I know this isn't a high school topic, but Robinson is a big part of Pasadena history. Officials at PCC need to go on record and explain their actions for his demotion. It's obvious their decisions were tied to the sexual-harrasment suit filed against him, which he continues to deny even though the school settled on a monetary settlement.
Is this a knee-jerk reaction? 37-years at the school and this is how it ends.
This comment from former coach Dennis Gossard leaves me wondering why this happened to a person I've always had a lot of respect for.
"We're puzzled by it," Gossard said. "If half the department was fed up with him, it'd be understandable, but there is like 95, 98 percent that love the guy."

Story in Monday's Star-News ...
PASADENA - Long-time Pasadena City College athletic director, coach and teacher Skip Robinson will be demoted from administrator to instructor effective July 1.
The decision by the PCC Board of Trustees to demote Robinson, who has been the athletic director and dean of the athletic department for more than 11 years, came around the same time as a March monetary settlement by the college of a sexual-harassment lawsuit filed by former PCC student and employee Kelley Mueller, 37, of Pasadena.
No one at PCC would tie the demotion to the settlement.

As I've stated before, if you have a question that you would like discussed on this blog, email me at fred.robledo@sgvn.com.
This weeks question comes from Finchamp, a regular blogger and Rio Hondo Prep supporter.
We all know that a tailback moving from 185lb. to 210
lbs and maintaining his speed is a considerable
threat, as is the same for a lineman going from
215lbs. to 240lbs and more. And much of this can be
accomplished without using any of the questionable
"juice" or supplements. The question is, is this
leading to a lifetime physical-chemistry endangerment
to the athlete/person? We see the grip that obesity
has on children in the U.S., are high school athletes
putting themselves in danger's way by morphing
themselves (by planned weight gain) for something that
may end after college?

After back-to-back second place finishes, is the Keppel High school boys swimming team ready to take home a Division IV team title?
And is the La Canada boys swimming team ready to defend its Division II title?
Those questions will be answered with league prelims and finals this week followed by next week’s divisional prelims and finals at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, where the next champions will be crowned.
For two years, the Keppel boys swim team has finished a distant second to power Oaks Christian, but with Oaks Christian moving to Division III, it leaves the door wide open for the school’s first team championship.
The Aztecs return junior sensation Ryan Chiu, the defending Div. IV champion in the 100-and 200-freestyle along with 100-breastroke champion Chris Luu.
“With Oaks Christian and Cerritos out of the division, I think it makes us the favorites,” said Keppel swimming coach Ish Perez. “For us, it’s a huge deal. At Keppel there are so many sports where we fall short that we would love to be able to win a championship and put swimming on the map. We’ve got a great team to make a run at it, so obviously we’re excited.”
The Aztecs girls also hope to improve on their fourth place finish in Div. IV last year, and have a good shot with speedster Katherine Tse leading the way. Tse is looking for divisional crowns in the 50-and-100 freestyle.
The Almont League prelims and finals begin Wednesday and finish on Friday at East Los Angeles College beginning at 2:30 p.m..
The Pacific League swim prelims start on Tuesday at Burbank High School, with the finals set for Thursday at 3 p.m.
Rio Hondo League swimming finals start Wednesday at Pasadena City College, and conlude on Friday at 3 p.m.
The Prep League swim finals were held on Saturday at Claremont McKenna College. Pasadena Poly won the boys title, edging Chadwick 306 to 263.

Lancers peaking at right time
La Salle High School (19-8, 5-1) heads into the final week of the season on a roll. The Lancers, ranked No. 9 in the CIF-Southern Section Division V poll, followed up a four-game win over Bosco Tech by defeating Bishop Amat in four games last week. Mike Carlson recorded 11 kills, seven blocks and six aces, Joe Evanilla notched 11 kills and Mike Fey put down 10 kills and added four blocks to lead the Lancers. La Salle will host No. 2 Bishop Montgomery Tuesday with a share of the league title on the line.

Title there for Tigers' taking
South Pasadena (15-3, 6-0), ranked No. 8 in Division IV, swept Gabrielino and La Canada last week and enters the final week of the season one win away from clinching the Rio Hondo League title. The Tigers also got some well-needed tournament experience by reaching the championship finals of the 16-team Crescenta Valley tournament Saturday where they lost to Brentwood in two games (25-23, 25-13). Brentwood's Tito Rothstein was the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Kevin Kuramoto and Mark Stochl both made the all-tournament team. The Tigers upset Paraclete (No. 4 in Division III) in three games, 27-25,19-25, 16-14 in the semifinals. South Pasadena was trailing 14-12 before scoring the final three points to win. In the quarterfinals, the Tigers beat Los Altos, the No. 5 team in Division III, 25-22, 10-25, 15-12. They needed to defeat Oak Park, the No. 7 team in Division IV, just to advance out of pool play. South Pasadena can clinch the Rio Hondo League title on Tuesday with a home match against San Marino. Tigers coach Todd Terzian is pulling out all stops by inviting KIIS-FM's DJ Shy to play music throughout the contest. A win would be music to both team's ears.

Apaches have Pacific League title in sight
Arcadia (16-8) defeated Crescenta Valley in three games last week and enters the final week of the season tied with Claremont for first place in the Pacific League. The Apaches, ranked No. 7 in Division II, can clinch at least a share of the title with wins over Burroughs and Hoover this week. They took a game against defending champion Valencia in a three-game loss Friday during pool play at the Redondo Varsity Classic before losing in three games to Torrance in the quarterfinals of the Silver Division.

Now that Pasadena High School football coach Kevin Mills has plead no contest to a lesser charge of disturbing the peace, should he be reinstated as a teacher and varsity football coach. He faces a year of probation at an Aug. 22 hearing.

Star-News story and reaction from Monday's events ...
PASADENA - Pasadena High School football coach Kevin Mills pleaded no contest Monday to disturbing the peace for allowing two teens to fight on school grounds in December.
Mills, who has long coached the Pasadena Bulldogs and who also teaches mathematics, faces a year of probation at an Aug. 22 sentencing hearing for allowing his nephew, Michael Harrison, 16, to fight with John Muir High student Johnny McCann. Harrison is on the school's football team.
Mills was originally charged with one misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. But he agreed to a reduced charge of disturbing the peace, also a misdemeanor, as part of a plea bargain, said Pasadena's Chief Prosecutor Connie Orozco Monday.
"This is sort of a hand slap, an acknowledgment that he shouldn't have allowed these kids to fight," she said. "We didn't necessarily want to end a career over this."
In a statement to the press, Mills' attorney Pamela Dansby-Decatur called Mills "a dedicated coach and teacher" for more than a decade who "operates with all kids' best interest in mind."
Orozco said the city is pleased with the settlement.
"Adults and faculty should not be facilitating that kind of activity," she said. "We didn't want this particular set of facts to keep him from teaching, but that's not our decision to make."
Mills has been on paid administrative leave from PHS following the Dec. 20 incident and has been working daily at the district offices, said PUSD Assistant Superintendent George McKenna. Charges were filed against Mills on Dec. 22.
Substitute teachers have handled Mills' math classes, which is standard procedure, McKenna has said.
As of Monday afternoon, no decisions had been made as to Mills' future in the district, though McKenna said Mills could be reinstated at the school since the crime to which he pleaded no contest was a misdemeanor.
He said it would be up to Pasadena High School Principal Derick Evans whether Mills would continue coaching football in the fall.
As we move closer to the League prelims, CIF, Masters and the state meet, is there anyone out there we need to keep close tabs on?

Here's Scott Galetti's update on the Pasadena Star-News area boys volleyball teams.
Things are very interesting in the Pacific League boys volleyball race after Arcadia High School (13-3, 5-1) got past league-rival Claremont (10-8, 5-1) in five games Friday night. The Apaches avenged a five-game loss to the Wolfpack in March and climbed into a tie for the league lead. Both schools have matchups with Crescenta Valley on the horizon, but if they remain tied, they'll share the league crown for the second straight season. Claremont, the No. 7-ranked team in CIF-Southern Section Division II, was declared the league champion a year ago after beating Arcadia, the No. 6-ranked team, in fewer games. Since both teams won in five this season, another tiebreaker will be announced to declare the champion. Apaches' outside hitter Ryan Scott continues to get stronger as the season goes on. He put down 16 kills in Friday's win.

Gabrielino shocks San Marino
Gabrielino (8-4, 4-1) burst San Marino's bubble with a five-game win Friday. Tommy Tsoi led the Eagles with 26 kills, while John Madrigal added 20 kills. Shane Chen had 16 kills for the Titans (7-6, 3-2). The Eagles moved a 1/2 game behind South Pasadena for first place in the Rio Hondo League and are in the others to be considered in the latest CIF-Southern Section Division IV poll.

I spoke with Arroyo High coordinator Leon Ward, who is in charge of the Hall of Fame All-Star game. He said only half the coaches sent in nomination forms and they're scrambling to put together rosters. He's meeting with both coaches tonight (Tuesday), but I would suggest that any seniors, particularly those who made all-area teams, give Ward a call, or contact Joel Murphy at Maranatha to let them know you're interested.
Leon Ward can be reached at 626-391-9177, or you can contact Murphy at 626-817-4000, Ext. 1925.
Question: We're a month away from selecting the Star-News all-area baseball teams, so start sending your nominations for this area's top 11.
MVP: I know who you're thinking about. Why even beat around the bush about it. Right or lefty right? It's obvious Rasmussen and McKiernan lead the pack along with Alhambra's Noe Ramirez, but we'll do what we always do, let the playoffs sort it out.
Pitchers: Select two, and after the previous comment, do I really have to mention who the frontrunners are?
Catcher: This is always one of the toughest to select. I'm hoping some bloggers will give me some thoughtful input on this.
Infielders: Select four. We don't pick a first, second, third, and shortstop. We select the best four. It could be four shortstops. The idea here is to select the best four infielders, period.
Outfielders: Select three. And again, it's not just about the hitting, but the total package.
Utility: This could be anyone. Maybe a third pitcher needs to be included, or a second catcher or fifth infielder. This is usually filled by a person you know deserves to be on the team, but is probably facing tough competition at their position.

Question: We're a month away from selecting the Star-News all-area softball teams, so start sending your nominations for this area's top 11.
MVP: Will it be a pitcher again? If there is a dominant player from a team that goes on to win a CIF championship, that's usually the difference maker. I don't see anyone clear-cut choice at this point, but there are several field players under consideration.
Pitchers: Select two. This is always always difficult. Without mentioning names, I can think of three that clearly stand out. Do you know who they're?
Catcher: This is tough, because a lot of coaches have boasted about their catchers. I'm looking for the best combination of hitting and defense.
Infielders: Select four. We don't pick a first, second, third, and shortstop. We select the best four. It could be four shortstops. The idea here is to select the best four infielders, period.

The Apaches are in such a tough division, they might not go on to win the title, but at least they know they won the unofficial title of best team in the West San Gabriel Valley with a 3-1 victory over Monrovia in 17 innings. Rarely does the build-up equal the hype, but this one did.

Star-News boys lost for the first time last year, but still lead the series against the Tribune 2-1. I was at the first practice last week, and guys that stood out were South Pasadena point guard Darin Nakauchi, Monrovia's Markus Monroe, and of course Trevon Harmon and Nigel Ajere. Malik and Ho were on vacation and will join the team for practice this week.
MVP prediction: Malik.

Here's Scott Galetti's update on the Pasadena Star News area boys volleyball teams.
South Pasadena High and San Marino put on the area's match of the week with the Tigers prevailing in five hard-fought games, 25-17, 23-24, 25-18, 20-25. 15-9. Mark Stochl paced South Pasadena, Division V runner-up in 2005, with 17 kills and seven blocks. Tim Tong posted 15 kills and six blocks and David Allen chipped in with 10 kills. Tigers setter Kevin Kuramoto was busy with 45 assists. Shane Chen led San Marino with 19 kills while Brandon Brown added 12 kills and 14 digs. The two teams will meet again on May 1 at South Pasadena.
Pacific League title on the line on Friday
After losing a tough five-game match to league-rival Claremont, Arcadia swept away Hoover and Burbank Burroughs in preparation of its rematch with Claremont on Friday in the Apaches' gym. The two schools split the season series a year ago with the Apaches winning in five games on the Wolfpack's floor and Claremont winning at Arcadia in four games. By league rules, Claremont was given the league's top seed by winning in fewer games.
Arcadia can still win the title outright by winning this week's match in four games or less. Of course, there's still a matter of getting past Crescenta Valley, not an easy task.
Tough week for Panthers
Pasadena Poly did not drop out of the CIF-Southern Section Division V top 10 despite a four-game non-league loss to Oakwood (No. 4 in Division V) and a four-game league loss to Chadwick last week. Division II and Division V did not report polls, while there was no change in Division III and Division IV.

Must hold serve in league before May 1 rematch with South Pas

If found not guilty, should Mills remain the Bulldogs coach?
Read Star-News' latest story with reaction from those involved.
A Pasadena High School football coach accused of allowing two teens to fight on school grounds last December will stand trial in April, according to a city prosecutor.
Longtime coach and teacher Kevin Mills was charged with one misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor for allegedly allowing his nephew, Michael Harrison, 16, to fight with John Muir High student Johnny McCann.
Harrison is a Pasadena High School football player coached by Mills. Harrison and his grandfather, who also is named Michael Harrison, said police and school officials are over-reacting.
In a telephone interview this week, they both said there was a misunderstanding and that the boys, who grew up together, are still close friends.

Should the state ban aluminum bats from high school baseball? Should CIF do it? Is aluminum dangerous? And how much will it cost to change to wood bats?

Read this story by Michael Hampton from Homelandstupidity.com
New York City has completely gone off the deep end. Its city council has done virtually nothing of note except look for new and interesting things to ban. The latest victim of the city’s rulers’ hatred of freedom is the common aluminum baseball bat. The city council voted Wednesday to ban the baseball bats, with enough votes to override a veto which had been promised by mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Councilors who voted for the measure painted it as a safety issue.
But opponents said that aside from anecdotal evidence, there was no actual scientific evidence that aluminum bats were any more dangerous than wooden bats.

Northview wins on squeeze in seventh inning, ending McKiernan's 11-game win streak dating back to last season.
"I've had better days," McKiernan said.
SURPRISES
Gabrielino: Biggest shock by far. This is a team that's never won a Mission Valley League title and is tied with Arroyo in the MVL with a 6-1 record. They also have only been to the playoffs once since 2000, and with a new field in place, could be a program to contend with for years to come.
Monrovia: We're only putting the Wildcats under surprises because it appeared early on they couldn't compete against good teams without Eddie McKiernan on the mound. But look what the Cats have done in the Northview tournament, winning three games without their star throwing a single pitch. Junior Jeff Wallick has two wins in the tournament and Richard Kilbury and Allen also have pitched well. This certainly helps their chances of winning back-to-back CIF championships.
Temple City: The Rams were 11-13 a year ago, but started to 10-2 before a pair of losses in last week's San Diego tournament dropped them to 10-4. They Rams lost their first meeting against Monrovia, but still have a good shot at an RHL title with a 4-1 record to remain tied with the other boys in green.

Above: Wildcats Erik Allen isn't only doing it at the plate. He pitched a complete game shutout in the Wildcats' 8-0 win in the opening game of the Charter Oak tournament.
DISAPPOINTMENTS
Pasadena: The Bulldogs were 11-12 and 8-7 in the Pacific League last year and appeared to be a team on the rise after opening the season with a 4-3 win over St. Francis. But it has been all down hill since. The Dogs are 3-12 and only 1-5 in the Pacific.
Rosemead: The Panthers are 3-12 and 2-5 in the Mission Valley League. There was talk of the Panthers winning the league title when the season started, but now a playoff berth is the only thing the Panthers are shooting for.
SURPRISE AND DISAPPOINTMENT
South Pasadena: Look, the Tigers were 4-16 overall and 3-12 in the RHL last year, so to start the season 5-1 was a huge step in the right direction. But now they're 1-4 in the RHL with only a victory over struggling Blair. This totally mirrors the football season, so while it's nice they already have two more victories than a year ago, it's disappointing how they've done in league.

Two incredible catches by Temple City center fielder Alex Aguirre

SURPRISES
Keppel: I was looking at last year's MaxPreps record and they stopped reporting after a 1-8 start. Sure, the Aztecs haven't faced the toughest competition and the Almont League isn't nearly as strong as other leagues in the area, but to be 7-3 with a month left and a shot at a league title in who knows how many years is something to be proud of.
Temple City: After Monrovia and South Pasadena, I thought there was a huge gap in the Rio Hondo League, but the Rams are 2-2 and tied with South Pas heading into Wednesday's showdown at Temple City. The Rams lost to Monrovia and South Pas by only two runs in their first meeting and boast wins over La Salle (twice), San Marino, FSHA, Montebello and La Canada.

Above: Rosemead pitcher Danielle Armenta is still one of the area's best, but the Panthers have struggled.
DISAPPOINTMENTS
La Salle: You knew the defending CIF champs would drop after losing pitcher and player of the year Amanda Doeppel, who led the Lancers to a 26-6 record. And you knew the bump up to the Del Rey League would be challenging. But who expected the Lancers to be 6-8 with losses to Whittier and Temple City (twice)? They also have allowed a whopping 70 runs in 14 games.
Rosemead: The Panthers were 10-9 last year and knocked out of the playoffs because of an ineligible player, but they returned one of the area's best pitchers in Danielle Armenta. This was supposed to be the Panthers' year, so to be 5-8 with losses to teams like Rio Hondo Prep isn't what anyone expected.
South Pasadena: 6-6? A 5-0 loss to La Canada? The Tigers were supposed to be right there with Monrovia and Arcadia battling it out for this newspapers No. 1 ranking. They have the pitcher and the lineup, but haven't played with any consistency.

As area teams battle it out for playoff positions, it's time to add volleyball to the blog madness.
Here's Scott Galetti's take on the cream of the Pasadena Star-News area teams.
Arcadia has traditionally been the top team in the area and this season is no differet. The Apaches' only losses in regulation matches have come to San Marcos (ranked No. 6 in CIF-SS Division II) and defending Pacific League champion Claremont. I have three reasons that could prevent the Apaches from advancing past the quarterfinals. Corona Del Mar, Santa Barbara and defending champion Valencia. San Gabriel is another team to keep an eye on in its chase for a Division III crown. La Salle and South Pasadena are teams to watch in Division IV. The Tigers will face San Marino in a key Rio Hondo League match on Thursday. Flintridge Prep and Pasadena Poly are in the CIF's top-10 in Division V.

Star-News top five
1. Arcadia (10-3)
Enjoyed a week off after tough league loss at Claremont
2. San Gabriel (13-5)
Finished second in a pair of tournaments
3. South Pasadena (8-1)
Holds win over La Salle with lone official match loss coming to Arcadia
4. La Salle (15-7)
Opened some eyes with three-game win over Division II Canyon Country Canyon in Las Vegas tournament
5. San Marino (6-4)
A three-game sweep over San Gabriel proves the Titans can play

Monday
Pasadena Poly's UCLA-bound Rob Rasmussen, the best high school lefty I've ever covered, struck out a school-record 20 batters in a 5-1 victory over Glendale in seven innings, which is only three shy of the state record of 23 in a seven-inning game. I remember Alverno's Jessica Stewart striking out all 21 in a softball game against girls so scared their knees were shaking, but you have to put Rasmussen in a different category. I don't know where this ranks, but it has to go down as one of the greatest single-game performances in West San Gabriel Valley history.

Wednesday
Monrovia's UNLV bound righty Eddie McKiernan throws the second no-hitter of his career, blanking La Canada 2-0 behind eight strikeouts.
