BASEBALL: San Marino makes run at RHL title
Can Titans reach the top?: Don't look now, but San Marino High School has won four straight games, including victories over Temple City and Monrovia to pull a 1/2 game in back of the Wildcats.

PLAYING IT SAFE: Pasadena Poly’s Greg Lawler slides in safely at second base as Flintridge Prep’s Nick Ostiller drops the ball in the second inning Tuesday. The Panthers defeated the Rebels, 6-1. (Keith Birmingham / Staff)

I am tired of people complaining on here about rankings. Someone asked if it was bias or retardation. Rankings don't mean jack and the only time a ranking is solid is at the end of the year after you win CIF. Enough talk about retardation.
Sincerely,

Hey Anon ????
Why hide behind this well used name?
Naw, soccer season’s way off in the future.
TomS...getting warmed up for soccer season already?
Congratulations to Maranantha. Keep up the great work. The more SGV teams we can get in the playoffs the better.
I know I’ll get slammed for this but you might want to take a look at Maranatha’s varsity baseball team. After a slow 3 and 7 start with some losses against upper division teams they’re 7 – 3 – 1 for the last 11 games, 3 and 1 in Delphic league. Split with ranked Windward and should finish league at 7 and 1, tied with Windward for 1st place and hopefully peaking for playoffs.
St, Francis is going the way of Alemany. Get used to it.
o god can we get over the postings on this blog already. the question was what happened to them this season. i dont think any posts on this blog resulted in losing or winning games.
I don't know what happen to SF. There does seem to be a lack of maturity at that school based on the childish posts on this blog that is second to none. Combine that lack of maturtiy with arrogance that rolled over to this season results in a lack of charater that seem to permeate that school. Is it a coincident that the same thing happened to the football team.
Its funny how one good season made everyone forget that the Saint Francis baseball team has never been great. I am almost positive that they did not even make the playoffs in 2004 and 2005 and if they did they were bounced out in a wild card round. They always have talent but the way Solar coaches leaves the players extremely burned out and unhappy by midseason.
i dont think that is the case. the core group of these kids have been playing together since they were 10 years old. to say that the leaders left last year is not true. also, it is ridiculous to say that the team doesnt like each other. this is high school baseball composed of friends, not some derek jeter arod soap opera. there is leadership in that clubhouse. the problem i think is that they did not play good enough competition in the off season and before they got to league play. rolling over teams 17-0 doesnt help gain experience for pressure situations like two nights ago against crespi or several weeks ago when they were up 3-0 in the sixth against chaminade and fell apart. scheduling games against teams like duarte, university, and the atascadero tournament hurt this team more than it helped them because while they were stomping teams, crespi was playing chatsworth and gaining experience in a pressure environemnt. that is on the coach.
i don't know who is to blame - SF's coach has the kids working hard - practicing even late into the night - so it is not him. I don't know if they have a materially better starting 9 than Poly - but they are the deepest team in the area. I think some of the leaders on that team - not all - are me first leaders - who aren't well like by the other players on the team. Unlike Poly where all the kids genuinely like each other and the Leaders reach out to the other players on the team. That is not the case at SF where these lessor players feel that influence has gotten certain kids further along than they should be and those kids actually think they are better than they are and disrespect the other kids. All the true leaders graduated last year and all that was left was good players. Could really see this at the start of the season with the Pasadena game. It goes to show how important leadership in the club house is.
who do you blame for the st francis meltdown this season?
Gabrielino baseball the biggest surprise of the year? REPRESENTING!!!
Will Fox sport net be covering any of SF games this year?
Rob Rasmussen vs Max Armand in the Flintridge/Poly game. It should be a good one
You can't blame the coach at St. Francis. San Marino has won over the years with a terrible baseball coach.
prep plays at the glendale sports complex next to the 2 freeway. i dont no wat it is about this years team at sf. they have more talent that last year but they just cant get it together. i was at the game last night and it was disappointing. i talked to one of the coaches and his comment was that the guys that are supposed to be following the leaders aren't following. it is a shame that guys like de pinto and simonitsch and collis cant do more with this team. they were a huge part of last years success but were always in the shadow of bergman and smale. they really did everything the could yesterday. collis pitched a shutout into the sixth then gave up 5 un earned runs due to errors. de pinto tripled and scored two runs of the 4. it is just too bad that this will be their legacy. some of these kids deserve more.
where does flintridge prep play teir home games. the school seems too small to have a field.
I really think it would be a shame if SF didn't get into the playoffs - they are a good team and I think would go far in the playoffs.
LITTLE SORT!!! REPRESENT!!!
anonymous,
the sf team would have a better league record if they had a real coach.
st francis doesnt deserve to get in to the playoffs. and this is coming from a st francis fan!
OK, finally St. Francis honks can shut up the rest of the season. All this trash talking has brought one truism to life. Those who win do it on the field...and those who talk it up are usually hiding something they're lacking. Go Poly, Monrovia, TC and San Marino. Can't stand CV because their coaches are so freaking arrogant.
my guess is SF gets in.
The answer is yes, teams can make it in with a losing league reacord.
St. Francis is in currently in fifth place. Unless they move up, they would need to hope for an at-large berth to the wild-card round.
Here is how Division III works this year.
According to CIF, each league has a certain amount of guaranteed teams and, if my math is correct, there will be 41 teams guaranteed for postseason. If that's the case, there will probably be at least one at-large team.
Mission, 4, Almont 3, Del Rio 3, Garden Grove 3, Golden 4, Mt. Baldy 3, Orange Coast 2, Pacific Coast 3, San Andreas 3, San Antonio 3, San Gabriel Valley 3, Suburban 4, Sun Belt 3
Last year Division III took 38 total teams, including 12 wild-card teams and no at-large berths.
Is baseball like CIF footbal where a team can get in with a losing league record?
i guess i was wrong about sf. my apologies for my comments. i am very disappointed.
Crespi won 6-4. Crespi now 6-2 in league, while St. Francis 3-5.
anyone know the result of St Francis-Crespi last night?
Bosco Tech is in the coverage area and CV isn't?
SP
In baseball, South Pas started 5-1, but they lost to the only tough team they played during that stretch, Paraclete, which is 12-8. The Tigers' wins during that 5-1 start came against Muir (3-11), Hoover (5-10), San Gabriel (3-12) , Western Christian (6-12) and Bell-Jeff (9-8).
SP, South Pasadena's nonleague schedule in the sports you mentioned isn't as difficult as its Rio Hondo League foes, with the exception of Blair. This is especially true in football.
Tom, I haven't read one insensitive comment about that photo. But to answer your question, the comment was from the cutline in today's newspaper. That was how our photographer described the action when turning in the photo. If he dropped it, he dropped it. It's not the end of the world. Everyone drops a ball now and then. There are errors at practically every game I cover. And if you're going to play sports, like winning and losing, you have to accept the good with the bad.
Hey Fred,
Why do most South Pasadena boys sports (soccer, football, and now baseball) always mess things up during leauge play, after having good preseasons????
Fred:
In regards to the Poly v Prep pictures comments. Aren’t you being a bit harsh with calling out Prep’s #15 name and what appears to me to be questionable plays. The photo on the front page says “drops the ball in the second inning Tuesday.” You can’t tell if he is dropping the ball or making a catch on a late throw. You know this kid has to live with these comments.
Fox Sports Net will be at the Poly v. Flintridge game on Friday for their High School Spotlight show.
well you love ripping on Sf so much y not come and get more fuel for the fire?
GOLDEN KNIGHTS...thanks for the invite but I was at the 17-5 loss to Loyola and don't think I can take much more excellence.
ok pal why don't you come to the game tonight and watch us get to 500. then after you see the level of ball we play talk to me.
Who is the freaking moron who did this top 10? I am sure he wasn't an athlete. By the way, St. Francis is the best program around? What a joke. Get to .500 in league and talk about being on of the top 30 teams in the area.
good joke. i was actually talking about st francis. here is an idea. why don't you come to the game and watch every pitch of every inning then form your opinion of st francis?
GOLDEN KNIGHTS...when did Crespi move into this area?
I would like to invite all of you to tonight's game between St. Francis and Crespi at 7:00 at Jackie Robinson. This will be the game that turns the Knights' season around. You are all welcome to view how the best team in the area plays. LET'S GO KNIGHTS!
La Salle actually fell from No. 8 to No. 10 in the Star-News poll.
Losing to Northview is not exactly something to be ashamed of and San Marino is having an outstanding season and, like I said, could have jumped ahead of Monrovia, but I went with overall record and, until San Marino catches up in games played, Monrovia does have two more league wins.
How does La Salle move up after 4 straight league losses? I guess you are giving them great credit for those wins in that incredibly weak LV tourney. Has La Salle beat anyone?
i just dont see how you can move a team up after losing two games. common sense and baseball knowledge would say winning 1 out of every three is not improving, so why should their rank be?
Monrovia only moved up one spot from last week and only moved down one spot in the CIF poll. The only team on the list that could have been moved up above Monrovia, in my opinion, is San Marino. Who would you have liked to see in Monrovia's place?
well i like the way you rank teams more than this guy. why is he qualified?
No bias anonymous. I'm on vacation this week, so Scott Galetti is doing the top ten. This is what's great about rankings, we all have different opinions.
no surprise here... monrovia loses twice yet goes up two spots. bias or retardation?
