BASEBALL: Is Pas Poly still the area's best team? TCity, St. Francis and Alhambra won't catch them unless they lose
Question of the week: The CIF polls are used in ranking teams for the CIF playoffs. You can laugh at some of the rankings and say they're just rankings, but when seeds are at stake, it becomes serious. You have to wonder why Monrovia is ranked ahead of Temple City after Monrovia lost to San Marino last week to fall to 6-3 while TCity improved to 8-1. How about San Marino, they're 7-2, beat Monrovia head-to-head and aren't in the top ten. Who ranks these polls you ask? They're ranked by the coaches in their own division. For a change, sports writers have nothing to do with it. Is this the best way to do it?

Above: St. Francis pitcher Luke Collis
Star-News Top Ten Rankings
1. Pasadena Poly (10-1)
Unless the Panthers lose another game, I don't see how we could drop them from the top spot. They have done everything you're supposed to do to earn it. So get use to it, because they should run the table.
2. Temple City (8-1)
What the Rams are doing is even more impressive than the Tucker years. They were 11-13 last year and 9-6 in league. I don't know how many people thought they would be this strong with basically the same group back from last season.
3. Alhambra (8-1)
Moors were 20-6 in 2005; 22-5 in 2006; and getting better? With a healthy Noe Ramirez, I really like this teams chances in Div. III, where they are ranked No. 6. They can beat any of the teams ranked ahead of them, and nobody is going to out-coach Gewecke.
4. St. Francis (9-1)
104 runs in 10 games! Say it again, 104 runs in 10 games! This shows that last years run to the title game was not a one-shot wonder. The Knights and coach Solar are building a great program. If only football could model themselves after these guys.
5. San Marino (7-2)
Yes, the Titans are for real. I wasn't sure about them until last week's 5-4 loss to Temple City, and then their big 3-2 win over Monrovia. They're also receiving votes in the CIF polls, and you have to be happy for coach McNamee, who has been there a looooooong time.
6. Monrovia (6-3)
The CIF champs have been humbled, but don't underestimate them. They can still win the RHL title if they beat Temple City this week. And I still like their chances in the Div. V playoffs. I would still take McKiernan against anyone in Div. V. And the way the playoffs are set up, your No. 1 can take you a long way.
7. Gabrielino (7-1)
Best start in school history, and it comes at a time when they've got a brand new field on campus. If you haven't seen it, all you need to know is that the fencing around the park cost $450,000.
8. Arcadia (6-4)
If the Apaches continue to win, especially against Crescenta Valley on Friday, they're moving up this poll pretty quick. They're 4-0 in the Pacific League, and they still don't have No. 1 pitcher David Arredondo. I haven't seen sophomore hurler Bryce Rutherford, who's tearing it up, but I've heard good things about him.
9. La Salle (5-4)
It's good for La Salle to be in the Del Rey League after all those years of boredom in the Santa Fe League, where they were too dominant for their own good. Talking to coach Agajian this week, he likes that Bishop Amat is the class of the league, which gives the Lancers a program to chase. And they're in Div. V too, which can set up some interesting playoff games, especially if they get RHL teams like in football.
10. Bosco Tech (4-4)
The Tigers haven't had the best season overall, but it appears they're on their way to a Camino Real League title after a 3-0 start.
CIF rankings:
Division III 1. La Quinta, 2. South Hills, 3. St. Francis, 4. Nogales, 5. Corona del Mar, 6. Alhambra, 7. Gahr, 8. Crespi, 9. Quartz Hill, 10. Cajon
Division V: 1. Bishop Amat, 2. Monrovia, 3. Temple City, 4. Sultana, 5. Woodcrest Christian, 6. Gabrielino, 7. Cerritos Valley Christian, 8. Oak Park, 9. Carpinteria, 10. Grace Brethren, 11. Duarte, 12. Cantwell Sacred Heart, 12. San Marino.
Division VI: 1. Pasadena Poly, 2. Bishop, 3. San Jacinto, 4. Beaumont, 5. Vasquez, 6. Lancaster Desert Christian, 7. Windward, 8. Boron, 9. Bloomington Christian, 10. Desert Hot Springs.

SO!
How bout dem DODGERS????
Are we going to see the END of Story on the SF issues? Honestly, the trash talking between SF good fans and the SF bad bloggers is getting old. I have no problem with the SF accomplishments within academics and Athletics. I agree with Trueknight on his post.
If SF is up on the rise to a powerhouse school, such as the Concord De Lasalle, then be it. Is good for the SGV community and for the football programs within the area.
I hope that we dont beat a dead horse and move on.
By the way, Great JOB Trueknight on telling it like it is!

10 to 3 Sf over loyola
my sources which are deemed reliable but not guaranteed tell me that St Francis was leading Loyola 9-2 in the bottom of the 4th at Loyola earlier today.
Anonymous ...that's "Mr. Retard"...show a little respect!
I just want to say to everybody blogging that Golden Knights, Niteman and various others DO NOT represent Saint Francis. Unfortunately SF is a little like ND with a lot of fans who do not and did not attend the school. It is still a great insitution with very stong athletics, morals and academics. Unfortunately a few bad or better said immature kids who think it makes them look big, grown up and tough to be foul mouthed can make an entire school look like trash. I can assure you none to these bloggers play on any of the teams and likely don't even go to the school. Although we do have a few chuckleheads that would post such immaturity on this blog. "lack of grace" this is a great school and your kids would do well to go to SF. I suggest you visit the school and see for yourself. Pay no attention to the nonsense that is posted here - in fact - these bloggers have even be from other schools - like Loyola - and just trying to make our student body and school look classless. "sfkg63" we will some day soon return to the glory in football of your years as we are getting better and beter entry level freshman and just like in your years they will do it on the field and not by classlessly mouthing off. SF is on the upswing in all areas and will be the best all around school in the area.
Can we PLEASE talk about anyone else but St. Franchise on here?????
Hey retard,
St. Francis had a 29-game winning streak in football and two consecutive CIF 4-A championships in football in 1963 and 1964. 1963 was their first CIF championship and 1964 was their last.
GOLDEN KNIGHTS...who said anything about St Francis in the "wahhhh" post?
As much as I would like you to stop talking about this SF stuff, I have to ask:
Are you kidding about the Catholic/Public high school "moral" thing?
Is that the lie that you have been led to believe, that Catholic School kids have higher moral values than public school kids. That is one way to justify your Catholic School payments.
You must live in a vacuum. Read the papers.
shockedbylackofgrace,
please comment back about character of Loyola versus SF after hearing that story.
sfgk63,
please tell me what league you played in while you were at sf and "backed it up on the field"
wahhhh!...we are turning into a second rate athletic power and can't handle it...wahhhh!
you do know that last year was the first time ever SF made it to the CIF championship for baseball. and you do know that being 9-3 is a better spot then where SF was last year at this point. but i guess progress from last year means that we are becoming a second rate? hmmm
I
wat are you guys talking about. everybody keeps saying that Catholic schools are the same as public now but wat does that mean? all the SF fans are doing is protecting themselves from constant attacks. they wern't posting after getting swept by chaminade but once people start saying things outside of baseball about them they have a right to protect themselves.
This is unbelievable! It confirms my belief that a Catholic school seems to be no different than a public school morally. I'm not saying all of them but judging from the comments here, at least the ones in our area.
It's really sad to see this.
Thank You

Yes, you should take it to pasadenapreps.com, they welcome obnoxious irritating conversations about teams that no one really cares about.
I am seriously going to vomit if people do not change the subject.
Talk about anything else, please.
wahhhh!...no one on this blog likes our team...wahhhh!
wahhhh!...our coach makes our life miserable so we have to act like idiots on the internet...wahhhh!
wahhhh!...we are turning into a second rate athletic power and can't handle it...wahhhh!
I
also,
shockedbylackofgrace,
After the 2nd Loyola loss to SF last year, Loyola students came to our campus after dark and spray-painted "Go Cubs" on our Knight statue. We forgive.
maybe anon is right there is simply no difference between public and private schools anymore - very disappointing.
Niteman is right and no one in the SGV plays anyone as tough as Pasadena.
I
also,
shockedbylackofgrace,
It's quite funny that you say that. I'm guessing by Jesuit you mean Loyola so here is a little fact about Loyola's great "character". Last season after the first game between Loyola and SF, SF won 1-0. The Loyola team showed the worst sportsmanship I have ever seen on a baseball field. I was sitting in the stands with several other parents and we all heard Loyola players saying "F!#% YOU" to a number of SF players as they shook hands after the game. I then witnessed two Loyola players punch Luke Collis in the chest because Collis was the pitcher that shut them out. That was only the first game. After SF won the second game 3-0 the Loyola team refused to shake hands. If that is your idea of a much higher standard of athletics (losing) and life (profanities and violence) then I can only wish your son the best. These two teams meet again tomorrow at Loyola and Wednesday at Jackie Robinson. I invite you to come out and see for yourself who has developed more mature "men" and who the juvenile one's are.
sfgk63,
I have been hearing for a long time how the standards of SF have been going down hill for several years and after reading the blogs from sf students and/or parents only confirm my worst fears - fears about the school and what people in the community have been saying. My son who is a 7th grade travel ball player in baseball and basketball will never go to a school with such immature and juvenile students/parents. What happen to the Franciscan way of living? I am looking forward to my son living the Jesuit way of life and playing against a much higher standard of athletics and life. Thank you for having the guts to speak up for the high standards the school was founded on. It is a shame they haven't been maintained.
1. I
2. Yes, SF has dropped two to Chaminade (a team that would steam roll any team this newspaper covers). The challenge of bouncing back awaits them.
3. I would like to once again point out the fact that no other teams covered by this paper play any teams that would be up to the caliber of Chaminade, with the exception of La Salle who faced Bishop Amat in a league game.
4. There are several clueless parents here who unfortunately have to hide behind the guise of "Anonymous," and who are criticizing the attitude and class of SF student athletes. You have apparently proven that you have never attended an SF game, as well, you have shown that your lack of education and common understanding of 'thinking before you talk' has undoubtedly rubbed off on your son. Your spite shows that he was obviously not accepted. I'm sure he will enjoy Maranatha with all the other kids who couldn't get into the "good" private schools in the area.
I am completely nuetral, but I was wondering if people are tired of all the SF talk. To me it is ugly and boring. Move on and show what you have on the field. See ya in CIF.
Somebody please talk about any other team or league.
anonymous st francis apologist...why not "man up" and post with a name? What are you afraid of?
sfgk63,
I will continue to post on this blog because unlike you, I have the backbone to stick up for a team that I know is better than any team in this area. You don't win every game in baseball. Last year after losing to notre dame in the first game of their series, SF went on a 13 game win streak. All it takes is for a team to get hot and SF can obviously do that after winning nine in a row after losing their first game. In that span they outscored opponents something like 104-29. Argue that. All that happened last week was that Chaminade was the best team SF has played thus far and SF wasn't quite prepared for a team of that caliber because they had been beating up on all those weak teams from the west SGV. The same thing happened last year. First league game against Notre Dame they choked in the late innings. Then the won 13 in a row. Watch this team get hot, and keep your mouth quiet sfgk63. I personally like what one of the anonymous' said calling you a hater. I'm going to take it a step farther. IF YOU ARE A ST. FRANCIS FAN AND DON'T THINK OR WANT sfgk63 REFERRING TO HIMSELF AS A KNIGHT ANYMORE SAY "I"
I
sfgk63,
I don't think you deserve the right to regard yourself as a golden knight. YOU ARE A HATER. Once again you back everybody else but the team for which you supposedly played. And I want to know if "backing it up on the field" you mean making it to the CIF championship. Shame on YOU sir for ripping that team and still calling yourself a golden knight. It no longer bothers me that you say you are embarassed because to me and I'm sure many other SF fans, we don't consider you a part of the St. Francis family. We are more embarassed to have people like you calling themselves golden knights. Also, I am quite interested to know what league you played in when you "backed it up on the field."
sfgk63
Well said.
Your school needs more bloggers like you. I cannot believe what I keep hearing from SF students? athletes? Hopefully not parents. My son is a multi sport athlete and a good kid. I'm really ...really...really glad he is not going to that school. I don't care what the past athletic reputation is. I don't care if SF is better now or tommorow. Moral character is more important. Learning to be a respectable man is more important. If you can learn those things and have fun, then winning is a plus and sometimes a result. I feel for you because, I'm sure that you are right when you say that in your day, you did it on the field and not with your mouth. I'm sure that that is how the program was built at SF and a decline should come with trying to do the oposite way.
sfgk63 you call yourself a golden knight....PSYCHE
Golden Knights,
You are a perfect example of the low class foul mouth nitwits that are allowed in that school now. Pathetic - don't embarrass yourself or the school anymore by responding - in my day we did it on the field and not with our mouths.
seriously how can you guys talk trash when you didnt witness the sf vs chaminade game two. sf was absolutley robbed of hits in key situations. Depinto hit a ball in the gap with 2 outs and the bases loaded in the 6th and the cf came out of nowhere and made an amazing diving catch. Then in the 7th, solar makes the move to have #26 salzman hit for #23 quintaro....he hits an absolute rope that somehow the third baseman snags. It was a really great game and for all you people to popoff about how bad sf is...come more than one game... then make your decision. these guys are 2 deep at about 6 positions. they are not overrated...they play in the best league in the southland. so atleast get your facts right so you dont sound so ignorant
sfgk63,
WHAT TYPE OF ALUM ARE YOU? Why don't you stick up for your team instead of putting them down like every other jackass on this blog. YOU embarass that school more than kids that pop off on this blog. Have some pride and realize that a 9-3 record is nothing to be ashamed of. You don't know how much time this team has put in and to hear people like you putting us down when you should be supporting us after a tough loss makes me sick. After we sweep Loyola this week then we will see who is "over rated". Grow some sack and stick up for your school instead of being a pussy like all of these other jerkoffs in here.
no one from that top 10 list plays in a league like mission league. END OF STORY every game is an intense baseball game unlike the little pussy shit that you guys call baseball at TC M TOWN, MARANATHA and La Salle. Poly probably deserves a better schedule but they dont have one so you cant compare thankyou bye
the team is 6 games over 500 what are you idiots saying
I was wrong not only do we have morons that post here - right about they - we are also over rated on the field - maybe our "student-athletes" should spend more time practicing and less time shooting off their mouths on this blog.
Looks like Saint Francis spoke too soon about how "dominant" they thought they were. At least their summer will start early when they don't make the playoffs.
all of our losing games
st francis is 9 and 3 pal
thats a 3 to 1 ratio idiot
anonymous...sorry about that. It's getting difficult to keep up with all of your losing games.
the second game dumbshit
that went extra innings
god...stupidity kills
anonymous...apparently the team that scored one run deserved to lose more than the team that scored eight. But then again I didn't see the game.
if you would have been at the game you wouldnt talk trash. it was a hell of a game, chaminade got all the breaks again but the sf boys battled hard. they played a hell of a game and neither team deserved to lose
Chaminade 4
Alverno Boys 3
sweep...............
Crespi and St. Francis have not played yet.
goteamgo ...we have a topic going on our site regarding the coming Maranatha dynasty. Here is how it started:
Is Maranatha going to become a powerhouse in Southern California High School Sports?
That may depend on one's definition of "powerhouse." I hate to disagree with those who support Maranatha and believe athletic glory awaits. But guess what Minutepeople, right now your just a bigger fish in a really small pond. You don't go from mediocrity to legendary because your enrollment increases but your teams continue to compete against schools that were once your size. That will all be corrected for the 2008-2009 season when CIF divisions are realigned. When that happens and Maranatha wins a couple of CIF titles I'll be the first one to say I was wrong. But until then when it comes to sports Maranatha is still....well, Maranatha.
join the discussion at pasadenapreps.com
I was just curious as to when crespi swept St Francis. If i am not mistaken they haven't even played yet.
Tom S -
Your "little athletic program" is "not creating so much interest." It is creating a lot of comments on a blog site because of the non-stop lobbying of the Maranatha faithful. As a previous person commented, "act like you have been there before."
FSHA is probably looking to be Kilpatrick's sister school.
The Alverno Boys School is quiet because they look like a CIF wild card after Crespi swept them and now a possible Chaminade sweep.
MHS Supporter:
I’ve been slammed so many times with my support of the Maranatha Athletics program and all it does is make me come back with more resolve. You know what amazes me is how our little athletic program is creating so much interest.
Baseball is like a lotto game...first you play the numbers, then you wait for the numbers to drop. This is why baseball is a fun sport from one day to the next. Unlike football, you only get 10 games oer seasib and one game per week. There's time to prepare by scouting teams through game films, 5 days of practice, and to nurture injuries. In baseball, you may play a great game on offense on Tuesday, and on Wednesday the team only gets 2 hits. Is the way the ball bounces from the picthers.
"Hurry Up & Wait"

re SF silence: Solar is probably so on that team's a** after it got worked by Chaminade that not even the bench warmers have time to post here.
wow I think we figured out how to shup up the big mouth SF bloggers.
whoever the idiot is that keeps calling st francis alverno, you should atleast know that sacred heart is their sister school
Wow..I go a way for a day and I get blasted. I did not say Flintridge was a bad program. I merely was comparing them to the tougher competition that Maranatha had played so far. Also, I was anticipating SF, TC and Monrovia fans sarcastic responses. I was expecting them to say something like "Now you can pat yourself on the back, you beat Flintridge Prep". "Now you've arrived." Or something like that but with not as nice of words. Hey..Maranatha has 4 freshmen on the roster and could easily have 3 more key ones up from JV if the coach decided to go that direction. As for your comment about our level of education, I must tell you that our admissions and education standards have changed drastically in the last year or two. There are probably Seniors and Juniors that are not great students but the Sophmores and mostly the Freshmen are very smart and still highly challenged at MHS. Also, I don't know any private school that comes close to the lowly PUSD.
It's tough, Fred...
You write a paragraph like in your question of the week, and then Monrovia handles TC and San Marino gets dropped by LC (the latter is 3-1 in RHL, by the way).
That's why rankings are a minefield...besides peoples' pride constantly being hurt...early in the league season, there's some "sorting out" to do. Clarity comes with more games.
I feel for you, but I think your question is interesting. Perhaps the Division's coaches do have a belief that the Cats are dangerous, and weren't ready to drop them much.
Sportswriters should have all say stripped of them. Their individual knowledge is unknown and most of the local writers have gotten their jobs from nepotism. It is unknown what standards they are held to at their local publications.
Sportswriters see the games they want and can go a whole season without seeing a team play. Yet, they still rank them. Clearly these games aren't televised, so how can they find the diamond in the rough. We all know that reported stats are unreliable. At least the coaches see the other teams play and study them. Sportswriters, like on the national level, are swayed by local ties, assumptions, and hype.
Local sportswriters are basically fiction writers and should be kept away from anything that really matters.
All that matters is wins an losses at the end of the season.
Kudos to CIF for taking them out of the mix.
Flintridge has 9 freshman on their roster, no JV team, and played Maranatha close. So clearly by Maranatha logic they are a budding baseball powerhouse who will dominate the area in a few years.
Give MacDonald a break.
St. Francis/Alverno sure played Chaminade tough....just like football season.
MHS Supporter....someone from Maranatha dissing a school like Flintridge Prep in any way is laughable. You may be winning some games these days but it's easy to build winning teams when your admissions standards make those of PUSD look like the Ivy League.
Remember nimrod, a couple of years means nothing. Have a little class and try to act like you've been there before.
SMG
I am in no way a fan of maranantha in fact i hate the school but that last comment about the baseball field means nothing some school dont have room to build a baseball field, SF plays at the same field maranatha does and CV plays at stengal which is not their field....
MHS Supporter,
Maryanta, Marianta. Merrtyana, Marryanta, Martyanta-- big huge win over Prep(wait are we talking football or baseball)
FYI: no one cares about building a baseball program if they did you would have a baseball field
Not the greatest week so far for some of the area's top teams...it's a good thing for Poly that they are off this week!
Alhambra 3, Montebello 0, Noe Ramirez throws a one-hitter to follow his no-hitter last week.
This is the Ramirez I remember as a freshman before his arm injuries sidelined him most of his sophomore year.
Maranatha won. I know its only Flintridge Prep but a win is a win. Its about time they play someone close to their CIF level.
I know what you SF and Monrovia guys are going to say but hey. We've gotta start somewhere. You can save the "Maryantha" stuff and the "level 126 CIF title" etc.
It will take a couple of years to build the program.
Good job guys!
Tuesday was a tough day for ranked teams. #2 Temple City lost. #4 St. Francis lost. #5 San Marino lost. #9 La Salle lost.
Give Macdonald a break, the winds were ferocious on Tuesday. Even McKiernan had a tough time in the first, he's lucky only one run scored....The winds were so bad they cancelled the Montebello-Keppel game on Tuesday
Hope TC/Mon game is better the next time they square off. MacDonald had worst outing of career, 4 walks in first inning, tough to comeback from when you spot a team a 4 run lead in first, especially with Eddie on mound.
Kyle MacDonald pitched for TC. He didn't have it, pressure?
Who was the pitcher for TC vs Monrovia on Tuesday?
Could this be why none of the St Francis "fans" are posting tonight???
TC was out coached!!! Out Pitched!!! Congrats to Monrovia.
wffff
Story is that LC beat San Marino. A big win based off the rankings on this blog.
it was 3 runs in the 5th and a 3-run HR in the 6th...
La Canada was down 6-0 in the in the fifth inning, but then rallied in the sixth with 2 runs and a huge grand slam by Mitchell Maseredjian. Roger Romero then hit in the winning RBI in the seventh giving LC the win 7-6. WHAT A GAME!!!!!!!!!!!
Monrovia 9, TC 3.
Monrovia was crushing Temple City 5-1 in the fourth
About Keppel winning the Almont League- NO WAY. Those kids dont even play travel. If Samatha Montiel and Montebello dont take it, Danielle Lugo and Schurr will! Keppel will at best go 5-5 in league and thats a push!
