but I've seen far too many referees, either as linesman or in a two-man, throwing up the flag or whistling an offisdes when they're trailing the play by ten yards and not in position to make the call. Either get in shape, or keep up.
The Good: That there are enough referees in the first place. We can voice our complaints, but it's hard to find enough qualified referees for 3:15 p.m., games when there are so many gaves to be covered. Obviously, there are going to be many more inexperienced than experienced referees, but each year it gets slightly better.
The Bad: Too many inconsistent yellow cards. For example, on a dead-ball free kick, some refs instantly give a yellow card for encroachment on a quick re-start. Others give a verbal warning to keep the game moving. Some refs are inconsistent during the same game, giving a yellow for encroachment to one player, and then giving a verbal warning to another player for the same infraction.
The Good: Refs have done a much better job controlling the games, especially in dealing with loud-mouth parents and coaches. In the past, too many refs were engaging in unnecessary dialogue with coaches and parents over a certain call, which was affecting their ability to call the rest of the game. Refs have done a better job tuning everyone out, and focusing on what they should, which is the game.
The Bad: Show up on time! There have been far too many games delayed simply because referees are showing up late, forcing coaches to grab a ref from a junior varsity game, or go with a two-man system when they've paid for a three-man. This ref in the photo handing out the red-card during the Arcadia game should be given a caution himself. He arrived 30 minutes into the game. Unacceptable.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.

FJ: Interesting comments and I must say I agree with your general sentiment: Referees should know the level they can physically handle and not sign up for matches above their fitness level.

But as long as you've been around soccer, you should know it's "offside" not "offsides." When one is offside, one is "off their side," or off their team, and therefore, not eligible to play. So one cannot be offsidessssssss.

A caption on the picture of the referee showing the red card questions whether the referee is sending off himself. While the referee may have deserved to be sent off for showing up 30 minutes late, he was properly displaying the red card by holding it over his head.

Anyway, thought you would be surprise getting a post from me.

Say hi to family, et al.

I am not an Arcadia fan, but it was ridiculous for the ref to give that player a red card for, what sound like, a harmless act. I guess we should punish all players trying to have a little fun. Soccer is already boring to watch for most. Why not try to liven it up a bit?

Attention all KNIGHT fans: The varsity boys basketball team is in sole possession of first place! ARROYO is traveling to Mt. View on Friday Feb. 2nd to avenge a home loss to the vikes, a game that future league MVP Jeremy Morita did not play in. Congrats to the Lady Knights basketball team and faithful head coach Mike Gorball for defending home court and defeating arch-rival rosemead 64-42. Senior center Amanda Ragains had a season-high 21 points. GO KNIGHTS GO!

I KNOW SAN GABREIL HIGH SCHOOL HAS A NEW WRESTLING PROGRAM. THIS TEAM HAS MANY BEGINEERS BUT THEY ARE COMMING ALONG, AS A TEAM THEY HAVE HAD THERE UPS AND DOWNS AND THEY HAVE SEVERAL WRESTLERS THAT I THINK WILL PLACE AT THERE LEAGUES FINALS. SOMEONE TO LOOK FOR IS SOPHMORE FRANCISCO VILLALOBOS, WITH A 19-3 RECORD THIS SEASON. HE IS CAPABLE OF WINNING IT ALL AT THE 189 LB WEIGHT CLASS.
GOOD LUCK BIG FRANKIE! SEE YOU AT CIF FINALS.
