GROWING PAINS: This isn't what your coach means by "beefing up." Are high school football players risking their health by adding pounds?

As I've stated before, if you have a question that you would like discussed on this blog, email me at fred.robledo@sgvn.com.
This weeks question comes from Finchamp, a regular blogger and Rio Hondo Prep supporter.
We all know that a tailback moving from 185lb. to 210
lbs and maintaining his speed is a considerable
threat, as is the same for a lineman going from
215lbs. to 240lbs and more. And much of this can be
accomplished without using any of the questionable
"juice" or supplements. The question is, is this
leading to a lifetime physical-chemistry endangerment
to the athlete/person? We see the grip that obesity
has on children in the U.S., are high school athletes
putting themselves in danger's way by morphing
themselves (by planned weight gain) for something that
may end after college?

Why does everyone keep talking about SF? They are not going to anything in mission league and they do not stand a chance against the top teams in the Western Division; Culver City, Chaminade and Dominguez.
Fan,
I think I will be in attendance for that one. We'll see.
Leagues need to be realligned. Monrovia, Arcadia and Muir should be in the same league and therefore compete in the same division. Make it meaningful. And I think that Division should be either the South West Division or the North West Division, but not the Mid-Valley and Certainly not the Central.
I'm not sure what division would be a good home for St. Francis. In some respects I think they should be wherever Damien is. In other respects, I don't know why they can compete where they are. Has anybody else noticed that a lot of the top teams in St. Francis new division were in Division 10 not that long ago...?
B/c the div that monrovia is in, yes, they have the best chance to win CIF. Arcadia, Burroughs, & Muir do not have a chance in the central V. St.Francis could make some noise, but Culver City is too good, not to mention there QB is probably one of the best in socal.
New York, arcadia v. monrovia, we are only months away now.
New topic: Which West SGV team not named Rio Hondo Prep will be the next to win a CIF Championship?
New York: My bet is on Monrovia. Why? We have veteran coaches and a strong talent base every year. This past class got a lot of attention, but the truth of the matter is that we always have that amount of talent. Potts was probably the exception, but we always have plenty all around. Furthermore, we play in the Mid-Valley Division which is not exactly stacked. Verbum Dei is strong and talented but so is Monrovia. La Salle was loaded with seniors last year and it will be interesting to see if they can reload.
St Francis is tough, but they are not good enough for their division. Same with Muir.
It will be interesting to see if Maranatha will get to the dance again sometime soon.
I know this is off the subject at hand but it’s football related

Tom/Fred,
There must be some glitch that is causing that message to continually repost.

Burbank,
Not all losses are the same. You have to peel back the layers and take a closer look. After the 1994 season at Monrovia, Coach Garrison had only two years experience as a varsity head coach. '93 we were 3-7 and '94 we were 6-5 on the field but a forfeit made it 5-6. So, technically Garrison's only varsity HC experience at that time was two "losing seasons." But, taking the layers down would have revealed a new energy and direction that he had instilled into the program which then shot up. Furthermore, Coach G took over a program that was deep in losing morale and corruption. So, I would encourage you to look a little deeper into the new guy's background to see what type of things did not show up in his box score. Maybe the guy was on the virge of doing something big like Coach G did at Monrovia.
Of course, maybe the guy is not equipped like the guy whom Garrison succeeded.
Maybe you guys can shed some light on this?
If you are trying to improve your football program, why would you hire a head coach with 2 years of (losing) varsity experience?
affirmative New York. I'll see you at MHS.
sorry, that was me below. I'm just so darn excited about our tennis league title.
I don't know Fred...maybe we need a badminton blog and then we move into football 24/7?
Finchamp- with the dire football prospects here in Burbank I might have to jump on the Kares bus this season...unless the Maranatha fans make a better offer?
New York, football is the only sports we're blogging all year. Don't worry, by the summer and heading into next fall, it will be all FOOTBALL
Fred,
Can you create a separate blog just for football? Not separate threads but a separate blog. I'm getting a bit annoyed having to scroll through threads for all these other school activities just to find the football threads, the ones that got this thing going.
Finchamp,
It could be the water or the Koolaid, but they definitely drink a lot of it.
New York/Matt--
Yeah BIG difference between Santa Margarita and St. Margarets--not sure our guys at RH Prep would want anything to do with a power like Santa Margarita but St. Margarets is a different story.
I think RH Prep has a scrimmage scheduled with St Margarets in September. Last we saw them was a 17-7 victory at RH Prep two years ago on the way to the CIF championship. Interesting that they have a new coach after their recent success in football.
realmhs_fan--
There must be something in the water you are drinking at Maranatha. Someone needs to get out more. Yes Murphy is good but "chance of a lifetime" should be reserved for someone like a John Wooden not a "rookie" coach. Honestly some of the posts that come out of Maranatha folk are a real turn off. Chance of a lifetime--I can't get over that!
burbanksports--
I gather things have been a little slow in your part of town. Busy, huh? Perhaps you should start a tennis blog...not! I know you miss football.
When is Maranatha going to take ove the nicer buildings on that campus for academic studies rather than being in the old dorms?
We are also busy here in Burbank celebrating Burbank High's first ever Pacific League title. Pacific League Tennis Champs! Look out Maranatha-Look out Prep League here we come!
New York....I hear you.
I'll get you the complete run down on the Frontier League before the season. I'm still waiting for parts to fix the bandwagon.
Welch took St. Margarets. They are small private school. I bet the Canyon faithful are pissed and would like to remove their principal ASAP. Santa Clarita is like a West Texas town as far as their priorties with football are concerned.
Harry Welch took the job at Santa Margarita in San Juan Capistrano. Chaminade is still open. Who got the Burbank job?
Schools are about 10 days away from spring ball.
LA times posted an article that the CC coach quit b/c of the school admin. He couldn't deal with them anymore so the CC coach may take the chaminade job b/c Ben Mc..something took a job at cal luthern, where he coached about 7 years ago.
I see that Chaminade is looking for a new head coach. That could mean good things for SF this season.
Burbank,
How is the Frontier League looking...just kidding. That is leftover from a few months ago!
responsible for comments below...
Burbank finally has a football coach at least for today and tomorrow anyway. It looks like they'll be a very different team from a year ago, but won't challenge for a playoff spot.
Burroughs has some holes, but they may get a player or two that might step in and contribute.
The WSGV should dominate the Pacific next season.
SF is going to come out with alot to prove. Alot of the guys have really bulked up, look for the team as a whole to do big thing hopefully arcadia can give them a game so they can be better prepared for the second half of the season.
the real hsfbfan,
From what I know. Two arcadia players have competed in the scout.com all american combine and prestigious nike camp. One is most likely Kevan Walker, and the other I don't know.
I know that the aura around the football is a good one and that they believe next year is going to bring back a league championship. From what I hear from a teacher at the school, some of football players can't even focus in school they are so excited. (Probably a little overexaggerated)
My Arcadia update
anyone got any muir, phs, monrovia, st. francis updates?
Fred: Will you delete all the repeats of my original post? Someone, probably one of the Anonymous blogers is messing around
Thanks
About the all-star game did they finnally get a roster together because I hope no one would turn the opportunity of a lifetime to be coached by Coach Murphy.

That kid looks like he had too much in n out burger. 4x4 animal style!
Big A,
How do we look at arcadia right now?
Dawg,
Did you just copy and paste that from the other thread? Good luck to you too. Keep an eye out for me. I may be on campus during spring ball.
Dawg,
where are you coaching at this year?
Stang Fan;
It has been an honor discussing Tussle issues with you and I hope that PHS and Muir have a great upcoming season. Both schools represent Pasadena with honor, respect, great sportsmanship.
I must slow down my blogging until the end of the 2007 playoffs, due to the upcoming Spring football scheduling and Im preparing myself for Summer camp/hell week. There's lots to do.
All best of luck Stang, New York, P Finchamp, Fred, Campa, & others that I have traded post comments with.
See you on the BLOG after the 2007 season.
On my way to the FUN time of life... coaching football and making sure the players have FUN.
My personal Coaching Philosophy: The players will rise the level of expection.
The True DAWG.
EOW for now.

This a subject that I deal with every day as a Health teacher. Kids, especially boys all think they need to gain weight to be able to compete. I constantly tell them that they need to put on the weight gradually. It's not safe to lose weight too fast, nor is it safe to gain too fast. One pound per week is the suggested amount, using a diet in good, low fat proteins and complex carbohydrates, along with strength training and cardio exercise. I agree with the earlier poster that body composition (body fat) is the prime target and an overall healthy attitude. We live in a society that rewards the "quick fix" and it's hurting us as a whole. Slow down and take time to do it the right way.
Fred, thanks for the topic and especially the picture....I'm never eating again.
New York--
Very insightful, as usual. The bulking up business is big and it's not just confined to the football field--the added pressure and/or desire to make it to the "bigs" plays out in each athlete differently and at different times. Some guys are mature enough in high school to start influencing their shape through weights, protein ingestion and good diet. For most the transformation is most rapid in college.
I think morphing oneself comes with huge responsibility to oneself years down the road. If you grew to 240 lbs. on a 5'11" frame you owe it to yourself to work (possibly for the rest of your life)to get that weight down.
I certainly did not mean to offend anybody by speaking bluntly. I gained too much weight as a high school lineman, but I was fortunate to have guidance from my college coaches, trainers and nutritionists. Many kids do not get that opportunity. My two cents posted earlier is from the standpoint of wishing I knew then what I know now.
Great topic Freddie,
Can't wait to hear more experts opinion in this field like Dr. New York.
Athletes should focus on body composition. Don't gain bad wait. Focus on gaining good wait: muscle. Linemen still need to be able to run.
Also, focus on having a strong core (abs & lower back) as well as flexibility and speed.
I'd say that high school kids often make the mistake of getting fat and jiggly like that picture above. It is a mistake because the extra wait really does not help. That kid above would be more effective if he were 25-30 pounds lighter but more explosive. The high school kid is in danger because he does not usually have access to the great nutrition programs that college athletes get. If a college lineman beefs up, it is usually under the watchful eye of a trainer and nutritionist. Then after football, the college lineman is exposed to the right way to lose the weight. A lot of high school overweight linemen who never play college ball often stay overweight. That will lead to eventual back and likely heart problems.
Another misunderstanding is that being heavier will help a kid get recruited. Perhaps if the heavier weight is muscle (good weight), and that is usually for a tailback or wide receiver. For linemen, colleges want tall kids who are fast and have a frame that will allow them to gain the good weight. Being explosive is very important.
