Cal St Full Coach a little hypebole on my part about the pitch speed. He was really around 88-90mph but I wanted to make a point regarding pitch speed. It worked because it brought out a good response from you. I totally agree about kids making it to the majors, most don't and many suprise you later. You are too close with the Babe Ruth comment. Actually SR Babe Ruth and sent two pitchers and four players to the minors in three years.

gknights said:

Kohorst may throw the same speed as Robbie and Eddie but those guys have really nasty breaking stuff. That is why those guys are so far above the rest. Lets also watch out for Luke Collis he would seriously give them all a run for their money with his intensity and determination HE is going to be a monster on the hill this year.

CalStFullCoach said:

There is a reason that many of the best pitchers who make it to the show were outfielders as HS players - so many pitchers blow out their arms in HS or shortly thereafter. When 19 of the 21 on UT's pitching staff has had Tommy John surgery you know there is a problem. The truth is with all the back and forth on this blog one needs to remember that the chance of any kid mentioned on this blog making it to the big leagues - I mean the majors not minors is extremely remote and I would bet that a kid not mentioned on this blog in HS in the SGV will. with due respect to superior IQ baseball guy there is no way a kid throwing 82 MPH lasted 15 years in the majors - unless he was throwing a spitter or knuckle ball. It would be like batting practice I don't care where it is placed and you can't throw straight breaking balls for 15 years. What Babe Ruth league did you coach?

Enough from all the low IQ baseball bloggers. If you knew anything about pitching speed is only one component. I played and coached against some of the best young pitchers in the area in High School and college. The best pitcher I ever saw in high school rarely thew over 82 MPH but had terrific placement of the ball and played pro for 15 years. Lefty David Clyde ( You young kids read about him)threw consistently at 100mph in high school, went straignt to the pros and lasted about 1 1/2 years. Remember these are high school pitchers and some may or may not be successful in the future. Only time will tell because history is full of great high school players who disappeared in Boise, Helena, Selma. Enjoy the game. Quite frankly I think today's young pitchers are too monodimensional. Pitchers of yesterday were all around athletes. They played basketball, football and baseball and the cross training helped to strengthen "all" their muscles. So look at upside potential. It is a better indicator in young athletes. Please do not try to refute because History does not lie.

Just to clear this mess up, no Kohorst did not throw Batting Practice today, only an idiot would throw the day before a game he's pitching in. It's a joke people, you're not supposed to take this seriously I don't think.

Bulldawg- PHS said:

It does not matter whether you are a freshmen or a JV player when facing a fast-ball pitcher in the 80's & 90's. When Kyle MacDonald was a freshmen on the TC varsity squad, he was hitting against Ryan Tucker who pitched 90-95.

HS Fan,
You just can help yourself - got to be a bully and get a cheap shot in after Fred tells everyone to be cool. Well, you picked on the wrong Cat. Most importantly, I would appreciated if you controlled yourself and didn't use profanity on this blog - there are kids that read this and quite frankly you are offensive when you use such language. Second I don't have a TV - but I do know what ESPN is and I played with Harold - so I familiar with him. You're are the reason the kid takes so much heat on the blog - why in the world would I or anyone else listen to someone like you who makes up nonsense like you do and obviously never played the game - you sir have zero credibility - you obviously have a vested interest in the kid. You taking shots at Eddie to pump up a guy with less skill is one of primary reasons for the negativity towards him.
I am very happy to have lived in Monrovia. Some of the best people i know live in Monrovia. Do you have a problem with that? Do you live somewhere better? Here is just a portion of your nonsense and made up statistics and claims: "Kohorst would dominate Eddie", Kororst only gave up one run against SF last year check that make that 4 in 4 innings. USD is a better school than UCLA because it cost more. He is a better pitcher because he is taller. Eddie throws 89 MPH per Fred - of course you got to jump in and make up that your guy throws 91 - come on. "Harold Reynolds and I have the same baseball knowledge", - how out of touch are you - Is there no one around you to stop you or help you? I do agree with Fred that we should not the knock the kid or any kid for that matter(and I believe if it weren't for aforementioned nutty posts no one would - I don't see Collis getting any negative comments here) but to put our guy down and put him in the same league as our guy is just too much for any sane M fan to take. Do yourself a favor and don't reply and just stop for the rest of the season - the kid will be fine actually better without you. Seriously.

HS Fan said:

Cats,
How can you say he does not throw 91mph? Were you at the game, because I bet you were at the monrovia v. poly game. Is there any real credability to your post because you have no facts to support them. I suggest you go back to your house in Monrovia and sit down and watch some espn and maybe pick up some baseball facts from T.V. because your theories are idiotic and you are talking out of your ass. Just rip off some quotes about baseball from Harold Reynolds. But maybe you don't know who he was so I won't be suprised if you don't listen to me or Harold Reynolds.

High school players all deserve respect on the BLOG. Great posts regarding Kohorst. Rivalry is one thing, but when bloggers attack the players without supporting evidence is not fair to them.

I would like to caution everyone to not be so mean-spirited with La Salle's Matt Kohorst, who is a wonderful kid from a great family. I don't understand it. I realize that we have two special players in McKiernan and Rasmussen, but is it necessary to bash Kohorst while praising the other two? Let's show a little class, Kohorst is a fine player who also is a division one signee. Let's be more respectful with our postings and understand these are all hard-working kids.

La Salle beat Mountain View on Saturday, 3-2. Jeff Knowles got the win and Troy Whitehead got the save. Ryan Doeppel and Corey Dolan were each 2 for 4. LS left too many runners in scoring position. They will need to hit and run the bases better to beat some of the good teams.

LS's next game is home on Tuesday against Paraclete, which beat Mountain View by a wide margin on Friday. La Salle will be missing most of the seniors, who will be on a retreat.

RHL Fan-

For your information, Maranatha went against a new kid that was throwing 91 from a side angle. We played great until the last 2 innings and let it get away. Also, just thought you would like to know that Maranatha played Azusa a couple of times in the pre-season and had great success against them.
Just be careful what you say as you continue to reference LAST YEAR. Remember that last year was last year and this year is this year. Hope that helps.

Cats said:

The two best ptichers in the area are Eddie and Robbie and by a wide margin. I knew Eddie was fantastic - I didn't realize how good the Poly kid is. To mention that kid from La Salle in the same sentence is a joke. He could not throw 90 MPH from 45 feet.

Fred,
The score was 1-0 St. Francis going into the bottom of the 6th (I was very surprised); PHS threatened to score but couldn't tie it up. Then in the top of the 7th St. Francis bats came alive and scored 2 more insurance runs, with varsity returners Simonitsch and Wong getting Rbis. In the bottom of the 7th St. Francis just couldn't get any outs and had fielding and throwing errors all over the place. PHS capitalized and tied the game up. The winning run was scored on a passed ball. PHS wanted it more then St. Francis and it showed.

And obviously you guys know nothing about rivalries. Ever been to the Turkey tussle (Muir v. PHS) and the Classic (Garfield v. So please stay in your bubble because you guys would be baffled if you knew what went on between these schools.

Two of the "reach" picks in the pre-season top 10 list were exposed today - #6 Rosemead was killed 16-1 by Azusa (with their lofty 9-11-2 record from last year) and #10 Maranatha goes down 3-2 to that powerhouse Ontario (with their mighty 2-21 record from last year). Hopefully the top 10 will be a little more reality-based in future weeks.

LS Booster said:

La Salle lost to a very good Temple City team, 5-0. The score was 1-0 until the 6th inning, when a TC triple scored 3 runs. McDonald for TC got the win, was throwing 85-86 and allowed just 2 hits in 5 innings. Kohorst for LS allowed 1 run and struck out 6 in four innings of work, and was consistently 87-88, with a top speed of 91. Both teams played good defense; no errors in the game.

Should be an exciting season.

Monrovia 3, Pasadena Poly 2 in 8 innings to open the Elks tournament in front of a large and CIF-playoff type of crowd and atmosphere. Monrovia's Eddie McKiernan and Poly's Rob Rasmussen were terrific on the mound as expected. Both pitched five scoreless innings and both allowed just one hit. McKiernan struckout 10 and Rasmussen finished with nine K's. These are obviously two of the best pitchers and teams in the area.
Poly led 2-1 going into the seventh and was two-outs away from winning when Vince Vega of Monrovia tied it on a solo shot to right-center. The Wildcats won it in the eighth, but I think Poly showed they can play with any of the big boys this season.

This thing got nastier when SMG got in the mix with his posts.

I think that both the La Salle and Maranatha faithful "flame the post." Look below, and you can see it works both ways - both sides are hurling insults at each other. I think if we got some software to keep SMG from posting, most of the negativity would dry up. The initial string started by asking a legitimate question as to why some teams were (or were not)ranked in the places they were - Maranatha and La Salle were just the two easiest examples (a 4-19 team ranked; a 20-6 team unranked)- what changed from last year?

Let's wish both teams luck in the spring season, and we can see where things fall out in a few months. Good luck to La Salle in the Elks tournament, and good luck to Maranatha in the Chino tournament.

MHS 2 the Test said:

It seems to me that whenever Maranatha is mentioned the "La Salle Faithful" flame the post. I don't see the rivalry mentioned; it doesn't go both ways. I see Maranatha posters repeatedly giving La Salle props.

La Salle, on the other hand, really needs to explore their need to constantly degrade the Minutemen. If this board is clogged with a "La Salle/Maranatha" rivalry, it's not caused by nor perpetuated by MHS.

Overall, La Salle's sports program is currently stronger than Maranatha's. No arguement there...but, the constant negativity thrown at the Minutemen won't make them quit coming on this board and positively supporting their teams.

Oh, and as always, good luck to La Salle in the finals and in the spring sports season.

Amazing after losing to LS by over 10 runs last year, and finishing fourth or fifth in the RHL, South Pas gets ranked ahead, and Maranantha who was 4-19 last year is ahead, and Rosemead who finished fourth in the MVL is ranked ahead, yet all do not return half of their starters. Yet everyone here is backing this clear overlook of La Salle in the rankings.

Pasadena Guy, Anonymous, The Voice, SMG, OC and all other La Salle and Maranatha supporters. Maranatha was 4-19 overall, and 1-7 in league in 2006, and are moving to a tougher league in 2007, and they are ranked #10 -

La Salle was 20-6 overall, 10-0 in league, made the second round of the playoffs in 2006, and they are unranked?

Why (in the Star News' opinion) did Maranatha have a meteoric rise, and La Salle such a drastic fall between seasons? Maranatha has a new coach and a tougher league; La Salle has coaching continuity and returning talent.

Just curious - maybe La Salle did not lobby hard enough to be ranked? We will know at the end of the season (just like we found out with the La Salle girl's soccer team!!)
